The ram doesnt have more grunt down low. 1000lbft is less than 1050lbft. All three diesels have the peak torque @1600rpm. The ford is the fastest because the torque is what is doing the work and it has more torque from 1600 to 2800. Which all three trucks hp ratings are @ 2800. The reason the GM with less peak torque beats the Ram(910 VS 1000) it's the gearing advantage. At the hp ratings the ford has the most leverage
    475hp@2800 = 890lbft
    445hp@2800 = 835lbft
    400hp@2800 = 750lbft
Now the reason people feel that the Ram has the most torque, is called torque rise. It's the fact that torque is doing the work. As the rpms fall the ram has a larger difference in torque(ability to do the work) so it keeps pulling "harder". What most people(almost all people) fail to understand is what hp actually is. It's just a rating of how fast work gets done. NOT HOW MUCH!!!! All three trucks did the same work 30k trailer, bit the slowest was the lowest Rated HP truck(just like 90% of the tests in the past) the strength is in the torque, and the torque is the limitation on how much work can be done. The torque can be manipulated, not the hp. That's why the GM in First gear has 445hp at 2800 and 14400lbft@1600(910lbft x 4.64:1 x 3.42:1 =14400lbft) but not 7061hp at 2800 in first. Hp is a rating and torque is the force doing the work.
The simple way to explain this is here
    3.5EB
    450hp@5000=451lbft
    6.7 powerstroke(2018-19)
    450hp@2800=844lbft
    8.9L Cummins ISX 9
    450hp@2200=1074lbft
    12.7L Detroit Series 60
    450hp@1900=1243lbft
    14.8L Cummins ISX15
    450hp@1600=1477lbft
All 5 engines are rated the same power but on their own at their rated power(without gear manipulation) they all could do the same amount of work just at sized loads(ISX15 would be 3.27 time heavier than the 3.5EB) and vise-versain order for the EB to move the load the cummins does it would need a 3.27:1 gear reduction box before the transmission, hp doesnt change with gearing because it's a CALCULATION.
My volvo D13 is rated 500hp@1700rpm/1850lbft@11-1350 but the torque band is where all the work is done
    Volvo D13
    1850lbft@1100=387hp
    1850lbft@1200=422hp
    1850lbft@1300=457hp
    1850lbft@1350=475hp
    1800lbft@1400=479hp
    1750lbft@1500=499hp
    1650lbft@1600=502hp
    1550lbft@1700=501hp
    1400lbft@1800=475hp
    1250lbft@1900=452hp
The pattern in the data shows how the "rating" is a calculation.
How can 200 lbft(1550 and 1750) be the same power at differen speeds. Because the engine can do that amount of work at a different rate of speed. The engine pulls a hill way better in a lower gear where there is more torque(because manipulation) 1850 is huge compared to 1200 and so is the 1200rpm vs 1900rpm. One is clearly more capable. If you were to have 1850lbft@1900rpm it would be 670hp you can get these D13s in marine applications with 1000hp@2400rpm(2188lbft) that's a vastly different engine than a truck engine

I think if people could see 3 charts of Torque & HP, what you're explaining is there is more "area under the curve" for the Ford, which is why it had the fastest time. i don't favor one brand over another; my dad is Ford for life - we pulled a trailer all over the US together & he LOVED catching other trucks on hills & outpolling them or die trying. My Father in-law drives a Cummins & that torque-rise you described is REAL. I really like how it feels when you drive it. Personally, I drive an L5P duramax and rarely pull but still find all this stuff fascinating.

@@jamms2966 I feel the ram will be more competitive with the 9 spd Allison or the 8 spd ZF trans Andre was talking about on tflnow yesterday. But the limitation will still be the 750lbft@2800(400hp) vs the Ford 890lbft@2800(475hp) on every hill. It will perform better than the GM especially in the lower and mid-band, where it already shines, even better with a 4.10 axle

People still hauled way over loaded back in the 90's. They didn't run 3.50 rear end gears. They were running 4.10 or lower. 30,000 pounds on a 1 ton truck is extremely heavy though. Most people hauling that much weight are not doing it with an f350 or 3500 ram or gm. They would probably have a 5500, f650, or a regular 18 wheeler.

I'm just saying, in every single head to head test I've ever seen the Cummins compared to the Powerstoke its always a couple of ticks behind, not that it really matters, these trucks are so grossly overpowered that it doesn't really matter which you buy, because it will tow good enough for you, and if won't you don't need a pickup, you need a semi.

