- What really are the main difference with American fashion and Italian (European) fashion? Here are some of my observations :) Do you agree or disagree?

+sofia sofi sofi sofi Ahahah mi hai fatto morire ahahah
HAHAHAHAHAHA
Important thing: gym clothes. While in America yoga pants and sweat pants are somehow even trendy, in Italy and Europe in general it'sa HUGE no no!
But if they wear them they also wear them very differently. In America they're visibly gym wear. In Europe they seems to have certain rules for jeggings & yoga pants, e.g. black and a longer top covering the butt.
here in italy animal prints are considered "low" Class and Not elegant at all :-)
+Alice Costantini hahahah I understand now xD
+Tia Taylor or For Very brave people :-*
+Alice Costantini true!!!
+Alice Costantini very true :D
+Tia Taylor please, make a video about the crazy hair cuts of Milanesi guys! Even people from other parts of Italy find those funky haircuts a bit over the top, LOL! Whereas I find that Americans just trim their head with a trimmer and that's it.
I'm Italian and I don't get all this comments complaining about your video, saying things like "We're not like that" "Fashion changes from city to city" "All you've said it's wrong" and what else.. First. Tia's saying her opinion from what she has seen in America and what she sees here in Italy, and, as it's a peacefull opinion, can we please calm the f* down and respect it? She's making videos of her expirience here from her view, so relax! Second. Stop saying that that's not like that, because it is: here in Italy, every where you go, fashion is important, and, if not fashion, the way you dress up is. I'm one of those who doesn't give a damn about what they wear, but sure I get anxiety every time I have to go to the city and I don't really know what to wear (mind that I live in Pisa, nothing compared to Milan). Third. As everywhere in the world, people have different tastes, but Tia says good when she says that here people are more "elegant" and, for other nations (she says about America), over done (???) with it. It's true! For ex. i don't wear sweatpants out of my house, and I'm not even one of those fashion girl always in lit. Anyway, I don't know how long she's here and how many cities she has seen, but saying things like "in THIS place is not like that" "in THAT place neither" is stupid.. WO no one said she was talking about ALL Italy - every city in specific, but she was talking about what she has seen. STOP.
Anyway, Tia.. Hope you enjoyed this time in Italy and hope you'll enjoy it untill you remain! Have a good live here! And hope you'll make other videos like this, they're really interesting!
I came to notice that American fashion industry encourages you to wear what you like no matter what your body type is, whereas in Italy you get certain socially-imposed limits, especially if you are curvy: no tight clothes, don't overexpose your body. Not to talk about getting judged by the lenght of your skirt/depth of your cleveage/hight of your heels. It might not be the case in a big city such as Milan, but we girls still have a lot of fighting ahead of us on these matters 💪
+Belladonna Took I agree!
so true :(
+Belladonna Took Maybe but we do this for the right reason...
every body is different so because wear clothes that are not suitable for your body?
There are men and women who are comfortable with everything.. others no.
Just accept it and find the right style without making fools of themselves.
We call this Buongusto.
Sry for my Eng, I hope that my concept is clear.
+lazios here comes the paternalistic, catholic mindset, taking decisions for others. Typical. Provincialismo all the way. "Buon gusto" is an idea that has been imposed to CONTROL people's behaviour, particularly women's, and speak on their behalf. "Non mettere scarpe col tacco e minigonna, è di cattivo gusto perché sei cicciona" - who says that? Why do you have to limit people's freedom of choice? Those who suggest what's right or wrong to wear are THE SAME who make people feel uncomfortable for what they are wearing or what they look like. It's such a fucked up system and sadly you are applying it, consciously or not.
+Belladonna Took You can actually dress as you wish, but that doesn't mean that other people will appreciate it. If they don't like it they will say it's not "buon gusto". As you can sing a song that you like and enjoy singing it, but other people will say you're out of tune and suck. As long as you want to, you can also dress like a heavy metal singer on your wedding. I'm not an expert in fashion or anything but I'm pretty sure the "buon gusto" style comes from certain proportion rules used generally in classic art.
I'm also pretty sure that in 2016 being catholic doesn't count so much in how you dress, lots of other countries are catholic and they dress very differently from how people dress in Italy. (South America, Spain, Portugal, France etc...)
Ahahhahahahaha
ma AHAHAH. hai vinto.
PUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Risvoltini stile "ho l'acqua in casa"
Sei bellissima comunque, ciao ☆
I think it depends on what region of the States you live in.. Miami style is very different from NYC or LA..
