  • Continuing my series of 1997-98 Jordan games for the 20th anniversary, this is an early season match up between the Bulls and the Magic.
Before the 1997-98 season, Penny Hardaway declared that he was going to lead the league in scoring in 1997-98. He scored over 30 points in his first two games and it looked like he might dethrone Jordan as the NBA's scoring leader.
In this game, Jordan out dueled Penny with 29 points, 17 rebounds and 4 assists as the Bulls won the game. Penny had 20 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists but shot just 6-19. They also had some great one on one matchups in this game.
This is Jordan and Penny's last real battle. They did meet again when Jordan was with the Wizards and Penny was with the Suns, but this was the last time before Penny's injuries took away his quickness and explosiveness.
If he was not injured, Penny would have been one of the greatest of all time. His first 4 years in the league were spectacular, making All- NBA first team two straight years.

Penny Hardaway with some serious footwork and taking Jordan to school; classic duel; Penny and Jordan would bring out the competitive spirit more so out of each other.

What a big difference 6 years makes: at 2:16 it's a near-exact replica of MJ's famous change direction in mid-air layup against the Nets from 1992. Except now, in a more athletically mortal form at age 35+, he didn't have the hangtime to pull it off.

I thought the exact same thing. It is almost identical the way he moves the ball in the air 3 times. That was the reason that I included that miss in the highlights.
He just didn't have the hang time in 1997-98 to make that shot. Maybe in 1996 he would have made it.
Have you seen the switch hands right to left missed shot he did against the Nuggets in 1996 at Chicago? It's very similar to his switch hand layup against the Lakers in game 2 of the finals.

I've probably seen it, but don't recall. Do you have a link?

I see the similarity, but he more lost the ball there and was able to recover and almost make the shot. :P

jordanlover23 I don't think that's why he missed the shot though. That thing almost went in and just happened to miss. Certainly not the same hangtime, that much is true, but it's not why the shot went out. He's missed switch-up shots in the past too ya know.

Weird starting lineup for the Bulls here, Jordan, Randy Brown, Harper, Jason Caffey & Longley. Kukoc & Rodman coming off the bench.

17 rebounds and playing 2nd highest MPG at age 35 for over half a season and getting it done. Now that's GOAT'ing it for real. If this were Kobe, he'd have given up on the season and just focused on scoring for himself as opposed to the team. The funny thing is, with all Kobe's selfish play, he only won the scoring title like once or twice in a 20 year career. WTF?

That's cuz Kobe was never consistent. Even in his scoring leading years, he never really was hot, he took many shots to get points and the few times he was hot he milked it by shooting away to get those 40-50 point games because he never knew when he would be hot again. Inconsistency is why he only has 2 scoring titles in a jillion years. MJ always lived in the zone, hence the insane FG% for all that shooting and never having to milk games since he was always on.

This hating ass post..smh..Kobe never cared about a scoring title for one. And at 34 years old he focused on getting more assist and playing so the team could make the playoffs which they did..stop being fucking haters and appreciate the greats of the game..
