Jodie’s detective work this level was cool to see. She might be the most true detective yet beside rust and Marty. Also lots of imagery in this episode and thematic callbacks to season one and 3 with the one eyed characters. I feel like the hockey skates are low key part of the evidence. Even if they were used as a murder weapon yet could be reaching. if whatever was covered up and that will turn out to be an inadvertently innocent piece of the puzzle that will tie all the threads together.

Also, when Danvers touches Pete's bruise on his cheek, she says "it's funny, a league hockey champion falling on his face in the ice rink". This was right after she told him the story of the abused girl who went along with the lie (that she fell down the stairs) in order to protect her abuser. And Pete looks down ashamed. I think its pretty obvious this is the case. The show intentionally showing the photos of dead indigenous woman right after she tells Leah to wipe her face from the marks to show the audience she fears thats what will happen to her. Also i think the "she" they woke up is reference to the actual polar bear which is an incarnation of some ancient spirit of nature (in this show it might be the microorganism), similar to plotlines like "The Terror".

Hank is the diminutive/nickname of the name Henry. Liz may listen to white noise as a mind-focusing tool while reviewing evidence. The drawing Darwin made is based on his grandmother’s native fairy tales of an Inuit goddess whom in human life rode in a kayak with her parents. A storm suddenly came and the parents believed that she had caused it and they threw her overboard hoping to drown her as a witch or demon. The severed fingers in the drawing are from her parents chopping at her hands while she tried to climb back into the kayak. Legend states that her chopped up fingers became sea creatures and she became a sea goddess who could bring forth famine (the caribou bolting to their deaths before the hunter could bag one as food; the crab shortage; etc.). Perhaps this goddess of the sea & ice has been awakened.

I have tinnitus and I can't be in total silence. If I'm in a quiet room for just a few seconds, I start to go nuts. I need some kind of noise, even if it's white noise, at all times. There was some speculation about Liz having hearing loss from something that was said in the first episode. I didn't agree with the theory then, but now maybe I do. My mom is in her 70s and her hearing isn't great but I know that she also has deafening tinnitus. Actually, my brother has it pretty bad too, so I guess it runs in the family.
I think they're trying to drive home that she's old. LOL Even though Jodie Foster looks incredible and I definitely would not call her "old," Danvers has issues with her vision and her hearing and I think they're trying to remind the viewer that she's aging and it may be affecting her job.

The color blue used goes back to Phoenicia. It was harvested from a seashell and used mostly by royalty (royal blue and purple) because it was expensive. It is highly symbolic of royalty and blue bloods. This could tie in with the use of the Beatles, Twist and Shout. The Beatles were straight out of Tavistock Institute funded by the royals to socially engineer society and then of course take a look at the Beatle's album cover, Her Satanic Majesty's Request. There are a lot of subtleties in this series that speak to us and reveal so much truth.

My guess is that Navarro is going to say something like, "I saw a vision of your son and he said...." and Danvers is going to say, "How could you know that?" It makes sense since Danvers is a skeptic but Navarro had this vision and whatever she learned must be valuable information. even the interaction between them including young prior is hilarious and interesting to watch unfold.
though i still can't tell exactly what direction this show is going for. the supernatural elements aren't presented as mere hallucinations or the result of grief as even navarro saw danver's dead son. but then again otoh, danvers is being used to tell the audience that there is a rational explanation to everything happening and it's not "magic" 😹

I wrote on the epi 2 breakdown post about how Inuit cultures believe polar bears are very intelligent or men that can transform and shed their bear skin and return home a human.
Is Tagaq, the hunter-nomad, the polar bear?
is Danvers’ son the polar bear because he holds one? (Is it a coincidence the police patch of a polar bear looks like a kid’s face with a damaged eye?)
Is the Inuit woman with the eye patch the bear?
Or is the bear just a spiritual guide/omen?
When Rose says the symbol is very old I am reminded of Rust in season 1 said light versus dark is the oldest story.
The spiritual aspect I suspect is Sedna (marine life dying, caribou eluding hunter, monster drawing etc)awakening and coming, for revenge, or “The Dark”, while the grounded answers are the mine. “She came for us in the dark”
“I found it, its here” Annie says in her video. Were the indigenous people looking for an ancient artifact(Sedna related?) or a way to sabotage the mine? Annie was already excited about the Tsalal location. The fact she doesn’t mention what she found says she’s making the video for someone who already knows they’re looking for something.
I think Navarro shot Wheeler like Marty shot the perp in season 1. Danvers is covering for her just like Rust. She thinks Navarro gets too passionate about the cases where women are abused, like her mom was, so that possibly explains why she doesn’t want her as a liability. (Danvers herself obviously crosses the letter of the law too). But it could also be that Navarro had a vision at the crime scene as well, which Danvers obviously doesn’t take too kindly to and makes fun of her for now. Doesn’t a trailer show the Wheeler victim getting up and pointing too?
I have to watch again for more, or to flesh these out 😅

Is Sedna the name of the monster the kid drew in the first episode? Glad someone else noticed the eyepatch woman.

The whistling is the Beatles song from the first episode and her memory with her child. It says it in the subtitles when watching it with the captions option.

The only thing that's bothering me is that picture the little kid drew. Is that the "she" the scientists were referring to?

@ThinkStory, so I never write comments but thoroughly enjoying your True Detective recaps and theories. That said, I came across a documentary I watched yesterday and was blown away at the similarities to this season and highly recommend you watch it as there are significant ties to an incident in Russia (Dyatlov Pass incident) and in the US National Park… Vanished on Hulu from 2019. Would love to hear your thoughts and connections to this seasons True Detective! Keep up the great work and hope I was able to help
