Just a question.... Why american girls wear leggings with crop tops? Here in Italy we wear leggings with long t-shirts because leggings are a little sheer if you bend and they aren't just like jeans. In my school you can't wear leggings with crop tops.

For non-italian people: guys, this is "how to dress in Milan" not "how to dress like an Italian". Don't you guys think to go in Rome and dressing like that, thinking that you'll be perfectly blended in, because you will not! We Italians tend to have different style in different regions, so please keep in mind that if you decide to follow this tips!

Hi Tia, as an Italian girl who lives near Venice I say that you got the point: Italians think that being classy, elegant and sophisticated is the number one rule. In general I think we don't necessarily follow trends so much, because we think that some of them are so "volgari" 😂 I can totally say that what's important here is being stilish and not always follow temporary trends.

I think the unique aspect about Italian fashion that I like is what you said in this video, where it likes to play off the past. Seeing things that were popular in the 80s/90s today but with a twist. A bit contemporary. I know you said that the fashion trends you see are more based in Milan hence you live there and could differ from other regions but I feel that’s what makes Italian fashion in general show its own individuality. Italy is a seemingly traditional country, so I can see where the general appearance of how Italians dress come from. I really think it’s unique and interesting. Forza Italia!

    • @fedefili9699
      @fedefili9699 Před 6 lety +14

    Great video!
I don't live in Italy so I'm not updated about its trends but I think that about sneakers the black Vans Old Skool in textile are still big.
Luxury brands come and go as trends in Italy, in the early 2000s the Prada Americas Cup sneakers were very popular along the Belstaff raincoats and Evisu raw jeans.
Funny thing, I never expected the explosion of sportswear in Italy, as an expat that lived in more than one foreign country I noticed that in several european countries sportswear and the funny bag across the chest are associated with uneducated hooligans, especially for brands like Nike, Adidas and Stone Island.
American brands in Italy, apart the "immortals" like Nike, they swap often in the trends: I remember in the 90s were big Caterpillar and Carhartt, now there's Supreme.
I agree that italians tend to be more sober and safe on what they wear, they care about the perfect size (generally) and to not to look too much weird, despite we'd in the past terrible trends like the Buffalo shoes of the 90s.

I watched this video during my trip to Italy in Oct/Nov 2018 and observed some of what you mentioned here. I noticed old school vans, a lot of black, 90s and 80s fashion, particularly thick soled shoes. I also noticed a lot of women that appeared bare face but for lipstick, mascara, - aka not tons of foundation or contouring which is such a thing here now. Also I noticed many women with their hair natural, like girls with curly hair just left it long out and didn’t appear to have too much product in it so it was big and fluffy. Granted most of our time was in the train and tourist places. I smiled when I saw the balenciaga and their dupes that you mentioned and most notably I noticed many people of different genders, ages, and sizes wearing leather jackets. I got a pair of doc martens and a leather jacket when I got back home, watched a ton of your videos, and as much Italian language Netflix I could find to draw out my “move to Italy” fantasies.

I was in Italy for 6 monts in 2016-2017 and I saw many students had Eastpack backpacks. I found it really funny because I remember them from my childhood. Almost every one had those in my school back in 2001-2004 (I'm from Finland though). I couldn't afford it. Soon after became Dakine backpacks and then Fjällräven and now Nike but I haven't seen here Eastpacks anymore, maybe some people use it but it's not a trend. So when I saw Italians with Eastpacks I got flashbacks and 8 year old me would have been jealous. When I was a kid there where only just a few models but now they were in every colour and in every print you can imagine.
And one other trend was really interesting when I was in Italy: this Napapijri thing. As a Finn it was really weird to see Finnish word with Norwegian flag everywhere. I wanted to buy something from the brand just to make my Finnish friends laugh but it was way too expensive for that purpose. Btw it shoud be Napapiiri not Napapijri and it means the polar circle.
I saw other brands as well with nordic flags. I have no idea why that was a thing. But I didn't see any brand with a Finnish flag. Is this flag thing out or is it still "trendy"?

I live in Palermo, so I can't really relate AHAHAHAH never seen any of the things you listed in the video!
But I think you are pretty correct in saying that Italians tend to be very "conformative" (yeah I have no idea either if that's a word or not). I'm no fashion expert but I like to experiment with my clothes and I really like sewing and fashion history. During my high school years (more than ten years ago UGH) I really wanted some high wasted shorts or skirts, but since we were about to get out of the low waist nightmare, I was looked at funny because of my shorts and skirts. People though it was "grandma style".
And so on with LOTS of things.
In my experience, Not many Italians experiment with their clothes, in fear of being deemed ridiculous or yeah, "vulgar".
I've been wearing absurd outfits during my teen years and I had a blast doing it. Did I sometimes look ridiculous? Absolutely.
"Eleganza" is a good thing, but honestly? Sometimes I just want to dress to have fun.
Never had time to worry about what other people think.
I got lots of comments for it but I learned to ignore them... especially when I realized that a few years later those same people were wearing the very same clothes they teased me for AHAHAHAH

Here guys are REALLY into trap these days so brands like Nike, Adidas, Fila, Kappa, Vans, Puma the north face ect are so big rn (even luxury brands Gucci in particular, even tho they cant afford them) guys even wear retro/women sunglasses! Miniskirts are coming back.
Eastpack backpacks is what everyone has at school.
Also shoes play a huge role, fancy weird big shoes like NIKE, Fila. It's even better if the color of shoes and clothes is unique. Vintage stuff is a trend too for both males and females. Must have big jeans but also skinny, but NO jegging(IF LEVIS IS WAY BETTER)

what I'd like to add is that most italian millennials are broke AF so they only shop at H&M, Zara and such and when you don't have much money to spend you just play safe and go for jeans and t-shirts and spend more on shoes. so we may even love fashion (as I do) but we usually wear simple, classic things. so I feel it's generally hard for us to create a unique, different style so we just go for the things we find in the most popular stores

One particular topic on your video caught my attention. You say that the luxury brand accessories, like belts and bags, are now everywhere to be seen. I’ve also noticed this trend in other countries. My question for you is: do you believe that in a country hit by an economic crisis, like Italy, all those expensive bags and belts seen on the streets are original? Is the luxury brand market really booming?

As i rad in other comments, “italian style” change city by city. If you come to Naples you can see a lots of people following the Americans way of wearing: here people wants to declare themselves and to show their bodies, so everything is more “volgare”. Means this that everyone is individualistic? No, cause a lot of people choose classic/ elegantly clothes. I think that from Rome going down the boot, everyone sees him/her self as something that is unique. So there are unique classic people, unique sportive ones, unique “cafone” ones. Be in the Italian style means understand all of them and choose witch one is the one you fill in. At the end you’re in the Italian mode if you look beautiful, without not-matching colors and, in unique way, not so far away from the standards (of every single sub-stile).

  • @chanthamala8
