Philadelphia's most dangerous street.
Problems with Drugs and Crime in Kensington Ave, Philadelphia
In Philadelphia as a whole, violent crime and drug abuse are major issues. The city has a higher rate of violent crime than the national average and other similarly sized metropolitan areas. The drug overdose rate in Philadelphia is also concerning. Between 2013 and 2015, the number of drug overdose deaths in the city increased by 50%, with more than twice as many deaths from overdoses as homicides. 2 Kensington's high crime rate and drug abuse contribute significantly to Philadelphia's problems.
Because of the high number of drugs in the neighborhood, Kensington has the third-highest drug crime rate by neighborhood in Philadelphia, at 3.57. The opioid epidemic has played a significant role in this problem, as it has in much of the rest of the country. Opioid abuse has skyrocketed in the United States over the last two decades, and Philadelphia is no exception. In addition to having a high rate of drug overdose deaths, 80% of Philadelphia's overdose deaths involved opioids, and Kensington is a significant contributor to this figure. This Philadelphia neighborhood is said to have the largest open-air heroin market on the East Coast, with many neighbors migrating to the area for heroin and other opioids. With such a high concentration of drugs in Kensington, many state and local officials have focused on the neighborhood in an attempt to address Philadelphia's problem.

As an ex meth addict for 22 years this is so sad to watch. I was a 'functioning addict'' and always had a job. I had no one to finance my addiction but myself. After 22 years I had grown SICK OF IT and prayed for God to save me . Within 10 days my apartment was raided and I went to jail for 4 weeks. I lost my job and my home . After jail I was completely sober and had lost all desire for drugs. I paid my attorney,my court costs and my probation off the next 5 years. I've been sober for 7 years now and have never looked back. You have to be tired of the drugs and have a hatred for them along with faith in God to overcome addiction and STAY off them.
I am happy for you.May God bless you.
@@latoya5241 thank you so much and God Bless you as well.
@@brianoden1798 Thank you.
Thank you God for your goodness. yourself🙏
Well said, I got sober in a very similar way. Kept praying to be sober again, my family would pray for the same for me. Went to jail, came out sober. I drank a little but I have quit that now as well.
7 years clean from these streets. I still go down here frequently. I wish everyone had the opportunity to find freedom from addiction.
That's awesome Nicole!! Hopefully your story can help others who are ready to clean up. Thanks for sharing.
Bless.
Clean for 7 years means you are still addicted to the drug and have fears. As many alcoholics who no longer drinkers use the same words. If you stop now and carry on life then people will know you as who you are now. Once people hear you are clean, they will red light stamp you to not be trusted. You should delete your comment and just be who you are now. That is when you are truly clean and away from any drugs. It is absolutely foolish to still go down there.
@singjazzy6697 Your comment is absolutely perposterous. I have been completely sober from any and all mind altering substances since October 2016. Henceforth, I am entirely abstinent. When I had stated that I go down there I was referring to going down there to do outreach and help feed the addicts who are suffering within their addiction. Please consider deleting your comment and maybe try gaining some knowledge and understanding while you are at it.
Thank you for making this video and raising awareness of the opioid crisis! I heard about it but I never knew there was such an epidemic in Philadelphia! There are a lot of homeless people there with serious drug addiction which makes their problems hundred times harder.

What a dreadful sadness am I feeling. Having watched this whole video with endless tears, and speaking as an italian citizen living in Italy, this is simply excruciating, especially considering the young age of the people shown (which… really shocked me). There is definitely something really bad going on within all of us humans, as a species. I am really devastated, and worried…
@a0921959210 I know, and perhaps I can even agree with your tought to some degree. But it would be too easy (and possibly unfair) to simply blame americans in general, considering also that 'people' are never really to blame as much as their class of political representatives (I also well know, though, that more or less everyone deserves their own political leadership provided that they are living in a democratic country; I know well too much this, being italian, believe me, as I certainkly am convinced that my country is actually led by a government swarming with demented and mentally incapacitated fascist clowns!), and even taking into account that such things don't seem to happen in Europe - not to this point - as far as I am aware of, still the capacity of human beings to destroy everything they touch... is indisputable (to quote Agent Smith from Matrix back in 1999, "(Humans) are virus"). Still it saddens me very much to witness such disgrace for the young people shown in this video. I am sure that, all in all, you agree with me, regardless of whose fault it is. That is, in the end, the whole point, on my opinion.
Absence of Family system is one of the main cause for all these

