Displaced: How Criminalization Keeps a Veteran Homeless
Vložit

- "Displaced" takes viewers to Columbia, Missouri, where Ray, a homeless veteran, struggles under a new state law that criminalizes homelessness. The film starts with a poignant scene of Ray being displaced during a sweep, an action now legitimized by state legislation. As Ray scrambles to salvage his belongings, the documentary underscores the harsh measures of this law, showing sanitation workers and law enforcement in action.
The narrative exposes the flawed approach of penalizing homelessness instead of addressing its root causes like poverty and inadequate housing. Ray's interactions with city officials, police, and other homeless people reveal a system more focused on criminalizing the vulnerable than helping them.
Set against Columbia's urban backdrop, "Displaced" critiques the criminalization of homelessness and its impact, highlighting how such policies fail to tackle the underlying issues. It calls for a shift towards compassionate, supportive solutions that provide real help to those like Ray. The film is a powerful plea for rethinking how society deals with homelessness, emphasizing empathy over punishment.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Being a Homeless Veteran for 10yrs if any of you think it's easy it's not. Nobody cares about our situation but Mark and our organization called "NaVu for short. If Mark reads our comments. Tell you this. I'm a Service Connected Disabled Veteran and I'm taking names to sue everyone involved for three things pertaining to the illegal law making homeless a crime. I know the Senator's names that signed the bill. Let's hold them all accountable. I'm sick and tired of what we're facing because of them all. Every Senator in the Congress and House are responsible for our homelessness.
Sorry you are homeless. Glad you are taking action.
I care too💓
Glad you are full buying this inhuman laws!
Nobody is responsible for your plight in life but yourself! You cannot believe this is good for you. There seems to be plenty of money for illegal immigrants and the homeless problem but, only the immigrants are smart enough to take advantage of it!
If you’re a disabled veteran then I’m sure you’re receiving disability payments from the VA so why are you living on the street? I know guys working full time jobs collecting 💯 disability for hearing loss from the VA
@Mike-tu7uw Homelessness has less to do with money and more to do with lifestyle. Mental illness and drug abuse are the most common problem. Even if offered housing, many people prefer living on the street. We must concentrate on those who need housing the most, parents with children, and move outward. We're spending too much for too little!
I live in Canada. This type of thing happened in my community once and people were outraged. Has not happened since. This is shameful
Canada's definitely a more civilized country if that's true. That, along with free medical care, are examples to follow for the U.S. but they won't and they don't.
Hey there, ditilley. Me,too, fellow Canadian. In Vancouver. I noticed in your comment - this happened once where you live..only once? One too many times! Were the right outraged? Like politicians, ones with hearts? I see jerry below, his comment about Canada is more civilized, etc. I don’t know about you, but thots about that is, no sadly, too too many Canadians are homeless or close to it. Cost of living doesn’t match with any liveable wages, young middle old senior, it is all shitty. And, again depending where you live ditilley, but i see more every year how Canada’s enabling the 2 tier med. system, forcing one to have med. insurance.....ugg i am so sorry to dump on you like this......this was so well done, wasn’t it? My heart starting cracks in first few minutes.... i hope things and life are good for you, to you. Bev. in Vancouver
@bevgordon7619 I also reside in British Columbia, approximately a 6 hour drive north of Vancouver. I was recently medevacced down to St. Pauls hospital back in February 2024 to figure out what was happening with my defibrillator. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw firsthand how out- of-control the drug pandemic is. My curiosity got the best of me when I looked into the homelessness issue in the DTES on CZcams. I was appalled at what I saw...I used to hang around in the E. Hastings & Pigeon park area back in the late 80's, early 90's. This issue was never this bad until the pandemic hit everywhere & the rising costs of living went thru the roof. I was heartbroken to watch the way that the homeless Veterans are being mistreated on the streets, especially by the city employees hired to sweep these "illegal encampment." NO compassion or empathy whatsoever. 😢
Humans need shelters. Crazy country we all live in.
💯
Just remember all the illegals crossing the border are getting tax payer paid for hotel says and $10,000 debt cards to help them be comfortable
Humans as you say are responsible for themselves. Grow up
Let them come camp out in your yard for a while.
There are no places to live that is affordable, the ultra rich have bought up the world and are responsible for it's ills.
This should really be a true story on Netflix
And yes, you can definitely spread the word that Loveland, CO doesn’t care about the homeless!!!
Too bad isn't it? Shows a lot about their character.
Colorado . Dose not care I spent ten yrs homeless in Greeley they don't want to admit they have a problem
Our country in general does not care about its homeless. People are now just acknowledging it since the illegals are getting housing instead of their own citizens. Homeless were stigmatized as all drug users or mentally ill and that is BS. But I guess it made it easier to ignore then
Actually the problem is your Senators and Chamber councilman. They get money yearly to end homelessness but they're using the money for kickbacks to their friends who are running scams on the homeless people of Oregon
4 year waiting list to be in a lottery for housing that starts building in 4 years. Boulder County Shelter 10 years ago. I worked for IBM and I'm still homeless.
The majority of us could join them on the streets with one life event. How terrifying to be so vulnerable and powerless. 🙏🏻😔💕
I went from a million dollar house to being homeless in ten minutes thanks to a false temporary restraining order from my wife after she physically abused my 5 year old daughter. It can happen to anyone. She got me fired from my job as well (covert narcissist). I'm still dealing with it.

