3:00 I feel like people missed this point a lot. People think the Diamonds were easily forgiven, but Steven never explicitly forgives them for what they’ve done. He basically keeps them at an arms length and the only reason he helped them deal with their issues in the first place was to be able to save all the corrupted gems. The Diamonds are basically the equivalent to those family members that you keep at a distance because they’ve been awful in the past. The Diamonds in Future are now actively trying to get better, but also display a lack of empathy towards Steven’s trauma by seemingly expecting him to immediately forgive them just because they’ve improved. I think them participating in the hug is the first instance where they actually express that they care about him without expecting anything back.

Yeah, because when I was going through a mental health crisis last year, my family and friends should have just killed me to end it all. That would have solved everything.

I think, unfortunately, that line of thought tends to stem from two things; lack of knowledge regarding mental health and the want for traditional "good vs. bad" storytelling.

I think a lot of people expected more destruction in the finale of Future, since the Corrupted Steven theory was being pushed so much throughout the series. The idea of someone like Steven, who tries to be passive and non-violent, snapping and becoming a rampaging monster is a neat one. I get why some people weren’t satisfied by it, but it should’ve been expected ever since Future started.
Rebecca herself said Future was going to be a “limited” series, so obviously things had to go by at a quicker pace to fit what she and The Crewniverse were going for. I think people may have set their expectations too high for the finale by pushing so hard on the whole “Steven needs Therapy/Corrupted Steven” thing.
I’m guilty of it, too. I mean, yeah, it wasn’t the perfect series, but I’m happy with how it ended. I just think people set the series so high on a pedestal that they ended up feeling underwhelmed by the end result.

    • @hugenerd97

I agree. My friend absolutely hated Snow Day when it first aired because we had such extremely high expectations for the episode. We thought we might get recap, that Connie would be there, that it might parallel “3 Gems and a Baby.” I actually am glad there wasn’t to much destruction. I think if Steven had done something like destroying Little Homeworld or hurting someone, I think that would’ve been his point of no return. I don’t think he would’ve been able to recover if there had been much destruction.

They DID give us an epic fight and look what happened. It ended with Steven’s mental health getting even worse.
I love the hug ending, also because it was exactly how I predicted ❤️🌸
Before the finale, many people said Connie would be the one save him. Instead, I said that while Connie is necessary, her love wouldn’t be enough, because this wasn’t about “just her”, but it was about “everyone helped by Steven”. He needed more love in its many forms. I totally saw it coming, that the community wouldn't be happy with the ending. There was just no way to "solve" all the issues Steven had with the number of episodes we got. When people were saying he was going to leave Beach City, I knew it was going to be super bittersweet and that things would be left unresolved. People go for YEARS of therapy to be able to cope with some of their mental issues and even just coping can be them getting to the starting line at best. Hell, sometimes people just never get better and just learn to live with things. Being in life threatening situations from the age of 13 and having to continuously fight for 2 friggin' years is soooo tremendously ruinous for even people trained to DEAL with life threatening situations. I'll admit I wasn't 100% happy with the ending (Thought the whole "oh we didn't want to make things harder for you so we're going to make it seem like everything is chill" took a bit of the impact away from the final mood of just moving on without normalcy being there anymore), but I'm happy it did end with an openedness to it. It's the only way for it to make sense.

