    I find it bizarre when I see the question “is the OM-1 still a great camera in 2023”. From what I remember it was released early 2022, it was great then so why would it not still be a great camera today.

I currently have an R5 system that I love using, but it’s just too cumbersome to take abroad when on holiday and the range of relatively compact M43 lenses is drawing me to your world… if I can stretch to it, the OM1 looks like the way to go, with a couple of Pro lenses in the travel bag. Thanks again

    I previously owned a G9 together with the notorious Leica 100~400 zoom lens, and will never buy another Panasonic product ever again. That combo was knocked off of a coffeee table no more lthan 2 feet from the ground by a house guest. Incredibly, the lens snapped off at the mount. This happened less than 6 months from purchase. Panasonic couldn't repair the lens at the time, rendering it worthless. The sensor also suffered a tiny scratch from the event, and the high cost of having it replaced rendered that a brick as well. I replaced them with an EM1.2 and the mZuiko 100-400 lens and couldn't be happier with their more robust build. Later, while using a new OM-1, I failed to lock the camera properly to the tripod mount, and the camera tumbled 5 feet to a hard tile floor with the mounted 8~25mm lens. The unit bounced a few times, but the only damage was to the deployed LCD screen which Olympus repaired very quickly and cost effectively. It spoke to the robustness of the Olympus gear and their high level of after-sales service. As a former Canon shooter, that is what I am used to, and Olympus came through in spades.

    I actually got the OM-1 with the 12-40 earlier this year after shooting with the EM-5 mk.ii since 2015. If I go for a walk or a daytrip taking wildlife and landscape photos, I leave my primes at home and only bring the OM-1 with the 12-40 and my Pan-Leica 100-400, which means less than 2 kg in total gear. I been a Lumix shooter since the GH4 came out. Primarily using the camera for outdoor video productions. A few years back I added the Panasonic HC-2000 Camcorder to the mix. It has become my main camera. I had been keeping pace with all the other Micro 4/3 Lumix cameras, right up to the GH6. Earlier this month (oct) I decided I would make a big change. I have always loved wildlife photography and decided I would sell the GH6 for the OM1. It has taken me some time to get used to the new menu settings, but have been very impressed with the photo’s. And I can still use the video capability of this camera to do some basic video work like collecting B-role or interviews. Thank you for your detailed comparison of the two cameras, I think I will stick with the OM1.

    I've seen MFNerds comparison between the OM-1 and the G9II. I think it's a bit unfair and not impartial at all. But I have also seen other tests (without comparisons) of the new Panasonic camera and I was surprised by the electronic stabilization in video. It completely eliminates that annoying jello effect at the edges of the image. And that doesn't happen with the OM System. Panasonic has managed to have the stabilization of an action camera, or even better. True, it does crop the image a bit, but it's mind-blowing. You can see proof of this with an 8mm lens in Dustin Armstrong's video for example. I think I still like the Olympus/OM System colors better. And for photo I would prioritize the OM-1. But for video I think Panasonic is the winner.

    Hi Red, it's right to point out some mistakes made in the videos on the new g9 ii as you did. In any case, each person will have their own idea about it. Overall, after a bad experience with a Gh6 which had a breakdown and went under warranty... I wanted to try an OM-1 thinking that the autofocus would be fantastic even in video... I was impressed by the photographic capacity of focus, instant and precise, better than the Gh6 did in the photo. But then I missed the extra resolution and also the high res mode which was better in gh6 not only because it provided 100 megapixels, but because it perfectly eliminated the blurring of moving subjects. When will om-1 do it too? What further disappointed me in om-1 was the ineffectiveness of om-1 in using video auto focus for people and animals... Finally the inadequacy of the video formats. In om-1 the 4k although it produced very large files did not match the lighter 4k formats produced by the Gh6. However, I found the full HD formats even worse, as well as being heavier. So the entire full HD section of the OM-1 was unusable for me. On the photo/video performance side, the vaunted backlit stack sensor fails to offer anything substantial, apart from the reading speed, but in terms of quality not even half a stop of ISO resistance... So all things considered, I'm disappointed.. The purpose of a camera is to take beautiful photos... If the om-1 claims to be a fantastic photographic camera it cannot continue to offer the same level of image quality for 6 years now... it is true that offers a higher resolution viewfinder that looks a little better (now after 3 models that had a terrible viewfinder), but I prefer a camera with a viewfinder that looks good enough but comes up with a little better photos and videos better than before, because that is the purpose. After almost two years they still haven't been able to show us the power of these 1050 points of af... could they even make a move? At this point the software is more important than the number... considering that the Gh6 only has 315 points and only in contrast... I would say that in relation to the potential the gh6 already does better than the om-1. It's a shame that engineers don't commit to making firmware that unlocks the true potential of this sensor...