What someone needs to do is make a legal challenge to set a precedent and even scrap the law.
Trying to keep warm and dry is not a crime. Its not a crime to give yourself the best chance of survival.
There already is a law - _Martin v. City of Boise_ that says you cannot criminalize homelessness
Get everyone together that has received tickets and file a class action Federal lawsuit against your state Senators!

I bet that there’s a lot of vacant abandoned buildings that could be renovated by the housing authority and allow these homeless people in this video to live inside the buildings and the housing authority can have a cost sharing agreement with them.
Dear one.. As I say this.. I am. Fighting back tears. The governments have been infiltrated by a bad filthy rich gang... Yes rich Trump is a traitor. They are doing all this and we will all be slaves one day... Is their plans.
But Jesus will end this mess soon. 🎉
And yes.. The homeless problems could be helped dramatically... Many good ideas that is much cheaper etc but that is not their plans.
Maybe heavily tax unused properties to encourage the owners to do something with them?
I have a homeless friend, its so complicated, I try to help him, but its so hard. I feel guilty. But Im mad that the US is trying to send billions to Israel... to make more people homeless😢 CEOs gettung rich making fighter jets but no funding to convert a motel for the homeless in my town...ughhhh
Super glad that you do not throw up your hands but make a film and raise awareness, thanks for your good work. I've been very moved by the interviews on the street with homeless folk, so much compassion shown. Inspires me to keep helping.
Hey, maybe just a small outside room for your friend? And outhouse.. Hole in the ground for a urinal. A small shack room where there will be maximum privacy for you.. That might actually work to help your friend?
"What so ever you do to the least of these my brethren, you do to me." Jesus

If the "supreme" court makes homelessness illegal and at least 1 of our 2 presidential candidates has his way we will see Americans moved against their will into "camps". America? Reminds me of other times and places. Thank you for this wonderful piece, great acting and directing especially with the limitations you had to work with.
Homeless camps are what they are called now!
They already have pre built camps. They are called Prisons and County jails. That is why they want to make homelessness illegal.
Camps cost money. FEMA camps are a myth. Our Government doesn't want to pay for camps. Money allotted to homeless is invested into camp removals and homeless diverting. Why no bathrooms? They don't want to pay someone to clean them.
Our Government puts tiny bandaids on broken things that we call homeless.
Dialog and story is on point. Keep pushing out and experimenting on content. Yall doing a good thing.
Thank you