I just keep thinking that these people all belong to people that miss them. So many are lost. 😢
I feel the same way. It’s so tragic, so disturbing, so sad. This new drug they’re using, along with fentanyl is basically causing a skin eating condition. People say that it’s a “choice”. Addiction is NOT a choice. It’s a monster that will not lose its grip and will only cause the hell addicts suffer at its hands. I look at these people like humans, not just addicts. They are mothers, daughters, aunts; they are fathers and brothers, uncles; friends. They live each day in despair, insanity, homelessness, fear, poverty, deplorable conditions … they’re desperately seeking refuge, kindness and understanding. They need help, not arrest. They suffer even more trauma when they’re shut in a cage and left alone to agonizing withdrawal, getting no kindness, care, support and understanding. The conditions they suffer in jail are worse than living on the streets homeless and in fear of attack or death from the hundreds of addicts who roam the streets along with them. It’s a desperate situation that the authorities have the power and resources to make the world of “Kensington Ave” changed, obliterated and a thing of the past.

Woman with the ragged pants is days away from forever oblivion, I think.

I once visited Philadelphia in the mid-1970's (after the movie 'Rocky'), and it was nothing like I'm seeing here. It's a tragedy to see all these major American cities falling like this. Yet the Federal government is too busy with doing things like helping the Ukraine and the middle east. If something is not done to address this major problem, it will escalate to a point where all of the US is threatened.
Went WOKE.
You are the same type to claim the federal government is a nanny state and over-regulating. For the record, Biden-Harris Administration has committed more than $450 million to strengthen prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery support services and crack down on illicit drug trafficking. Ukraine support is basic defense against the invasion of a sovereign state that we had promised security to when Ukraine abandoned it's nuclear weapons. Sorry, but your MAGA talking points are based on a fabrication.
Biden's wide-open border policy will only exasperate this problem.

Please don't think this represents all Americans. I have never seen areas like this in my 34 years in this country.
I live in France now, but I spent 8 years in New York a long time ago. Due to intense family stress I used heavy drugs for a while. If I'd stayed and not returned to France, I would have been dead a long time ago, after going through something like this. The USA is the saddest place. The disregard of the wealthy for the less fortunate is revolting. It's painful to witness. Some of us cannot deal with the level of evil there, the lack of respect for other humans.

Its socialism. Recognise the causes or invite even greater problems.
The thing that hits me is the diversity of clothes, ethnicity and age of the people out on the streets.
It tells me that it's not just one group that's been marginalised.
It looks more like the economy, the infrastructure and the government, just fucked off one day - leaving behind a city of people with nothing to do, nowhere to go, nothing to aspire to.
They drive past them all day long as well which is very odd..
You can distinguish the newly-arrived: spring in their steps, clear skin with still baby fat on their frames.
Most of those clothes are given out to them. If they don't want to be naked, they wear what's available.
Is everyone on opiates?
they are mostly white, hence the police wont do anything to lock them up.
I like that the narrator doesn't just take the 'drugs r bad - m'kaaay?' tack, but looks to address the underlying issues that make addiction more likely. Addiction is a disease of despair.
No real punishment for drug dealers.
You are doing a great job
So sad. These people once had dreams, hopes, families. Then a couple of bad decisions and when the beast gets hold of you it doesn’t care about race, colour, creed, sex, looks or anything, once it’s got you, it’s got you.
The sad thing is quitting is easy once you make your mind.
@@saltdrum Requires help though, seeking help requires trust - paranoia prevents trusting. Fentanyl requires weaning-off.
@@saltdrum - it’s definitely not easy. I’m sure that many of these people would love the chance to go back in time and stop themselves from taking that first hit. But sadly, many of these people have been on drugs for 10+ years and many have mental issues as well to deal with. It’s a long and painful road for them to stop now. It’s possible, but it’s certainly not easy. It will probably be the hardest thing they achieve in their lifetime if they do manage to get clean. I truly feel sorry for each and every one of them.

