  • Without access to affordable housing, low-income older adults are forced onto the streets. Homelessness is on the rise in Nashville, Tenn. Between 2022 and 2023, there's been an 11% increase among those experiencing homelessness. Many of these individuals are over the age of 50, and they are experiencing health conditions decades earlier than their housed neighbors. At the heart of the problem is a lack of affordable housing, and low-income people are paying the price.

    ▬▬ About Aging Matters ▬▬
Since they were born, members of the Baby Boomer generation have played a big role in shaping American culture. In 2011, the first of the boomers turned 65. As they age, the vast number of people entering their senior years will undoubtedly have an impact on how our communities understand and respond to the needs of older citizens. By the year 2020, Tennessee's population of people between the ages 65-74 is expected to grow by almost 48%.
Aging Matters is a community-based conversation about what older citizens in Middle Tennessee need to optimize their quality of life and how the community needs to prepare for our aging population. The series focuses on issues such as caregiving, finances, end-of-life, dementia and Alzheimer’s through documentaries, town halls, panel discussions, short form updates, community conversations, and screenings.

There is, of course, no one size fits all solution. I saw a documentary where others who live in their vehicles have a safe, (well, relatively safe) gated area (forgive me, I don't recall the city, but I believe it was in California ) the gated area is secured (as best they can) at night, with a sheltered pavilion with picnic tables for eating, electricity for charging phones, etc. a community microwave and burners (I'm pretty sure you have to provide your own cookware and cooler), but it's at least a little something with some degree of comfort. I believe there is also a community restroom, (not sure about shower facilities, and I'm sure there is probably safety issues in that regard) The people there have a sense of community by watching out for one another, and one gentleman has a few reliable restaurants who gladly donate the fresh daily leftovers which he shares. Although I'm certain they have their share of problems and possibly trust issues, it shows that there are people who can be extremely resourceful when given even the smallest or basic assistance. Like you, not everyone requires all their needs covered, just a little basic daily living needs can be helpful. There are citizens who need more, but the idea of helping those who live in their vehicles by offering something, who knows, it might be all that person needs to sustain themselves or to help themselves ❤. Best wishes, your courage and gratitude for you freedom is refreshing 🎉

I’m educated and even lived in France during my college years for a short time. Actually, ended u homeless over there, too. Over here, I was living in my car with a cane. It wasn’t comfy. Before I ended up in my car, I was going to this church for six months. I asked for help from the church, as they were helping a new staff member that hadn’t started yet. @@ronaldreagan-ik6hz Unfortunately a lot of people do not earn enough for housing. Here in Nashville a one bedroom apartment is on average over $1700 a month. You have to make three times that amount to qualify along with a good credit score. These rent amounts are just more than many can afford. The loss of a job, car, or a serious illness can wipe you out quickly. The widening of the income gap and the shrinking of the middle class has led to a steady decrease in the share of U.S. aggregate income held by middle class households. As this gap grows there will be more and more homeless. In effect, more than half of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and one crisis away from homelessness.
59% of Americans are a single paycheck away from homelessness. That means that something as minor as an emergency room visit or a transmission failure could take three out of five employees from making ends meet to catastrophe.

There's sooooo many seniors there. But I would still advise seniors to consider moving to south Florida for cheap housing of all varieties.

Society doesn’t value loyalty to companies like that anymore. Once you’ve given your all your whole life to this company and you are no longer able to keep up with the younger generation of employees they do whatever they can to kick you to the curb, never acknowledging the millions youve helped line their pockets with, the loyalty that made their lives easier at your expense, keeping your nose to the grindstone for sometimes decades not even asking for a $0.50 raise every four or five years even though your bosses are making their bonuses, commissions, stock options, etc., but you were so grateful for the holiday pizza party and you got to decorate the cubicle on your birthday. Even though you had five to ten days of paid leave for the year, you were ok with having to be sure none of the 50 other employees in your department already scheduled the same time off and hoped maybe youll get to sprinkle your days off here and there depending what scrap days are left over. But your new supervisor who you just know hates your guts is going to give you shit for it because thats the day she wants and youre going to end up being punished for it and you’ll have no way to prove it so you just gotta take it and keep doing everything you’re told to cause you dont want to get another write up. You already got one for clocking in 3 minutes late 3 times this month when your car broke down and you had to get a ride and were at the mercy of someone else doing a favor for you. But that doesnt matter. No one cares. You better show up on time. You better not complain. You better step on anyone you can to keep your head above the water. Because truth is, youre not valued by that company. The family-like environment they say its like is all fake, just ask yourself, what ever happened to Josephine who worked two cubicles over from you for 15 years after she left? You never heard from her again and neither did anyone else at that company. Some family.

22:12 As someone who went through the Section 8 housing program in WA state, it's a nightmare process that yields little to no results. My family was on the waiting list for years before finally getting through. That's when the REAL nightmare began. Section 8 does not provide the housing, all they do is assist financially with rent (which is still amazing, don't get me wrong). But what nobody mentions is that landlords can reject you solely for that reason. Idk if that's actually legal or not, but every landlord was doing it and suffered no repercussions.
When my family got Section 8 assistance, it was up to us to find the home of our choice. We applied EVERYWHERE, and NOBODY would accept us. The landlords would meet with us, give us a tour, and be friendly. Then the moment we mention we are paying with Section 8 assistance, EVERY SINGLE LANDLORD rejected us right then and there. Months went by, and we still couldn't get a place. Thankfully a sibling found a great job and was able to move my entire family with them. But holy crap, the entire housing programs in this country is a disaster.

No landlord should be allowed to pick who rents it should be first come. They shouldn't be allowed to discriminate they shouldn't be allowed to do background checks and credit scores to discriminate against people. There should be a law nationally that a landlord can charge no more than one hundred dollars per bedroom a month no more,no pet deposits,no pet fees,no pet rents a person's pet is their personal property not a human being. Either that or we need a law that all landlords must put all rent invested into their property into a high interest bank account when the tenant moves or is evicted the landlord must return all rent invested into their property back to the tenant/investor the landlord keeps the interest on the account. If the landlord refuses to return the tenants investment the tenant gains full legal ownership of the property they invested into free and clear of all debts incurred against said property.

I have been on my own mainly since 17 now 62. There are certain skills and knowledge that can make it easier to succeed and never be homeless. I see how these people made their life more difficult so when mishaps happened more likely to be homeless. 😢😢😢😢. If you have health issues. . Don't drink soda. If you don't have enough money for life alternating emergencies, don't get a pet, even an emotional pet. Drinking and drugs will numb you and not solve anything but leave you worse off. I say this with love not judgement. It is not one thing but a combination of daily choices to make since a teen. Stoicism help. I had bad experiences like all ..but staying grounded helps with ready set back up plans.

That's the thing, it's actually pretty easy to miss a paycheck and essentially go homeless. But from what I've seen, most people don't go homeless because they either have a friend or a family member that will give them housing till they get back on their feet. Narcissistic A**holes don't have friends/family willing to help them. A sad theme you'll notice among homeless people is that they don't have anybody except themselves.

Been sick since 2021 and no place to live. 62 and trying to start over. What little I have earned is consumed with wound supplies and colostomy bags. As for friends or family let’s just say, it’s been very inconvenient that I didn’t die when everyone expected me to.
I’m not looking for anything free, just maybe a place clean and safe to sleep. Some place priced accordingly to my ability to pay. I’m not on any assistance because I can’t guarantee what I can earn month to month and I won’t lie!