    • @NoirRaven
      @NoirRaven Před 4 lety +29

Personally, I was really insulted by how little time Steven had a therapist before moving out; it should've taken him years to get to that point. I also didn't like that Connie was coaching him through this plan instead of the other way around. It's an easy way to show the character's grown without spelling it out.
If I had written this, I wouldn't have skipped the recovery but if I was forced to:
      - first, there would be another two year time skip.
      - second, instead of Connie saying goodbye to him, Steven's actually saying goodbye to her as she's getting into college a year early and show him be a little torn but coping with the fear better by admitting this when she asks about his feelings.
      - third, I would've shown Jasper's progress by having her patch things up with Amethyst and having some quartz friends (probably crazy lace to tie up that time they fused.)
      - the gems would be the last he said goodbye to and there wouldn't be a fakeout. Instead, they'd be very touched by all of the gifts Steven gives them and cry but not be _as_ emotional as the little homeworld trio was because they've grown as characters too. I feel it's important that they retain their growth despite the situation.
      - I would've given Greg his own place. It's weird that he's going to be bumming it in his son's old room. I may have given that room to Jasper as she'd need some hands-on help with the gems.
      - Steven would have a proper chaperone to accompany him on his journey. Possibly a life coach to help him stay level headed as he's mentally unstable and could go Kaiju on an unsuspecting populace. Not sure who that would be. Maybe the cherry quartz he helped in the beginning of the mini series? I want it to be Spinel but it's too soon for that. I also would've liked it to have been Jasper as she too, could've use a world tour to find herself.
      - I'd also give Steven a destination. He's going to apply for a special learner's program in some central state to catch up on the grade school he missed so he can then get his GED and he'd have a new therapist to meet there. I'd also mention a psychiatrist because I believe Steven will need to be on sedatives in order to control his outbursts. (The fact that a therapist was all he needed to quell that is insulting and dangerous as these fits/symptoms don't go away with therapy.)
Older Steven would look more like the teen self we saw in too many birthdays, with better skin but definitely looking tired as people with depression tend to do.
Connie would have a figure now but still be rather plain, looking similar to Stevonnie.
I would even dedicate a scene for onion finally looking older and getting speech therapy because God does that kid need counseling.

It's pretty clear especially in the final episode that he's not completely healed, and based on the mental issues that were explored in Future I think any attempt to make it so he's fully healed in the final episode would be cheap and shallow even if it wasn't a hug. The issues Steven has been dealing with aren't things that can be resolved after a single episode event.

I was glad that they mentioned therapy and that there was a time skip that happened post-hug. Also, I feel that the leaving the therapy off-screen felt appropriate, since therapy is something that one goes through and is not just very personal, but a very individual experience. Not depicting it, while makes it open-ended and perhaps a bit of a ??? space for people who have never gone through therapy, prevents the potential problem of forming assumptions of what therapy is like or not like because media depiction. I hadn't heard about Rebecca Sugar weighing in on that, so that was cool to find out from this video. :) Therapy is not about performance, it's about healing. Long road, yo.

In truth, I agree with everything that was stated in this video, for the most part. Even if the crystal gems, Connie, lion, Greg, Spinel, and the diamonds could physically stop the monster Steven, that would not have solved the issue. The corrupted Steven was a result of trauma and psychological damage. It was nice of the diamonds to help Steven because despite all the terrible things they've done, the diamonds were truly sorry for what they put Steven Universe through. It made sense for love from Steven's closest friends and his family to help start to heal the damage Steven has had.

That, and they already lost Pink. Finally, realizing Steven is Steven and accepting him as such without compensation was one step in the road to recovery at least for the diamonds. I still wish that Steven made peace with Rose/Pink. I always felt that it was a major source of trauma for him that never was resolved. Likewise, shining a light on how she came from the petulant and bratty to the naive yet caring to the one who made peace with herself to give up her form to create Steven was one aspect that still feels like something that can be mined. Nevertheless, SUF was a wonderful sendoff and I hope one day, we'll see this world again.

I hate when people confuse “I didn’t want it to go this way” with “bad writing”. People WANTED it to end with some grand fight or more destruction or something, without consideration of how it would work with the themes. Bad writing would be contradicting their own themes or characters being inconsistent, but they’ve stayed consistent with what the messages and themes are that they want to teach, even now.

    • @shawnboahene5231
      @shawnboahene5231 Před 4 lety +4

this was bad writing. Why would Steven who never shown any sort of Trauma in both the movie and previous series now experience it and suddenly have glowing pink powers that are supposed to be in response to trauma but never activated when his life was in danger? Why did the Gems not notice Steven’s pink glowing powers and destructive impulses until now? Why wouldn’t Garnet’s future vision not pick up on the fact this would happen or at least that Steven was going through mental issues? Why would character like Steven who is an overly emotional open book hide his emotions and problems from the Gems when in the previous seasons he told them everything? Why did monster Steven respond to the hug if White Diamond told everyone that Steven wasn’t in there anymore, so why would he be receptive to hug from his friends and family if in that form they were strangers to him? The Crew seemed to sacrifice their characters for this mental illness plot which actual just makes people with metal health issues look dangerous and unstable. The series also raises more questions than answers, characters were very inconsistent, and the theme were very muddled. So I would say that this is bad writing