Scenes like these are unfamiliar in my native Croatia. So this is all happening in a country that gives itself all the rights to go around the world and lecture other countries and cultures about freedom and democracy. In Croatia, Slovenia, Austria, Slovakia and a few other EU countries you don’t see scenes like these , cause the family unit is still strong, because people go to church, and because women are still women and men are still men.

I am so blessed to have never had to make these choices. So sad to see the younger ones with some meat on their bones, in the early stages of evaporation. People inherently want direction. It just seems living like this takes more effort than holding down a job and a roof over your head.
Physically it is but it’s hard for some people to function like that.
There are no jobs within 50-100 miles of there. All of those building and factories are empty. Most of those building, abandoned, don't have roofs.
Working the problem employs more people than solving the problem. Cities like this would go broke if they solved the problem and lost Federal money to work the problem. A lot of people make their living off the homeless. If those factories were open and running, this problem would not exist. This is the result of giving our jobs to China for 40 years. America replaced manufacturing know how with social worker know how.

And I'm a united states citizen who coincidentally lives about 15 minutes from this kensington. Thank u for your words
They chose it. No one forced these people to try drugs they knew were addictive, basically destroying their own lives. Perhaps the real problem here is the enabling by aiding with no strings, or conditions attached. I have conditions attached to my life, everyone that works does. I don't see why there's this attitude of, oh you want to continue doing drugs, well that's fine, here, let's give you food and some housing enabling you to continue living this way until the day you likely OD. Does that sound like a healthy way to treat this problem? It doesn't to me. If you're going to aide them, require something of them.
You, your fellow countrymen and all "allies" of the US around the world, especially those countries that DEPEND on the US Taxpayers and Military to keep their country safe, should be extremely concerned about the path the United States is headed down. Not many wanted to defend Trump in 2020 after the election, it seemed the entire world was glad Biden "won", but look at the world today. Biden is a demented joke, no one believes he has the mental capacity to buy a Happy Meal much less runt he US. We all know there's others behind the blue suit that are pulling the strings to this fool.
China certainly knows and so does Russia and Ukraine. They are profiting heavily from Biden and his crime syndicate.
All "ally" countries to the US should be supporting Trump and hoping he is re-elected.
Those of you in Foreign lands have no understanding of how many able-bodied people in the US aren't working, aren't educating themselves and are just sitting around living off of tax payers. These people aren't making themselves available to work or join the military, these people would be needed in a time of crisis or war, meaning your country won't get he help it needs.
@dh2392 I think your words also make sense, but I heard that some of them addicted to drugs without realizing it by being prescribed fentanyl. I wonder if drugs with these risks can be managed more strictly. If it is difficult to resolve the issue on its own due to lobbying by pharmaceutical companies, just as there is an international organization that manages nuclear materials, a strong organization can be implemented by excluding people related to pharmaceutical companies who have conflicts of interest and enforcing standards and rules through a group made up of other experts. I think it is good to regulate it accordingly. The average Korean perceives drugs as more dangerous than any other substance.
Is incredibly sad to see that many Human lives, left alone😢😢😢what’s happened to this Great Country???Where are the institutions responsible for counteracting homelessness?
I feel so sorry for all this People
There have been areas like this for decades. We never saw them in mass until the internet arrived

