VIDEO INFO:
Howdy friends! In this video I meet up with two young paleontologists, Dean and Zach, who share with me their expertise as we dig through the fossil beds of the Mahatango formation of Eastern Pennsylvania. I have my eyes set on finding a pyritized fossil or golden fossil. Ancient remains who have been replaced with iron pyrite or fools gold. While this beds pyrite appears more iron-y or white, I am still on the hunt for a crown jewel for my collection. Join me as we learn about the past from two fellow science communicators and dig up our fair share of ancient marine life.

Hey Milo, im a mechanic out in Michigan. Just wanted to let you know, that sounds like an exhaust leak. Nothing too important, just somewhere your exhaust has a gap or hole. Could be a broken beacket, kr a rust hole. Its loud, but not detrimental to the car's function.
Edit since I didn't think this would ever be top comment lol: Bring it to an exhaust or muffler shop, it's most likely something simple that can be fixed for a few hundred bucks.
The only good person from Michigan (ima ohioan)
@@adennave7323Michigander here, Toledo is ours! (Just kidding I love Ohio.)
@@adennave7323same brother 🤣
The flex pipe on my car rusted through and made it really loud... It made my gas mileage go down!
The bracket connecting my car to my muffler rusted out and made my car sound like a beast lmao hated that I felt like I needed to get it fixed lmao
Was a blast to work with you Milo!
It was a pleasure my friend! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with me and the rest of the community. Looking forward to our next dig!
@@miniminuteman773When will you continue this month in archeology?
You guys sure know your stuff!! Incredibly impressed by the depth of your knowledge and the ease by which you communicate it. Thank your for sharing it!
@@STCTZenzasyeah, been waiting so long, please try to get it back if you can!
@chasingghosts42069 just subbed, any friend of milo is a friend if mine! Looking forward to more adventures, and checking out your vids too. Btw, I appreciate the 420 as well….#BudderUp 🔥💨
i just spent 30min of my life happily watching 3 youngsters enthusiastically breaking rocks and saying things that flew way over my head.
Ain't that the truth
im surprised i dont see more comments addressing how insanely smart dean is for a 17 year old. kids got encyclopedic knowledge of prehistoric fossils
He probably found he loved fossils as a kid, and learned tons about it in that ez to learn kid brain of his, and just kept going
ikr i kept on thinking i misheard his age while watching the vid cus he is so knowledgeable
Wait, bro is 17? GOD DAYM thats impressive
I had actual archaeology professors who weren't as well-versed XD
WAIT WHAT? I am older than him, what the hell. Dude already looks like a professional archeologist.
I love how most archaeologists call the species and stuff they find "Individuals" because it's important to remember that these ain't just rocks, but were once living creatures like us!
Great catch there! It's a hard thing to remember but is very important. Even those tiny little bugs were living, feeling critters once. I feel very lucky to be able to be a part of their story in my tiny blip on this planet.
@@miniminuteman773 Oh man you actually replied! Great to get a reply man and yeah I agree, it's an important thing for everyone to keep in mind that even though they may now be _in_ the rocks they are _not_ just rocks,if someone digs up your dead dog in a hundred thousand years and just treats the fossils like dollar store fake fossils it's probably gonna piss you off a good bit. Every fossil was once a living thing and deserve the utmost respect in both handling and naming
Given how fossilization works, a fossil is arguably not the remains of a living creature, but the space that creature used to occupy.
@@leeshajoi Also true, but never forget that the creature you're looking at was alive! They're not just rocks
Paleontologists deal with fossils--not archaeologists.
“It’s a coprolite! Oh shit-“
*literally*
I love your channel because it pivots my perception of archaeologists and scientists to one where it's a bunch of guys hanging out with a sledge hammer yellin, "Fuck it uuuuup!" as they smash rocks, and that makes science more relatable, y'know?
Ya. They do know. That’s probably what reaches viewers compelling them to chase their dreams to learn and discover more .
