"It is both grounded and otherworldly" perfect explanation of one of the main reasons why true detective is a masterpiece and is so fascinating
a grounded story with a sprinkle of cosmic horror that'll stick to the back of your mind throughout.
The layers really got me. It would have still been a great southern gothic detective show but adding the yellow king and carcossa really put it next level for me. I've dabbled in Lovecraft but found myself googling down a rabbit hole about the yellow king after finishing the series.
Yes, it involves reality, Lovecraftian horror, old school detective work, and friendship. Incredible

This is, essentially, Freud's description of the uncanny.
At the beginning of the show Rust says that after someone dies they have a look in their eyes. A look that showes that they gave up and quit pretending that the world really meant anything. But at the end of the show he tells Marty that as he was on deaths door he felt the love of everyone that mattered to him and he chose to let go. Thats the look he saw in all those people's eyes. The look of finding peace that he finally understands.

He is a man who lost his child. Anyone who’s experience that is damaged, and struggles to cope with the biggest loss humans experience, as well as his own self, what he does, and how that colors his world view and everyone in it.
Man, that episode with the motorcycle gang and the trap house shootout. Insane. The most engaging action I’ve seen on film. Best episode

I love how he pricks his arm to make it look like he has track marks in order to look like a junky, a great detail which adds so much to how good he is at undercover work.

I’m guessing you’re referring to the fact the jacket covers his arms anyway, so what would be the point?
I suppose he’s just covering his bases, should the jacket come off at some point.
Also though, being a good undercover is similar to being a great actor, you’ve gotta live and breathe the role, be deep into the mindset.
That way everything becomes second nature and there’s no “acting” involved, you’re just going off of instinct., everything is second nature and you don’t raise any suspicion with the people you’re emulating.
I can't even explain how special season 1 is to me . Its truly lightning in a bottle. I doubt I'll ever see something this good on TV again in my life.

'grow up' you have no clue whatsoever about the depths of darkness, this show nor it's characters don't touch the surface either. Oh no, an arrogant alienated slightly above average thinker judges everything so harshly like a teenage emo and it's SO PROFOUND when he realizes he was an idiot.
When Marty shot Reggie Ledoux, Rust said to Marty, “It’s good to see you finally commit to something.” Rust is aware that Marty likes to think of himself as a good family man, but he can’t really commit to it, which leads to a lot of the chaos in Marty’s personal life.
I loved the Season Three line. "I am glad it was you that hit me and not the woolly mammoth you are fucking."

Yeah, I think Marty's wife said it so well. "Rust knew exactly who he was. Marty's problem was he didn't know himself so he never knew what to want."
27:36 An important detail here is it's Marty who cracks the case! That's why Rust says "Fuck you, man." Shows Marty is a true detective after all, and reaffirms that they need each other.
Its even better on repeat viewing because one of them (Rust i think) says very early on that its often a tiny detail that breaks a case. It also worth pointing out that the opening tune is one of the few TV show openings that i always watch in full every time, the tune is just so good. One of the other is true Blood, the show is nonsense...but those opening credits are great. There is probably a video for someone in discussing the greatest opening credits/tunes for tv shows. No1 is obviously True Detective.
Edit, more thoughts rather than make extra comments. I have watched the series A LOT. At least once a year since it came out. I love it, and there is quite often another detail missed.
At 10:30 (ish) the comment is made that Rust is more talkative "now". This is is true in part because he is now very much driven to rectify his mistakes because he knows whats going on more than "we" or the police do. But, more importantly, he is actually interogating them. He has them in the palm of his hand, Marty spells this out to them later.
@@jamesmaybrick2001 Nice, I hadn't put those two together. It's such tight writing, man. I agree Rust's expansive persona during the interrogation is his way of playing the interrogators, but I also remember Nic Pizzalotto saying some like, "In those scenes with Rust describing pessimism, who's he even talking to?" I always took that to mean that Rust is arguing with himself, because he's in no way a nihilist. He wants to believe, and he sees meaning everywhere, culminating by the end in what you'd have to call a religious experience (hallucination, death, rebirth, hard won optimism).
Another one that made me laugh was after Marty gives the underage girl some money to stop working as a prostitute, Rust says something like 'what was that, a down payment?'. Sure enough, Marty ends up with her like 2 eps later.
This links to Maggie's comment in an episode about how Marty used to be a great detective. He believes that to be a good detective he needed to separate from his family and decompress, but this was his downfall. Only once he was on his own and spent more time focusing on the case itself we saw Marty's 'True Detective' self come out: when he followed Tyrone Weems, when he linked the green to the paint, and when he followed the lead on the painting company's taxes. The same can be said for Rust when for the entire series he is nihilistic and sees darkness all the time, and only in the final words he says he sees lightness and we feel a sense of optimism, perhaps the man he once was.
They cracked the case after Marty connected green ears with a freshly painted house from their 1995 canvassing. That was the point we realized both Marty and Rust were true detectives.
As long as I live, I'll never forget Marty's last words to Rust: "In this world, there are far too many false detectives. But you, Rust, you are a true detective."

