As celebration of the lunar new year, the ‘tet’ is an important holiday to Vietnamese people.
In January 1968, the North Vietnamese and Communist Viet Cong forces would use the event to their advantage to strategically launch an offensive when the enemy’s guard was down.

My father's dad (aka my grandfather) was a MP in Saigon, he is a Vietnamese, the stories he used to tell me are just like what you told. Before the war almost over, my grandparents moved to japan and my dad married my mother. Even now most of my grandfather momento and diary is still kept.
Hi
My first year in the Army was in 1993. My platoon Sgt was in Vietnam one day before Tet.
He laughed and told me his first day was relaxed and they got to drink beer and BBQ. He was told it was pretty quiet and not to expect much. The next day was Tet. He was almost killed by a B40 rocket. The guy was tough as nails. I had much respect for him.
Lol! When I got to my first line unit, 3rd ID in Germany, my Platoon Sgt was a Vietnam Vet to. He was one of the most interesting...and colorful, individual I've ever met.
My dad landed in Vietnam the day the offensive started. He said rockets were exploding in the airport as they landed.
My ex boss too, no weapon assigned yet, had to take an ak from a dead Vietcong
He landed in Than Son Nhat , probably .
Wow that had to be terrifying. I appreciate your father’s service.

@Skrooge Lantay by 1972 i think they cut of aid to south Vietnam what are you gonna do with all of that if you dont have repairs fuel or ammo. North Vietnam was still supplied by the ussr and chinese they had what any soviet soldier had
That's what I always think they win pretty much most battles but leave so they lost. "The north-vietnamese and Vietcong forces would use the event in their advantage and *strategically* planned an offensive"
They straight up broke their promise.
Was it a brain fart by NVA high command?
What make them do that while bleeding American to death strategy performed by Viet Cong was working fine?
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 I think it was the best option they had if they were going to go through with the attack, but in all honesty fighting the US head on would be be like a chihuahua trying to fight a German Shepherd. Its going to go exactly like you think.
The U.S. was planning to pull troops out anyway since South Vietnam never agreed to sign the contract that would put them under American territory.
@@thanakonpraepanich4284 The idea was to destroy South Vietnamese, and possibly American, morale, thereby ending the war faster. It's not unheard of for weaker forces to try to destroy the morale of a technically stronger enemy with big, risky victories. In the US Civil War, the entire Confederate strategy was to try to win enough big battles to either convince the Europeans to get involved or to cripple Union morale.
In the case of both wars, the strategy backfired but the North Vietnamese enjoyed far more foreign support (Communist China and Soviet Union both provided money, weapons, supplies, and training) than the Confederates as well as a populace that was more "willing" to stomach heavy losses.
gotta admit, yeah
My grandfather is a local of Saigon and was present in the city when the offensive happened. He was employed as a freelance driver back in the days, he used to do truck shipments, taxi service or as a personal driver. During the later phase of the battle of Saigon when the heat had died down, he took to delivering shipments.
Now he told me that when he approached a road that situated near a US army encampment, a few people stopped him from entering the street and coerce him to go somewhere else, be didn't want to pick a fight so he complied.
Later after a few days he found out that the road that day was a Vietcong sniper zone, they were aiming for easy-to-pick military persons going in and out of the camp and had taken the lives of several US soldiers that day. The people who stopped him were probably Vietcong as well and didnt want civillians to get caught on the street. He didn't tell me what happened to the sniper and the group and I didn't ask.

My father didn't want to be drafted, so thought he'd be smart and enlist as an MP, maybe get guard duty at some gate house in Germany or something. Nope, they sent his unit to Vietnam, guarding the airport in Saigon and other tactical targets around that city starting in '67. They were in the thick of it during Tet. He avoided being at the Embassy that day, but helped backup and evac around the racetrack. Didn't tell us much about his experiences for years.
716th MP Battalion "Saigon Warriors" still active to this day.
I wonder how my life would be different.
I took the test to join. I scored an 87. The recruiter called and my parents were present on speaker phone. He said congratulations son, you scored high, you won't see any action if conflict were to erupt. I was already to sign up.
Exactly 1 week to The day, GW BUSH declared war. Recruiter called and said we're going to war son, we're going to need intelligent men like you on the field.
I avoided his calls. Instead got married. Landed a great job. Got into an accident got addicted to painkillers. Got divorced at 36. Met a 23 yr old. Have 2 sons with her. My boys are toddlers. My ex wife couldn't conceive. Deep down that probably fueled my old addiction too.