    Hi all. Please read the pinned comment on my video! I didn't realise my pro olympus lens wasn't stabilised. It was a recent purchase (as was the om1) so i was comparing dual stabilised demo on the g9ii vs just in-body on the om1. The stabilisation settings on both cameras were "out of the box".
    To be clear (i cant even believe i have to say this) i wasnt in any way trying to make the om1 look worse, why on earth would i do that? I paid for the camera with my own money and only have th3 g9ii on loan!
    Im actually in kenya at the moment with both the om1 and the g9ii so will be doing some follow up tests.
    Also id like to add in the bird hide section of my video, i tested olymlus/olympus, lumix/lumix, then swapped the lenses to show the difference. • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  Před 10 měsíci +1

      One reason is that Olympus cameras always 'had' better IBIS in the past and didn't feel the need for 'normal' lenses. However, with competitions now getting better, you never know what they may do in the future. Yet, lens IS does add size and weight to a lens, so there's a trade off.

    Jimmy, this is one of your best reviews ever and the information you provide really needs to get out there to counter the inaccuracies of Emily's review of the G9II and comparison with the OM-1. I posted in the comments of that review the same point you made about Panasonic's claim that the G9II could shoot 60fps with any lens but so far have not received a reply. Like many, I'm very disappointed with the "large" body size of the G9II - looks like a major cost saving move by Panasonic which undercuts one of the major advantages of the MFT format - small gear. All together, I think you hit on the full list of real or potential differences between these two cameras which will eventually be better understood once production G9II's can be fully tested. OTOH, the G9II is yet another powerful argument for the MFT system, and continues the momentum pulling this system ahead of other formats in many areas. Looking at both of these cameras from the perspective of the digital camera market at large, both 2022 and 2023 have a MFT camera as the big news of the year. Yes, MFT is dead. Long live MFT! 🙂

    Shame that you loose I.S. functionality when mixing micro 4/3 lenses and camera. I really liked the LCD on top and having the power switch where the shutter button is. Nikon also has this and made it turning the camera on and off with a single hand easily. As a 95% photo taker and only 5% video, the OM-1 is way better for my usage. Extra 5MP is nice. I have the OM-1 and the Olympus 150-400mm TC1.25 and are a great wildlife setup. For me, the G9 II is not on my radar. Photography is just a hobby, but I want quality. Always the best tool for the job. I also, avoid the release hype and wait a few months to see how it performs in the hand of regular user. Far too often, big names really hype about the new products, but when enthusiasts test it out, you hear about real issues.

    One feature of the G9II isn’t discussed enough: the sensor has two readout lanes, making it dual iso and allowing for increased dynamic range. For me narrow DR at low iso is the most important flaw of all existing M43 cameras and thus of the system up to now. The G9II may be the game changer here-if it really delivers. The GH6 has a similar sensor but Panasonic did not get it right, at least for stills.

    Yeah, I felt there was some statements that concerned me in other videos. The IBIS looked worse than my E-M5 Mark III. I didn't see the one with the auto focus speed test but it clearly is delaying because the sensitivity.
    I've personally experienced how a lens makes a difference in the camera's ability to Auto Focus. Not only focus motors but also the speed of the Iris when your stopped down can affect auto focus. Then what the widest aperture of the lens affects it. There is no way a 40-150mm kit lens is ever going to focus like the f/2.8. There is no way the G9 Mark II would give you as good as a hit rate at 60fps on a kit lens as a Pro lens.
    You covered those points really well.