The movie “Prisoners” (2013) feels like a season of True Detective, Jake Gyllenhaal’s Detective Loki being the main protagonist.
Prisoners is one of my all time favourite movies it’s incredible and Loki is a great character.
As a True Detective S1 fan I watched Prisoners for the first time the other day because of your comment. It was really good.

Little stuff like that that often goes unnoticed really helps give a movie/show authenticity. I appreciated the fact in Moneyball that everyone was doing dip.
As someone from the deep south, this show did a wonderful job at capturing some feelings you can get down here. Worn down buildings mingled with nature as it reclaims and the foundries pumping plumes of smoke into the air in the background. Religious iconography every where. It's got a charm to it.

This was probably the best season of any television series ever. The whole episode in the projects that was like one long shot was incredible.

By episode 2, i told my wife that Mathew McConaughey was going to win the Emmy for best male actor in a series. He was nominated by he lost too Brian Cranston. Rust Cole is one of the greatest characters in television history bar none.

@charleyshack I'm a huge Breaking Bad fan. That year was a great season, and the show had a sweep at the Emmy's. They won everything. Bryan deserved to be there, but Matthew's character should have won.

@@tjohnson9687I love Breaking Bad, but Cranston won that award so many times. Matthew basically never does television roles, wasn’t coming back for another season and the one season of True Detective he did do was every bit as good as Cranston’s White and more unique because he didn’t do the same character for four other seasons. I mean no disrespect to Cranston, I think he’s great and has been for years, ever since I first saw him on X Files, but Matt deserves the Emmy for this one season of brilliant small screen character work.
Rust gets the glory because of his depth, but Woody absolutely murders his role too. I love the “You know what it’s like being YOUR partner?” - he kept Rust grounded
On top of the great storytelling and performances, the musical score by T. Bone Burnett is so damn good

absolutely agree- it is haunting and buries its way under your skin. musical scores make or break shows and movies, and this one elevated it
I've lost count of how many times I've watched season 1 of True Detective. It's ageless and profound, and stays with you long after you watch the last episode. McConaughey and Harrelson were stand-out performances, but all of the cast turned in an excellent performance.
Finished it this morning. All three though. I couldn't tell you how many times I've watched it. I hate this season one thing though. Yes it can stand alone. But it doesn't. It is all the same story. All three seasons. Look at Lucy in season three. She sells her kid and her kid loses her memory of it all and names her kid after she finds some of her memory from a kind boy who used to know her before she was sold. Season three is easily as good as one. And two as well while i'm sayin it.
Hell, even that chick they saved from Ledoux place, her acting when Rust gave her a visit s top notch!!!

I’ve seen it probably 7 times. Earlier in 2023 I broke my foot and was out of work. Watched it 3 times in a row. Then watched Lost twice in a row

The show ending with Cohle’s extremely optimistic take about “light winning” cemented it as the most satisfying conclusion to any series I have ever watched. For many, I’m sure Cohle is a difficult character to relate to. Or perhaps it’s as easy for many as it is me to attach to him and his ideology. His pessimism and outright dreadful perspective on the universe and life are a dark meditation on existence that I don’t think has been explored so effectively as in this series. All of the awful things he’s seen, enough torment for eternity, and he stumbles away, arm around Marty, reflecting positively for the first time possibly ever with a shot that pans to the cosmos. I’ve always looked to the stars in my life when pondering about anything, and that was something I loved about his character. An eternal sea of blackness stretched over four dimensions expanding infinitely toward an inevitable heat death… and we get to be here to reflect on it for the briefest of moments. If there are any blessings, that is one.