+It's Kells at least those places have some style. Michigan in general, tend to have a very hipster and general hobo look.
Yeah, I'm originally from Miami so the style is good, but usually very tight, sexy and showing skin.. depends on taste really. New York style is a bit more elegant.
New York is more edgy vs elegant
+Divine Domino it depends on where you are in New York
+It's Kells Fashion in Miami is one of the worse thing i have seen in my entire life. You can not talk about style. You can only talk about "Random Hype Clothes".
Hair twins! Also, you hit the nail with this. Italian fashion extends into the UK too haha
+Uche Nwaokocha
I liked this video! You make very valid points:)
It would be nice to go more in-depth around different parts of Italy and the difference between the various age-appropriate styles that are used in Italy. For example, a 60 year old woman in Milan will dress differently from a 17 year old both in Milan and elsewhere. And American fashion is being adopted by highschoolers, which is interesting to me! Also, the fact that you rarely catch an Italian girl wearing leggings without a longer top or coat.
I'd love to see part 2! ;)
Xoxo
ciao Tia!
Molto interessante, grazie ;) it's always interesting hearing what foreigners who live here in Italy think about us fashion wise (and I also really liked how you drew a line between Italian daily fashion and Italian runway fashion- smart!). Nuova iscritta, mi piace molto il tuo canale :))
I'm Italian and I love your channel! Your videos are very interesting
fashion trends here in Italy change drastically almost every year, especially among teenagers, and it even "evolves" trough the same season, if you observe closely, i find thid really fascinating. and it's true, most of us leave the house only after putting lots of thought in putting our outfits together, and it doesn't have to be anxiety-provoking or a struggle, it's just a natural process: checking the weather and your mood, and considering where you are going to choose what you're going to wear, even for the ones who mostly don't follow trends, like me, it's important to look presentable and appropriate :)
Italians also iron their clothes. That is the real reason that they often look crisp. A lot of Italian women do wear heels a lot, but just thicker ones. It's rare to find stilettos in normal, non high fashion shoe stores. Milanese wear a lot of black, but in "provincia" you will see people wearing a lot more color. Milan is like Paris, New York, etc where black and low shoes are a staple. Outside of Milan, it's very car based as well. Already in Rome, you will see a difference in the way women dress compared to Milan. You will see more heels and more women dressed sexy, but not vulgar. Outside of Milan I find it very rare to find a whole bunch of people always dressed in black. I see more navy, or browns, kaki, beige, etc. In places like Bologna, you see a lot of young people wearing bright, fashionable sneakers though.
+cinnabun 3 I can agree with this because for example in fano the look is more laid back and colorful but still not as bright as back home.. the colors here arn't so much neutral but still more muted, like you said. I agree with your points! I honestly was afraid of making this video because fashion is so different from region to region both in Italy and the states so it was hard to kind of sum it up in one video but hey, people will read comments like this and get the full picture :) thank you!
You're right. I live in Italy, and we always have to be 'perfect' for every occasion. For example, I don't like to wear suits or colored leggings even if I was going to throw the garbage.
Italian girls usually put on large sweaters, black leggings, black, blue and gray jeans, boots. In short, neutral clothing.
And, i think you noticed, you can see a lot of girls wearing the same jacket or the same shoes.
i'm italy and my friends, for go to school, wear dresses or something elegant, not for me. I wear clothes more comfortable like jeans or something, and my mum always say that i had to be born in America. LOL. i'd like be born in America. I love America soo much!
love this video. Send you a kiss
Really liked this video!
And I general I do appreciate all your USA VS Italy videos, they're interesting.
Still waiting for this kind of video about food and food habits. :D
Cheers, from Rome!
+Emuity I'll add it to my list ;D Thanks for watching!
Ciao from Milan!
I can relate to this videos so much. I was living in Spain and I moved to Canada about a year ago and I felt the same. Coming from an European country I saw that people here (in Canada) are more casual and practical and when they try to dress up more "elegant" they tend to go for a sexy look whereas in Spain people plays more with fashion, different styles and proportions. In my opinion you don't need to dress sexy to look more dressed up.
Great video btw 😊
I am Italian and i think you are the only person so far that has come the closest to explain the differences. Good job.
I feel like you're right, talking in general about society.
But also it depends on the environment you're into. If you'll ever hop by a design school/ design workplace, you'll see craaaazy stuff going on.