"welcome to the paleo-Lab, or the shed in my backyard"
was the hardest line of the entire video
Golden fossils sound like something you find in animal crossing.
That or Pokemon. The Golden Fossil let's you catch a legendary
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought that!
Jesus I gifted my partner a switch for our anniversary and she has been on an absolute TEAR in Animal Crossing. Every evening I get a new updated museum tour. Lost my fuckin mind over the Oarfish
Indian Jones and the Golden Fossil; or Harrison Ford, as he is more usually known.
It’s a shame they didn’t patch in more fossils, I collected all of them relatively quickly during my plague binge.
Since Milo likes trilobites, why not a trilobite shaped silver pendant for necklaces next time he releases jewelry?
Hello my friend. Have a nice day. You deserve it
That sounds great.
I would go nuts for that 😍
I'm dirt poor and saving for my first apartment so I have no money to spare, I'd buy that
@@charmaduplessis6854 If you have the time to put into it I'd recommend Quick Thoughts survey app. It's been awhile since I've done it but I've gotten two to three hundred over time. Mostly do them when bored or watching TV. Just watch out for the trick questions. They'll start to ask something then tell you which to pick.
It pays 10¢ if the survey isn't right for you up to 5 a day & $1+- for finished surveys.
Once you get $10 cash out for the Amazon code & you now have b$10 to spend on Amazon. It might give you a bit of spending money for a treat. But cash out the $10 immediately & add it to your account. Just in case they decide to ban you or something. Good luck in saving up.
These guys need to be REGULAR guests on this channel from now on. They absolutely SLAMMED it! Thoroughly enjoyed this.
Agreed, I'm also checking the video description right after leaving this comment to see if they have channels linked there so I can subscribe to them they're funny and so knowledgeable
Immediately following "I think moving through the world with love is important" with a roar of primal fury is an energy I can respect
Those two dudes already talk about the fossils with such a depth of knowledge and obvious passion for the topic despite being so young, they're gonna go super far. This was a really fun one to watch.
Yeah it was a real delight watching them alternate between going absolute king kong donkey kong on those rocks and then be like "Ah, yes, I recognize this specific type of extinct trilobite, characteristic of the genus from 410 to 412 mya, I know him and love him like a brother."
Just a real blast with three great lads.
The power of human communication and good education
It's also kinda funny watching Dean drawing dicks on his forehead with a sharpy while high on an Instagram video call lmfao
I mean even though Milo has a bit of education on them he also is pretty dang young. I think he's like 24? And he's done a lot with it. This is the next generation he's inspiring lol I hope they get some kind of grant to go to school for this.
@@x-xPhobia yeah with every generation, more knowledge is passed down than in the previous one.
I'm going to just say, F Yeah! 17 yo and knows his shit!! I'm 62 Milo. Keep finding these young scientists on the channel! I'm pumped about this!!
Bro for real that kid made me feel like a fucking failure at 32. Dude is way smarter than me and I really hope that equals a ton of success for him.
I get it! No flexing here, I have a load of certs, but having this knowledge at 17/20 , Way jealous!!
@@Arekkummhey, it’s never too late to learn!
@@gentlesandladymen Absolutely, a lot of us old farts still love learning but the brain is more like a sieve than a sponge now!
62 here. I've always believed that learning is the endless reward. A little sappy but F it!🤣🤣
Did that kid say he's only 17!? Wow, his paleo knowledge is very impressive!
Laura I really like your profile picture and if you let me, I would make such an amazing mural out of it! If you don’t mind one of your post could be my inspiring muse for an art project i’m working on for a client. You will totally get paid for it as well as a bonus also get credits.
The OSHA-trained contractor in me is wincing at 3:31 where you're swinging a sledge at a rock face and not wearing any eye (let alone ear) protection. It will be a lot harder to make videos with just one working eye, Milo.
