  • Not that difficult, even in porcelain tile which is much harder than ceramic. You do need to go fairly slowly and evenly, and keep the blade moving.

      If you soak your tile in water before - work will be much easier. If this tile absorb any water at all :)

    I tile professionally, custom showers and flat work. One tip you can try on the large circle is to cut a heavy score right up to your line, and then through cut 2-3 "pie slices" out of the circle. A quick tap with a hammer and they usually break cleanly at the score. Saves a lot of time, you may need to do a little cleanup like you showed though. Some tile is temperamental, but dividing the circle reduces internal stress and helps prevent random cracks. For the small circle I usually just cut a square since the escutcheon will cover it anyway. Great work John, I enjoy the house projects

    Long time viewer first time commenter in a really long time. I really like this home improvement channel you are doing. I haven't found someone else with the amount of knowledge and experience while also having none of the fussiness as other you-tubers. I hope to one day own a house and start renovations such as the ones you did in the kitchen. Please do not quit CZcams and continue with these videos. I also enjoy the videos that you produce that are edited with a little music in the background and let us just watch you make.

    I've done a lot of tile work. The easiest and cleanest way I've found is using a Rotozip and diamond bit plus masking tape on the cut. Nice job. Results are what counts and you got'em.

    John has said it in past videos, he shows you different ways that you can do something. He probably knows about diamond tip hole saws, i'd even be willing to say i guarantee that he knows about them. If you have the stuff laying around why spend extra money on a new bit.

    That's how I do it! :D but I use a little handheld ryobi 4.5 inch wet tile saw, which doesn't give you quite the range/ease of motion, but does make a huge mess and shock the hell out of you periodically

  • @Tiger90Drake

    Great advice! Wouldn't it be easier if you'd use a holesaw? And would it help to tape the surface to provent it from getting scratched if you slip?

    I've never cut a smaller hole like that, the larger circle sure. I would have bought a hole saw of the appropriate size. I guess this gives me an alternative to try!

    Quicker tip, use masonry drill bit for the smaller holes. For larger holes I use reciprocating tool with masonry grinder and use tile nips for any fine adjustments.

    • @IBuildItHome

      Nothing quick about drilling through porcelain tile with masonry bits.

      I Build It Home I'll send you a video of it or you can try it yourself. Goes much quicker and I've had good success. Sort of stumbled upon it in desperation to finish a house I was moving out of and ever since, always used this technique or tool. Love your videos!

    • @IBuildItHome
      @IBuildItHome  Před 6 lety +3

      Thanks, but I don't need to see a video on something I've already tried. You can quickly and easily drill regular ceramic tile, but porcelain is much harder and very difficult to drill with anything other than diamond.

    • @joechinchar9833
      @joechinchar9833 Před 6 lety

      recluse87 you just need to spray water as you do it, or use a cylinder shaped object and sponge sone water in. Then take the dimond whole saw bit and have at it. Really its much easier and faster... Just as long as you've got water. Takes a couple times to get used to though.