    I was excited to learn of the new G9 II and was going to buy it until I saw your video comparisons to the OM1.
    I’ve been a M 4/3 user for quite a few years now.
    2 years ago I sold my Lumix G-9 & bought the Olympus OM D M1 MK III and it’s been a fantastic camera
    I have been going back and forth with making a new addition to my Travel Photography Kit. Thinking I wanted a FF system, last April I bought the Lumix S5 II w/2 Sigma Lenses & the Lumix 70-300 for a European Trip and HATED it. The S5II is a great camera BUT the 1:1 ratio focal Length of FF lenses had me swapping out lenses WAY TOO often to get the shot I wanted. Also the added weight and larger Form Factor was a big negative. I now know why I switched to M4/3 years ago, so I sold the whole kit after the trip.
    Watching this comparison video (and one other one) made me change my mind on the G9 II: BECAUSE: 1) Reported Poor Dynamic Range in ISO’s at 800 and below, similar to the GH5. This is not acceptable for a camera aimed at Photographers. 2) Panasonic chose to move away from the M4/3 Form Factor and made the G9 II in the same larger body as the S5 II, defeats the point of a M/4/3 camera body, Lastly, with the exception of better overall Video features, which I really don’t care about, I shoot very little video and mostly family, simple travel clips etc., I’m not a Videographer the OM1 has received better reviews in all of its Photography features and performance.
    So I bought this OM1 and SO GLAD I DID. It is just the perfect camera for me. It outperforms my OM D M1 MK III with improved Dynamic Range (1 Full Extra Stop), True Pic X processor is 3X faster, phase detection AF in four directions with 1,053 points compared to 121, Focus tracking for formula cars, motorcycles, airplanes, helicopters, trains, birds, dogs and cats and now this feature works in S-AF too, Low light sensitivity is improved to -8Ev, Continuous Shooting is now with a maximum of 50fps (with C-AF) and 120fps (AF locked) Extended ISO range, Overall improved Video Features, Handheld High Res, LIVE ND, OLED panel @ 5.76M dots and lastly, an IP53 weather sealed. Thanks for putting this video together!

    I think it is great for Micro43 as a format. I’m an OM-1 owner and I used to own a Panasonic G9 and that camera was one of the best in terms of ergonomics and handling. The DFD for photos were good for most situation except the most difficult ones like very fast moving birds and sports. Finally we have two true flagships speed monsters that shoot 50 and 60 fps in raw afc. Not even full frame flagships can shoot at this kind of speed in raw format at full resolutions.

      The main problem of G9 was the button too sensitive. Seems that this is corrected with G9-2. And with so many feature, better than GH6 in video. So way ahead of Olympus camera now.

    Emily's review was extremely biased and unprofessional. I find reviews like that actually hurts the M43 community, because it spreads misinformation and that's how rumors start. I get that part of the CZcams game is to play the algorithm - get content out ASAP while the news is hot to gain traction, but there needs to be a standard somewhere. She should know better and have some level of integrity when reporting on how these cameras perform. It is clear that she purposely left out things that were advantageous to the OM-1, like a much faster HHHR processing time, having LiveND feature, etc.
    Again, I get that Panasonic sent her the product, so she is incentivized to speak positively about it. Look at Gerald Undone for example. They sent him GH6, and he said M43 was dead. This time around, they didn't send him G9ii, and he doesn't have that content to make and to boost his channel. Emily wants Panasonic to keep sending her cameras to review, so she can make content for new products and grow her channel, but to spread misinformation like this only benefits her. It grows her channel. It helps Panasonic sell more, but who does it hurt? The viewers. Misinformation, misinformed purchases, and false expectations.
    In the long run, this will hurt her own channel too. Viewers aren't stupid, and it's easy to see right through it when a reviewer is biased. Look at all the comments in this video, they can all see right through her impartial nature. Every time she makes a video like that, she just loses more credibility.

(actually i was not planning on watching it, I am tired of camera bashing) I am glad Lumix came out with the G9 II (should of been named the G10, totally different architecture) The G9 II is not for me, I shoot with a EM1M3 (AKA OM1-slow?) The EM1M3 ergo's are perfect for my use, particularly the grip and dial placements. The G9II size and weight are just to big, the EM1M3 already is at the upper limits of what I would like to carry.

