A Scale Model.... Restoration??? | Old KV-220-2 Rebuild | 1/72 PST

  • Rebuilding an old model can feel very rewarding. The results can be almost as good as building a new kit, just with some extra sentimental value. Restoring your old kits can also be a great way to improve your construction skills. It's just important to evaluate the model and decide if it's worth saving, or if it's easier and more time efficient to just buy a new kit and start over.
I've got this model several years ago from a friend who builds airplanes and this was his first and last attempt at building a 1/72 scale tank. The build was overall pretty decent except the tracks and running gear where it's clear he had some issues. However these can be, as is often the case, saved with layers of mud, but that's a story for another time.

Fun fact: I narrated this video 2 days after a very invasive visit to my dentist (he and his tools were invasive, not me). So my mouth looked like a No Man's Land and it hurt just as much. I had serious problems trying to pronounce like half of all the English words... and just my luck, I had to narrate my longest video yet. The uncut narration with all the outtakes was over 1 hour long lol.
Also, this comment section is absolutely insane xD
    You guys are the best.

I think it's a great idea to renovate old models rather than just building new ones; it can be a challenge to your / our modelling skills to take something that's been built and try and improve it with just spare parts and scratch building. Great stuff.

I actually did the same with a semi rare bandai model I found at a second hand shop. It is a 1/24 early production Tiger with the rounded cheecks turret made by Krup. It has winter camouflage and very heavy die cast(?) figures. It was missing some parts I tryed to build from scratch. And I weathered it some more along with the tracks. I could be made into a RC piece. It is fully detailed on the inside as well. Suspension works. Motor details really glad I picked that up.

I've been modeling for over 40 years. It's always blown my mind how modelers seem to HAVE to replicate exactly the tank/model they're building.
Look at pictures of the day, there was a lot more mods than we would like to believe. Also, there is nothing wrong in adding a detail,
no matter how exact or perfect, to bring some visual interest to the model. All of the mods you've done, will only be detected by an amateur war historian. No one else will know.
How ever, those added details will impress anyone looking at it. So, don't get your panties in a bunch about historical accuracy. Have fun. That's what it's all about!

This is fucking fantastic. I adore restoration videos, and yours is my favorite of them all. Perhaps this won't be the only restoration video from you? That'd be ten outta ten.

Stronk Tank! :) There's a fella who buys Games Workshop models on ebay, and "fixes" them so they're better looking than what the original owner did. It is an interesting hobby challenge to take on! Your little flourishes, and awesome techniques have done this little guy well sir!

Stronk Tenk. Nice save. Yeah I've had a couple rescues through the years. They can be fun.
