      Oh my goodness! THANK YOU! You are too kind! This road trip was an epic one in our book. A little outside our usual American Southwest content but I think that's why it was so epic for us. Stick around, we still have a couple of videos left before we reach the end! Thank you again! 😊🙌

    I grew up at Lake Tahoe on the Placer County side. I moved away in 1997. I miss it greatly. After traveling around the world, I can tell you there is nothing like Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Tahoe literally has over 2,000 miles of interconnecting trails crossing many remote cascade lakes and rivers, 40 ski resorts of all type. Watch Scott Fitzgerald channel for more on the Northern and central Sierra range. Thanks for bringing me on your trip and giving me serious nostalgia.

      That area truly fascinates us and we love it more and more each time we explore there. Will check out Scott's channel. Thanks for the recommendation! 👍

      Oh my goodness! Thank you so much! So not necessary, but SO appreciated. 😊 We will definitely add that book to our list. A lot of these stories we want to dive deeper into one day and recommended books always are welcome. And trails that close? No wonder it rated so highly! OK, Reno. We see you. 😅

    Drove through the Donner Pass several years ago, heading east to Vermont. The Interstate follows the California/Oregon Trails and if you have a sense of history, the hardships of those early pioneers crossing the the land is sobering.Just the topography alone is enough to open one's eyes. Imagine being in a ox drawn wagon or even walking.Then add in disease, weather, food or lack thereof, bandits, hostile Indians, wild animals and a dozen other hazards. Our ancestors are to be admired for their fortitude.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci

      For sure. They didn't have a McDonalds to stop at. Instead had to stop, exert energy and hunt or fish for food, sometimes coming up empty handed, and pick up and continue along with empty bellies until the next opportunity arises. I can't even imagine...

    Gorgeous views! I've spent most of my time around the Nevada portion of Lake Tahoe, but I'm sure it's stunning from everywhere! Can't wait to see the rest!

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci +1

      We still need to check out the Nevada side. We had plans to drive around the lake and kayak but time and a few mishaps involving camping sort of ate up some time that was meant to be spent on other things. 😔

    I’ve been through that whole area many times when I was a Ca resident, absolutely gorgeous! I even took a steamboat cruise around Lake Tahoe! 😎 Excellent interpretive and educational video.

      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Oh neat! That's one thing I think would be fun to do is take a steamboat cruise on the lake. Did a few on the Mississippi River as a kid around St Louis, but I mean... not quite as scenic. 😂

    Glenn, another masterpiece video. Loved it. The blue bird was a stellar jay very common in higher elevations. We have them here in Colorado. Saw a bald eagle today on a tree top on my way to Grand Junction. They are special to see. I had heard the story of Donners and so sad for them. Lake Tahoe, I have never seen and now would like to take a trip there. You give me very good ideas of places to see and experience. Emerald Bay just gorgeous. Thanks to you and Amy for your hard work.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci

      Oh, thank you so much! We were actually watching this video yesterday and once again Glenn was wondering about the identity of that blue bird. Now we know! Yeah, Lake Tahoe is definitely on our list of places to go back (then again, many places are). 😂

    Great video as always, Glenn and Amy! If you’re interested in reading more about the Donner Party, try “The Indifferent Stars Above: The Harrowing Saga of the Donner Party” by Daniel James Brown…it’s excellent and adds interesting context to the history provided at Donner Memorial State Park.
    Glenn asked if there is more to Reno than gambling-apparently yes, as Outside magazine named it one of the “15 Happiest Places to Live in the U.S.” and 76% of the population lives within ten minutes of a park or trail system. 😊

    Yay! You're in my camping vacation area here in mountainous Northern California. And it's a huge area. I know you filmed this last September.
    If you bought an Benchmark Atlas of California you would be able to not drive so far outta your way for things like cafe's or groceries. Good old fashioned road map helps tremendously. I have an Arizona volume and am discovering your fine state each winter and spring. No internet needed.
    Bet you're heading down the Hwy 395 next video. Another of my favs. Thanks again for taking me along.
    PS , I was in the same spots you were in this video, in September 2023 too! Could've hiked right past each other. 😅

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci

      Haha! Yup... down 395 for a bit after the Tahoe area. 😉 I think each of us had atlases ages ago in the past. Probably should pick some up again. They came in handy in those days.

    It's amazing how trails scratched out ~175 years ago by Donners et al, are now highways going to McDonald's even. (I guess some things never change?) The sheer number of highways, roads, dirt roads, and trails in CA alone makes me wonder how people did anything BUT build roads up 'til now.

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci

      Oh, no joke! Ever since we started this channel I can't help but visualize major highways as old wagon routes or train tracks that are no longer really there. Same with the canals here in Arizona. I can't help but wonder what the Donner party would think of that McDonald's now though. 😅

  • @SidetrackAdventures
    @SidetrackAdventures Před 5 měsíci +1

    That entire area looks so amazing. My sister in law got married at Lake Tahoe a few years ago, and that was the first time I'd been and I was really kicking myself for not checking it out earlier. Did you see the Donner Party Picnic Area sign?

    • @CactusAtlas
      @CactusAtlas  Před 5 měsíci

      Sadly, if Glenn saw the sign, he didn't film it. There was a lot of strange irony about food in that area that didn't make it into the video though. 😅

    When two indians guides sensed they were on the menu, they took off, only to be tracked down. They were the seen a the most disposable. And they were.