I'm not trained but I also started thinking "those peepers are awful close to the sharp projectiles they're manufacturing"
@@gormauslanderchaotic manufacturing of sharp projectiles surely calls for something, right?😭
Archeologists and geologists just kinda do that shit when we aren't on the clock-
At least the ones I know and am
Right…it was the chucks for me…I wear steel capped toes working with horses
I get the eye protection, but, ear protection?..for a hammer?
Milo narrating what’s happening on the road while driving is a mood.
I would legit just watch that for hours. xD
Same kind of outer monologue I have when I'm driving 🥲
Huh…a science/knowledge-based channel that doesn’t make me feel like I’m dumb or bored with an actual personality? That’s a sub
Hi Milo,
I’m a paleontologist who started following a while ago for the conspiracy debunking and because I love your sense of humor. As someone who doesn’t deal with humans, but otherwise has similar interests and research methods, it’s super cool to see you teach about my field as well. Thank you for all that you do for science, and I hope that you never loose the passion that is so evident in your videos.
Dean's actually a family friend! I went fossil hunting with him a while back. It's so cool to see him on my favorite CZcams channel.
Is it bad that I could tell just from the way he swears at the road that Milo has lived in New England for a significant portion of his life?
These two kids are the future of our scientific studies and I am completely comfortable with that being in their hands
always appreciate how Milo prioritizes uplifting fellow creators and academics and general little guys
It shows that Milo is really committed to archaelogical integrity, and aligns with what he stated he would do in his videos about addressing moving potshards.
CZcams, we need more young-ish history, science, etc.. channels with people being real and goofy while getting excited for their work. This was awesome. We have enough "professional" uptight people, more goofy ass relatable people
This stuff is amazing!
I live in Romania and, honestly, your videos got me interested in archeology and helped me discover all the marvelous things this land has to offer
I can't overstate how big my excitement was when, while on a roadtrip to Turkey, while sitting on a seaside rock, I stumbled upon a tiny shell fossil that I took home with me
Everytime I stumble over it in my room I have to rewatch your videos
Thank you for showing me how to properly apreciate our ancient past!
I know this content doesn’t do as well as some of his other videos, but I hope he keeps doing videos like this to break up the awful archeology. I wish his dark routes series did better, the production value was crazy
Dean Rocco, Zachary Fink …. Commendable work and exceptional knowledge base to the world millions of years ago, and the geological events that entombed creatures of all sizes. Great collaboration with Milo bringing science, facts, and life’s most curious lessons to reach and teach many.
John
yeah smashing rocks is cool and all (i love it!!) but i got so happy seeing that your partner and you are very happy together 😭😭 the little segment where she promotes her artwork/hoodie is my favorite part of the video, yall are giggling like highschoolers fjsjdk please keep featuring her milo!!

Yoo that 17 year old is wearing a SeaBase belt!! I’ve got the same one! It’s a BSA High Adventure camp in Florida where you go out on a wooden sailing vessel for days with your scout group and it was one of the most incredible trips of my life!
That caught my eye too! Never went (I was a Philmont kinda guy) but my friends that went were always rocking those belts.
@@sleepingbee8997 I was always rocking that belt cause we were allowed to integrate it into our Class A’s. Looking back I definitely thought it was so friggin cool lol.
I was supposed to go to Philmont as well, but instead I tore my ACL about 3 weeks before we were due to leave.
Had to scramble to find someone to replace me so we didn’t eat the whole cost, and my best friend ended up tenting with a rando from the next troop over instead of tenting with me as we always did on trips like that 😂
My Troop was so great about getting us on trips like that!
@@theinformationstation5328 Same same, I always wore my Philmont belt at any Scouting event.
Shame you missed Philmont! If you ever have the opportunity, I highly recommend spending some time in the mountains in New Mexico.
My brother did that over winter! And he did Philmont too I think! It was his last boy scout trip he ever would do because he is in college now and a Eagle Scout.
He said that a few of the groups on the boats ran aground and one sunk and got damaged. He got lucky. I think that is the one he did
I love how much more comfortable the 17 year old got throughout the video. He’s very smart.
This is the scientific version of digging a hole at the beach
That's a corprolite!
