  • My daughter purchased this car a few months ago and we do not know the maintenance history. It has 129,204 miles. In this video we will change the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). The most difficult part of this job, if you are doing it for the first time, is removing the fill bolt. It is a poor design but in this video you will see how to successfully remove it, and modify it, so it will not be a problem in the future. I recommend changing the ATF every 30,000 miles. If you are like us, and purchased it used and don’t know the history, just start where you are and then do it every 30,000 miles.
    Remember, this is my first time performing all of this maintenance on this car. You are watching me learn on the video. If you need to skip ahead to an area of interest, this will help you out:

      @@PaulNaylor3 i did. Also, the fill bolt in the video, there is a way to get it out without loosening the gear plate. The fill bolt has indented slots that is used to twist and lock an place. You have to make sure the opening part is facing the gear plate when pulling it out. I got it in 10sec.

    I meant to say that this is a very useful video. I've seen people get 3.5 quarts out in other videos but I got exact 4 quarts (1 US Gallon). I used a DEF funnel which has a small diameter tip.

    I did the same with the Dremel tool. With that notch cut out, you can remove it without touching the air box. Couple of extensions and a knuckle thing. First time I did this, I added Aisin SP4 which is OEM. The transmission would rattle when cold. I drained and filled with Valvoline Max Life for SP4, no more rattle.

      What type of rattle are you referring to? like is it in 1st gear as you take off then it disappears then reappears ?
      personally i dont have a rattle, but i have similar sounds as i had described above which sounds like my injectors. they sound too loud

      @@PaulNaylor3 I meant to ask...when you drained it for the first time, how dirty was it? Were you able to determine if it had been changed before? Our 2017 has 88k miles and I know it has never been changed so wondering if it's 'too late' to do it without causing problems.

    • @PaulNaylor3
      @PaulNaylor3  Před 6 měsíci +1

      We bought this car used and weren’t sure when or if the transmission fluid had been changed. If it were my car I would change it. I have heard concerns from others about how they wouldn’t bother changing it if it had been too long but I’ve never really understood that argument. I hope the video helps you when and if you change your fluid.

    Only thing I do differently is use Amsoil OE Fuel Efficient Synthetic Transmission Fluid instead of Valvoline. I live in California and I do it every May(before summer) and every November(after summer). Lot of people skip transmission maintenance but it is extremely crucial and it can save you over 3-5k just by doing simple transmission fluid change.
    For first timers though, I recommend doing it 3 times(drive in between at least 50-100 miles to mix the used and new oil since each drain only takes away about 40-50% of the fluid since rest of the fluid is in the torque converter). After that, then doing it once every May and November is fine. I usually like to do it when I do my oil change. Two birds with one stone.
    I bought my car new and I have 150k on it and every time I drain, it is red. I get criticized from peers saying I'm doing it too much but I prefer to see that light red as I drain rather than dark red or black. I put 30k miles per year. so basically every 15k miles I do it.

    Nice, but from a safety standpoint, never trust your life to a Jack, when they fail, they fail fast and the car comes crashing down on you … always use jackstands and the Jack can be your secondary safety lift

    I own a 2018, same model purchased with 34k on the odometer and have until 60k covered by the so-called warranty being the 2nd owner. Hyundai has the longest warranty around but this only means the buyer will come out of pocket to maintain the drain&fill tranny procedure every 30-50k miles through an approved Hyundai Service tech. If not, expect the tranny fail after warranty ends/100k miles or tech advising not to touch fluid after not changing at 50k mile intervals My dealership would only do a "flush" so I called a different dealership who told me they'd do a drain&fill. I've heard CZcams DIY'ers as yourself advise draining&filling 3 times, driving around after each to mix clean with fluid that is in the system itself and not in the reservoir getting drained. I had the other dealership perform two with a month's driving between each change when there was 48k on my odometer.

      I took a risk draining and filling my '06 Corolla with no previous changes at 180k miles on the odometer and was successful up to the rear-end collision that totalled the car at 215k.

      @@PaulNaylor3 Good care at best but I lack the familiarity of the real mechanic and am highly fearful of going a step too far into catastrophe. Limit my caffeine intake as I thoroughly plan all procedures, most being the first time and the most difficult. Your channel helps very much like reading the instructions another five times.

    • @PaulNaylor3
      @PaulNaylor3  Před 11 měsíci +1

      I’m glad you find the channel helpful. I generally recommend changing transmission fluid every 30,000 miles and oil changes every 5000 miles. If you change the transmission fluid every 30,000 miles, draining it one time and filling it to the right amount should be sufficient without having to go through the multiple draining steps you mentioned. When manufacturers recommend changing the fluid at a certain interval they are aware that not all of it comes out. I think the method of draining the transmission multiple times is good if you feel the vehicle has not been taken care of and you are changing it for the first time after 80 or 90,000 miles then I could see going through those step the first time and then doing it every 30,000 thereafter. Since you are taking care of yours right from the beginning I think if you did a transmission fluid change every 30,000 miles just draining what comes out and refilling to the appropriate amount you would do well. I hope that helps.

    • @PaulNaylor3
      @PaulNaylor3  Před 2 měsíci +1

      27:12 I added 4 quarts. There is a method where you can take a check bolt out of the side of the transmission and let excess fluid run out of there to get an exact level but I chose not to do it that way.

    • @the_better_life
      @the_better_life Před 2 měsíci +1

      Проверять уровень нужно на заглушенном двигателе или выставлять уровень на работающем? Какой температуры должна быть жидкость?

    • @PaulNaylor3
      @PaulNaylor3  Před 2 měsíci +1

      If you want to use the check bolt to get the level correct you can use this procedure;
      Remove Fill plug and then remove the drain bolt to allow fluid to drain.
      Install Drain bolt with new crush washer at torque to 30 lb ft.
      Remove Check bolt.
      Put 3-1/2 quarts into fill hole using long funnel.
      Slowly add more until a slow drip comes from the check hole.
      Install check bolt with new crush washer, just hand tight because it is temporary.
      Start car, cycle through each gear for at least 3 seconds while holding brake pedal the entire time. Start with park and end with park. Turn off vehicle.
      Remove check bolt.
      Slowly add more fluid until a slow drip comes from the check hole.
      Install check bolt.
      Congratulations! You are finished!
