Jonny Arnett did a great job in dissecting MJ's DPOY home blocks but his overall assessment of Jordan's steals was inaccurate due to his omission of several key factors. Jonny analysed 10 of MJ's 41 home games from the 1987/88 season (6 of these were the games referenced in Haberstroh's article) and by far the 2 biggest takeaways from his analysis were... 1. Jordan was 100% deserving of his DPOY award. 2. His block count was UNDER credited and his steals were over credited, by a very similar number. Most of us were already aware of number 1, but number 2 was undeniably the most interesting and revealing discovery in the entire video. The footage from the 10 games revealed that there were 15 occasions where Jordan got his hand on the opponent's ball, disrupting the offense and causing a deflection...Jonny assessed these deflections as 15 'possible blocks', but noted that the Statistician did NOT credit these 15 blocks to MJ's official block count. Ask yourself this question. If that Statistician was purposely inflating Jordan's defensive stats, why would he UNDER credit Jordan's blocks? If his goal truly was to inflate Jordan's defensive stats, he UNDOUBTEDLY would have credited every single one of those 15 'possible blocks' to MJ's block count...but he didn't. It's obvious to any rational person what happened here...there was no 'gifting' of steals, the Statistician clearly assessed those 15 'possible blocks' as steals and placed them accordingly. Yet, despite this obvious surplus/deficit correlation between MJ's blocks and steals, Jonny STILL concludes at the end of the video that his steals were intentionally inflated, which simply doesn't make any sense! The question is, was the Statistician correct in assessing those 15 'possible blocks' as steals? Should they have been labelled as blocks, as Jonny identified them in his video? To answer that question, research would need to be conducted into how blocks and steals were analysed in the 80's, the rules of that Era would have to be factored in and consideration given to exactly how these rules were consistently interpreted and officiated. I was watching a 1992 Bulls game earlier today and on 2 occasions Jordan got his hand on the ball in the passing lane, deflecting the ball to his teammates and the commentator announced 'another steal for MJ ' on both occasions, indicating that steals were credited to the player causing the deflection...that's not consistent with how Jonny analysed MJ's steals during his breakdown. Also, something else that wasn't accounted for in Jonny's video is the fact that the Statisticians in the 80's didn't have the luxury of relying on instant replay or multiple camera angles, they had to make an assessment from the sidelines in real time. It's highly plausible that, from the vantage point of the Statistician, some of those 'possible blocks', may have been mistakenly interpreted as steals, especially when you consider how lightning quick MJ's movements were, his hands in particular. Either way, it's obvious to any logical person there was no 'gifting' of stats, the Statistician clearly interpreted those 15 'possible blocks' as steals and that is evidenced by the fact that Jordan's blocks were under credited. BOTTOM LINE: Jordan's blocks were UNDER credited and his steals were over credited, by a very similar number...that is the crucial point here. A Statistician intent on artificially inflating defensive stats simply would not UNDER credit one of those defensive stats. Logic dictates that those 15 'possible blocks' were considered steals by the Stat-keeper, either correctly or incorrectly. It's important to note that even if Jonny is correct and those 15 deflections are in fact blocks and not steals, Jordan's official steals count for those 10 games would indeed need to be reduced by 15, however, his official block count would then need to be INCREASED by 15. So no matter what way you slice it, whether those 15 deflections are placed in the steals column or in the blocks column, it wouldn't change Jordan's overall defensive stats in those 10 games because you would essentially be subtracting 15 from one defensive column and adding 15 to another defensive column! The fact is, when you combine the total number of blocks and steals that Jonny tracked, into one single figure, that figure almost perfectly matches the box score...ergo, no evidence of stat inflation. Ironically, all this digging into MJ's DPOY season has only further cemented how deserving he was of that award. Watching those 10 games alone, the first thing that jumps off the screen is the fact that he was absolutely everywhere on the court! Closing down passing lanes in the post and the perimeter, forcing turnovers, full court pressure, half court pressure, denying the ball, a 6ft 6 rim protector with a penchant for blocking 7ft centers, suffocating man-to-man defense, exceptional help defense...all whilst carrying the offensive load for the Bulls. The speed at which he moved around the court was simply mind-boggling! His explosiveness, jumping ability, hustle, quick GIANT hands, defensive IQ, fundamentals, timing and instincts, were all truly remarkable. Add to that his laser focus on disrupting the opponent's offense and his determination to never give up on a play and you have a DPOY winner. Jordan's relentless defensive pressure meant that his opponents always had to account for where he was on the court, which led to them frequently turning over the ball and forcing difficult shots. Jonny's video correctly highlights the fact that, as impressive as MJ's steals and blocks were, a lot of what he did defensively cannot be seen on a stat sheet. This is true for any All-Time Defender. In 1987/88, a panel of 124 sportswriters and broadcasters analysed the defensive efforts of each DPOY candidate, in each of their 82 games and concluded that Jordan was the best defender in the league. Reducing his official steal count by 15 and increasing his block count by 15 would not change that, it would have ZERO impact on the validity of his DPOY award. Period. One final thing worth noting...if you read back through Habertroh's article, not once does he mention the fact that Jordan's blocks were UNDER credited in the 6 games he claims to have analysed. NOT ONCE.

The first two “steals” you show are not steals. The first one is a turnover, not a steal. The ball went out of bounds. You can never get a steal if the ball goes out of bound. I agree that the first one was not a steal but I included it in the video because I thought it was great defense. I disagree with you that a player cannot get a steal if the ball goes out of bounds. If you strip someone of the ball and the ball goes off their leg and out of bounds, you should be credited with a steal because you have caused the offensive player to lose the ball and there has been a change in possession. The second one is definitely a steal because there was a change in possession when Rory Sparrow got the ball. It certainly would have re-set the shot clock so it is possession. The stats on that play would have been steal by Jordan, turnover by Sparrow, steal by Lever.

