- 3D Scanning with XBox 360 Kinect and Skanect
In this video, I am testing how to 3D scan with the Kinect for XBox 360 sensor. The software being used is Skanect from Ocipital. Have fun watching and share your thoughts in the comment section!

I have had everything needed to do this for years. Finally getting around to experimenting with it. Thanks for making the video. Everything else I found was 2012 or earlier.
Same. Kinects now $10 wherever you find them lol
Tip: While you are trying to scan a small object, make the bounding box smaller and use a smaller table. When the table is much bigger than the object, SKANECT thinks that the table is the subject.
And when you use a perfectly sized table, you can get closer to the object while staying at the sweet spot of SKANECT.
Another great vid, I can appreciate the time it takes to purchase the equipment download software and learn to use it before you would even start filming. Great work
Gary Toth, great comment! Thanks for being part of the community!
Grabbing some popcorn and ready to watch.
Great to read you liked it! If you have ideas for other topics I should cover, just ask me to make a video about it.
Helps if you use a 3D scanning spray, especially on reflective items.
Nice one Daniel !!
Thanks Steeve Rioux!

Thanks kckhunter1!
so much helpful information, thank you
You are so welcome!
i recently stumbled across something called Nyko Zoom which is a lenses for the kinect that reduces the range by 40% so that people with small rooms could use the kinect im going to give it a go and hopefully it should allow me to get closer to smaller objects although not too small without it complaining
So.. did it work?
@@mattcg149 yes it did and i was right you still cant go all that small but it is better, i moved on from it after having great results with photogrammetry tho
@@EpIcHoBoGuY What software have you tried for photogrammetry?
excelent
Thank you!
Thank you. In general it's best for your viewers if you're actually using software that shows capture at its best, not worst. I also appreciate that not all youtubers are well sponsored enough to have affordable access to tools. Some reviewers make a point of being self/crowd funded so they can avoid sponsor entanglements. I appreciate the video, I have subscribed.
you can dip the wine glass in something like wax, paint, or anything that can be melted into liquid and cooled into a solid.
Would setting the object on a turntable or lazy susan work?
nice, what is the precision of this method? suppose we have scanned a well-polished 10 cm sphere, how different will be a surface 3D model? -/+ 0.1mm ? 0.5mm? 1cm ?
Hi how much light do you need for it to pick up the scan please
i have a problem is:: not gpu aceleration not available error ?? help me
i am looking for driver that work for webcam kinect xbox360 any idea where to get 1 please help
129 is not too bad of a price. There are people who pay a lot more than that just for their scanners. I know that 3D scanning can be really expensive.
the page for the driver doesn't show it supports windows 10, is there one I can get for windows 10 or is it even required then?
Hi. I'm balancing buying a second hand kinect xbox360 to use as scanner. I basically need to scan rough geometry of wings for models so I do not need detailed scanning and I would go for the free version of the sw, but I have 3 doubts I hope you can help me with
1) object dimension won't be proportional one to each other... let's say 1500x400x50 mm...would it be a problem?
2) surface to be scanned is carbon fiber (any experience scanning this materials?)
3) I would get a spheric 360 scan. Is it possible to flip the object during the scanning process, either I have to do two scans to be marged with a cad sw?
Thanks in advance for your support and congratulations for the tutorial.. very well done
Hi Daniel how to connect 360 Kinect to Mac so it can be read by the skanect
Hey, i have a question if you know.
I bought a kinect instaled everything but when i want to scan something the product is doubled, like double vision.
I have my hand raised and sees it double,
like 2 hands displaced from one another.
Could the sensor be defective or is there some setting i don't know to use?
Which one works better for scanning--xbox one or 360?
I have a old 360 Kinect and I’m wanting to try 3-D scanning, would you still recommend the software and method?
You say the downloads are in the description, but I cannot find them
hello do you know if the scales can be done 1 to1?
Do you have video for scanning human full body?
Can I use this to scan myself?
hello! can you please help me out? how would i get this to work on a mac laptop? is there a driver i need for the kinect to talk to the mac? or any third party software that would connect the kinect with mac? thank you!
After doing some scans with the Xbox one Kinect and being disappointed, I borrowed my brothers 360 Kinect and Skanect wont detect it. T^T
Still works 2023
Love this video.