I think the fact that they were partners that liked each other, and were equally competent at the job, was a big plus for me. No contrived conflict between them, no rookie and old hat, just a couple of professionals (albeit totally fucked up)

I think it's more that they respect each other, and are professionals so they know they need to put things aside sometimes and work together. Most of the conflict between them comes when they're not being professional and/or doing a bad job.
I 100% agree. True Detective season 1 is the greatest season of television ever. Breaking Bad is the best complete series but on its merits True Detective wins if you look at season 1 in isolation.

I was ten years younger (and stupider) when Season 1 premiered. Even then this show had a profound effect on me. A few mins into this video I decided to re-watch the season with fresh, educated eyes. And also to look out for the artistry noted in the beginning of this video. I want to say thank you in advance for giving me this gift, and I will return to this video once I re-watch.

This is the false face of the show.
It is actually a study of denial.
The denial of grief (Rust), the denial of guilt (Marty), the denial of evil in the good (the police), the denial of the environment (Maggie and the other civilians).
You see at the end of the season how Marty faces his guilt by crying in gratitude with his family and Rust accepts his grief through that speech about his daughter and neardeath dream.
Brilliant study at that.
@@AleksandarIvanov69 I say you are both right. This transcended television and became true thought provoking art on a whole other level. Two and three continue both those themes nicely I thought. It just piles on the existential questions just one after the other. I am quite exited for season four.
You're not wrong in that it's Nietzschien, but there is a whole lot of Ligotti in there as well. Plagiarism accusations aside, Ligotti's particular philosophies are woven through every scene and line of dialogue (with, of course, Rust as the main mouthpiece).

just in case no one else has said it, Rust’s tattoo is that of a turkey vulture. in many native american traditions, the turkey vulture is a symbol of change, transformation, purification and cleansing.
I have seen the entire 8 episodes close to a thousand times. It is the ultimate tale of good vs evil for the modern human being. For some weird reason, it reminds me of lord of the rings though I cant articulate why. It has the same overall effect on me as lotr.

@nickblack3972 that and they are just two properly written pet projects of good writers/ linguists. I can't say I'm a huge JRR Tolkein fan I've never read the books but I've read about their inception. Him creating a language and only being able to go so far with it before he started having to create back stories and characters to give meaning to the languages. I would be willing to bet Nic Pizzolato had been working and retooling true detectives screen play for years before he even thought of taking it to a producer. Both stories being the pet projects of the writers. So much love and care and devotion and time put in to a story. Re working and rewriting ect ect. We obviously don't have an example for tolekin or at least not that I'm aware of. But when you look at season 2 of true detective you can see what putting time limitations on a writer can amount to. I had to give season 2 a couple more rewatches before I could really appreciate that it's a pretty good story but it pales in comparison to the first season. You can just tell that it was pumped out prematurely and most likely if given more time they more than likely would have put out a better show.
I think there’s a lot more gray areas with the protagonist’s and their morality compared to LOTR. But you did say good v evil in modern times so I can definitely see where you’re coming from as people are complicated and are rarely 100% good or 100% evil.

The intro to this is a work of art. Honestly it could have been a music video if the show had come out in the 90s.
i started looking into who does these opening credits/titles back when i got dawn of the dead 2004 dcdvd and discovered it was the same guy who did se7en. both intros are amazing. since then theres been true detective and the walking dead and many other great opening titles.
Season 1 is so damn good that you can’t even appreciate how fully great it is until you finish it. Cause then it fills in all the little backroads you didn’t know where even there.
Whats so so eery about this show is how it pre dates all the weird sex abuse "conspiracies" that proliferated in the 2010s. The weird spiral.signs in the show are even reflected in real life too. Another scene always creeped me out was the owl overlooking them in the barn a keen symbol in these conspiracies. You wonder if the show tapped into something real... flat circle style... makes it the most disturbing show for me