Nice and assertive video. Well done analysis but you certainly missed one point of difference which is the main cause of everything you said: Italy is firstly the craddle of "costume" and only secondly the one of "design and fashion". Do not evaluate ITalian fashion without considering the strong relationship it has with colture, social classes, political views. We are used to expressing ourselves and to communicating throughout our outfits since the Middle Age. Fashion is something which built its bases on something pre-existing, "il costume" indeed. US people developed fashion only in its commercial side (e.g tom ford, kors, etc). Italians make it evolve from pure colture. Overall, that's the reason why people are likely to judge others based on fashion: we were used to that in the past: Rich /poors / borgoise/ army / priests / industrials /workers/ politicians. On costume for each person.
I think you've got such a great ability to catch what's around you without judging. You're curious and it's great. The only thing I can suggest is to do many many trips across the country 'cause we're italians change so much depending on the county we come from and it's our greatest characteristic. Keep going girl :)
Spesso contrapposta. Ti do un suggerimento: Attiva i sottotitoli in italiano.
I am an Italian who lived in America years ago, I can tell you're so right especially about the elegant thing. When I was in America everyone kept telling me that I was dressing so fancy, but for me I was just wearing everyday clothes!
Nice video anyway, hope you will enjoy my little Italy.
This is very interesting. Have an Italian colleague who always dresses crisp.
+Flairelle They iron their clothes most of the time. it makes a huge difference.
+cinnabun 3 we iron our clothes in the states too :) or at least I was taught to
cinnabun 3 thats not what I mean. I mean very classy with some edge. I am from the Caribbean and we always iron too. I am in France. I have my own style and most times I feel over dressed but it is sure that the French are not fancy like italians. Very laid back at least where I live.
I know what you mean. I'm in France too, and lived in Italy. What I mean is that they iron, yet it is not stiff. They wear it naturally. It can be a t-shirt with jeans, edgy, but worn in a "cleaner" crisp type of way. I work in fashion and I've always observed this difference. Somehow Italians will just throw and wrap a scarf on, whereas a French women will very often "arrange" it in a beautiful way, A lot has to do with the quality of the clothes as well. compared to the average American.
loved this video Tia! I love the fact that you have lived in two different countries which has different styles but still adapt to them easily!
great analysis tia love the way ure documenting your experiences throughout this journey
Agreed! Especially considering black color. Black color - fashion color in Italy.
That's one thing I can appreciate about American fashion is that pretty much anything goes. I live in NYC and you can see one person dressed in casual/comfortable attire walking next to someone else dressed up in formal or fashionable clothing and no one seems to mind. I will say that (even in NYC) there still exists a negative stigma towards men who dress in form fitting clothing. I can only imagine its much worse outside NYC.
I live in Europe. You are on point! :))
+SeaBlue1976 every country is different :)
+Kevin A of course I just notice a lot of things she said are quite accurate ;)
SeaBlue1976 about Italy sure! But for example in France (I am italian-french) is already different than here.. this is what i mean :)
I'm moving to Rome in a few weeks to start my freshman year of college. I've been stalking your videos the past few months and they've been such a huge help🙌🏽
you really are accurate about these differences,we tend to be so "obsessive" about our look cause we love to criticize other people's look(or at least here in Milan),in fact we always do it with tourists, and don't tell me it's not true, the German with white socks and sandals is an institution here in ItalyXD
in Milano if you see people in center like piazza duomo are all elegant 'cause of their social status (or it is what it seems to me), but in other places of Milano during the day most of people are all well dressed 'cause of work etiquette...
I wish I could live in Italy i bet its beautiful!
+JeffandKeturah ngl it is! 😍
Si fra
...Tia, remember you live in Milan! In other parts of Italy we're not that elegant and fancy. Visit Bologna and you'll see
+amareggiate Even Bologna is for sure fancier than your average American city
In new york you have EVERY TYPE. They have punk, grungy, sporty, conservative, pretty. You name it and they have it hahaha. But in my experiences most other places in the US are more laid back and casual. People dont always care what they look like. Miami and vegas tend to be more revealing for sure. I cant say much about california but my impression from those californians who come to nyc is that it totally depends on the city in cali.
Hi! First of all I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy watching your videos! I'm an Italian 20yo girl (from Cagliari) and I actually live in Arlington, VA and work as an au pair. I just watched this one with a friend of mine, and suddenly stopped it because I felt weird about something. When you said that in the US people like to "show" as much skin as they can, I noticed a weird thing about how American women get dress for the beach/pool. After they have kids, or they start to "get old" (I'm talking about girls in the 30s, that are still really young to me!) they ALL use really covering swimsuits. I was talking to my friend here and I'm going to write what I exactly said. (I apologize for the language) "Ma se qui usano i costumi interi! MA CHE CAZZO ME NE FREGA A ME?!"
