  • It's been a trusty tool for sure, years of faultless service. This trusty old Makita rechargeable angle grinder has been showing it's age recently & yesterday, after hours of work finally gave up the ghost completely.
Been the inquisitive chap that I am I wanted to take a look, just so I know what cause the demise of this old friend.
A quick tear down, visual inspection & some simple testing soon identifies the problem.
Watch out for the follow up video showing the repair & testing of this most excellent power tool.

Great hearing and watching you, "Salvageable" EXACTLY! I'm same way, get joy out of getting to the failure and repairing without cash is the funnest for me.
Been using mine 10 years no trouble, just thinking maybe check the gearbox lube, and found your very enjoyable presentation.
I've modified the new 5 amp batteries to fit all my older tools, so I'm watching the heat on extended duty.
    thanks Brother!

The armature coming out and not hanging up on the carbon brushes was a clue. The brushes should be removed first when cleaning or repairing other parts.

Those Metabo grinders are damn good. I worked in a fan shop and we had a whole stable full of them. They will eat disk after disk and keep on chugging. Tripped the thermal over load giving all they would suffer and they always came back to life.
Side note: I have always heard Metabo pronounced with a long O (boat) not the double oo (book)

A word to the wise to all out there, as soon as a power tool plays up, pull the brushes out and have a look.
Most of the damage is done by the arching if you continue to use it after the first signs of a problem.
Metabo is good stuff. They also do cordless grinders. All there grinders have a good reputation.

Hello Andy from down south in Christchurch NZ, I too swear by Makita and have been abusing the 18V brushless grinder model DGA506 for years. Im in heavy mechanic work and abuse mine with cutting more than I should and flappy/grinding disks most days and it somehow survives (chugs through a 5amp battery in no time on heavy work though) If your brushed one does finally give up the ghost ild highly recommend upgrading to the brushless Makita grinder. Keep up the great videos mate.

Check you’ve got power to those brushes before you start ordering parts.!!! 240v makita grinders are generally bullet proof, if you found it under powered from the off !! It may have been faulty new!! 5” disk without a gaurd !! Means watch your grip and your knuckles!!! Also leaning on a grinder means it pulls slot of amps and heat before it bogs, I have that same model and found that little battery/ motor protection module to be the weak link.!!!! Blowing grinders out with compressed air now and again keeps that “ CRUD” build up down to a minimum but you really should pull them apart and do a bit of preventative maintenance now and again..!! My biggest gripe with modern power tools is the cost of parts/ especially brushless units which generally aren’t worth repairing once the motors or controlllers fail…..( Makita Dss680. BL - £180. Control box/stator £120. Madness!!!

I have this exact model. Fully charged batteries and the makita keeps cutting out if I apply mild cutting pressure and the red light flashes and it shuts off. Cannot make any serious cuts. Whats they problem u think?

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  Před 4 lety

I think it's most likely that your battery pack has lost capacity. The slight load is pulling the voltage down & that's what the Tool is sensing to trigger the red light. I had the same issue when I used an old battery. I think it's time to buy new one & make it a genuine Makita battery as it'll work & last much longer than the cheaper aftermarket brands.
      Cheers Andy

You let that run for too long on worn out brushes, that is what caused the arcing. Having been in metal bashing for forty odd years I have found by trial and error that Metabo power tools are the only ones that last, back in the 70's Wolf were very good and Scintiller were best but Bosh took them over and slowly they became Bosch branded and absolute crap. So if you go shopping for new tools get Metabo.

    Please help me.
    I also have a MAKITA BGA 452, but I have a problem.
When the machine is running, vibrations are felt, the whole machine shakes, but when I squeeze it with my hand in the middle or near the end, the vibrations are reduced.
Do you know why this happens?
I replaced the brushes, the other parts look good.
I tried the machine and without the head, the vibrations are felt again. So there is a problem inside the machine itself (rotor or whatever).
PLEASE HELP IF SOMEONE KNOWS OR HAS HAD A SIMILAR PROBLEM.

Look up grinder accidents. If you are not able to buy a 5 inch grinder for your 5 inch disc you should not get any grinder in the first place.