    • @comiccinema8177
      @comiccinema8177 Před 4 lety +34

shawn Boahene You don’t know how trauma works at all clearly. It doesn’t manifest while you’re distracting yourself with other tasks and everything. Steven hadn’t really come to terms with his trauma because he was busy building Little Homeworld and fixing the damage the Diamonds had caused. Now here, with nothing else to do, his personal issues are out front and center. That’s how actual trauma and PTSD works, and now that it’s really manifesting itself, his pink powers are going on the fritz. Before the PTSD really started when he was fixing other problems the pink form never came up since it comes from pent up stress and anxiety. It’s not just a fighting power up, it’s stress and anxiety being let out from years of suppressing it. Which he hadn’t addressed because he was distracting himself by fixing everyone else’s issues. Exactly how PTSD works. They even show this in “Everything’s fine” when he tries to jump back into helping everyone to distract himself, but it doesn’t work because those issues are now front and center and him trying to run away from them causes him to spiral out. The Gems never noticed the powers until now because they hadn’t been active until now. Garnet’s future vision works with likelihoods and chances, and the chances Steven would be having a breakdown were low in her mind because Steven never talked to her. And he’s hiding his emotions now because he’s a teenager. Teenagers do that. And White Diamond was trying to reach Steven with mental diamond powers which doesn’t work the same way as genuine affection. It raises mental health awareness by showing people that if someone is going through something, trying to make a genuine effort to be there for them is what will help them heal. Telling them to stop or being confrontational about their problems is incorrect as the show clearly shows when confronting Steven causes him to turn into a monster. It’s not saying mental health issues make you dangerous, they just mean you need help.
So yeah, not bad writing. It REALLY helps A LOT when you pay attention, though. Doesn’t it?

This goes to show how many misconceptions there are involving mental health, so I'm grateful for Future to bring it up in conversation, even if people misunderstand it. Hell, _I_ didn't even fully understand the reason why the hug worked until others pointed it out, even though Connie says it; Steven broke down and finally showed the worst side of himself, and even after all of it, he knows his friends/family still love him. On top of it he was allowed to have a good, long cry which I know helped a lot on its own. Hopefully Future will pave way towards better understanding, education, and treatment for PTSD and mental health as a whole.

Tomstarmot Video gamer I don’t think you did watch the video. Because if you had you’d see them point this out and explain that how you’re seeing it isn’t how they were conveying it. You have to pay attention to the details. By next episode months had passed. According to Steven he’s been getting therapy for at least a portion of that. Not to mention he now has the support of his friends and family who know something is wrong. We can assume he hasn’t been hiding and running away or if he has had those relapses of behavior, they’ve been addressed. It’s stated in the video and inferred by the writers that Steven’s mental health is still very much a work in progress. He’s still working on it. He got through the crisis but he has a long road to recovery, and even then he’ll never be fully over the things he went through.
You need to realize this was a limited series. They had to go through this in a manner they could fit in the most important details. They aren’t saying a hug cures mental illness. But a show of support can help you through the worst of it and help you on the road to recovery.

I was more upset that so few of our questions were answered for an epilogue series that was advertised as “all your questions answered”. I’m not unhappy with the series as a whole, I’m just a bit upset to have had my hopes up for answers and gotten so few, all we really got was Pink Pearl’s backstory.
No treasure chest, nothing more to say on Pink or how Steven feels about her, no backstory for the Diamonds or any lore drops for how they were made, no resolutions for Jasper, mean Lapis or Blue Azurite, no mention for what happened between Amethyst and Jasper, no mention of Bismuth’s reformation.... what was even answered in this series? Boopy Schmoops We found out what happened to the zoo and the bubbled Rose Quartzes at least. That was my biggest question besides what was up with Pink Pearl after the season finale so I was pretty content.
The origins of the diamonds have never been important or plot relevant, and the only time that ever became even remotely notable was when White MIGHT (it’s just fan speculation) have indirectly implied that she was created with high expectations. That’s it. I’d rather they leave their origins ambiguous if they won’t do anything interesting with them. Otherwise what’s even the point?
Pink Diamond’s actions speak for themselves. Steven knows the good she’s done and who she became but he also knows the bad seems fine and who she once was. He just wants to distance himself from her image so he can strive to be better than her like she would have wanted. There’s not really much to delve into anymore that can’t already be directly inferred. Nothing we could be told would be new or surprising, just the same old knowledge but summed up more bluntly.
Everything else was stuff that was brought up within Steven Universe Future, so the advertising campaign technically never promised to answer questions that didn’t even exist yet.
The only things I can really say we were trolled with were Bismuth’s reformation (I was convinced she just put on physical overalls for a long time), and that motherfucking chest that’s been open since the movie. This isn’t Pulp Fiction Rebecca, what’s in the damn box-I MEAN, chest!