My deepest and most sincere prayers for these people. They aren’t invisible to all of us! Where are the most vulnerable people in our society supposed to go when there are no options left?
In Honolulu from what I've observed is most of the homeless are disabled. The one man with no feet from diabetes lives in his wheelchair in front of the ER. He told me he can't get medical insurance because his wallet with his ID was stolen. So he lives in front of the ER because the law says the ER 's have to treat everyone who comes in. The 80 year old man in a tent a block from me. He said he gets social security but it's not enough for even a studio. He's on the waiting list for a low income subsided apartment but there's a six year wait. He's already 80. The list just goes on and on.
От чего же его не помещают в дом для престарелых - инвалидов?
There but for the grace of God go I. This moved me to tears. The actor Keith Nussbaum, who played Carl, was superb.
The people in authority in Colombia, Missouri are being unsympathetic about the plight of the homeless people who need affordable housing; and I’m sure that there’s a housing authority in Colombia that should work with the Mayor to help those who are homeless living outside.
I wish you the best
It is immoral this disparity of wealth . I am ashamed of us in this regard .we can do better .the price of obscene poverty is the cost of obscene wealth .

Rich people would like it if we all died.
No. They need us for cheap labor. The system is set up so that 99% of us must work for peanuts making rich people richer in order to pay the company store (rent, utilities, food and transportation) and if they think too many of us are catching up they raise the prices at the company store.
Why harass these folks ?
All states have national guard units that can be activated and tent’s put up in a day to a week on state or federal land used for training if the state governor ordered it.
America the Beautiful and Powerful came to this conclusion. Hard to believe but the picture says it all.

Everyone matters to God, every sinhle one.🙏🙏🙏
Tell that to the FILTH making these laws and misleading the public about the context.
Tell that to the INHUMANE "people" in these areas that voted for it.
Tell that to be thousands of homeless people that die every day while you sit on your phone and type about how God loves everybody meanwhile churches sit empty 90% of the time when they could be housing them.
Tell that to the millions of people who die every year because hopes and prayers is all anyone ever sends.
God doesn't factor in here. God's love doesn't feed you. Hopes and prayers don't keep you warm when temperatures are dropping below freezing.
If everyone mattered to God there wouldn't be so much hate in people's hearts that they see this happening in their area and can ignore it or encourage it.
Fighting Back ..I Love it ..the Truth hurts ....and so much Suffering ... hope this AWAKES some folks ... We have to CARE ....For the Grace of GOD go I
This is sure a video I'm glad Mark and his video production guys got out here on CZcams, to raise more awareness on the criminalization of homelessness. I really couldn't help feeling angry for those homeless people, when I watched it. It really made me glad that in the chorus of my Criminalization Of Homelessness Must Stop song I got the lines, I hate every day that the cities got the galls, judging people for not having a ceiling and four walls, when they push the homeless around can't help shaking my fist, instead of help all they offer is just a waiting list. There's one of the past Invisible People videos I'm glad I watched when it comes to that last chorus line, because when Mark said in the video instead of help all they offer is a waiting list, I thought yeah that will make a good line to have after the third chorus line, when they push the homeless around can't help shaking my fist. It just came to my mind that it would probably be better to change that to clenching my fist.

Homelessness SHOULD be a crime but not on the part of the homeless. The criminal would be the county/city/ etc that allow people to be homeless. Make the fines so harsh that affordable housing is cheaper to build.

@@Kerry-ft2zf Last I checked, a rich guy didn't murder people at the convenience stores near me. Last I checked, a rich guy didn't bust all the shop windows down a strip of several blocks. Last I checked, my neighbors didn't lose their daughter to a rich guy who kidnapped her when she was outside playing. These were all homeless people, and I could list a lot more, but I think I've made my point. This is the reality on the ground, not some theorized rich boogey man a thousand miles away pulling levers, but real reality.
I've been insulted by homeless people, I've been attacked by homeless people. I saw a person once who had a "will work for food" sign, so you know what I did? I went home, filled a big bag full of food, from a sub sandwich to bananas, fruit cups, soda, water, crackers, condiment packages, wet wipes, socks, and more.....I went back and handed it to them. They looked in the bag and you know what they said to me? "Can I just have some money instead?". I've seen several different people use the same "I'm a veteran, spare some change?" sign. They just drop it at the street corner in the bushes, and whoever comes along picks it up and starts using it. I've seen all of this and more. I have very extensive direct experience with the homeless, every single day. Not just driving past them in a car, but on the street, in person.
@peoplez129 you need to look into what ppl like Klaus Schwab, Anthony Fauci and Bill Gates are up to. I promise you, rich elites are much worse for your health than poor ppl. The plans they have in place are becoming a reality, within the next 5 years you'll easily see this with your own eyes.

