  • On Diesel Insights, We are concluding a five part series on towing with tuned diesels of the big three; Cummins, Duramax, and Power Stroke.
Paul and Nick will be hitting on certain criteria such as comfort, drive-ability, and many other things we look for when picking a newer truck to tune and use as a hauler. This week we conclude the series and Paul and Nick discuss what they like the most out between the 2019 Cummins, the 2020 Duramax, and the 2020 Power Stroke. This is Part 5 of a 5 part series.
Be sure to follow along and subscribe as these videos will be in depth and full of info. Enjoy!

When it comes to towing heavy, the exhaust braking is where it seems like the Ram has an advantage too. Not something that matters that much for daily driving, but when you load it up, makes a difference in your driving confidence.

I agree. For guys using these trucks for constant towing (like hotshot work), the Ram probably makes the most sense. Exhaust brake is the best, transmission is stout, sounds like the Cummins lugs the best, and with the most reliable emissions system seems like a no brainer for a person that's going to put 500k plus miles on a truck. For work less than that the drivability of the other two come into play more.

Great video, thank you very much for comparing this in such detail. I looked for a heavy duty truck earlier this year and purchased the Ford Tremor Powerstroke. I am not brand loyal and considered also the RAM w the Cummins. Unfortunately I didn't know about the GMC Duramax. I used thg Tremor to tow a 8k lbs travel trailer 17k miles cross country and it did really good doing so. The exhaust brake works sometimes great and other times it seems it doesn't work at all. I wished that would be improved. Is the gas mileage improved after you tune these trucks?

I watched this video series several months back and took you guys input into consideration as well as test drove a few. Settled on a used 2020 F250 XLT 6.7 with 20k miles. The 10 speed transmission as well as my preference of the look and feel of the ford over the chevy settled my dilemma. So far I love my truck. I've put 5k on it. I daily drove it (mainly highway) and got 21.5 - 22 mpg and have used it to tow a 12' trailer with UTV (get about 18 mpg) and 13k toy hauler (get about 12.5 mpg) through the mountains of WV. Like you said, the aisin unloaded leaves a lot to be desired. The Ford gets 2mpg-ish better. From your experience, 3:31 or 3:55 on the Superduty? Not into lifting the truck and use stock size tires. I tow a 20k 5th wheel toy hauler through the mountains of Colorado. I hear the 3:31 has the same ratio as the 3:55 in 9th gear (1480ish rpm @75mph) but also can chug along in 10th gear for better mpg.

Great Stuff thanks for sharing - I'm not behind your thoughts on the 10 speed in the Duramax, I feel its a great asset since you now have a gear for any load at any speed, you don't get that in a 6 speed. You buy a HD truck to pull, when you pulling a load the last thing you want is the transmission to skip gears. I'm a long time Cummins guy, just changed out for a 24' GMC HD, I'm really enjoying it. Like you said the ride and feel of the Jimmy is unlike the other two trucks. Keep up the great work! Mike

I have watched all five of your videos this morning, and for the most part I agree with a lot of what you guys say and think you guys put a lot of good information together and did good putting puttin all things together as a complete package. One thing I think you should have put more effort in to was a discussion of reliability. Excluding 19 and 20 Rams and certain years of older Duramaxes, ford would be in my opinion the less reliable due to their fuel system. I know some guys go thousands of miles with a cp4, and some guys don't even make it out of warranty before they have a cp4 go down. There is good reason that Ram ditched the cp4 after only 2 years and GM also ditched the cp4 in 2017. Ford is still using that
Pump. And in my opinion that's a terrible pump to use terrible quality for us consumers especially at the price point. The next questionable thing with the Ford is the non-serviceable 10-speed transmission. In my opinion that's stupid for a truck made to work and towheavy loads. Ford is pretty much given us a throwaway transmission, if they were cheap that would be one thing, but they're not cheap if you could even get one in the first place. A machine made to work should have a serviceable transmission and should at least have a dipstick for checking oil level. Which the new 10 speed in the Ford does not have. I'd say the RAM and GM would be a few steps more reliable than the Ford and that should be a major concern to anybody looking to buy an $80000 plus truck.
I had a 21 F350, I had it for a month before I decided to trade it on a 21 Ram. I will say the Ford is a rocket ship and definitely a race truck out of the three, especially over the ram. But with tuning that is less of an issue. Although I still give Ford nod for power. Other than that the ram was just a nicer truck, way better exhaust break, nicer interior definitely a quieter interior. Have not spent much time in a GM, so can't comment on that. But a sound quality inside the cab between the Ford and the ram was no comparison to me or my wife. The ram wins hands down. Ram also has a couple cool futures and such the foud does not, one thing with the ram is you are able to view any of the cameras at any time while going down the road, Ford does not and I believe still does not have that option.
The last thing I'll point on that you guys did not, is how much easier the Cummins motor is to work on, for most things, changing oil on the other hand is definitely more of a pain on the ram then the Ford, but other than that when the time comes you have to do repairs I'd much rather be doing it on the ram over the Ford or GM. Whether I was paying to have it done or doing it myself.

Everest and never break a sweat, hands down the toughest on out there. I pull a 24k gooseneck with an excavator in the nc mountains, ram cannot keep the trans, also truck redlines the entire time when engine brakeing down the hill. My 18 f250 has by far the best engine braking down the mountain with tow haul and wxhaust brake. Its an 8% grade for 5 miles. I only have to hit the brakes once. The ford tows just like the ram with low end torque, its just got a way better trans. The 2011 2500 dmax, you have to floor it around to tow as it has no ass on the bottom end, but once it's in it happy 2800-3000rpms it will pull any grade. There is on hill that is 18% grade, and I said that correct, the ram cant even touch it, the ford actually stops and wont go any more 1/2 the way up. The GM actually pulls it all the way through! Say what you want but I pull with all f250s, 2500s, and I rank gm and Ford equal. Ram a no go.

How easy is it to work on or how easy is it to do maintenance. The cummins is an old design engine and cast iron and seems like would be .ore bullet proof. I've heard the gmc and ford have aluminum heads. If a trucks ride is slightly better but the other truck is more reliable, I pick reliable over anything. Why not add in a review how to change oil, the transmission fluid. Maybe take a look at the design of the engine and transmission.

As usual the duramax is the best engine and ride, too bad GM gave it a cheap interior. It's crazy how GM hasn't improved it after seeing Ram steal their customers over the last 2 years. Most people judge a vehicle by its interior and exterior appearance and the Ram wins by a mile over GM and Ford.
