  • This video is made possible by the generous support of Early American Coppers. If you collect large cents and half cents, there is no better community of collectors to be part of. Visit www.eacs.org to join.
In this video, we break down what it takes to pursue one of the most exciting type sets in the U.S. series. Large cents were struck from 1793 to 1857, when the Congress eliminated the large one cent and half cent coins and opted for a smaller one cent coin. The Lincoln cent that we use today traces its roots to this pivotal moment in numismatic history.

It took me quite a while to assemble complete sets of both half and large cents. The 1796 half cent and the 1799 & 1823 large were expensive. The 1793's were not cheap either. Condition ranges from good to ms. They are just so historical and fascinating. Pretty hard for the average collector of today to put these sets together. Prices have really increased since I purchased mine in the '70s.

I really enjoy your knowledge and easy going nature Charles! Recently just acquired and 1850 half cent raw that I just love! I’m thinking of sending it in because it looks uncirculated. Looking forward to EAC coming to Portland this year! Keep up the good work!

People clean all sorts of coins and if you aren't familiar with the proper techniques and risks involved, you can really damage them. We posted a video on our channel about proper copper coin preservation techniques. Give it a quick look: czcams.com/video/U4PVFXM2atw/video.html