Oh shit
Milo , I must of snort laughed half a beer on the couch !
Well done mate !😜
When I was a teenager (some fifty-mumble years ago), my bio class went on a trip to New Paltz, New York, where we did some fossil collecting in a road cut. I found a gorgeous pyrite brachiopod over an inch across. I had no idea they were all that unusual. This was a wonderful episode!
This man went to Scranton Pennsylvania and didn't make an Office reference, absolute legend.
It is so awesome to see guys half my age be so knowledgeable and excited about a subject. It really contrasts against the full on adults that push conspiracy BS and bad archeology.
This takes me back to when I played in the old abandoned Quarrys in PA. Shale just everywhere for what seemed like miles, we'd play castle siege etc etc and the shale was the ultimate backdrop for battlegrounds. Thanks for the trip back Milo.
Me and my friends used to do the same thing and ride our dirt bikes in small shale quarries as kids. Sure we’re some fun times.
If you cross into Canada at the Peace Bridge, there is a conservation area in a little village called Wainfleet, maybe 30-40 minutes down highway 3.
It's a former limestone quarry, that limestone is absolutely full of coral, ammonites, trilobite fossils. The stuff is just everywhere. I swear every rock in that place has a fossil in it.
Realistically, you could see that fossil bed and Niagara Falls in a single day with time for a pint and dinner.
Food for thought.
That was great You're forgetting one thing though: EYE PRO!! Seriously, you never think about the need for safety glasses til you get a rock chip in the eye., then you'll never forget it.
Chasing Ghosts is a pretty sick name for an arch/paleo/anthrop/etc channel 👏👏
This video makes me feel so much better about America’s youth.
Your interactions around 18:20 are so adorbs!
Halfway through, I had a moment of realisation that I watch some insanely nerdy shit that would be boring for pretty much anyone I know. But also, I love it.
You three seemed to have a really good time and I had a big grin all through the video. I'm happy for you, and thank you.
Also, Milo, you and your girlfriend are cute together.
Thank you for your great content, I like it!
I started watching your channel because I found HILARIOUS how you treat the "conspiracy/main stream science is lying to us" etc, but now I'm kinda getting interested in fossils, besides the dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are freaking awesome.
I love Milo's hyper-focus on all his interests I love it so much. Combined with his love of talking and getting to know people he meets absolutely gives me great joy. Thank you for sharing your love of so much with all of us!
I love Dean's energy, so full of excitement and happiness to meet Milo and making friends.
I love this kid! He is going places chasing his passion for fossils!
Milo is one of the few creators that diversified his content and I love everything. Like it's not a quality thing it's just a taste thing many of my favorite creators I only watch their niche that I initially followed or subscribed for, but with Milo everything is just so genuinely entertaining that I watch all of it
DUDE!!! My father in law (who is also a motorcycle guy) goes on searches for bediasite here in central Texas. He's also a USDA entomolologyst who basically created the central American screw worm iradication project. You guys would have INCREDIBLE conversations looking for meteorite rocks.
you and your partner have such a fun and healthy dynamic! I look forward to more really cool merch!
I like your funky rocks, history man.
That brings back memories of my Grandfathers house which had a gravel area, kind of a scoop out of a side of a hill, where my brother and I used to go with a rock hammer and find a lot of fossilized shells. This was up in the Petoskey area of Michigan.
All those rocks are long gone I know not where, but I still remember the fun of finding fossils when I was in my pre tweens.
Thanks for sharing. You need to group up with someone who is into EVs so you can go electric and leave the muffler troubles behind and instead worry about range anxiety, LOL.
It's awesome to see how knowledgeable that dude is at just 17. Their passion and enthusiasm is a bit infectious - makes me want to get a hammer and go find fossils! Really great video my friend, hope we get more fossil hunts in the future. I'd also really love to see you hunt for saphires, too!
