All You Need Is Love: The Story of Popular Music is the name of a 17-part television documentary series on the history of modern pop music directed by Tony Palmer, originally broadcast worldwide between 1976 and 1980. The series covers some of the many different genres that have fallen under the "pop" label between the mid-19th century and 1976, including folk, ragtime, Tin Pan Alley, vaudeville and music hall, musical theatre, country, swing, jazz, blues, R&B, rock 'n' roll and others.
All You Need Is Love was born out of the reaction to his 1968 Omnibus episode on popular music called All My Loving which presented the music of the 1960s with no reference to the musical forms that preceded it. Around 1973, Palmer conceived of a 16-part documentary about American popular music which, after considerable shopping around, he convinced Bernard Delfont of EMI to bankroll. He proceeded to film over 300 interviews in approximately one million feet of film and was given access to archival footage of the same length. Instead of writing a script, he enlisted the help of a dozen or so subject matter experts who wrote 2000-word essays that became the narration for each part.
John Lennon was a friend and mentor to Palmer during the production of the series, and its title is taken from the Lennon-penned 1967 Beatles song, "All You Need Is Love". Although punk rock had entered the pop music scene while the series was being constructed, Palmer was refused the funding and time to include the genre in All You Need Is Love.

Mad genius! Sad he ended up dying in a very small room all alone with just a tiny sink bed and toilet. There is a fine line. Isn't that what they say? Its ok now Phil. You're free. Thanks for the music and i hope your at rest in Paradise.
@Little Miss Perfect yes...very sad. I hope that poor woman is at rest in paradise as well. I'm more talking about the music Phil Spector produced and wrote. Very unstable guy and in the end a murderer. Not condoning what he did. But he never kills someone until he is 70 years old? Drugs and alcohol were involved. Throw in Phil's unstable side and a thing like that is bound to happen. Whole thing is very sad though. But you can't take away Spectors Genius in the 60's.

WHERE THEY REALLY WERE was in a court room as the voters who vote on which side's theory -- the government or the defense for the accused citizen -- they agreed with, based on ONLY what they were presented with and how it was presented to them -- and WHAT exactly IS a trial in itself that that the jurors are experiencing when involved as citizens doing this civic duty they are called upon to do when two parties disagree about a matter in which the potential stakes for both -- especially the defendant's right of presumed innocence and continuing liberty -- no matter whatever conclusion is to be reached are the biggest they can be?
Well, what the jurors experience during a trial IS NOT REALITY -- it's an artificial recreation of what both sides are saying happened at some other time in some other part of town... cases aren't so much SOLVED as they are merely possibly able to be CLOSED. 🧑🏻⚖️

Phil should have made solo record like Bob Dylan. Just Phil and his guitar and voice. Now that our brains have been imprinted by the Christals, Ronettes that would have been wonderful. I think it would have gone platinum.
The Wrecking Crew guys said that Phil could have had a career as a jazz guitarist, he was so good. Wish we had that footage. RIP to the best music producer of our time

@@j.c7719 sufficiently doesn't make great, and by "great" I imagine someone with the likes of a Horowitz or a Rachmaninoff. In guitar he was miles better; after all we don't hear enough of Spector the pianist.
@@dap4699 No but that’s largely because he was a producer who only occasionally played on records, I have however heard him play piano and he undoubtedly had a talent for writing great songs on it and playing it, not on the level of those classical composers of course but still great, he wasn’t writing classical pieces, he was writing pop and rock songs. Apples and oranges.
Such absolute fucking talent in this man. I could say so much but I'll be selfish and say that i am thankful for all the memories he allowed me to have. I have always been so sad his life ended up the way it did. It didn't have to.

@@TheVinylking No, I wish I could say that I did. I was young when he was producing the music I loved and I read about him even back then. He was so talented and just ended up destroying his life. Sorry, I'd had a few drinks when I made that comment.

I think it's safe to say that as much of a genius as he was, he was burning out from the time he became successful. I mean his deranged instability was setting fire to everything around him. It was only til a matter of time til his madness would be answered after the worst thing he could do. He should have been thrown in a long time ago. He got his at the end.
He may have been talented and a great innovator, but he was an unbalanced human being who treated others poorly and didn't care about their feelings. Life was just waiting to collect on his misdeeds.
Gotta love a drunk. I will always be grateful to Phil for his musical contributions, but I'm really glad I never had to deal with the man in these film clips.

My grandfather interviewed phil in the 80s, and he always said that phil was definitely the smartest and most interesting person he has ever interviewed. He gave interesting and thought provoking answers. Not once did my uncle see the "evil" side of phil that the media places so much emphasis on.
Reminded me of my guitar playing, I can play those 3 chords, F chord is a struggle though.

I love Phil Spector. No matter how crazy he was and what he did- his music is forever staying with me. I also think that I would have loved him as a person, if I knew him - not necessarily all the time. The genial music he made with the musical geniuses he worked with will never die or cease to inspire new generations.
Nothing beats his music, I’ve heard it all and nothing is greater than his work.

He was on medication for bipolar disorder but he drank alcohol which made them not work
Yes he was on meds after his son died. People said in the 90s he was in a much better place mentally speaking. When he started drinking again those meds can make a person really really intoxicated. I've taken some of the meds he was on, like Prozac and klonopin. One drink feels like two. And even though he was a lot more stable after quitting drinking and seeing a doctor, if you react poorly to alcohol all the meds and therapy goes out the window of you drink again.
His voice sounds like Sonny (of Sonny and Cher) channeling Bob Dylan.
he was obviously trying to sound like Dylan in that one part. He bounced around with styles - just having a laugh, I think.
A lot of Phil rubbed off on Sonny who was schooled in guitar and production by Phil in the early sixties. You can definitely hear the wall of sound style in sonny and Cher as the used the same studio and musicians.

That was a man aged in his thirties...the toll of his many demons is writ large in every feature. What a beastly childhood it must have been.
He was in a car crash about a year before. He was driving his classic Rolls Royce and got caught in a downpour, lost control and went through the windshield, the old fashioned kind without safety glass, so his face was sliced up. He was almost declared dead on the scene. He had about 400+ stitches in his face and head. He started wearing more outlandish wigs colored in silver and gold. But the stress of his bipolar illness really aged him too.
@@mattmammone2338 It was that and his wealth. When he struggled to rise in the business he was just fine, until he got comfortable. Also losing his son had a devastating effect that contributed to the mental illness.

He used to drink entire bottles of Manishewitz wine. There is a photo of him in the back of a limo from these interviews, or about the same time, he had the same hair and clothing. He had a big straw right in a bottle of wine.
