We are restoring all the original doors, windows and hardware in our 110-year-old cottage as well as salvaging more from other homes in Texas. I knew paint removal and restoration process would take some time so during the April rain showers it was the perfect time to get started!

3 guest houses + 3 siding colour choices = 3 different coloured houses with their own individual vibe instead of cookie cutter sameness. But I live on an island with pastel coloured houses as the norm. No two houses are the same.

What if you choose all 3 for the side paneling? Each one gets one of the 3 colors. When you held them side by side, I thought it was such a pretty color story. You’re also trying to keep each one unique inside so I thought maybe different exteriors would be cute too. Each color kind of compliments each other.

Yes, plastic wrap is a great help when stripping. If the stripper dries out, it stops working. (Especially when it starts to get warmer in Texas.) Plastic wrap will prevent it from drying out too soon. It's a lot of work but it will be gorgeous.

You need Saran Wrap. Put the stripper on the section of the door thickly. Cover with Saran Wrap. Leave it for awhile. You will waste less stripper and will work so well. The stripper won’t dry out and will work much faster. Do not use the steel brush. It will really open the pores of the wood.

I'm closer to your mother's age, and I remember the days when we would entertain a large group of people, using our best china etc. My mother always told me to buy 13 of everything, because then you could serve 12 guests, and have one extra. I remember the very first time I had a dinner party, someone dropped a salad plate and broke it!! Now all these beautiful pieces live in my china cabinet. My mother passed away, and she had 13 pieces of every style of glassware possible. I used some pieces to decorate for Christmas....

    Hey MaCenna!
For the doors you don’t have to pour the stripper into a metal can you can just pour it over the door and even it out with a brush. You also want to make sure you lather a lot of stripper onto the door and make sure it doesn’t dry out. This will take the pain of easier and you’ll be able to use the plastic scrapper with no issues. It should look gooey when you’re removing it.
For the metal plates try using Barkeepers Friend on them to clean and polish them and see how you like them!
    Good luck 😊💜

Also, since it's been damp there, storing the doors flat in a dry environment stacked for weight will keep them from warping.

You need to put a lot more stripper on the doors. Make a thick layer, and it will scrape off like butter. There is also a citrus based stripper I use, I'm not sure what the name is in America but I know you can get it there, but it works an absolute treat. You won't regret it in terms of the time it will save you. I love stripping the paint off furniture and doors - it's so incredibly satisfying watching the wood come back. Have fun!

a tip to make stripping the paint off your doors a bit easier and make it go by quicker. Apply more of the stripper to the doors, use a very liberal amount. The goal is to keep the stripper wet, even after the 15 minutes are up. If you let it dry like you had in some parts in this video it will take more work to remove. Also, use a product called mineral spirits and that brush to clean off the residue left after you strip your paint. "that shabby guy" on youtube is a great resource to see how to do it. hope this helps!

Hey! Unless the product you use tell you otherwise, apply some cling wrap on the door after you've apply the stripper. Some of the substance won't evaporate as quickly, and could work even more efficiently on the wood. Try using steel wool in to scrape off the paint in the smaller/detailed area of the door. I hope these tricks will help you same a bit of time!

Don’t you just love those blue flowers? I’ve been in Texas for 3 years and this is my first year seeing them! They’re so pretty dried, too!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 the glass saga. But your mum is right, with vintage glassware finding replacements is difficult nigh impossible. This is how restoration and reuse should be done, amazing 🤩

Love the door plates and I absolutely agree with your mom - $8 (really the difference of $4) isn't worth the regret! I highly recommend Bar Keepers Best Friend to clean your plates that are brass after you remove the paint. It will help restore them to the original glory and over time will still tarnish beautifully.

Quick tip, try putting on lots more paint stripper! You can just pour it straight from a can and spread it around with the brush, but the coat should be very thick. Also btw mortise is pronounced MOR-tiss! :)

For the doors apply a little bit more of stripper and add plastic wrap after application. Use also a metal scrapper instead plastic.
I restored furniture and that how easy I make it works. The metal plates it is so short time of you boiled them 50/50 water and white vinegar mix. Then buff with bar keeper.

I think you should go with the cobblestone siding for the new builds since you are using white for the main house. That way they are still light but not competing with the main house or looking too matchy.

Using a rubber band for stripped screws is a good way to unscrew them. If you need this in the future!

Hey Macenna! I have a jewelers’ trick for removing tarnishing/oxidation from metal things: you can put them in a solution of 1cup distilled white vinegar : 1 tbsp of sea salt in that crock pot you have. It removes tarnishing really quickly!
