Without the materials needed to keep their massive war machines going, the Japanese and German forces began scrambling to find ways to supply their forces while using the least amount of resources possible.
This generally meant making crude forms of their current weapons, finding ways to dramatically simplify production or even making completely new and often times extremely simple firearms. These weapons were a last ditch effort to keep the Axis powers fighting until the very end.

Rost Mandzak This. The bayonet in the Japanese army, along with the Korean army, which had a carbon copy mindset of the Japanese army up until the 1960’s, had been practicing standardized bayonet training for all soldiers long after they were considered obsolete. This is mainly because east asian armies in general consider physical superiority to be a core part in winning a war. Mostly because this part of Asia was a sword wielding warrior society than having a real military.
My father served in the navy, and to my surprise he got bayonet training as well, he showed it to me with an airsoft gun after a few drinks, and i have to say, it looks fucking impressive. Probably why they will never get rid of their bayonets.

It also had a two part wooden stock that was glued together in the butt section. This was an early attempt to use less wood as two smaller pieces are a lot more common than one larger piece.

The sights on the early model Type 99 aren't necessarily just for windage or elevation, they are also anti-aircraft sights. The rifle was designed in a time where aircraft were slow enough that a battalion of troops could raise their rifles to the sky and act as a mobile anti-aircraft battery. So the Japanese, in their infinite wisdom, took the time and effort to make sights capable of targeting aircraft and slapped them on their rifles. Also, the late war bayonets manufactured by the Japanese had two mounting holes so that they could be distributed to civilians to be mounted on bamboo poles and used as lances. Wild times to be Japanese.
