Makita 18v angle grinder rebuild with new brushes & holder - will it work?

  • Following on from the previous video where we disassemble the grinder to diagnose why it had been loosing power & sometimes even stopping....
    Makita supplied the replacement parts next day which was fantastic service so since the parts are now in hand & that I need this grinder for use with the workshop steelwork project we best get it fixed immediately...
    Previously I haven't really 'serviced' any of my rechargeable power tools, though this failure has certainly highlighted to me the importance, just like with vehicle, to carry out routine maintenance to ensure you get the best life from your tools.
    Given the wide range of Makita power tools I have now I'll no doubt be doing a few more videos like this one!

    Kinda late but that armature is burnt and will heat up much quicker, and melt the new brush ring again. Armatures for this grinder are not expensive (around 20 30 euro) but also that grinder now cost around 100 euros to get a new one. That dga452 is great but only for light work, grinding metal with it will burn the motor quickly for heavy work you need a brushless makita. The ring thing on the wire is a capacitor so the tool dosent mess up radio waves around it.The good thing about that one is its the fastest of all makita LTX grinder all other only spin up to only 8500 RPM. Nice video

    Great machine you have! I just saw a lot of complains about DGA504 makita grinder which is brushless but burn the estator really easy.

    Be cautious using sandpaper to clean the commutator contacts on the armature. Too rough can cause the carbon brushes to wear down too fast . Good fix . Cheaper than a new grinder 👍🏻👍🏻

    The reason for the more rough operation and more noise is because the brushes need to 'seat' with the commutator. The brushes will wear and the commutator will smoothen itself after some use, so better do a 'break-in' before doing difficult tasks.
    The black ring on the brush housing is called a 'ferrite core'--they are used to absorb and reduce interference with other devices, as motors always make some kind of electromagnetic signal.

    You might rewind the wire thats not big difficoult thing to do , with micrometer measure the enamel wire size and count the turns abd solder it.

    Hey! How can i remove the SPIRAL BEVEL GEAR 19 at the end of the armature to replace bearings? Thx in advance!

    Just a small observation when the iron fillings get inside and mix with the grease won’t that make a lovely grinding paste in the head oh and it’s a ferrite ring to cut electronic interference

      Hmmm....good point. I'll pull the bevel drive off once I have finished the current steelwork & take a look.

      @@AndyMechanic just pack the insides ALMOST full of grease and it will be good, too little grease fills up with iron dust fast and creates grinding paste. when you have a lot of grease, the gears are always lubricated and do not produce iron dust.

    CAN YOU HELP ME MATE MY MAKITA CORDLESS GRINDER KEEPS BURNING THE BRUSHES AMD BRUSH HOLDER THANKS

    • @AndyMechanic
      @AndyMechanic  Před 3 lety

      Hi Aaron, it may be that some of the windings in the armature have overheated & lots their insulation. This would reduce the resistance of the winding & it will draw more current creating extra heat in the brushes & armature. I'd pull it apart & inspect again....
      Hope this is of help