So sad. I'm homeless too, but at least I have a car to sleep in. Same fascist attacks in Australia for decades now, due to the exhorbitant rent rises in the early 2000s because of low interest rates, and then there were many people including whole familes sleeping in their cars, and so the councils made laws to get rid of them. Them now means us.
Good news is that some are speculating that the recent earthquakes in Taiwan might be CCP military technology. Hopefully China, or maybe Russia, (but please not Iran), will defeat the USA and the rest of the so-called western world fascists and bring some humanity back to our lives. Throwing all their stuff away should be a crime. You know what my fundamental problem is with harassing the homeless? Its basically the forced monetization of every single thing. You apparently dont have a right to own anything unless you pay a for-profit business to store it for you. Its forcing people to pay for things that should be a granted right. If they buy an RV, their only option is to PAY a for profit RV park to stay in their own property. What does "public" even mean then? I sleep in my SUV regularly when traveling, and it annoys me endlessly that police always harass me. No matter where i park.

Homelessness isn't a crime but, drug dealing, pitching tents everywhere, littering, alcohol abuse, theft, urinating and defcating in public etc. is. Have you seen a homeless camp without a mountain of garbage around it? Setting up these camps isn't good for the homeless or area residents. Most of the homeless need assistance. Veterans can get help. Most dont want help but, government needs to force it on them!
Did you even watch the video?
@InvisiblePeople Why? My comment is a general one. Homelessness is good for no one! Government can do more with the billions they spend on it but, they're too busy giving illegals fat checks!

There's lots of homeless people in Australia, more so now because of the higher rents etc.
In real life, there are cat and kittens who get killed in these sweeps. They get trapped in tents and thrown away and crushed by bulldozers.
And the veterans hav a friend but what I bout the rest of the people.
It’s not safe to be alone and the nabor hood watch follows them around and calls the police
PS. See some comments about VA benefits and disability from ppl who never served and are not part of the system. If 50% disabled you might get enough to buy a bottle of water. If you don't know, just stfu and stop picking on homeless vets in the street.
The state has to pay for it's crimes against the people.
I agree 💯 👍 homeless nowhere to go really...... I mean ya live on the streets....soooooo your going to be walking around, sitting on a bench, etc., is that a crime noooo az long as your not the criminal element 🇺🇸🗽
Displaced: When Surviving Homelessness is a Crime - Shitting on the sidewalk, throwing used needles on the ground, setting fire to their own tent cities, and having the taxpayers pay for the clean up. It sounds like the crime is against the local taxpayers.
Hmmmmm, people shit on the sidewalk because they don’t have bathrooms. Most people use drugs inside their apartments. You don’t see it because they have walls. Don’t want to see needles? Help support housing. Pushing homeless people to another city and then that city pushes homeless people back all while homelessness is growing is literally insane. Soon, there will be homeless people in every sidewalk - including where you live. Is that what you want? Then keep supporting criminalization of poverty.
@@InvisiblePeople So the local taxpayers should provide porta potties for the homeless? I think the local jail provides bathrooms and drug rehabilitation. Most people use legal drugs inside the house they are paying for. They are not asking other people to pay for their lifestyle.
In California, it’s $132,000+ per inmate per year. Sure - open up your bank account to the government to pay for more jails. That’s a smart move
@@InvisiblePeople Or we could have them picking crops and learning a work ethic. They may not want to come back to prison.