Anyone know what year this started. It must of been an alright place at some point in time.
so sad. Politicians neglect
Inequality has nothing to do with it. I work with addicts and there are people that have master's degrees, but most dropped out of school around 10th grade due drug exposure in their environment and having past abuse or trauma. However, this is not an injustice that needs should be handled by the government to give them housing and food stamps. Half the patients I work with have disability income and use it to buy their drugs. The only government help they need is drug rehab, and education for a long as they stay clean. On the other hand, we also have some patients that are in treatment and return a few days after discharge. Some have been patients for many years. Some leave as soon as they go through the detox and leave AMA, some don't make it that far. All patients are referred to outpatient or inpatient aftercare and very few go. This is a choice, not injustice. An addict is an addict and recovery is a lifelong process. If does no good to put them in a situation where they have more responsibilities than they can handle, when what they really need is to have help dealing with their past.
SHUTDown PURDUE the makers of OXYCONTIN
Crap. Lots and lots and lots of other people have trauma in their past and DON'T resort to drugs, just a bloody cop out
Lord have Mercy 🙏😣
Great job. Very informative with a good human aspect about it. I was shocked at the numbers of those obviously on drugs or that have mental issues. They out numbered the normal people 20 to 1 at least.
DRUGS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM, they are treating the symptoms that come about when a person finds themself in
overwhelming circumstances/situations that they no longer feel they have the ability to overcome. This Kensington crisis did not happen overnight nor will it start to subside overnight but positive action needs to start immediately before every city plays out like this. AFFORDABLE HOUSING, LIVABLE WAGES, MENTAL HEALTH ASSISTANCE
Aren't opiates peddled by the US healthcare system through legal prescription? Big pharma? SBC news missed that and blamed it on socio economics? push that left agenda.
This is NOT homelessness….it’s people from every where relocating to easy access of drugs. Stop calling it a homeless problem. Same in California….
there will be everything I imagine..
It is homelessness and extreme poverty...
I grew up in Kensington and Allegheny sad to see. This was a shocker back in the day it was a beautiful neighborhood! My dad Was a carpenter and a republican committee man and We never saw anything like this thank god I moved out😢 People used to help each other it was never like this,😢
This is why I live in the country far away from big cities.
Same.
As an Englishman, this is INSANE to me. Just wow.

This is very depressing to watch. Just a cross the river from me. Just WOW !!!! How many family members drive around and see love one in this condition and nothing they can do. It really getting worse. Drugs gotten so cheap now, it doesn't take that much to be in this condition and you are done for life.
I used to think it was only in the GTA game that Americans walked so strangely. I was wrong.🤣
This is so distressing to watch. so many young people caught up in this vicious circle of drugs and homelessness. I wonder what cause them to start taking the stuff in the first place.
The people who run the convenience stores must be very brave to remain open.
Was thinking the same. One store that showss up on here doesn’t allow anyone in to actually pick items up. They tell the clerk what they want and pass it through a slot in protective glass. Seen another where people are allowed in….No thanks…
They are mostly immigrants and commute from the suburbs everyday. They live in huge houses built on what was once farm land. 4 generations are typical.
They operate behind thick bulletproof glass. They have extended families that take yearly turns in country on VISA's running the cash cows taking from the 'druggies', selling mostly beer and cigarettes. Just until the kids graduate as a doctor or engineer, then they retire back in country, wealthy. They are living the 'Indian Dream'.
Государство виновно болезни этих людей.
The state didn't take these people out and start buying fentanyl and meth for them.

@@rtoguidver3651 Yeah, the drug dealers and the criminal gangs that supply them.
This should be shown in schools all over .All it takes is to make that one bad choice to try out the drug.Proper sad.
Rich country, poor management
The threat of sanctions against the Fed would soon have this cleared up.
Ужас. Как там люди живут? Это кошмар какой-то!!!
This issue will not be corrected until we get better government. Time has shown that drugs can't be stopped at the source so demand needs to be stopped.
So sad in this secution 😢😢😢😢
*An entire young generation lost. How can they want to do tis to themselves?*
Sorry. Every single one of them had a CHOICE
You are what is wrong in this world.
Thanks to remind.Yes we do have a choice my lov.
Absolutely, they want that to happen to them. It's their choice. So sad

Just say no to drugs.
No penalty for living on the street, no penalty for using drugs, no penalty for shop lifting, so they pay the personal price!
Thanks for the info. I’ve been watching videos showing Kensington, but I didn’t understand why people were zombie-like and seemingly stuck in place-it’s the horse medicine.
The key is drug abuse should be forbidden , not legalized. I wonder , are they killing their people to reduce population?
Are you genuinely advocating that we round up the homeless, forcibly kidnap them and reallocate them to a remote Christian conversion center?