You're using the term 'conspiracy' wrong. What you mean is that it predated the weird "Conspiracy Theories" of the 2010's. A conspiracy is a very real thing that happens, where two or more people CONSPIRE to achieve a common goal. A conspiracy THEORY is simply that-- a theory that a conspiracy has taken place. For example, to say "911 was an inside job" is not a conspiracy. It is a conspiracy theory. An actual genuine conspiracy can occur in a group of five people.
Persons 1 and 2 conspire to eliminate persons 3 and 4, and lie to person 5 about it. That is a real world conspiracy that could actually happen. If person 5 then said, "Hey, I think it was you who eliminated persons 3 and 4!" That would be a conspiracy theory.
Waaay too many people label all crazy theories as "conspiracies" when that's not at all what that word means.

Good video, but I'd like to clarify one thing: The King in Yellow is NOT a part of the Ctulhu mythos, even if people try to make that connection. "The King in Yellow", the original book, was first published by Robert W. Chambers in 1895, while H.P. Lovecraft, the main author of the Ctulhu mythos, was born in 1890. What really may have happened is that Lovecraft was inspired by Chambers book and writing style.
There's also a nod to Ambrose Bierce, who wrote 'An Inhabitant of Carcosa' in 1886.

It is part of the mythos. In the „Whisperer in Darkness” Hastur is mentioned by name along Cthulhu and Yog-Sothoth. It is, as far as I remember, the only mention in Lovecraft’s writings, but it’s there.
There’s also multiple layers to the Mythos, as you have just the bare-bones of it, only things Lovecraft himself wrote, but then there are things written by some of his friends and fellow writers, as well as later on, people inspired by his work. Further down the line, the expanded mythos contains the works of many more artists who all were inspired by Lovecraft. In this sense, True Detective S1 is in itself part of the extended mythos, as well as being a superb TV adaptation of Lovecraftian spirit, as the show follows a formula that many, if not all of Lovecraft’s stories adhered to: heavy emphasis on research, investigation and mystery in the main body of the story, followed by an intense action sequence at the end of it. In TD those would be the attack on Ledoux compound and then the showdown in Carcosa.
It was part of a trilogy of plays wasn’t it? Beginning with a poem about Carcossa?

Lovecraft didn't have any cohesive mythos, despite what people often hear or read on the internet. He only had few connected or continuous short stories, but the names of his gods are mostly used to namedrop them, but with no overarching intent.

This show is AMAZING. When I first discovered it, the year it came out, it was at night, when I strarted viewing it... I just could not stop watching it until the last chapter. Thant night I did not sleep, I watched the whole 8 hours non stop. Best non sleeping night ever.
Also, as a huge Lovecrat fan, I enjoyed a lot the subtle references to the Providence dreamer.
Best TV series ever in my book.
I've watched Season 1 three times and it never gets old.
i tried watching season 2 immediately turned it off and rewatched season 1, s2 doesnt even hold a candle to season 1. They set the bar way too high in season 1

Flawless pacing great dialogue no non wasted scenes and filler moments. I could watch true detective season 1 anytime anyday, was about to say anywhere but some scenes are nsfw for work lols!

Marty is the reason Rust works so well as a character. Both actors were phenomenal.
It is absolute peak television. The writing, cinematography, atmosphere, music, the casting and acting. Absolutely perfect. And Woody Harrelson is great in this but Matthew McConaughey is on a different level. Honestly I watched the first 10 minutes thinking "I thought Matthew McConaughey was in this" without realising at first I was watching him on screen, he is so different in this masterpiece.
This was one of the finest series that I've ever watched. Truly a profound masterpiece.
I have literally watched this show again and again and again. It's so deep that it never gets old. Episode 7 is my favorite. When they reconcile and work the final stages of the case. It's the most brilliant writing of anything ever created on television..
Thank you for the great commentary, I'm 63 and remember when I first seen this show and how it captivated me it was so intriguing I couldn't wait to see it again, I'm like you this is best mini series I've ever watched there's something about it to this very day that still it wont let me go, especially after looking into it more it was based on true events that really happened in Lousisana by members of the Hosanna church and the Tuttle family who one was the governor and high ranking members of the Louisiana government, They named this series right True Detective time is a flat circle and true evil does exist the fight between light and dark has been going since the beginning of time.
The way ‘True Detective’ conveys a wide range of emotions in just a few episodes, resonating with audiences of any age, is impressive. At 21 I’m as enthralled by the series as someone older. It skillfully balances horrifying and unsettling themes with a nuanced exploration of human nature, oscillating between good and evil.
It captures the full extent of darkness and horror, avoiding excess and the pursuit of shock value, while still delivering its profound narrative impact

