Building a Captured Type 5 Chi-Ri Prototype (Fine Molds 1/35)

- Medium tank Type 5 Chi-Ri was a Japanese tank developed late during World War 2. Designed to be more powerful than the U.S. M4 Sherman, it was basically a Japanese Panther.
One prototype was partially finished and tested by the end of the war, and was captured by the occupation forces and shipped to USA for evaluation at Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Its fate is unknown, but it was most likely scrapped.
There are a few photos showing this tank with its gun missing, and that's exactly what we're gonna be replicating in this video.
The 1/35 kit from Fine Molds is overall very nice, with high quality molds, but it's the overly complicated tracks that rule this kit out as a quick weekend build.

Okay mates, how many of you expected me to build this big boi as a what-if 46+ vehicle?
could you do a video on how to add battle damage like bullets and tank shells/ like ricochet and non-penetration in the armor pls and thanks for all the tips
Could you build a Chi-Ha and make the 'You Chi-ed your last Ha joke'?
You are the master Mr. Night Shift
if you want to make the hatch open you can do it easily , drill a hole in the hinges . use a PE saw and cut the hatch hinges from the hull hinges and insert a wire in it to use as axle . you now have more realistic and FUNCTIONING hatches !
Excellent video Martin. Not a '46 what if please.
Maybe a '46 waiting for examination by its allied captors or in a storage/scrapyard.
Like Shep Paine said: "a modeller: a mixture of artist, engineer, microbiologist and a Buddhist monk". Great work man !!!
"weighed down with somethig heavy"
puts maus on top of it
T H I C C
なにぃ!?
Right after he said that, CZcams inserted one of those commercials with heavy women using some kind of slimming panty!
If youre had to make the weight of the Maus in 1:35 Scale, it must weight 5371.43 kilos or 5,371 tonnes... THATS A HEAVY GERMAN BOI
bodek *NANI?*
"But I'm from Eastern Europe, we don't have money for such capitalist tools" okay this sentence killed me xDDDD
I was drinking water when he said that.
I'm luck I didn't choke.
I'm from Eastern Europe too and it's totally true.
@@Lebenspiel Yeah I totaly feel that, I'm from Hungary :D
It wasn't that long ago when I was using hammers and sickles to build my models!
Yes i agree with that. Here in Croatia we make our own made tools a lot
UNESCO considers assembling tracks for model tanks a human rights violation. Needless to say, it's a favored torture method in Guantanamo Bay.
So that's where those pre-assembled tracks on ebay come from!
For a now, your channel is my favorite modeling channel [anymore]. Keep going on. (Please)
Your channel has quickly become my favourite, not just for the quality modelling but also the humour. Keep up the excellent work.
The more I watch these kind of videos the more I think you modelers are crazy. I love it.
You are, by far, the best scale modeling channel here! I really enjoy the content you put out! You inspire me to take my scale models to the next level and actually show me how to take them to the next level! Thank you for all the hard work you put into your videos, I really appreciate it and they help a lot!

The surface is amazing, I can't wait for the spare no expense series

As always an entertaining education in your skills. And of course the best narration mixed with humour. I've almost stopped watching other channels now because I doubt there's much I could learn from anyone else.
Nice work; looking forward to the paint!

This wa brilliant to see and a joy to watch. Very detailed and light hearted!!
My relaxing moment of the week.
thank you
Yes! I wanted you to build this tank.
NANI?! Those tracks are a model in of themselves. Good work as always.
I learned just as much... perhaps even more construction techniques, watching this live demo than all the content that Adam Wilder and Mig Jimenez stuff into their books, not to take away from their incredible content, but watching it live with your tips and the reasons "why" behind them... I'm hard pressed to find this level of modeling education anywhere else. Outstanding stuff Martin!
Cheers!
Thanks a lot! BTW I learned most stuff from Adam Wilder’s books 😁 Those are really, really good
cant wait to the finish model!
That looks amazing. I really need to put more effort into the models I build. Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to see what it looks like with paint.
Great vid Night Shift. Loved the "nani" part! Interesting model, the Chi-Ri was an interesting tank for sure.

Started watching modelling videos 2 days ago. Watched ModelChili Scale Models and PLASMO - plastic models and you are by far the most interesting one! Great explanations, the tutorial videos are a great help for beginners (haven't even bought my first model yet) and the videos are just so easy to watch due to your funny nature! Keep up your great work!
Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated!
I just got flashbacks on building tiger 1 tracks on the RFM tiger 1
Our Aunt Carla worked at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds and told us years ago about a "strange Jap tank" and other captured military armor. It was all scrapped in the mid 1950s.
New to the hobby, best thing I've seen.
Yes! Yes! ;) Thanks for the great and refreshing videos! I love your sense of humor.
Capitalist toys....;) ;) ;)

Maybe one day we'll get to 100 videos :)
Your work is awesome... 😊
You should be doing stand-up! Please continue bombarding us with all this amazing content, my friend!
Another great build sir. I'm not usually into what if builds but that looks really cool. I also love that Maus. Would like to see more photos of it!
Yooo this isn't a what-if build at all! This is actually how the tank looked in real life... almost :)
Also, I've got some photos of that Maus on my Instagram, link is in the description of this video.
Ok. My mistake!! Won't happen again lol
Those track steps are worth it! Better than rubber.
Awesome build !
And yes the Chi-Ri was a massive vehicle ! It is much larger than Tiger 1 and even slightly larger than the Tiger 2.
It really caught me off guard!
Thank you for making your modle fun and great ideas. It's suppose to be fun in your case also funny 😜
NANI?! 😂😂
Great job, as usual! Cheers
haha you are such a funny guy, i like your editing and presenting style! Keep on going my friend, you rock!
Fine molds is re releasing their japanese tanks series with link and length tracks which is a great. So far we have Ho-Ni III (also with full interior), Chi-Nu and Chi-Nu Kai / II. All new releases have updated parts (tracks and intetior) listed on the box front.
4:54 *ping ....... very distant sound of wire bouncing into another dimension
And later I found it when I stepped on it so hard it punctured my foot!
@@NightShiftScaleModels ... instantly supported the piece you wanted for the next cut ...we know .. but we always forget ... we will learn again for next time ....... wont we ? ;D
fastest way to find a random bit of wire? Walk around bare foot you'll soon find where it is
10:47 instantly subscribed and liked!! Great stuff!!!
Love your videos dude! Keep it up:)
Great done, but I was tired yesterday, and probably when you say "close your eyes" I did it and I fall asleep. So, you are very convincing. ;)
Awesome channel buddy
For sanding sharp corner i makemy own tools from sheet styrene. A decent strong thickness i then glue sanding paper and bevel the edges inward at the top so it flares out at the sanding part
7:58 Seeing as the japanese did similar with the O-I prototype, I think this is the right choice.
Dude, keep up your work! I love your channel and your videos. Your tanks look awesome! And all those details... man you can be proud of your models! Right now, youre my favourite channel on CZcams! I really want to see the finished project now...
Greetings from Germany!