I completely agree about heels! I live in Florence and it's really difficult to walk around in high heels...I have tons of them but I barely use them:(
Tia you forgot to mention that while in the States people go out wearing their flip-flops (with socks!), in Italy that's a big no! Flip-flops are for the beach, and no sock are ever involved lol Nice video!
*Love hearing your take on this! I'm still trying to find my style!*
Hi Tia, another informative video
Not until I watched this video did I start noticing the fashion differences between Italians/Europeans and Americans. I agree Europeans/Italians have great fashion style, it' s simple yet chic and I American fashion is more relaxed and comfy.
Wow, that is why it's so great to travel and live in different countries, because you can experience different cultures and people which in turn will make you more open accepting of people who are different from yourself.
I've been to the states only for 2 months and a half but I totally agree with what you say, especially with the fact that clothes here in Italy fit better and that people prefer more neutral colors... I'm a tall person and surprisingly enough it was hard for me to find jeans in America. The problem was to only the length but especially the way they fitted on the waist and the tights... I didn't like the was the jeans were sewed. You're right about the animal prints too, even though there are some exceptions. Last month my best friend bought a pair of shoes with animal print. After I got used to them I started to think that they were pretty sweet and funny. Yet again, they were only a small extra detail added to a quite sober outfit... =)
As Italian I can say there's a huge different between Italian adults and Italian teenager. Adults usually wear more fashion as you explained, but teens use to wear comfortable with sneakers, leggins and so on. Anyway I find your videos really interesting and I see things I didn't before, thanks to you!
I'm italian but i prefer american mentality
For me we judge too much the people by their appearence
Sara Menegatti totally agree Italians are very superficial
I prefer more Italian mentality as it’s closer to my culture
Adoro i tuoi video. Sei favolooosa. Ciao ;)
A- You will see animal print when is trendy, not when you want.
B- Average Italians families have at least 3 cars( if you are studing away from home is normal not having one)
C- Italians are extremely influenced by Bloggers especially lately
D- Ambulances are common in all main roads
I'm cute in America lol... I feel basic AF in Europe. 😭
+_red_ princess *quartieri popolari
As an Italian living in Milan I can say that your consideration are very on point. Good job!
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE ITALIAN AMERICAN SERIES
+Peabo Brown :D I have a few more video ideas up my sleeve
YAYYY
Excellent Review! You are amazing sweetheart!!🌈Your observations are on point Honey Bun.🌈
Comunque mi piacciono moltissimo i tuoi video! Iscritta :)
It's quite obvious when you travel in Italy and meet Italian people that an average Italian isn't strikingly elegant, trendy or anything like that. It's more like worn out t-shirts, funny glasses, occasionally an ugly tattoo, messy hair ecc. Just like everywhere. There are of course people who put more effort to the way they dress and it obviously depends on the situation, but on average there's little difference. This is of course something that Italians never admit and they seem to be completely stuck with this stereotype, as the comments below show.
you're so right! I'm Italian, i live in Verona, and i agree with pretty much everything you said!
In Italy people don't follow fashion bloggers, they suppose to be ALL fashion bloggers
Pretty accurate analysis. Every time I go abroad people would say "wow you look so crispy" while here I look more like a bum (of course with the same identical clothes on)
According to the other comments, I like how you found the differences between Italian and American fashion. It's always nice to see the lots of point of view of two different countries :)
Great video Tia i rocked my leopard print dress few days ago. I know the feeling and attention you get but it doesn't mean that you must wear italian fashion only when living here, it is all about your confidence and how you feel about what you are wearing.. I really like Italian high fashion and at the same time i still have a heart for African & American fashion. so yeah here is the link if you wish to see what i was wearing
Comunque sei fantastica, divertiti a Milano!
*-* i totally agree with you , great 😉
+MarWy Fox Ma certo, non so come mai ogni volta all'estero si ha sempre l'immagine d'italiani super eleganti, non siamo mica tutti Prada . 😂
in centre of Milan you find people that are elegant, but also people with air max, karl kani and baseball team's hat or shirt... i think in Italy you Can find a lot of different "style" and the people usually mix Nike with Armani ( for example)
sorry for my english
That leopard print blazer looks very good on you. I have this "glamour" friend who usually wears one. Keep wearing it. Basta abbinarlo bene
As an italian girl who has lived in the USA I can say that I totally agree with the differences that you noticed
Pecore omologate.