    I appreciate your balanced approach to comparing these camera models. There is a lot of excitement over the G9 ii. I think this is rightly so. It's a great addition to the M43 world. I am glad Panasonic is pushing the envelope of what they can produce. I've long been a Panasonic user, but I tired of waiting for a replacement for the G9. Last year, I purchased an OM-1. In that time, I've tried to learn the camera as I go. It's quite different from what I was used to with Panasonic. So it's taken a while. I'm finally at the point where I am not quite a novice with the camera anymore. I think the only thing ergonomically I don't like is the placement of the menu button. I wish it was over near the "OK" and arrow selector buttons. It is a strange placement for me because you have to use it to navigate back in menus as well as it simply is not as handy where it's located at the top left. This is subjective, so just my opinion, of course. Otherwise, the ergonomics work fine for me. I've customized the buttons for my uses, and it's fairly easy to remember what does what at this point. I also like the computational options such as Live ND and Starry Sky AF. The latter is pretty entertaining as I'm not much of an astrophotographer, but it allows me to do some casually when the opportunity arises. I think if the G9 ii were to include more computational options as well as bringing back some old features of their previous photo-centric cameras, it would make a difference in swaying people. I miss the in-camera panorama of the past, and post focus was also a nice option. These are just two, but I'm sure there are others I'm not currently thinking of. I appreciate your video outlining the differences between these two cameras. While I realize you have some bias, I understand where you're coming from. You have a sentimental place in your heart for the OM-1. I think cameras can be very personal, so it only makes sense. Of course, you still laid out the differences in a well-researched and considerate manner. I'd just suggest it's a video that helps to counter the very G9 ii - positive mass of videos currently out that gloss over the OM-1 or outright miss features, ignoring its positives, in light of the luster of the new Panasonic. All that said, I would probably purchase the G9 ii if I did not currently have an OM-1. I was very used to Panasonic in the past and had their lenses as well. So it only made sense. Because they were slow to get this camera released, I ended up with the OM-1 instead. I'm not sure it's a bad thing. I've had a lot of experiences this past year I would not have had, taking photos I'd have missed, if it were not for this camera. I think it comes down to what gets you out there, and what you can get the shot with. We should all be glad there are new models coming into the M43 arena. It isn't quite dead yet. Let's hope it continues to be a battle worth watching. Competition brings innovation, and with it new releases. I look forward to what the future holds.

    Thank you for referring directly to Emily's video. Describing both weather sealing and size as more or less the same with both cameras, whereas the OM-1 has the IP-rating and the new G9II body is significantly chunkier, appeared quite misleading in my view.
    What also was neglected is a much lower battery life of 390 pictures at the G9II vs. 520 of the OM-1 (in CIPA standard). I think that should at least have been mentioned.

  • @przybylskipawel
    @przybylskipawel Před 9 měsíci +2

    As for the IP rating... I would like to see anyone who puts his camera at more risk just because it has IP rating. You always need to take care of your gear. The only time my camera was at risk because of the weather was when I used Olympus E-M1 II + 12-100mm PRO. I was so confident about the weather sealing of this setup that I stupidly decided to use it in heavy rain and to use a zoom (external). The lens sucked water like a syringe and the camera stopped working. Luckily I dried it up and it went back to normal function but that just goes to show to what extent you can rely on the weather-sealing.

    • @pgy8863
      @pgy8863 Před 9 měsíci

      Weather sealing is a big deal to me. I had a Sony a6000 and got caught in a very light shower and moisture got into the camera. It continued to work, but any shot that looked into the sun was washed out and almost unusable. I had the same thing happen to a flagship Canon point and shoot. In both cases I was part way through a trip and the shots after the rain episode were unusable or almost so. So it ruined my experience, which I only found out on return. And in both cases, we are talking about light rain for a few minutes. Since then I only buy weatherproof stuff and Olympus has proven excellent here. Now even with weatherproof gear, I'm going to protect it as much as possible. These are my experiences.

    I don't think ambassadors can do an unbiased comparison. The G9ii matches or takes a slight lead in photography and destroys the OM1 for video. I think it is bit unfair for an ambassador to call someone who has bought the camera out of her own money, partial or biased.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  Před 10 měsíci +3

