Cantos is referenced to the OLD old old book called the Canterberry Tales...1) it starts with CANT, 2) the story deals with Pilgrims, & 3) The story is written from all the characters point of view. Thus, the play of words/style of Hyperion/book 1 (they are actually 1 book). BUT...You knew that 😉

'Cantos' must be a reference to the Divine Comedy by Dante, a great medieval poem in three parts, every one of which is divided into 'cantos'. Two modern poets wrote big epic poems: Ezra Pound, with his Cantos, and Pablo Neruda, with his Spanish-language Canto General.

This is my favorite sci-fi series. The best I have read, and you will still find more surprises in the next books. I promise you. Ok, I'm not expert in words, but the words cantos and canciones mean Songs. And I would say that the word canción is any song, like pop song. But cantos sound more poetic. I use the word canto to refer the songs I sing in the church, for example.

The first two books in this series are two of my favorite of all time. The prose is phenomenal and the story is so unique. I’m currently reading the third and loving it so far but idk if anything could ever top the 1 2 punch the first novels have. As a parent Sol’s story hit me hard too.

Another one of my favorites quotes is this : “What you call riots are the first death throes of a society which deserves to die”.
This is behind the idea that sociological causality and market externalities generate violence and there’s some kink in the social system that needs to be fixed.

I liked Hyperion because it was so distinctive in style and structure, but this book really struck me. All four taught me some really important storytelling lessons. Definitely going to reread soon.

I found it really interesting, how prescient those novels are. They were done in the 90’s and the reference comlogs(cellphones)and the web(internet)and the core/AI having an algorithm that sort of introduces the philosophical element of free will vs determinism. This quote from the fall of Hyperion was really ahead of its time, especially in light of the Snowden revelations, regarding the NSA. ““Nothing could be done about it-every human above the lowest Dregs’ Hive poverty class had a comlog with biomonitor, many had implants, and each of these was tuned to the music of the datasphere, monitored by elements of the datasphere, dependent upon functions of the datasphere-so humans accepted their lack of privacy.”

Does the second book have a satisfying resolution? Or do you need to read all the 4 books?

Good review. I have heard of Dan Simmons. I haven’t read any of his books. I know he wrote a horror book
    called Summer night. I thinks that’s it’s
called, it’s been compared to It.

You, kind sir, get a like just for the word "cantos." Maybe its a Spanish word? Ask Dante or Ezra Pound.😏Canto is Spanish means song, hence lyric or poem. Hyperion needs some awesome Shrike music.

I thought book 1 was ok, aside from simmons'a horrible prose, horrible pretentiousness, the fact that idgaf about Keats, tree ships are dumb af, his bastardization of other sci fi genres and their terms (cyberpuke), his unimaginative made up words, the fact that it's so obvious that he uses a thesaurus (uses the same obsecure word 5 times in 3 pages then never again) the fact that he ended the book with the main characters singing together... but it had some nice twists and turns.and I love sci fi
After reading book two, I hate simmons with a passion, he can go lapis lazuli himself. What an absolute hack lol.
    I don't get the praise.
    1. The big answer at the end is "love"... it's love. Yes the void beyond is love
    2. Ousters are furries and insect people.
    3. Why does Rachel Weintraub have to go to the future. Why does she need to accompany the shrike. Why would the shrike allow it. What did the shrike tell her that convinced her to be the shrike's companion etc etc. Also Brawne met her ad Moneta a couple of times. Then at the end she sees her with Sol, and immediately instinctively knows that's Rachel. But it takes her a while to figure out that it's Moneta. When she had already seen her and knew her ad Moneta!
    4. Why does the shrike care, why does he care about defeating the trinity as a whole. Simmons' explanation is that it wouldn't be a true victory otherwise. Yeah sure bro
    5. The shrike can travel in time, he can travel to the future to see if he won and change the conditions to make it so he won.
    6. Why do future humans built the shrike temple and send it back. What the f is the point when they are going to fight him anyway
Like at one point humans in the future decided to do this. Which also.must have completely altered history. None of it makes sense
    7. At the end they sing again..this time they sing over the rainbow. I swear almost threw my ereader against the wall.
None of the twists and turns were good in the second book. Kassads story is dumb. Rachel's story is dumb. Their love story is dumbest of all, they interact for like 90 seconds in total but have a super intense love story somehow
    8. "God wasn't testing Abraham, Abraham was testing God" is straight up one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. To come to such a conclusion you need to basically ignore every abrahamic tradition and text.
    9. He constantly acts like Islam isn't an Abrahmic faith and sets them apart from Christianity and Judaism. Kassad is there only to make.a Israel / Palestine allegory. Kassad is "one of the g'ones". At the end every planet is fine except every Muslim planet which all have nuclear Jihads and Shiite resolutions and regress 2000 years..
I can go on for ever. Bro, if anyone is impressed by Simmons' insipid drivel they likely just know too little about the "deeper" things he writes about to understand how dumb it all is
P.s I wrote this before watching the review. And although passive aggressive I didn't meant to insult anyone except Dan Simmons who can Lapis Lazuli himself

THIS! I’m 1/2 way through Fall of Hyperion and I am just done with this garbage. I was okay with Hyperion being Canterbury Tales in Space - several separate stories and all, but this followup is s l o w and poorly paced. I’m OUT.
(For the record, I love big books. This one just doesn’t warrant its length.)
