The Miami Heat had traded former star center Shaquille O'neal to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks just days ago. Today was Shawn Marion's debut with the Miami Heat, a game against the much improved Los Angeles Lakers and Kobe Bryant. But the center of attention in the game was the matchup between the 2 allstars Kobe Bryant and Dwyane Wade, 2006 Finals MVP.
Early in the game, both players were quiet. Bryant had 5 points on 2-3 shooting and Wade had 2 points on 1-6 shooting. It wasn't the same way in the 2nd half. Turning his game on in the 2nd half, Bryant shot 6-10 with an aggressive mindset while shutting down Wade at the other end. Wade continued to struggle putting up 9 turnovers. He also had an airball, was dropped by Sasha Vujacic, and was outmatched by Bryant's lockdown defense which was at it's finest at the end of the 3rd quarter. Bryant frustrated Wade to the point he commited a hard foul on Bryant on a fastbreak dunk attempt. He committed a hard foul that could have and should have been a flagrant foul had it been another player and not Wade. It was a foul that also could have been a suspension.
Even the preferential treatment of Dwyane Wade was no match for Kobe Bryant's dominance. Examples of preferential treatment is the first foul on Bryant, a fly by on a three point attempt by Wade, and a foul on Lamar Odom on an attempted layup by Wade. Despite several other attempts by the refs to bring Miami back into the game, the Lakers prevailed and enjoyed a 104-94 victory over the Miami Heat who fell to 9-40. The Los Angeles Lakers improved to 33-17 and 3-1 with Pau Gasol.

Wade did carry that team til he got injured, Shaq wasnt even in the lineup, his starters around him were old zo, old gp, and posey and haslem........ and he had them at 26-24 without Shaq while averaging 28/7/5 with good d on 50% field goals (led league in PER too) but then he got injured in game 51 and he hasnt been the same since .
(Hopefully he will be by next year though, he should with his injury should be good by next year and he's young).

I love Wade's points off Kobe came exclusively off help from his teammates with screens and picks except for a jumper I believe in the 4th quarter. On the flip side, the double always came while Wade was guarding Kobe, but at times not when Davis or Wright was on him - what does that say about Wade's defense and Riley's confidence of said defense.

@Metalstryke Also Gasol has been as important to the Lakers success just as much as Kobe has been the last 3 seasons. Gasol's post presence down low opens up the offense and his skill level makes the triangle offense thrive. Also Gasol was a superb player before arriving in LA. After the trade that brought him to LA, analysts instantly placed the Lakers as an elite team and into championship contenders. Why? Because people knew the kind of player Gasol was. He was better than just "good."
All it takes is for Kobe to Get Decent Talent and Role Players and He Will get you a Chip.

I think it is understood Kobe had the better outside jumper than MJ. MJ did it to the Cavs who werent that bad of a team. Kobe did it to the Raptors who were gawful. It was still a great accomplishment and good for the game but Jordan was smarter. Jordan knew how to use all his weapons. Kobe settles for way to many jumpers early in the clock instead of passing or even gettin to the rim. His accomplishments after shaq and before Gasol showed me that he was no better off than KG in Minny.

another great game for Kobe..the dunk in the beginning was so sick. He was shooting very well..knocking down three and fadeaways. Pau didnt play that well offensively and defensively..he let those young and old guys get easy buckets. i see a better future for the heat..marion will fit well because now they have a lot of fast and young guys. but they really need to work on their fastbreak haha..there were two consecutive embarassing ones.

Some MVP. Nash again posted better numbers across the board. Phoenix won 61 games that season. Answer me this...Which other seasons should Kobe have won MVP's?

Nash came to Phoenix a turned a 29 win team into a 62 win team while shooting over 50% from the field and averaging a double double every night in 05. In 06 Stoudamire missed practically the entire season yet Nash's Suns still won 54 games. His stats were also better all across the board minus 1assist per game. Both his MVP seasons the Suns made it to the WCF. Player like Nash?

Phil Jackson makes Gasol better with the triangle offense which allows Gasol to be the skilled player that he is. Guess what? Kobe as the man in LA wasn't doing much either. Both players were 1st round exits except Gasol as the man in Memphis helped his team win 50, 49 and 45 games. Kobe during those post Shaq and pre Gasol seasons was a 34, 45 and a 42 game winner.