Milo's rode rage is the most new england thing ever I love it
Genuinely impressed and glad to see these young guys' passion, knowledge and intelligence. For 17 and 20 year-olds they are both incredibly good in front of the camera, and they also have the enthusiasm to communicate their extensive knowledge. I hope they have a great career, go to college or move towards science communication, because it seems they can do both very well.
It's utterly impossible not to see Dean's passion for fossils shining through in everything he does. After all, the true key to having the happiest and most fulfilling life possible is to find the things you're most passionate about and indulge in those things as often as you possibly can.
Dean is going to have a real future in science. I can totally see him discovering something someday, because passionate people are tenacious.
I knew we had some neat fossils in PA, but this showed me I didn't know enough. That's so awesome.
I love that you're so eager to learn and you listen and show so much respect to the other guys when they tell you what they know. Thank you for this fun look into digging up trilobites. Please never stop making your wonderful videos!
I am absolutely interested in more content like this in the future. Meaning both fossil stuff and just bringing on people who know their stuff like these guys, regardless of the topic. It's fun to hear someone who clearly loves what they know and want to share it.
I need more of these types of videos. Especially the process of revealing the fossil burried in the stone. I don't think I blinked once, I was so enthralled.
That kid is 17 and already so knowledgeable
Your timing in publishing this video could not be better - I just took my 11yo nephew to the Rice Northwest Museum of Rocks and Minerals, & they had some particularly beautiful examples of pyratized fossils on display, which captured his imagination. So being able to watch this video with him to see how people look for, dig, & the process to bring them out of the rock is fantastic.
Thank you so much!!
Absolutely love this channel. Im always on the edge of my seat waiting for the next upload! (Eta typo corrections)
Love this dude's energy.
Dean and Zach, legends of the East Coast. Hell digging boys!
Only legends because you helped us throughout the way. I wouldn’t be nearly as good at prep if you didn’t provide me very special opportunities to improve my craft!
Hey milo, about a week before i saw this video my mom gave me part of my grandfathers rock collection (i come from a family of geologists) and among the rocks i got i found a pyrite fossil. Its kinda big like about the size of the palm of my hand and its encased in mud. This video made me go find it again and remember my grampa thanks.
Oh my gods, her outfit is AMAZING. That aside, the fossil prep looks so satisfying. I could hyper fixate and do that for hours given the opportunity
On a different note, is it possible to make molds? Seeing a big collection of fossils in one rock makes we want to do an imprint, but I know itd be insane to coat it in paint just for a piece of art
I can't begin to tell you how happy it makes me to watch three nerds having such fun!! The brain power of you hammer weilding young men is impressive. My three sons are exactly like you three. Watching you guys makes me want to rustle up some snacks or shout, "Turn it down!" across the house. Then texting TURN IT DOWN when they obviously can't hear. me. The youngest is 20, so they aren't together very often anymore, but what fun it is when they're all together again!
It's so funny to me how this guy has so much incredibly detailed knowledge about all these trilobites and can tell them all apart so easily, but has absolutely no clue what any of the plants are. And he's so young too! What a cool hobby to have developed so much while so young
Loved watching you all interact - brilliant and charismatic people coming together!
This is SO COOL. I was going "ooh! ooh!" at least once a minute--what beautiful creatures, and the preservation of them is so amazing. I'm really impressed with Dean and Zach's expertise and wisdom--folks like them give me hope for the future!
What a frickin cool couple a guys! What a fun time!! Just a few guys diggin around finding cool stuff. Wholesome af
You have quickly become one of my favorite youtubers and you are the only one whose shorts made me watch the long form content.
I love the collaborations you do, Milo. These gents were so passionate I couldn't help but smile ear-to-ear the whole time, my face is a bit sore right now. Incredible work as always, hats off to you, and these talented, smart fellas. Will definitely check them out.
I can't imagine these videos get as many views, but i love seeing the more physical side of science. This was really cool too see.
These guys were exceptional! You should definitely have them again sometime. You three were a great team and vibe together.