      First, Emily and I are friends. You can even read her direct response after her video. She admitted making mistakes when she made the video for not setting the IBIS correctly, yet edited the way that projected a very unstable OM-1 against G9 II. Again, custom AF groups was labelled, and she even quoted "OM-1 can only do rectangular boxes" and not a strip that the new G9 II can do. For anyone who have used OM-1, anyone would think that's wrong. Together, these give people who watch, a false impression on OM-1's performance and unfairly to those who are new to M43 platform or cameras in question, thinking OM-1 is really bad. As big and influential as Emily in our community, it had brought to light, and not from me, as you can troll through all the comments here, that they were upset about the missing information and incorrect projection of OM-1's performance. The video is out and everyone saw it. Many believed how bad the OM-1 was in the video and hence this video as a correction to those points. Emily admitted all these points herself but she can't take down the video now so there you go. It isn't about if someone use her own money to buy a camera or not, it just not done the research enough to spot all the features and more importantly, correctly display the capability in the video, especially comparison. I also mentioned about Richard Wong, which did similar but different mistakes. Just so you know, I also paid for my GH6 and pre-ordered my G9 II.

    • @Wildridefilms
      @Wildridefilms Před 10 měsíci +3

      @@Red35PhotographySure, everybody makes mistakes, nothing wrong with that. Dual IS lenses are just way more common, than Sync IS lenses. I can only think of 3, off the top of my head.
      Also, I'd rather have the option of shooting 60fps AFC regardless of hitrate, as that really depends a lot more on the shooting conditions than the lens motors. The fact that you can't use the 50fps AFC burst on the OM1 with the pana Leica lenses is a shame, even though they have more than fast enough motors.
      That said, I do understand what you're saying. My only concern is that, I cannot expect an unbiased comparison from an ambassador of the competitor's company. Have a good day, Jimmy!

    Interesting video. In the end I went with a G9ii and I am really enjoying it but would like to try an OM-1 as well. Both seem to have their pros and cons but for me the video capabilities to dabble won out. I am never going to be a serious videographer so this hybrid is perfect for me. As a former Olympus shooter, I am rooting for OM, and I hope they reward their loyal customers with great firmware updates to the OG OM-1 as much as possible.
    One thing that did really stick out from this video is that OM needs to make it easier and more intuitive. It is easy for people to say master the tool, read the manual, etc some like me use it as a complimentary system. OM for their own success should be making their products as accessible as possible and this is all possible with firmware if they want to do it. You also made a good point about the pro lenses with burst rate. Does the OM-1 allow that burst rate with lenses not on the list or is that speed disabled?

    As a G9 user I've enjoyed using the Lumix/Leica 100-400mm lens for bird photography in my retirement after 40+ years as a photojournalist.
    I think Lumix has done an amazing job with its DFD focusing system but, I have to admit, I've often wondered how much better the camera could be with phase detect AF, especially for bird photography. I was happy to see the OM-1 revive the reputation of MFT, earning mentions in the same company as venerated systems like Nikon, Canon and Sony. However, it was sad never seeing the G9 or Lumix get a mention unless it was for video. I considered buying an OM-1 as a second body or even switching to the Canon R7 and 100-500mm lens. I rented an R7 but felt the G9 was more refined and I really preferred the deep grip ergonomics of the G9. Now I will wait until I can rent a G9 Mk2 to see how it performs with my Lumix glass, and, how it feels in the hand before I make any more purchasing decisions. Thanks for the comparison review.

    @6:29 and on.. your expectations may be correct but doesn't have to be. OM-1 has much smaller AF points which may be a problem in certain rare scenarios as Robin Wong demonstrated. Because of the quad-bayer design and cross-type AF point AF on OM-1 needs to be used a bit different. Tests and comparisons in AF performance between OM-1 and G9II (with preproduction firmware) clearly demonstrated (Richard Wong, Jeremy Neipp) that in busy scenes G9II behaves better, is less hyperactive.

