My theory: the mine is releasing lead into the water sources, causing the town folk and all animals exposed to it to hallucinate. The show is very intentional about showing the characters brushing their teeth with tap water, followed by a creepy hallucination immediately after. Even the lady who starts seeing the ghost is exposed to the wolf blood stream (assuming it’s drinking from the same water sources) right before she starts following the ghost that reveals the bodies. I think the hallucinations will become worse as the season continues until they figure it out they’ve been drinking lead water.

There is some toxin leaking into drinking water so affected caribou to jump off the cliff scientists to lose their mind and run out naked to freeze to death. It could be like in that show Fortitude where the mining crew accidently unearthed thousand year old frozen mammoth and it thawed and released a virus into the town and animals and people start going crazy. Brilliant show btw. This could be same idea and mega evil mining corp could be covering it up.

I have been desperate to learn more about that whole evil Yellow King/Lovecraftian cult that Errol Childress was apart of ever since I watched season 1. After all, Rust famously said in the hospital that ‘we didn’t get them all.’ The thought of further exploration of ‘them’ and they’re beliefs fascinates me

However, we have to keep in mind that the pilot begins with a quote from the Yellow King story series. I also think Rust's father was named Travis, similar to 'the ghost' Rose thinks she sees.

Alaska is hella dark in the winter no sun, so people are bound to "see things" I'm not mad about the visions. People already complaining that it's "too supernatural" lol. The mind can play tricks on people that go six months without sunlight. So the "supernatural stuff" could be a result of seasonal depression or some coast to coast vibes. Either way it sets a creepy tone, which is exactly what the first season did. Especially when Rust was tripping on the Yellow King visions, which could have been premonitions or just drug flashbacks, or both. Season 1 left that decision up to the audience.

Anyone else think the reindeer had a reaction to something they smelled which terrified them? Could be biological (something to do the research station or the mining operation)? There’s definitely a murder cover up situation going on. It was interesting that Liz didn’t trust officer Hank and made his son bring her over the files from the previous murder. The magnetic field theory is interesting. Glad I waited to watch this until after the episode! I didn’t realize how many clues I missed. It makes me excited for more.

The one detail that REALLY stood out to me is the use of a very specific shade of blue. The color blue that Hank is painting the room in his house for his Russian mail order bride is extremely similar to the shade of blue on the floor of the science facility.
That shade of blue is also the same color of Navvaro’s jacket and there are hints of that shade of blue throughout the episode. Seems very intentional.
Sounds tin foil hat, but it reminds me of the detail from S1 of the specific color of the house being painted tying to Childress’ painting business and painting the house of the Fontenot family prior to the abduction of Marie Fontenot.
Also- just noticed that Navarro’s sister has her hair dyed a similar shade of blue as well.
It’s also the same shade of blue that Hank has for the keyboard on his phone when he is texting his mail order bride and the color of the hockey helmets.
I know blue is a super common color but this has to be intentional in some way to draw our attention to it.

My only quibble, so far: In this episode we’re cautioned the water has been tainted/undrinkable for three days yet we see Jody Foster washing dishes and making soup - one assumes with water as an ingredient - without care. And, wouldn’t you expect to see cases and cases of bottled water stockpiled next to the mountains of canned goods and toilet paper? Lastly, is it SOP for cops to have boxes of case records in their homes?
