I was 14 years old. A friend who was heavily into music got the album on its day of release. He called myself and a few other friends into his house and played the record. We listened without speaking a word. We heard "A day in the life". When the record finished we all looked at each other amazed, each of us thinking "What just happened ?".
What had happened was the world had changed fundamentally and *forever* by hearing that song. I'm 67 now, and that moment is still one of the most profound events in my life. I listen to it now and it still takes my breath away.
It's probably the most important song ever written.

Paul visiting Marty Balin of Jefferson Airplane: [...] "I said to Paul ´so what's up with the Beatles?´. Paul casually pulled a cassette from his pocket and said " I happen to have a track from the new album". I pulled out my cassette player and popped it in. Out came A DAY IN THE LIFE. Imagine the first time hearing that song......and I was sitting there with Paul McCartney hearing it....I was stunned and knocked off the universe. I just praised the heck out of it...and him...and the Beatles and knew that it was part of a magnificent wave of new music led by the Beatles." Paul also visited Brian Wilson and Cass Elliot and the reaction was similar.

I was at work and this song came on via Spotify mix that a 29 year old female co-worker had played. I was surprised that she did not know the song. In my Beatles exuberance I explained to her how this was one of the greatest songs ever written and recorded. The response was an unresounding 'ehhh, it's okay' followed by the death knell phrase any Beatles enthusiast could hear. 'The Beatles are a bit overhyped' I had to forgive her ignorance as she was young and unfamiliar with everything The Beatles had influenced from recording to artists writing their own songs to even a band being a band and not a band with a single leader. I tried to explain the finer details of four-track recording and the masterpiece of Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club. While she understood intellectually, it didn't really phase her. Having started my recording with a single handheld cassette recorder progressing to overdubbing by linking 2 handheld cassette recorders then to finally getting my first tascam 424 four track, I understood reduction mixes etc etc (my favorite book had been The Beatles recording sessions by Mark Lewisohn -a MUST read for anyone interested in recording- and I absorbed every piece of text in it. So in a sense I had a great head start on how to use a four track efficiently)
I recall the first time I heard this song. I was 18 and was a little initiated in the Beatles but had never heard one of their albums yet. I moved in with my father and stepmother and she had the entire Beatles collection on LP. I put this album on and enjoyed it. When a day in the Life came on I was blown away. The haunting Melody of the opening verses.. to it's amazing crescendo... I was hooked.

I love your work. Being a huge Beatles fan myself since sun day nigh February 9th 1964, I truly feel your appreciation for the work of the group. Even referring to them as “a group” doesn’t seem to do them justice. They stood completely alone, to this day, as the preeminent RICK and roll musical movement of the century!
I listened to the tune from your new record album. Clearly derivative but clearly Beatlesque! What a wonderful place to derive from! For anyone to even say they hear The Beatles in your songs is without question something bands have been trying to capture just a glimpse of for the past 50 years! So, if anyone says that your music is derivative, simple say “thank you mate!” And always take it as a compliment of the highest order!
Good luck my friend in everything you do!
    Peace,
    Rick

The musicality of A Day In The Life was what made me want to learn piano and sing publicly. It also inspired me to want to learn studio technology. The Beatles pushed the techniques in an analogue studio to its limits and then some.

Before watching this video, I actually did signal out Ringo's exceptional drum playing on this track particularly.
I remember the first time hearing this song with a crystal clear memory.
FYI, you can loop it if you combine the two crescendos for one continuous song.