For what its worth, to all the people who claim the ram/ Cummins is most reliable, let me share my observation on a trip last month from colorado to california up and over the rockies on the same highway this test was done on. And before anyone says im a fan boy, let me tell you now i dont own any of these trucks and dont care who won what, this is purely an observation over the 3,000 mile trip. I did not see 1 single ford or gm pulled off the road with the hood up. But i did see 3 Rams/Cummins pulled over with hoods up. And just for the hell of it, my wife and i started counting trucks just to see which brand had more on the road. My wife counted rams while i counted fords because that seemed like the closest race. But the number of fords on the road did in fact double the number of rams that we saw (we included half tons as well as 3/4 and one tons and even f450-f550 and 4500-5500's). I will say this, the 3 rams pulled over with hoods up did have large 5th wheels attached. And the number of trucks towing with big trailers between the two brands were close to the same even though there were twice as many fords total on the roads. So percentage wise more rams were towing, but there was 3 broken down (which we didnt count, only counted vehicles driving). Pure unbiased observation, and that is it. Say what you will

If the Ford can maintain that level of power output without getting hot, then it really is the 2020 king of the hill. And only time will tell, but given the partial redesign to Powerstroke, I wonder how the long term reliability will be? I think Ford's PCM programming is much better the other two seem to reduce boost for sustained WOT therefore reducing power output. Don't know about the GM but Ram was running around 20psi and the Ford was pushing 30psi. I think the Ford's computer takes ambient temp into account and since it was cold allowed for higher boost because the fan could easily reduce temp 10-20 degrees in a few seconds. Either way Ford ruled the day again, as they say the best never rests.

So the only component missing is the a spot for the micro SD card to record the footage like on The Blackvue DR900S-2CH. While the manufacturers are it, they might as well integrate the Haul Gage (HaulGauge measures tongue weight, pin weight, payload, and gross combined weight in real-time with an OBD-II connector that communicates wirelessly via Bluetooth with an app on your iPhone or Android device.) that we currently have to plug into the OBD port. And the smaller cummins 6.7 spins higher. Love my volvo D13 only time if ever over 1800rpm is when you pull the max engine brake control at 53mph, drops from 12th to 9th gear and hits 2250rpm. • @jnk26
      @jnk26 Před 4 lety +6

@@doddgarger6806 Dodd Garger well everyone boasts about the Cummins low end grunt, why would you want to spin the poor thing above the peak hp of 2800? Seems like it's a smart thing to do to a $10-15k engine. Let me guess it will last a million miles at 3100rpm as well? I know for a fact that 13 litre engine that are beat on(hot rodded) dont make 750k, let alone a million. On other points, I seem to know what in talking about and an engine that has more hp at said rpm will have more torque as well(be cause torque at rpm is horsepower)
      400hp@2800rpm=750lbft of torque
475hp@2600rpm=959lbft of torque. Now this being stated the both the V8s have the high rpm advantage, more torque means there is more leverage to do the work. What I said about the Ram was I dont like the way it sounds at high rpm(I consider 2200 high rpm) because I spend 14-16 hours a day at 1300rpm, I have always disliked the sound of a small I6 engine(under 12L is small in the real world). It you look at it the Duramax@910lbft w/3.42 and the 10spd, is just as capable as the Cummins@1000lbft w/4.10 and the 6 speed. Given this is the gearing manipulating the torque. The GM is on par with the "better" Cummins. What you feel is called torque rise. As the engine lugs back the amount of leverage goes up(750lbft@2800 rises to 1000lbft@1800) the V8s dont have as dramatic torque rise(959lbft@2600 only rises to 1050@1600 in the Ford) so the gain of 250 lbft in the cummins gives you the illusion of better power. When ultimately the Ford and GM pull through it at the hp rating
445hp@2800=835lbft which is more that rams 400hp@2800=750lbft. Remember torque exists without hp but hp doesnt exist without torque, it's just and equation. If you truly believe that a less powerful, less torquey engine is stronger, fools on you. There is a reason the Ford beat the almost identically geared GM up the hill(140lbft at the bottom end, and 124lbft at the top end), by almost a minute and a half, the Ram just tied the GM with a considerable axle advantage 4.10 vs 3.42, and the deficit of gear manipulation(6spd vs 10spd)

Great video, would love to see Dodge with a 10 speed!
only complaint.... shouldn't be going off the custer for fuel consumption.

The reason the new GM's buck this year, is because they moved the 5th wheel center point slightly behind the rear axle. My father just bought a GM 3500 and hauls a 45' camper and hates it. Traded his 16' GM 2500 that never bucked. It was so bad he took the truck back and GM told him they moved the hitch back this year.