Just finished watching it for the first time. I'm amazed, it felt really like a 8 hour movie, as you said. Everything is simply perfect. The acting, the plot, the photography, the music...
I was watching the 4 season as i was captivated by the ideia of a murder in Alaska. But it is so so so bad!
So i decided to see the first season everyone talks about. Damn, the 4 season don't even come close to the first... it shouldn't be a part of the series...
The story, the acting, the filming and that handful of iconic scenes we all remember. True Story season 1 is something unique.
Somehow I am so grateful for it on the other hand I know that I won't see anything this captivating, mysterious, interesting and qualitywise perfect ever again.
The lack of a more easily relatable, "human" character like Hart is a big part of why the later seasons aren't as strong. Even if the character wasn't expertly played the way Woody Harrelson managed to embody the character, it's always good to have a central character who isn't several standard deviations from the mean because of their worldview or brokenness. It provides contrast to a character like Rust. Hart's failings as a character are human failings: impulsiveness, selfishness, infidelity, rationalizing his bad behavior, berserk outrage at injustice to innocents, and so on. Even these qualities make him grounded and approachable in a way that Rust is not.
Precisely. Most people can’t fathom what Rust goes through. And that’s a good thing. But it also means as a writer that you need an Everyman for both the general audiences and for the show itself’s structure to have a foil to the loon.
Season 2 just felt like too many characters for too large a plot. If Season 2 was rewritten as a small team or task force from the beginning and the season was longer, I can see it being a "The Wire" lite and actually working.
Season 3 has near same formula as 1 (2 detectives, smaller case involving a local/regional influence), but like you said, the characters were not as impactful as season 1's.
@@jac1207 I know what you mean. With season two, I was really hoping it would have "The Wire" type task force but go in a pulpy, True Detective direction. Unfortunately, the show went another way.
Nah, Ray Velcoro and Roland West sure were grounded characters, but yeah, Marty s plot really give room for development, wich Ray too have with his convoluted story, but a shame they didnt gave Roland that treatment. Shame the directors of season 2 and 3 couldnt bake the thing pretty, even season 1, for all the superb it is, has a few flaws, wich all the actors and actresses managed to overcome bigtime, but on season 2 and 3 the plot s flaws just watered down the actors great acting. One thing i know for sure is, that true detective s a gold mine if You wanna see top notch acting, no matter how flawed the directing and writing may be, especially after season 1.
I don't know. For me, Roy Velcoro, Wayne Hays, Paul Woodrugh and Roland West were pretty relatable, human characters.
The real horror. The bohemian groove group, who killed Marie, made the spaghetti man,Reggie Ledoux, who are rich an powerful. Tuttle leading them, who is most likely the Yellow king, the real one. The color yellow being on his ascot, tie, the off white of his office walls. It was Tuttle who held the knife in video I believe

The point you made about Rust's tattoo is really interesting - I don't think it's a stretch at all. You're right - he probably got that during his time undercover, which clearly left a mark on him (pun intended). It's subtle, but probably very intentional, that it's covered up at the end, showing that he's finally able to move on and leave that part of him behind. That fits in perfectly with what's going on in that scene and his comment about how he thinks the light is winning.

