    My dad lives on an airfield in middle Georgia. His neighbor has a Yak in his hangar. He cranks it up a few times each fall and spring, flies it around to neighboring airfields, and then puts it away after a little maintenance. The sound is quite unique among planes from that time. Very aggressive and dangerous sounding - pretty fast, too. Not mustang fast, but badass when he comes by for a low pass.

    • @ScottKenny1978
      @ScottKenny1978 Před 2 lety +1

      The Soviets had an interesting idea about how to build their engines. If the aircraft wasn't expected to last more than 200 hours in flight, they'd push the engine hard and have it last about 250 hours between overhauls.
      While the Merlin in a Mustang is 2500 hours TBO, if I remember correctly.
      So their engines are running a lot harder, more horsepower per liter, more like a race engine than an aircraft engine.

    • @vasili1207
      @vasili1207 Před 2 lety

      @@ScottKenny1978 not true... they couldn't build engines with tolerances like us... hence you get less power. nothing like a race engine at all a true race engine, lets use your example... the soviets would be Nascar and allies would be Formula one ...even with all the modern f1 electronics off the engine that motor would destroy a nascar in a straight line..
      soviet engines had a short life because bad tolerances poor fuel and poor lubrication... also there maintenance was a bit sketchy there just dirty engines

    • @ScottKenny1978
      @ScottKenny1978 Před 2 lety

      @@vasili1207 right.
      The point is that they didn't bother with the high quality engineering and R&D to make it last 2500 hours before it needed an overhaul when the airplane it was in wasn't expected to fly more than 200 hours before being shot down. If what they had would run for 1000 hours at American power levels, they'd bump up compression ratio and/or boost pressure to get more performance out of it, _even if that quartered the life of the engine in the process!_

      5? 3? you have pretty mach shelve space if you can afford that luxury of having same kit in different paint schemes. I'm glad Arma have yak in product line as there are very few 1/72 ww2 soviet aircraft kits of a really good quality. I have Arma's yak, hurricane and pzl-7. And only while writing this I realised that I've probably made a mistake - I had some space on my pacific theatre shelve and just ordered tamiya's corsair... without considering arma's wildcat... just forgot abou it ((