    I hope you read the comments, Jimmy. Being an EM1 Mk 2 shooter I'm always interested in seeing how an upgrade might benefit me. Until I watched your video I was feeling very positive about the G9 Mk2, but after watching and listening to your "second to none" analysis I feel like watching the other reviews was like seeing a one on one game of hoops, pitting a high school star against a pro basketball player! You put everyone else to shame with your evaluation. Thank you for taking the time to clarify the inaccuracies in the other reviews, all the while complimenting the Panasonic for it's video capabilities.
    Competition is always good between cameras and lenses in the same format. It will be interesting, for wildlife photographers who need extreme focal lengths, to see how the new Panasonic 100-400 compares to the earlier version, given it's complete redesign to accept 1.4 and 2X converters. My analysis of the Olympus vs the former Panasonic 100-400 zoom, after looking a every review available, is that the Olympus was superior. This surprised me, given that I came to M43 from Leica and having owned the top of the line Leica APO telephotos including the 800 Modular lens.
    In the hands of a photographer like Tony Markle over on the Fred Miranda forum, who posted numerous images from the Olympus 100-400 using the 1.4 and 2X converters, I can only say that the image quality Tony obtained is almost indistinguishable from images shot with a single focal length lens like the Olympus 300 4.0. And while tony's post processing is exceptional, one cannot make a soft image appear tack sharp regardless of one's photoshop skills. The skill and technique of the photographer goes a long way towards proving or disproving image quality with any lens... and Tony always came through in spades.
    One major detractor from the version 1 Panasonic 100-400 was that several photographers who owned it posted that Panasonic would not repair it if certain repairs were needed. The lens was just too complicated to work on... so a replacement lens was advised. It will be interesting to see if the version 2 of the Panasonic 100-400 is the same, and if it can equal or surpass the Olympus lens with and without teleconverters. I shoot with Leica APO telephoto glass adapted to my EM1 Mk2 so I'm interested in a lighter weight zoom that could eliminate the need for a heavy tripod and having to manually focus my heavy Leica glass.
    If you do an updated review it would be interesting to see how high iso settings compare between the Olympus 20 mp sensor and the Panasonic 25 mp sensor. It looks like the G9 Mk2 sensor is the same as that of the GH6, and numerous reports have shown that at iso's under 800 the Panasonic GH6 sensor suffers loss of dynamic range at lower iso's. That concerns me as I never shoot over 800 iso.
    Thank you again for an exceptional review.

A new flagship like the G9-ii is of course very good news for the MFT platform as a whole, and will hopefully encourage OM-System to further innovate. In particular, I'd like to see an improved HHHR mode on the OM-1, with motion compensation (like the G9) and the option for higher resolution that 50MP. I have a feeling that MFT is making a bit of a comeback as a viable alternative to APS-C and FF in various use cases.

    Honestly, you're probably better off using the S5ii as a comparison point than the GH6 for a lot of computational tasks. I have a feeling the G9ii and S5ii share a lot more than just the same shell. It'll be interesting to see if any of the content makers with more money than sense disassemble a S5ii and G9ii side by side. I won't say for certain, but it would only make sense that the main boards are probably almost identical as well aside from the sensor package, any voltage regulation that might be changed for the different package, and obviously the firmware. It's my theory that's one main reasons the G9ii got into production. If they reuse as much of the S5ii as possible, they cut cost on tooling, engineering, etc. Let's just say it would have been impossible for a GX8ii that a LOT of people wanted to be the MFT camera they made. That would have required all new tooling, board design, basically everything from scratch aside from reusing existing circuits where possible from the GH6 for the sensor package and S5ii for the processor, memory, etc.
    I'm a tad torn, I'd like to upgrade from my work/personal kit that's an E-M5iii and G9, but I also don't exactly feel like it's required with how solid the G9 still is after all the updates over the years. At the least, I'm going to wait to see discounts/used bodies go up for sale to compare the prices. That'll give ample time for some firmware fixes if needed and for proper hands-on experience. I wouldn't say handheld hires isn't usable in the real world. I've used it while shooting indoor portraits where there's a complex pattern or material to retain detail. I'm content with 40mp for that or even the standard 20 just with the finer detail already baked in.
    That also gives time for my dream Sigma CMOS APS-C L-mount camera to be announced to be a companion for my Leica CL. I really want a merge between a fp and a quattro shell that uses the fp menus/features and improved (I honestly can't tell that much, but I only shoot stills) fp L AF. I'd even take reusing the fp shell like the G9ii did the S5ii, just maybe with a tilt screen that retains weather sealing. Better to keep an evf without paying 400 usd would be a quattro chopped down to match the l-mount flange distance and an update touch screen.