Question: using the 360 sensor. Do you know if the sensor can be stationary and rotate object for scanning?
I am going to show this soon. It requires some preparation of the objects background to be equally colored as far as I can say for now.
That’s a preferred way to do it, especially with people with unstable hands.
@@Crosslink3D is there anything similar to the kinect with a better sensor?
hi
i install all software but I cant scan because Skanect show me sensor unavailable ? what should I do to fix it ?
i have two drivers in my system device manager
Kinect for Windows Camera
Kinect for Windows Device
please help me?
I don’t know if it’s my lighting or shakey hands but I get crappy results and lost tracking. I want to be able to scan knives too and they can have reflective surfaces. Not sure what to do about that
get some plasti dip spray and make sure you give it a good few coats to give it a thick coating and scan after you should be able to just peal off the plasti dip just make sure you have a good thick coating otherwise it wont peal easy and you will have to scrub it
Too much lighting is not good for Kinect. It sees projected IR dots better at dark. (I mean, you don't want to put 4 lights around the model. 2 would be enough.)
I have some problems installing:
I installed Skanect
I installed Sdk 1.8
Linked to USB
Run Skanect
Unfortunately ... "sensor unavailable" (the green link on the xbox360 is blinking)
I have a Win 64bit i7 notebook with Geforce 920M.
How to solve? Thanks in advance.
But which is better 360 or the Other newer Version
I think 360's kinect is better at shape but one's sensor is better at colors.
@Crosslink what processor and graphic card do you use for scanect?
I consider buying kinect but i only have a old nvidia gpu. (GT640)
I think by today you shouldn’t buy a Kinect anymore. Think of other solutions that are better and cheaper like photogrammetry.
@@Crosslink3D Can you recommend any alternatives? I love the idea of portable 3D scanning.
Well, Kinect was never really „portable“. You could look into Display.land app.
@@Crosslink3D display.land is no longer available from august 2020
Is it just me or does skanect only support the "structure" scanner now? For those of you that purchased the pro version, did you lose kinect v1 support?
False alarm, more googling got me the answer, Skanect only recogized the kinect in a USB 2.0 port?! Sounded crazy, but it worked even though Skanect does not list the kinect as supported anymore.
So what is the verdict? Should I buy an Xbox One or 360 Kinect? Cheers mate!
I have the same question
Same!
did any of yall get one
I thought the Kinect for Xbox One had significantly better resolution than the one for 360
I'm having troubles, not sure if its lighting or what
What exactly is going wrong?
In other words, it's not ideal for small or transparent objects since it uses infrared to scan everything.
That’s right!
@@Crosslink3D whats good for small objects then?
Hai Dany.... In this Kinect device we can scan Foot images ?
What are you trying to achieve?
@@Crosslink3D I'm looking for a Customized insole for Foot Arch
I dont know why but suddenly it stoped recognizing mi kinect and now i cant scan :( anybody has any suggestions?
fixed it by removing the 1.8SKD and using the 1.6v of the SKD drivers (will actually work in windows 10)
Hi really like your videos, but sometimes they are too superficial, buy this I mean, which version of windows are you using, because it's well known that kinect 360 normally it's not easy to setup on windows 10, if possible!
I have windows 10 and I followed the steps and had no issue connecting.
@@jaygmanz Ditto.
i mean it didnt works with Windows 10
So use a Windows 7 virtual machine I guess?
Skanect's Github repo hasn't been updated in years, and I'm wondering if someone can recommend a similar software product supporting the XBox 360 Kinect or another quality, affordable 3D scanner. Also, Skanect's website states that only OpenNI 2.2.0.33 Beta is supported, and I prefer using production-ready software as Beta may not be good enough.
Trust me, It is working good and stable.
But you can always use Artec Studio instead.
@@timberlock is it still working? as is kinect good resolution or is there anything similar
@@JJ-vp3bd Skanect is good. But as I said, you can use Artec Studio or RecontructMe.
@@timberlock is there any modern webcams i could use with RecontructMe? Just looking to save cost and I heard Kinect V2 cant get close enough for miniature detail
But it is pretty expensive. If you don't want to spend money, stick with photogrammetry. Photogrammetry has endless opportunities. You just need to be patient.
looks like Skanect is an abandoned project :(
ok boomer
Not really
bad video, explanation lacking on kinect part, too much time on skanect when it costs an eye.
