What The Hell Is Happening To Jack Grealish?

  • Manchester City made Jack Grealish the most expensive player in the history of the premier league, but the return on the pitch so far has been poor. Grealish has been constantly injured and unable to show all his talent on the pitch. To add insult to injury, he’s been making headlines for his off-field antics. What the hell happened to Jack Grealish?

    Speaking as a Villa fan - the entire system at Villa was built around giving him the ball deep into our half and letting him carry it forward, and then making the right runs to open up space and passing lanes. At City, he's just a cog in a system that doesn't allow him to carry the ball all that much (his biggest strength) and he is constantly facing two lines of defence. He will come good once he adapts but I don't think Pep will ever get the "best" out him because the system just isn't to his strengths. If he'd gone to Liverpool or even Chelsea he'd have absolutely torn it up I'm sure.

  • @mahbluebird
    @mahbluebird Před 2 lety +36

    Honestly I don't think he's been *that* bad. If you look at the xG and xA charts, he's far underperforming both of them, according to understat.
    He's been getting an average of around 0.52 xG/A per 90, which is about on par with/not much lower than what he put up at villa last season (0.59). It's also more than Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Emile Smith Rowe, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, on par with Bukayo Saka, and not far behind Bruno Fernandes, Michail Antonio, Jarrod Bowen.
    Now it's fun to pretend that he's an underperforming flop, and to be honest I don't think he was worth anywhere near the 100m he cost (that's English hype for you) but he's not doing worse than he did at Villa.

Didn't have the best first season, but since then has been one of Manchester City's best players. There are immediate expectations thanks to the immense price tag, which isn't really his fault, he was worth a lot to Aston Villa. DIFFICULT when you leave a muggy mid table side like Villa, where EVERYTHING was centred around Grealish, to playing for Man City, who are one of THE best sides in the world. For a manager, that basically dominates, and is ruthless and imperious. Jack probably gave it the big 'un when he initially signed, but now knows, that a start in the first team is by NO MEANS a given for him now.

    Honestly hes not been a bad player. The games hes played, especially recently have shown that. Hes slotted in and looked pretty well at home in the team and shown some moments of flair and talent. The only issue that people hold over his head is the price. For someone who realistically has a value of 50mil hes been good. The 100mil i believe wasnt just city throwing the money at Villa to make sure they got their man, but rather a clause written into his contract that a champions league club would have to reach to activate. TIFO has a video on it I think but its really interesting to see how it barely ever comes up that it was a release clause

    I think he needs time to adapt...
    There is no doubt about his talent and im sure he will shine soon, but Pep won't get the best out of him , cause the system does not fit his characteristics. He he a pure playmaker and City plays with a deep lying playmaker( Fernandhino, Pedri), they don't use a number 10 or what we call a playmaker ... he needs to adapt and change his style to suit Pep's system! Adapt either as an "in and out winger" or a box to box midfielder like De Bryune and Silva did...

He's a dribbler though and thats what helps him create. A pep system isn't mad for dribblers. Everyone has a certain job they partake in... in a Pep system.

It saddens me when I see players leave clubs where they are critical for massive clubs where they rotate in and out of the lineup. Grealish may win trophies but he will probably never top what he did individually with Villa.

    Imho, Jack Grealish is not a winger, he is more of a CAM or Second Striker. But City's already got KDB, no manager would bench KDB for anyone. Pep understands football million times better than me, maybe Pep wants Grealish to evolve as an all round attacker and step up when KDB retires.

  • @andybrogan8098

    Whenever guys like Grealish go to big clubs, they will struggle because they are not needed necessarily.
    City don’t need him. City need a guy who can play a specific role in the overall system. Grealish needed to go to a team that would be more centered around him.
    These players want to get paid before injuries can possibly destroy their career. I understand that. I understand they want to be on a winning team and be paid well. But city wasn’t the best place for him
