Painting with CUSTOM STENCILS - Type 5 Chi-Ri (Fine Molds 1/35)

  • The captured Type 5 prototype was painted in plain Parched Grass (Karekusa-iro) paint. It sported large hand-painted texts on the turret, sides and front of the hull. Because these are well documented on historical photographs, I decided to digitally trace them and send to my friend Alex Wegner from Solidscale who made them into airbrush stencils. I also did some light distressing on this model, however it didn't turn out exactly how I expected...

    Hey mates, so a lot of you were asking for some reference pictures for this tank. Like I said, they are all copyrighted and I can't put them in my videos.
    However here's a link to one of them: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/Chi-Ri.JPG
    They're easy to google but I'll most likely start putting links to reference pictures in the video description.

    I love your presentation style mate, I've used Tipex (typing correction paper) in the past to create chalk markings, tape the Tipex to the model and then scribble away on it and the scribble is transferred to the models surface.
    I used it to mark the different calibre of shell hits on a Panther tank used by the US for ballistic testing in late 1944 and for writing cyrillic on a KV1.
    Really fine pencil thin lines are possible and actually look like they've been chalked on.
    It went really well and just needing sealing in afterwards.
    I don't have any pictures of them because this happened bloody years ago.
    Keep up the great work, your content is fantastic!
    Happy modelling!

    As a stencil artist, let me tell you, the terminology was correct. There is overspray, underspray and bleeding - all nasty things that need to be avoided. You did a fine job there. Ghetto tip: if you don't have adhesive stencils you might give the backside of your stencil a coat of spray adhesive and let it dry until it is tacky - good to avoid underspray. I really enjoy your humor and great work, keep it up.

    Great videos. If you were painting that tyical IJA three done camo when you go to putting oil paints over the colours would you use different oils for each colour or just use the same mix of oils for the whole tank? And generally what's the trick to selecting the right oil colours for your base coat?

    • @NightShiftScaleModels
      @NightShiftScaleModels  Před 5 lety +1

      Thanks! I would choose colours that would work with each camouflage paint and blend them over the entire model. Then, if necessary, I would pick specific oils for each camo pattern and add some highlights, shadows, or just some extra discoloration here and there.
      Picking the right colours is mostly about finding ones that have something to do with the base paint. Example: for a dark yellow model, white, yellow, brown... On the other hand, adding red to a dark grey model wouldn't work. I'll be blending oils on this model in the next video.