I'm Italian and I live in Milan and yesss it's true that there are lots of girls who always want to be 'on point' and seem not to be able to leave their house without perfect hair and fashion clothes but there are also millions of very very low key(?) girls who can even go out the night with leggins, big sweaters and ruined supergas on... it's Italy ahahahah: plenty of contrasts
you should make video on the best places to shop for clothes high end and every day like things you can't find in America
Please, don't take people in Milano as how Italians usually dress. I am from northern Italy and I noticed that only there, if Milano, people constantly dress as they were about to be photographed. In other towns, teens and young adults are much more chill about their outfits. Btw I just love your videos, you just gained a subscriber!
I agree with you especially with trends. And I think that the fashion in Milan (street fashion) is different than the fashion in Rome, but is just my opinion dunno...
I'm Italian and I really enjoyed your video.I think the Italian fashion and the great designers of the big Italian brands are fabulous, despite this, unfortunately many Italian people have no taste, and dress really bad.I'm so curious to know which italian brand you prefer!
I like to hear the differences between the American and Italian fashion:)
i like your channel :)
This was such a cool video! I'm trying to learn Italian now and watching this really inspires me to keep going
Can someone give me an example of party-appropriate shoes that make sense for cobble stone and moderate amounts walking?
Sheriseologie ankle boots or some nice ballerina flats!
"She won't wear no heels"? Lol that's perhaps the only occasion in which Americans use the double negative. I don't think British people ever say that :-)
+Valeria Cao i sometimes code switch for immediate effect but that was slag/improper grammar and shouldn't be used in serious occasions
In my school, girls dress very fashionable and fun. We don't usually dress as casual as you're saying. You come from one area of America, don't generalize
Which is terrible, for the Italian culture. It's an injury
Sei simpaticissima!
The main differences between Italy and America is the numbers of multibrands indipendent stores we have here...
That means more research in brands, Designers and trends, in US department stores as Macys exc. rule the market and the majority of peoples think that fashion means Ralph Lauren or Tommy Hilfiger.....i think somenthing is changing there but we are way far at the moment...Major fashion Brands as Gucci, Prada, Dolce&Gabbana exc. are today just for Chinese and Russians.....You've got to go to Bologna all trends especially the alternatives one born and raised there...........imho........
Two of the strongholds of Italian mentality and culture are 1. aesthetics and 2. personal dignity. It's what is commonly called "bella figura". My impression is that Italians want to avoid to make fools of themselves, unless they do it on purpose (e.g. to make you laugh).
Tia your videos are always so interesting! and I found out some american fashion details I didn't know ;)
un bacio,
Eva :*
I think Americans dress somewhat conservatively because I know you have lots of conservative rules in schools. Dress codes like no tank tops, no crop tops, or no short skirts/shorts even if it's super hot weather. Isn't this true? Maybe you dress revealingly outside school? I know in Sweden people wear pretty much the same clothes whether it's school or not.
Sara Nordström yeah your right about the dress code thats why I wear sweatpants and hoodies cause i dont time for teacher be like your showing your shoulders 😂 but thats me
i think every italian citties has its own fashion... if u love in milan which is the fashion capital of italy and house of luxury brands like DOLCE e GABBANA,PRADA,ARMANI,FENDI,GUCCI,VERSACE... you see people are more stilish than american, english and other people around the world.. i think you have never visited MILAN probably!!!
I live in Milan.
Tia Taylor probably the people you know are not stylish at all.. i think americans are less stylish than italians...the people i know wear really nice and fashionable clothes and italian fashion is classy compared to other nationalities... italian men are the most sylish men in the world , in my opionion... probably you refere to new generation people( teneagers) in that case you could be right they have no dressing sense and are obsessed with american and english tastes... but italian adults have the classical italian style, we are not obsessed with anything that has to do with UK or AMERICA!
BOGO CHATU She didn't say you were upset ...you sound butt hurt
Jenna Brook this is the reality italian teenagers wear horrendous clothes which are typically american or english, while adults are fashionable and wear high quality dress..especially if you live in milan!!
BOGO CHATU My point is she didn't say that you guys were obsessed with American fashion but anyway I really don't care because I love American fashion and find Italian fashion kind of plain and predictable. But I love the Italian people