I love the opening analysis on the opening credits. When I finally sat down to watch the show, and the opening song begins, I paused within 10 seconds. I knew this was going to be special because I had never even heard the song and it was already in my all time top 10. 10 seconds in and I couldn't even watch it. No, I was studying the song, learning the lyrics, really listening.
And the imagery especially of the man throwing his arms up in religious ecstasy, disturbing, and real.
I've watched this show a thousand times and I insist: Marty is the best character. So contradictive, full of wrath, so lost: so humane. Rust is just awesome too, very complex character but sometime times a bit exaggerated, but what I enjoy the most is unfolding the nature of Marty. Marty role is just perfection, Woody is just a legend.
Yeah Woody is incredible and I think he’s overlooked just a little bit in this series cos of how larger than life Rust is, nice to see people appreciate Marty as a character.
I agree. Marty is more relatable , he's every cop in a small town , broken , slightly alcoholic and a bit judgemental.
Rust is much more of a rarity just as an individual. How many atheists who believe humans are evolution's mistake do you know ?
@@somebody7070 Yes! Marty is a great example of the mid-life crisis of a square-minded man in a conservative society. Maggie once says that he doesn't know what he wants and Rust at least knows what he wants and who he is. Delightful lol.
I really appreciate how much minute detail you brought up in the filming of this show. I felt that every scene throughout the 8 episodes were so perfectly thought out. I don't think I will ever see anything like this again.

Excellent analysis! Some incredible details I never thought of. That Fukunaga one shot was epic. I still remember the feeling of being glued to the screen and being blown away, and just after it ended having adrenaline pumping and being wide awake. also I cannot remember where I read it, but it was suggested that Matthew was supposed to play Marty's character originally. Can't even imagine how that would have gone down now!
Never considered the bit about the tattoo being covered at the end. I like it. Nice catch. I've watched this show more times than I can remember and cried way too much while watching. The total isolation both men live in is something I really relate to as well as mistakes made as a parent. Inattention truly is a father's worst sin.
I was struggling with an existential crisis and midlife crisis before watching true detective season 1. This show helped comfort my frantic state and made me realize some hard truths of life which I have now accepted.
Also nice touch with adding the far cry 5 soundtrack in the background, I love that game and it fits true detective so well.
Not even half way through and despite the questionable sound quality this is the best appraisal of this series I’ve watched so far. So possibly the best on CZcams. Nice one mate, I now want to rewatch season one instead of moving on lol

Rust being different after hearing about the Iron Crusaders is because he has already formulated the plan of going back under and needs to be able to handle scenarios with alcohol and drugs again thus he must consume them so that he can handle himself while being high and/or drunk. It's also feasible that it does trigger him to "revert" to his days as an undercover cop.
Me mentions later that he "cleans up nicely" when talking to Ginger, which is ironic, because he did the exact opposite just days before.

1st Season is a Masterpiece, Especially the chemistry between the lead pairing of Woody & Matthew is exceptional and out of this world.
Great work you've done here. It's amongst the best for certain. I always think the best tell is where Maggie tells Rust, very early on in the series, that he should get a pet. In the end, Rust has to find someone to care for and to be cared for too. That someone turns out to be Marty. Some other contenders not necessarily for the 'greatest 8 hours', but for series that are really long movies might be 'Chernobyl' (would love to see your take on that). And here in the UK, way back in the day we had the marvellous Dennis Potter with 'Pennies from Heaven' (Bob Hoskins star-making role) and 'The Singing Detective' (Michael Gambon's star-making role). Also, of course, there's the first series of 'Twin Peaks'. Anyways, this is the first of your work I've seen, and thanks. It's great. New subscriber here. Cheers from the UK.

What the network execs did to Twin Peaks might be the most blatant example of commercial twats murdering art thinking that they can make more money off it’s corpse but ending up with ashes.
If you haven't watched it yet I highly recommend "The Bear". It stars the actor who played Lip in Shameless and he's incredible. There's a rawness and intensity about it that reminds me of TD.
You did a great job. Hard to miss with S1 of True D tho.... What a masterpiece of TV. Quite possible the most perfect show ever made. I will never forget my first watch-through.

Season 1 - that is all I watched. I was ASTOUNDED by how insanely good it was. As a recovering drug-addict, some of it was hard to watch - McOneggy - in the bikers den for example, but I was just blown away.
I was lucky and waited until it was done with the season so that I got to binge-watch it. It took me about 1 day - fugg sleep, fugg work ....... hah, hah.
I am on Holiday in Bangkok for 4++ months - and I am going to watch it again. I have it pulled up and ready to go. It should be FANTASTIC - because I have not seen it for about 8 years. Yee hah.