*slams desk THANK YOU! I am so tired of people saying that the ending was anti-climatic, that they rushed through things yadda yadda. Yeah they did rush some events and ignored many other plot elements, but what people don't understand that the "battle" against Pink Steven is not supposed to be a giant monster attack scenario; it was an allegory for someone who is having a meltdown during an intervention and the people involved are facing someone who has become a danger not just to others but themselves. Like say after being confronted they may threaten to harm themselves or others, make threats of suicide, or do something irrational because their mind has been traumatized. The giant hug Steven received is essentially a form of restrain that many use to calm someone down until they get to their senses and vent their emotions down. If you look at the scene note that Garnet, the strongest person and the one with the better mental restrain is the first to do this. Often the person with the most trust or strength is the first to hold the person down and once they control them, others join in in an effort to both control them and show solidarity and even get them to see that it's OK to feel hurt or sad and that they are much more than that.
Also THANK YOU for stating that even if Steven is better by the end of the show it doesn't mean that he is healed. As someone who was professionally diagnosed with moderate to severe depression and anxiety, while thanks to medication and treatment I am WAY better now than when I was firs diagnosed I still have my spells and still need to follow on my treatment and therapy. The final episode shows that Steven is still taking the steps to coping with his mental health and finding ways to improve himself despite the damage he suffered. Seriously this show handled mental health way better than any show had done until now, not gonna lie.

She said she hopes to explore the world again, I think that would be a good thing for the fans but also about the message of Steven. If they continued the story with him being older or even an adult could help show us that even after trauma and mental illness life can go on. It may still have ups and downs and it may not go the way you'd want but you can always make it better. Say if the show continued and blue bird was trying to start a rebellion(roundtable theory) that could help show that Steven may still have problems he's working on but that he could be doing much better, much like victims of mental illnesses. I think showing us that you can change is the ultimate message of the show and continuing after some time away would help show this message

I think the distinction between the corruption of the gems and steven's transformation can be best exemplified in what happened after they were both undone: Steven went to therapy, and the uncorrupted gems went and started Little Homeworld. The gems didn't need therapy (and at no point was it established that the uncorrupted gems went to therapy, just Little Homeschool), and thus I think it highly inaccurate to call what happened to Steven corruption.
I think of it like the difference between malicious computer code and trauma. If you've got a virus, you can repair the corrupted data and restore functionality, and the fact that it took four diamonds to do it indicates how difficult a task it was. However, that's different from resolving trauma, which often requires years of therapy, a process the uncorrupted gems never underwent.
If corruption was so traumatic, then the gems would've needed to be treated for trauma. But we never saw that even hinted at at any point. Thus I think it inaccurate to call what happened to Steven corruption.

It’s much deeper than just a hug, and I’m glad you put it into a video, because I loved how the show wrapped up in that way, it’s not exactly a lose end, just a way to let people imagine what happened after the end.
I realized after it ended, that I relate to Steven a lot in the way where he doesn’t know exactly who he is, he’s confused, angry, sad about it. He want to stay the same because the people around him are comfortable with that. But it’s not what he needed. He needed to be his own person, and that’s a really hard thing to find after dealing with trauma and threatening things all of your life. And I relate to him in all of those aspects, which is why the ending resonated SO MUCH with me. I honestly owe Steven universe a lot and I haven’t been giving it the credit it deserves for putting what I’ve been struggling with into a show. I was very underwhelmed when I watched the finale for the first time, but when I watched the last 2 episodes a few more times and watched this video, I started to like and appreciate it a lot more. Now the only thing I’m upset with in this epilogue series is bluebird’s disappearance and what’s in the chest!

the hug is him realizing he deserves to be loved that he was worth more then what he thought he thought he was a monster so he felt worthless "but if all these people still love me when im a monster i cant be all bad right?" this hug lead him to the second step to recovering(first step being realizing there is a problem) which is realizing his mind is making everything seem worse then it really was
i trully believe if you feel like an monster it shows that your not really a monster people who are bad dont feel bad doing those bad things