    Appreciate for a more balanced review. Yes, when I first saw Emily comparison content, i questioned her on her IBIS test, AF box as well as the lack of mentioning on buffer issue (once you hit the buffer you need to wait till it clears before you can shoot again when shooting in high frame rate of 20FPS or 60FPS). I love her contents but she clearly is bias on this review; G9II vs OM-1. This is not helping Lumix IMHO. People need to feel they can trust the information fully.
    Anyhow, what I really like in G9II is larger buffer size, better video capabilities and better human detection. I do like more MP of course, but it is insignificant to my purchasing decision. From various reviews I have seen G9II AF really sticky and will detect people even if they wear glasses, google, hats, etc. OM-1 is behind on this. I do own 2 OM-1 and would love OMDS to improve Video AF and make Human detection better. Hopefully the new major FW update is on the horizons.

    @10:04 Check out Richard Wong true side-by side IS test/comparison of G9II. It beaten black&blue almost all cameras except for OM-1. They were the same at 12mm but G9II still was better than OM-1 at 60mm. His comparison lacks crucial comparison of SyncIS vs DualIS but I doubt one will be any better than the other. The problem with OM-1 is that most native Olympus lenses are not Sync-stabilized. For instance its 40-150mm 2.8 PRO is not. 12-40mm is not. 100-400mm is not. Sync-stabilized telephoto lenses from Olympus are INSANELY overpriced, whereas Panasonic has Power O.I.S. stabilized lenses for every budget.

    The very fact that despite they share the same physical mount, Panasonic and Oympus lenses are certainly NOT completely interchangeable across the brand's bodies due to
    1. The lack of stabilization synchronicity of the lenses and bodies (This is very important if you are like me who frequently uses the longer focal length lenses for handheld shooting)
    2. The lack of custom corrections of the lenses' aberrations and other optical artifacts
    Yes, the AF, AE usually works (again on my Oympus EM1 Mk2, and Mk3 bodies that have phase detect AF, most Panasonic lenses have been tested inferior at AF in terms of speed and reliability on these bodies compared to native Olympus lenses) but that could well be defined as interchangeable for some people. Do I think the Panasonic G9 Mk2 is the better buy than the OM1? As a video shooter mostly and not a still photographer I would say yes. However, that's a moot point in practice because it depends a lot more on WHAT SYSTEM YOU ALREADY OWN than which one is better than the other unless you are willing to dump all your investment and start anew or living with a somewhat better body, or somewhat better lens and sacrifice some important functionalities.

    MFNerds video on the G9 mkii showed the AF on the OM1 to be quite poor compared to it. I don't know if its user error or that the OM1's auto focus just isnt up to par. This is the main argument for me to purchase an OM1 as I wouldnt mind learning about the camera if it meant better performance. Plus i prefer the sleeker design of the OM1 over the G9 MKii. Thank you for your take.

      My OM1 has a very poor AF compared to my new Sony ZVE-1 specially for video and portraits & sports😔 I will keep it because for Macro, with the 60mm it is always my favorite combo . If the new G9 II has a better AF, I will buy it. 👍

      @@limagepicture9023it is true. Om-1 video af isn’t the best and especially comparing against Sony latest offerings and there isn’t any if or but about it. It is still decent but won’t be as reliable. Af for photo is fine. I reckon G9 2 will be better in this regard.

    I prefer the Olympus-derived OM-1. I own several cameras, including Nikon, and the Lumix GH6, which is a fantastic camera, but my favorite camera by far is the Olympus. It feels comfortable in my hands, the controls and menu are simple and intuitive, the image focusing are accurate and quick. I can take amazingly sharp pictures of bees buzzing from flower to flower. While the Lumix misses most shots with blurry images. I especially like that M43 lenses are compact, lighter and unobtrusive when compared to APS-C and full-frame counterparts. I am well aware of the ISO limitations but my photos are usually in well-lit environments, so for me it is perfect.

    Seeing your and Emily's review I think any layman would understand in which system both your heart lies 😉 But what I agree strongly is it's a great time to be a part of the m43 system. I remember some CZcamsrs writing off the format a few years back ( Tony Mony etc.).
    As I mentioned in Emily's video as well, a few observations from me as an intermediate/hobbyist shooter having shot with both systems (EM1's /OM1 & G9)
    1. I love the material used in the Panasonic camera grip and the matte black color ❤ I find it better than Olympus.
    2. 3.6K vs. 5.7 K dot EVF is quite a difference. I think you would notice more than a difference in LCD resolution. I appreciate a more detailed EVF when shooting vintage lenses on m43.
    3. The image stabilization on G9 mkii looks superb for video. OM1 might be able to make focusing more sticky and accurate via firmware update but I don't think they can match up with the Pana's IS ( This is after watching Emily's video. Since I hardly shoot videos I have no way of knowing what is accurate)
    4. Computational modes like Live ND and Live Composite are super useful on my EM1s and open up a whole new world.
    5. Olympus lenses have always been more difficult to procure in the used market (in India) and generally more expensive than Lumix lenses. So I've always ended up using Pana lenses on Olympus bodies. It would be great if Olympus allowed better compatibility with Pana lenses and vice-versa. In recent times both companies seem to have a step-brotherly attitude towards one another. 😵‍💫
    I'm sure we'll soon see real-world tests. As a stills photographer, I prefer the Olympus system. But I don't think anyone will be unhappy with either option.
    Peace Out!

