When I was fourteen I had a paper route during the late 1960's. I would collect money at the end of the month and stand in the doorway to wait. The nightly news would usually be on in the living room and I would get a bits of the war. There would be updates on how many US soldiers died in recent action as well as how many of the enemy were killed. I remember watching/reading about Tet and Hamburger hill and wanted no part of that.
When I was younger I had strong allergy attacks and went to a hospital twice a week for shots. My mother was fairly certain this would keep me out of the army and had the necessarily documentation. At the time the war was raging and there was on end in sight.

My dad severed in Vietnam, and told me a few stories about how it was for him. He said he would grab a large piece of grass to find trip wires for the traps.
He also recounted two firefights. He told me how when he was being shot at, it sounded like bees flying overhead, and thought they were until they hit the mud. Another one was when his rifle broke, and thought he was hit, expecting to die. When he realized he wasn't hit, he put his rifle back together to start returning fire.
He also recounted a helicopter pilot who did loops with the heli, and also how when they were flying how cool it was to go along the rivers, but also nerve racking. He also talked about making foxholes and being on bunker duty...
though there's one story that sticks with me no matter how much I try to forget it. That a truck with a few guys he knew hit an mine, and how everyone was killed, and how they couldn't tell which bit was who...
