I always figured that when Peridot talks about homeworld being low on resources contributing to why she doesn't have most gem powers it was because the diamonds don't have Pink's liquid essence anymore to add to the injectors. Sure, Peridot is green so she's probably primarily made from Yellow and Blue, but just like how they need all the diamonds to heal the corrupted gems, they probably need a little bit from all the diamonds to fill the injectors, and resources dwindling on homeworld means that they're either running out of what they have left over of Pink's essence from era one, or, they're finding it harder and harder to produce gems without it, thus leading to Peridots no longer having most magic abilities.

I think the "Moon Goddess" was meant to be Blue Diamond. She doesn't look much like her currently but early Blue Diamond designs (including the one seen on her Moon Base mural) had a very similar pallet to the Moon Goddess statue who indeed seems to be holding a Blue Diamond. Early on, the Gems were hesitant to go into the history of the invasion and of the Diamonds, so they replaced "Blue Diamond" with "Moon Goddess" and Steven didn't know enough to find that questionable.

I have a bit to add to this! So the classic “moon goddess” is Selene, right? Well, in Greek mythology, gods and goddesses often have certain gemstones that honor them. Moonstone and Selenite are excellent crystals for honoring Selene. Moonstone shimmers with her passage. Selenite, named for her because of its blue white silvery appearance. I was thinking that perhaps she’s holding a Diamond-cut moonstone! While we never meet a canon gem with either of these stones in the show, I’d say it’s possible that they exist, and they do in a ton of Fanon. Perhaps it was the Greek gods in their version of Earth that created the Diamonds. It wouldn’t be too far off, right? They created complex organic life so surely they could create gemstones with their own life and will, even if they are compared to AI.

Yeah in a way all of season one lead us to believe that there was so much more going on. I think the writers were still not sure what avenue they wanted to go down, season one seemed like it was gonna take the show in a magical diection, not sci-fi. Some theorize that this shift can be explained by the fact many dimensions were crossed via the time hourglass. Shifted from a magical universe with OG Steven into a science based universe with new Steven.

I think it was mostly about the shift in Steven’s perspective. When he was younger an more naive, he saw the gems as magical superheroes, but as he got older and learned more, he became more aware to the dark and more alien side of the gems. Since the show is always shown through Steven’s eyes, it makes sense that we would see things differently too.
Of course, the writers were also probably trying to figure out what to do with the show, I’m just saying that they did have a lot this stuff planned and were just trying to reveal it in a more interesting and shocking way.

Steven got upset by this, so they sent him on another mission... which also turned out to be an artificial test.

The truth is that the writing on Steven Universe was not perfect. And that’s ok. This is our beloved series that shaped a lot of our childhoods, but there were definitely some oversights.
The Crewniverse was under strict timelines which was very stressful, that’s why some moments in Steven Universe felt rushed and some things were overlooked.
Also whenever you’re collaborating in any art form some ideas have to be sacrificed.
Not only that but some ideas evolve and change for the better, or change completely.

For the 'low on resources' mystery, that's sort of answered if you read between the lines. Gems were revealed covertly to be made from fluids that the diamonds excrete during the arc where Stephen comes to homeworld after being revealed to be pink. The implication was the missing resource was Pink's fluid, meaning all abilities inherited from Pink, like shape-shifting are not present in Gems made after she faked her death.
I'm going to take a wild guess on the majority of season one stuff being much like Adventure Time, stuff that doesn't fit into what the show became later. Sometimes you don't go in knowing what everything will be in the end when you write a story. Some of those earlier episodes might well have ended up contradicting where the story went later on, such as the moon goddess, or the temple. Or in other words, they are unresolveable plot threads.

To me, the gems were originally implied to be more religious or spiritual beings in Season 1 rather than aliens, which is why the gem related things from Season 1 like the Moon Goddess and the temple murals are more “mystical” than technological. Honestly I would’ve preferred if the writers took this route with the gems instead of generic aliens.

I thought the recourse shortage was made pretty obvious in the Diamond Days arc. All four diamonds used to hang out in the "extraction room" we see Blue using, where some of their essence was extracted for use in gem making (we see this work when steven creates a pebble). Since Pinks "shattering", they have obviously lost her as a source of essence and had to rely on what they had stockpiled. Due to White no leaving her head, they were likely down to just Blue and Yellow for gem making.

We do know from Buddy's book that we've probably visited Russia before, since Pearl marked it as one of the dangerous places to go and Garnet convinced him to go to each location and we saw that he ended up at the various gem locations they went to in the earlier seasons, and any new (to the audience/steven) locations he went to were later revealed to be in places other than Russia. As far as I know though, it wasn't revealed which gem structure is there. I suspect the Lunar spire, but the floating rocks and beetle gems' home are probably a fair guess too

  • @SaiScribbles
    @SaiScribbles Před 3 lety +2

Once we're shown Yellow and Blue's extraction chambers I think it's pretty clear "lack of resources" means they can't make Gems like they used to without Pink. Clearly some essence from the Diamonds is used to create them. As for stuff like the Cluster and the forced fusions, I feel like they were trying to find ways to make shattered Gems useful again.
On another note: I've come to accept that many things in season 1 are just MacGuffins that don't have any real backstory.
I also never really want to find out who "created" the Gems, if anyone. The Diamonds could have come to be through some cosmic means, since they're basically gods, and then Gems are a subspecies they created.

It seems like the writing team didn't have a 100% clear idea of where they were going during the first half of season 1. There's a lot of genuine mysticism, arcana, and time travel that just doesn't mesh with "alien rocks from space" stuff they started feeding us later on. This was a supernatural show at first, but it became a sci-fi show right around the time they introduced Lapis.

I honestly wondered two things in regards to fusion that were left unanswered. 1. Does Lapis ever get the confidence to fuse again? Seeing as how she was in a toxic fusion for so long, leaving her with that bad taste In her mouth, it just seems odd to leave it that way with her not knowing how a good fusion feels. 2. Could Peridot fuse? Though they said that resources were lacking on homeworld, I feel like she still could do it, even without her shape shifting ability. They already showed that she had the metal telekinesis, so I wonder if it was possible for her to still fuse. Just a few of my questions.