    OM-1 still have the advantages of having (i) focus stacking and (ii) Live ND which G9 II does not support yet (but possible in the future with firmware update).
    I think G9 II should appeal to you as these features are rarely needed in portrait photography and you have mentioned you want a camera with more than 20M pixels to meet the potential requirement of your agent. I understand you have the GH6 already which has the same sensor resolution as G9 II (25M) but the latter has PDAF. The only drawback of G9 II compared to GH6 is it may stop working sooner when taking video because of no cooling fan.

    The original G9 has the most comfortable grip I've ever used, and the original S5 is a step backwards in that matter. I've only handled a OM1 briefly but it definitely felt better than the S5. It's a shame that Panasonic chose to change to the S5 style.

    @4:02 Reviewers don't provide side-by-side handling comparisons between cameras. They praise most of them except maybe for older Sony. There is no such thing as universally best design, because people have different "body designs". For instance Chris praise OM-1 because he has smaller hands whereas Jordan prefer bigger bodies. And yes ergonomics are great on OM-1, but for me OM-1 is a bit too small, the body is WAY to low without the support for pinky finger and the shutter button is located too high. Also the grip could have been 2mm deeper and there are no affordable bottom plates for that model (I used E-M1 II with one). For instance I find GH6 more comfortable in the hand. And the Canon R5 with bottom plate. And the R7 with leather case. Although I prefer front dial placement on OM-1 over the Canon. Also, Olympus lack third wheel on the back while Panasonic, Sony and Canon R5 has one, even though Olympus lenses consistently lack apeture ring. Is that all a problem? Of course not. But that just goes to show that this argument is... subjective to put it mildly.

    Pay close attention at 7:32 to video AF. Look at the BG blur when he is walking, the Panasonic adjusts the video AF in steps, as you can see in the bokeh. The OM1 has much smoother bokeh transitions, which reflects the more smooth following. It may not be as "fast" but for video, when was snap AF a good thing? I would prefer more smooth, cinematic AF than fast snappy steps, which is why i sold my XH2s. The G9II has great features but the video AF still needs work, even if it's said to be better than the OM1. It's not.

    To me om cant touch lumix based on the video cappabilities alone. It has 25mp instead of 20mp as well which is a very nice 25% bump in Resolution. I like the lumix colors more as well.

      Either OM-1 and G9II are great. As per DP Review's recent video, my experience is that OM-1 is lighter, smaller and has better grip than G9II. Battery life is also far superior with OM-1. Image Quality is also slightly ahead, due to the new BSI sensor. G9II has higher resolution, may be slightly better tracking and far superior video features. This is the summary and hope it helps you decide.

    I had a Panasonic SR1, paired with the 50mm f1.4 and I treated it like I treat my OM1 with the 25mm f1.2 in the rain. They are no where near the same weather-sealing. The Panasonic died with a short after a ten minute shoot in light rain. The OM1 and all my other EM cameras can stand hours and hours of heavy rain. Absolutely zero comparison in weather sealing in my opinion.
    Anyway, I blew up a very expensive camera to find that out. My Olympus \ OM System cameras take a wet weather bearing. And have never skipped a beat. Just thought I’d share my experience…. I let them
    Get totally soaked… and
    Keep working them.

      @@gerrymac5865 I have been shooting Olympus since the original EM5 and loved them all. But they can’t come close to the image quality of my D850. Especially in higher iso. Shooting it with the 200-500 really isn’t that much more larger than my EM1x and 300mm. For street put the 50mm on and it is as easy to pack around as my EM1.2.