It a nice analysis of the series finally.
    I couldn't agree more.
I see quite a few people "wanting more destruction" or "more anime fights" (witch they already subverted by showing the power fantasy training in a negative even uncomfortable light that in any other show would be positive character growth) "As well as more scenes of him really breaking down"... but I think there was a point in making it private. Therapy and self growth is not something seen by friends or family of people effected it private, and it takes time, A long time.
As for "more carnage" Steven was never trying to destroy the town in his monstrous state it was more like him having a mental break down (or what likely happen in real life panic attack) He was clinging on to his home crying out in pain and terror. He wasn't trying to destroy anything or hurt anyone but in his state he wasn't seeing state he literally saw him self as a monster. but he wasn't behaving like one (in the traditional seance of destroying the town killing people or seeking vengeance against something) it was more like a painful cry for help then anything.
The hug is just what Steven needed .. to have everyone there for him in his moment of need.
(Much like my own experiences my sister trying to make me laugh or a hug from my mom helped me though my own panic attacks. Some times all you need is someone there for you in the moment no matter how humiliating it fells in the moment to break down in front of others because you cant keep up the false facade of "everything fine" for long when your suffering..)

Oh, man, that ending hit TOO close to home.
Without going into detail, I was heavily abused as a kid. This lead me to distancing myself from my family and doing everything I could to be as different from them as possible. Even now, lashing out in anger is to me like shattering Jasper was to Steven: It shows that maybe I am just like the people that hurt me, that I am no better then them. It's to the point that, even after over 10 years of being together, my bf still seems surprised whenever I angrily yell at someone. (He's seen it maybe 5 or 6 times in just over a decade.) It's not as bad as it was, as I've found more constructive ways of showing anger. An amazing support system helps remind me that I'm only human, and I have my limits. (Also, therapy. A LOT of therapy.)
I've heard and read people complain about the ending, but I thought it was a great way to end the series. They took a serious mental disorder and treated it with respect and understanding. Hopefully, it helps people that are in a similar situation to the one I was in that there is no shame in seeking outside help and that there are people standing by you.

I feel like the reason why people reacted so negatively (i.e it's anti-climactic) to the finale is single handedly because of the stigma around mental health and lack of awareness towards it. People don't understand how much of a good finale the ending is because they never really understood what trauma is, and - all the more - what mental issues mean and how they're solved. You can never fix mental issues with brute force. You can't just punch a mental crisis away, nor you cannot just snap then expect depression, PTDS or anxiety to be manageable. It actually takes A LOT OF TIME to fix a mental health issue. It's not a physical problem after all, it's not something you can get over with by using violence.

You said it. The theme of the show was never about constant fighting and action. Love and acceptance were two of the main themes. So that finale makes sense. Even if they could fight him, it may have killed many people and shattered many gems which would not have done any favors for Steven. Pink Diamond/Rose Quartz even went as far as to beg on her knees to get a diplomatic solution but that failed and in the war, she refused to shatter any gem. Steven gets she had good intentions, but she demonstrated that her decisions were not always well thought out and did not have the most empathetic intentions. Steven is an example of being too morally strong for your own good.

The massive group didn't fix his problems, but it did pull him out of a dangerous place. You could see it building from the start of Future through to the end - Steven couldn't cope with the transition from wartime to peace. @kauske Před 3 lety +6

I wouldn't really call the SUF ending anticlimactic, IDK what kind of emotionally detached bozo you'd have to be to see it that way. We basically got to see the climax of a lifetime of fighting and trauma, and dealing with the mess his mother left for him boil over into a total mental breakdown. Then, instead of answering it with yet more violence, everyone, including many of those who hurt him in the past used a gesture to pull him back from the brink. It's a hell of a lot more climactic than the final showdown with white diamond.
I also like the open ending, it's not saying everything went back to normal, but it's not a dark conclusion either. It's open ended, with a note of hope going forward. It wraps things up rather nicely, but lets you draw your own conclusions. IMO, it's a good way to wrap up Stephen's arc, and I like it better than the rushed way the diamonds were turned around, which I think could have used at least another couple of episodes before the final confrontation, and maybe 1-2 more after it, to show a slower turnaround to how the diamonds were in the movie and homecoming, versus how they were before.

As he scrapes his claws along the backside of the cliff, near the lighthouse, he looks as though he's trying and failing to get a grasp on the world around him and himself. He's trying and hurting so badly, that he can barely comprehend whats going on around him, and is trying to grasp at the only physical thing in front of him that he knows as home.
