    PlayList of all my 3D Printing Video's: goo.gl/FKD0Tq
    I bought an XBOX 360 Kinect camera for $10 on Craigslist and was able to scan myself in high detail, then printed the 3D model off on my 3D printer. I couldn't be happier with how it turned out. This is the best thing i have printed yet.
    In this video i try to go step-by-step with how you can do the same thing. From buying the camera, downloading the drivers and software, how to scan and use the program, cleanup and print.
    Make sure you download the KinectSDK Drivers. www.microsoft.com/en-us/downl...
    I used Skanect to do the scanning, instead of ReconstructMe. skanect.occipital.com/
    I used Sculptris to fix any holes in the scanned 3D model. pixologic.com/sculptris/
    Then printed it off with my MP Select Mini 3D printer.

    I used the Skanect free version but I found that the STL export had a very visible mesh. I bought a PRO license and found that an export with 50,000 polygons in PRO results in a much better quality.
    Export the object size in millimeters gives an accurate object size in mm usable to create duplicates with a fair match to the original.

    very informative, Dave. You could have eliminated the need for using Scruptress to fill in the holes if you had done a more thorough job of scanning yourself, moving the scanner vertically to cover under the chin and on top of the head.

    I was just browsing the web to find out if Skanect works for my type of scanning (on a rotary table) and found this video.
    This is a very nice and detailed video and worth watching all 27 minutes!
    I just ordered a used Kinect 360 for 20 EUR so I will see in a few days if this works 😀

    • @Rob_65
      @Rob_65 Před 6 lety

      YES! It took me a bit more than 27 minutes to install all software and make my first scan but with this video this was an easy job 👍
      It will take me a few scans, hours or days to find the best scan quality but this is very promising.

    • @1blisslife
      @1blisslife Před 6 lety

      rumblfmp How did the scanning process work for you after all?

    • @Rob_65
      @Rob_65 Před 6 lety

      See my reaction below. It may take a few tries to get a good scan but this is still fairly easy to do. I also tested an Occipital Structure sensor with Skanect. That one works faster, has less errors (so less scans before a good quality scan is made) but it is also way more expensive.
      For the occasional scan-for-fun use nothing beats the Kinect.

      i think you can adjust the size in whatever slicer program you are using. it shouldn't matter what it's scanned as, just adjust the size on the slicer print bed and it will be the actual part size.

      @@DaveWirth im just wondering if i can make replicas/copy of the 3d scan and print it exactly like the original one. for example, a plastic from my motorcycle, that is not in good shape, but scanning it and print it again in abs might be a good solution. possible?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  Před 4 lety

      @@xnetcascais Possibly. The scan with the Kinect isn't perfect. Especially with shiny parts. It should give your a 3D model of the right shape. But you might have to edit it a little and clean it up. Another option is Photogrammetry. See these good video's by Prusa:
      czcams.com/video/ye-C-OOFsX8/video.html
      czcams.com/video/1D0EhSi-vvc/video.html EDIT: The 2nd video is a more updated version. And again, photogrammetry is great for things like rocks, where there is a speckled pattern. But not good for smooth things with a constant color. So it wouldn't work on a flat table. Or wouldn't work well for a shiny car mirror. It needs different patterns to connect the images. And like the video said, outside on a cloudy day is good, with no shadows.
      I've seen people try to scan something shiny, fail, then spray paint it with a speckled pattern and it worked.
      2nd EDIT:
      Don't scan it on a table. Put something down over it that has a pattern. Like you can see in the video that they put the part on a box with a picture, but the smooth table below was all bumpy.

    should i use processing on mac? or what are the mac alternatives?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  Před 5 lety

      Not sure, never owned a mac. But it should work as long as it's a somewhat powerful computer that can do the processing.

    Would be nice to make a real size model for parents memories and make it a business. What do you think about it?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  Před 6 lety

      Ya I think there are companies based on that. But they have a bunch of cameras set up and take the image instantly. The kinect is a cheaper approach, and more difficult to get a kid to sit still for 2 minutes while you scan them.

    Hi Dave! I just got my Kinect scanner. Any Idea where i can get the driver for windows 10?

    • @ToluFunnel
      @ToluFunnel Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you Dave for the link. My problem has been solved. I had to uninstall Kinect SDK version 2.0 and install version 1.8 before it worked properly. Then I searched for the drivers online again and it worked.

      I think I might just need some help. The drivers have been installed however when I plug in the scanner it just keeps on blinking a green light but doesn't show on the Skanect that it's been connected with my laptop. Please help me 🙏

    I see model numbers 1414 and 1473 and they look the same . So which one is version 1 ?

    • @DaveWirth
      @DaveWirth  Před 6 lety +1

      I did a quick google search for those 2 models, and they both look like version 1. Version 2 is the more square design.

    Free Skanect only gives 5000 faces on STL. Way to rugged for use imo.
