    Just an FYI for you. Birds Don't naturally eat figs they are more into the juices in there because they can't find any water. One thing you can do is make sure that there is water for the birds and they will leave your figs alone.

    I think boiling orange peels in hot water and then soaking them for 24 hours in the same water after cooling down to make a spray works the same as Neem oil. Orange peels have an oil that is toxic to aphids, ants, and other pests.

    Back in USSR for scale we did - 1 cap of kerosene + 1 cap soap on 1l of water. Wet plant leave for 5 mins then rinse. You laterally see scales washing away

    Don't allow leaves between plants to touch each other since that's a highway for ants. What I do after pruning for spacing, is dust the soil with coffee grounds out to the drip line. I've found coffee grounds around an ant 'door' in the ground are a good deterrent since ants will build another 'door' to their nest rather than try to pick up a coffee ground to move it. They won't walk over a drip line field of coffee grounds because of the neurological jolt from it. Used coffee grounds do not appreciably affect pH, and if they do, it's a pH in the right direction for most plants. I can't speak for fresh coffee grounds.
    Coffee water became a GO TO pesticide when I saw slugs won't cross a dried coffee water line either. They don't need used coffee grounds. I live next to a wetlands and grow in containers instead of the ground. Spraying coffee water around the lip of the containers I could see in the morning slug trails went up the container, along the drip line without touching it, and then making a U-turn back down the urn to the ground. I spray green peppers with coffee water to deter stink bugs and actually witnessed what happens to them. The stink bug (same color as the green pepper so I almost didn't see it) walked across the coffee water line and had visible tremors from tip to tail. It halted in place, tried to move again, got the same 'jolt', and after another few seconds flew up and away. I had no stink bug problems on any of my green peppers or any pest frequented fruits.

    I lost most of my fig trees this year. I didn't know what happened but one day I happened to notice a bunch of little white bugs under the leaves. I was told to spray them down with dishwashing detergent and water but that still didn't do the trick.

    Hi Thanks a lot for sharing your tips and knowlwdges on fig growing. I have used Neem oil on many ornemental plant but avoid using it on fruit or vegetable since I was aware of its potential toxicity. Have you been using it directly on near mature figs ?

    • @RKfigs
      @RKfigs  Před 3 lety +2

      No I generally apply before fruit set and after all the fruit is gone and only if I see a problem with the tree. Another good time to apply is when the tree is dormant and has no fruit or leaves, this will take care of any over wintering posts.

      I've never put organza bags from the start only when the fig begins to ripen. I don't think neem oil works on beetles but I've never tried that. However it's usually more for the microscopic pests because it smoothers them.