And I'm not sure if you read the comment under the video but it says ---- The NBA rule book states: "If a player deflects a pass or dribble and controls his deflection either away from an opponent or towards a teammate resulting in eventual possession for the defense, the player causing the deflection is credited with the steal." The question is do the defensive plays in this video reflect the NBA rules at the time?

  • @jtremaine23

Thanks for the vid...I was hoping someone would make some videos about this. What's interesting is the next year, MJ's highest steals game was on the road with 9 against the Celtics and his 2nd highest was at home against the Celtics. I guess the Celtics were cheating for him too then lol. The funny thing is Alvin Robertson, who was 2nd in steals in 1988, had more steals at home than away but I wonder if Haberstroh researched him too.

A classic playoff battle between the goat and penny? Penny never faced lebron. Lebron is the only goat. You praise a myth. You praise a player who was made by the nba. A player who played in a crackheaded era. Jordan isn’t no goat. Keep pathologically lying to yourself.

So confident that I go on Jordan post and videos and flood the comment sections with facts dating any Jordan fan to debate with me. Insecure? That’s exactly what jordan and his fans are, insecure. Jordan fans do more posting and videos of Lebron than Jordan. Jordan fans know more about Lebron than they do Jordan. Alright man, I’ll play. Let’s start with this… 5 MVPs 6 Finals MVPs 6 Championships 10 scoring titles 2 Slam Dunk championships Highest scoring average in NBA history (30.1) Highest scoring average in Playoffs history (33.4) 3rd all time in steals per game 3 steals titles Defensive Player of the Year 2 Olympic Gold Medals 0 Olympic bronze medals And before you start to make excuses for all the reasons LeBron hasn’t been able to match Jordan’s accomplishments, can you please explain how the GOAT could possibly have 8 points on 3-11 shooting in an NBA Finals game and lose to a team with one All Star when he had 2 All NBA players on his team including the 3rd best shooting guard ever. And before you start making the career totals argument, answer me this, who is a better point guard, Magic Johnson or Mark Jackson? Because Mark Jackson has more career assists than Magic

@@jxn23 That’s it? That’s all you got? Before I drop Lebrons statline let me address that dumboness comment of yours. Before I come with excuses on why lebron never accomplished what jordan did? Did you really just say that? 😂🫵🏼😂. Little betty, lebron has accomplished way more than jordan. What you talking bout willis? 😂🫵🏼😂 In my next comment I’ll show you how Lebron accomplished more. How can the goat go 3-11 and score 8 points in the finals? Same way jordan only scored 15 points vs the pistons in the playoffs when joe dumars locked him down. Jordan once shot 8-20 vs the pistons and lost. Same way jordan went 7-25 and had 9 turnovers vs the magic in the playoffs of 1995? Tell me how does a goat have a 4 time scoring title champ teammate and still lose in the 1st round. Tell me how does your goat have a superteam in 1985 and still lost in the 1st round. 1985 bulls had, Jordan 22ppg Woolridge 20ppg Gervin 16ppg Dailey 16ppg Green 13ppg that’s a superteam and jordan still lost in the 1st round. Explain to me how does your goat get outscored by a crackhead in a playoff series. Jordan got outscored by crackheaded Terry Cummings. Explain to me how does Jordan have a superteam in 1995 but lost to baby penny in the 2nd round. In that 1995 playoff series vs the magic jordan shot 7-25 and had 9 turnovers. In another game of that series jordan shot 9-28 and had more turnovers plus nick Anderson had the game winning steal on Jordan. Explain to me how your goat played 15 seasons in a crackheaded era and only 6 finals appearances. Explain to me how do you label a certified quitter who quit the nba twice the goat. Jordan had Gervin who won 4 scoring titles and Jordan still lost in the 1st round. The 2011 mavs had 1 allstar? 😂🫵🏼😂 Let me break down who that 2011 mavs had. Dirk, Dirk is the best 1 on 1 scoring power forward ever. Dirk is also an mvp winner. Kidd is a top 5 best pg’s ever if not top 7. Jason Terry at the time was #8 on the all time 3pt leaders list. Terry was also a top 3 best 6 man at the time and a top 5 top 7 best 6 mans ever. Marion was a former allstar, a really good defender, versatile, and energetic. Tyson chandler won dpoty in 2011. Peja was a sniper. That 2011 mavs team only lost 2 games in the western conference playoffs that year. They lost 1 game to the blazers and 1 game to okc. That 2011 mavs team ran through the blazers in the 1st round 4-1. Blazers had, Brandon Roy Lamarcus aldridge Batum Rudy fernandez Camby Andre miller Gerald Wallace Matthews. In the 2nd round the 2011 mavs beat the defending champion lakers. Oh no wait,,, they didn’t just beat the defending champ lakers,,,, they swept Kobe’s lakers. 😂🫵🏼😂 In the wcf’s the 2011 mavs beat okc 4-1. Okc had, Durant 28ppg Westbrook 26ppg Harden 18ppg Ibaka. @@jxn23 Who’s a better pg? Magic is a better pg than mark jackson but Marc Jackson was just as good as a passer as magic. Magic was just a better pg cause magic rebounded better, defended better, scored better, has way more triple doubles and more. It’s not just about the assist. But passing wise yes mark jackson is equal as magic. So yes magic is a better all around pg but as a passing pg mark is equal to magic passing wise. They both passed amazing. You said jordan had the highest ppg average? Wrong. Wilt has the highest ppg averaged with 55ppg and he also averaged 44ppg.
