Steve, I don't think the concepts contradict each other. The church is monotheistic in terms of who to worship, Jesus Christ. My understanding of the Godhead is that Heavenly Father is the first and foremost, then Christ, who has charge of this planet, then the Holy Ghost, who gives the Godhead omnipresence. It is likely that the history of the church is referring to a council of divine beings, including perhaps, Gods of other galaxies (100 billion+ estimated galaxies, according to Google). Disclaimer: I am not an official representative of the church, nor do I claim to answer as such. The above statements are my opinions.

"In the beginning, the head of the Gods called a council of the Gods, and they came together and concocted a plan to create the world, and to people it."
History of The Church, Vol 6, pg 302-17. King Follett Sermon.
    Book of Mormon teaches:
    Alma 11:27-39, 44
27 And Amulek said: Yea, there is a true and living God. 28 Now Zeezrom said: Is there MORE than one God? 29 And he answered, No.
    LDS QUIZ: Who is lying?
    A. Smith
    B. Book of Mormon

      God the Father
      God the Son
      &
      God the Holy Spirit
Human misunderstanding, due to lack of study, or limits of mortal comprehension or what have you, doesn't equate lying on the behalf of the servants of the Lord
That's like saying Scientific evidence of say... gravity is a lie because you don't grasp concepts building up the full understanding of the scientific building blocks required to create the force of it
Or a toddler thinking you're lying to them about some advanced concept they can't yet grasp because they haven't learned the things leading up to understanding it

@@michl2460 We can look at the problems of LDS and the changes that GOD would never rescind for any reason:
      1) polygamy stopped suddenly in 1890
      2) racism ended in 1978
      3) the consequences of the 'blood oath' penalty was removed in 1990
      4) Men are no longer intermediaries between women and God in the temple in 2019
Let's look at the old false teachings that were once considered solid "true" beliefs but are ignored now:
      1) Adam is the God over this earth, under the supervision of yet a higher god, and the father of Jesus
      2) Polygamy is required for exaltation
      3) Blacks are cursed
      4) Heavenly Father and Mary had intercourse to create Jesus on earth
      5) Blood atonement for crimes
      6) No heavenly reward without consent and "the certificate of Joseph Smith"

@@sevrinvorndran351 How would you know that he wouldnt rescind for any reason? The prophet receives revelation from God. If you have any problems with finding the truth, say a Prayer and think about it sincerely, and try have some faith. You need faith. Go to the nearest Church of Jesus Christ of latter-day saints and ask the bishopric about your questions.

@@michl2460 I've done that already but I asked many different people in LDS also. The only answer was "we can't know what God thinks" which is a cop out answer. These people are not experts and didn't even use scripture at all.
The real answer comes from the Bible and even Moroni 8:18 that God is unchangeable, the same yesterday, today and forever.
Any changes would be found in His Word not by the statements of men. You are making excuses instead of looking at the fact. Your fear of being wrong leads to false hope. Release it and trust Jesus only 100% and no one else.
That's what I do and find happiness in Him alone.