Found you channel today and can’t get enough man. Love the fantastic work keep it up man you got this 🎉❤
These guys are simultaneously so like actually cool and funny and also such nerds I love them so much
I feel like it's people like you are what gives me confidence in humanity. Educational and badass don't usually go hand in hand.
It's so cool to see other young people go out there and start to take up the sciences! My whole life I've been fascinated by the world and how it came to be and how it works, but only ever saw titans and old people working in the field so I went into music instead of science, but youtube channels like yours and collaborations like this make me feel so much awe and make me want to pick the sciences back up, even if only as a hobby.
When my dad passed through Utah on his way to deployment in the Middle East he collected a punch of Trilobite fossils for me from I think somewhere on a mountainside,I don’t remember what species they were because I sold them a while ago,but this just reminds me of that 12 year old swooning over Little Rocks with Roly polys in them and without a single care in the world,it’s a great feeling honestly, thanks
So pleased to have been introduced to your channel, Milo! This video in particular was super fun!
My oldest is 12 (so it's incredible to me to think that in 5 years they could be as hands on and knowledgeable as the youngest of your team here) my other is 9, and loves rocks.
Bet your bottom dollar that I'll be watching this with them to keep that interest and love alive!
Love how the box is full of fern fossils and small aquatic species then a whole ass megalodon tooth.
Everything about this is so fun and down to earth- y'all were clearly having an absolute blast! This is just the source of serotonin I needed today.
I love this set up with the smashing and then discussing the various fossils from other areas. Also everyone sound very well versed in their stuff!
Absolutely loved it! As someone who picked up rockhounding as an adult hobby, I’m so happy to see how excited everyone is!! It’s such a fun peaceful outdoor activity, if you aren’t afraid of getting a bit dirty!
I love this channel! Archaeology and geology are both big loves and you have both.❤
this video was friggin cool as hell and all 3 of you guys are rad!
This is the best type of “let’s watch a bunch of dudes hit rocks for a little while.”
Seeing a 17 year old so passionate about fossils, especially eurypterids is amazing to see!
Always good vibes to watch Milo. I’m quite ill at the moment, and being able to watch this while wrapped up and trying to not die is a real comfort. The enthusiasm and the knowledge and just… I love how the videos are fun and entertaining, but does not DEMAND you to know it all after watching. I don’t know how else to say it other than same vibe as Attenborough, but with more expressed enthusiasm. Like comfort. Knowledge passed on through kindness and enthusiasm.
Thank you Milo for sharing your adventures and knowledge. I cannot express how much enjoyment I get from these vids. I used to rock hound, but am now disabled and this is the only way I "get out" and hunt up earths' treasures, until someone finds a way for those of us who are disabled to get back out into the field. Subscribing to the other channels as well. Thank you to all of you.
This whole video was so fun! It’s awesome to see you collaborating with such passionate people!
Hi Milo, enjoyed this video a great deal. Watching young people enthusiastically doing what they love was a pleasant turn in my day. Thank you and I look forward to more good things from you.
I love this! Just seeing you hang out with other science bros and being nerdy together like this so wholesome. Good contender for my comfort video ♥️
Really! really! enjoying these new type of videos Milo!! Please dont stop budd
Milo, the visible delight of you, Dean, and Zach- and also the astounding familiarity the two of them had with these fossils- is great to witness. It's the sort of thing that really does inspire people into the sciences, and I think it's something that is incredibly important, because without good science communication then this kind of passion and dedication never gets passed down, and the public never understands why these kinds of jobs are so important. Good on all three of you for what you do.
My mind is blown. When I was young we moved to Utah and my dad and I went looking for fossils in Arizona etc. and then moved back to the east coast. I had no fucking idea that we had fossils in PA like that. Had I known I would have looked for a place to go with my dad a long time ago.
Definitely going to check if there's anywhere near me now!
That was so insightful! Like watching this is like a pre-history class! love how passionate you are folks!! keep it going! and also awesome of you Milo to give those guys a spotlight! Really like this channel
I actually live right next to Hazelton and have loved your content and it made me really happy when you gave it a shout out lol
