Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia
In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.
Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

Homelessness is not the reason people become drug addicts. However, drug addiction is more likely to result in homelessness.
Nobody ever said that being homeless is a crime.
Buying and selling drugs are crimes, whether or not a person is homeless. It's sad to see people in that situation. Obviously, local politicians don't have the will to clean up the Kensington area. All the money spent on politics and yet where are the facilities to help those in need?
This problem is a national one and in every major city.
The federal, state and local governments are a disgrace when it comes to budgeting and implementing models for recovery, mental and physical health and general rehabilitation for our citizens who are most vulnerable. No decency nor dignity from government officials who look the other wày.
Literally one of the women you filmed is neither homeless or on drugs she is my friend and was sleepily trying to get groceries.... but thanks for making her go viral and have everyone thinking she's a junky lost her job because of the way you depicted her in this..... that's why assuming and filming without consent isn't ok

Hello. I live in Spain and had seen several videos about Kensington (Philadelphia) but none that spoke so clearly about the existing inequalities and the refuge that these people find in a cheap and lethal short-term drug. No one is probably interested in fixing the problem; Speaking harshly and clearly, for the authorities there are thousands of people who are likely to die and who represent a burden for them: the government. It's horrible but money always rules. Thanks
My friend has a son that she has rescued several time from his addiction. It did not work, even with money, housing and people caring for and about him, he apparently returns to restart the cycle. Even if the government funded everyone through clinics and counseling, it is going to take more that to fix this.
I am Russian and I completely agree with you. But the problem is also that one addict draws 10 more people into addiction. They will lose control of the situation if it goes on like this.

Being homeless can cause drug addiction because of the desperation and lack of judgment one can feel by not having a safe and peaceful place to rest your head and soul. The mind can get fragile and soft during times of pain.

I knew plenty of homeless people including myself once who never turned to drugs living out on them streets.

Not even close. There are so many addicts the streets are cluttered with people slumped over. It needs public attention. I have never in my life seen anything like it and until about a month ago, I had no idea a place like this even existed in our country outside of skid row. This needs to be talked about. There are people DYING. Mentally ill people who are completely hopeless, women who are abused. Diseases being spread. Drugs causing people to lose limbs..... and you're worried about the people filming them?

@kais.7075 They could put huge gates on one of the access roads like jurassic park Kensington Addict Park and every so often have a giant stash appear on a lift out of the ground instead of the goat see which drug tyrannosaurs fight over the stash and set up the gyrospheres to tour through the area.
I worked as a Police Officer here in the early 90's and Kensington Ave was never this bad. I can't believe the amount of trash on the street, the city won't come out and clean it up, such a disgrace.

The point is in the jail you still might have changed to recover from drug addiction. But on the streets, like this video, it is like legalized capital punishment for those poor people. Very sad.

A lot of the commentary is spot on while other parts are not so accurate. A picture is painted that the government is failing them. Reliance of government for many of the basics like healthcare, food, housing, is Communism. The United States is a capitalistic society where people can live the way they want to live. Help is always there for people who genuinely want it.
