Will A $20 Air Cooler Keep My Van Cool?

With warmer weather approaching, we should be looking at ways to stay cool. There are lots of inexpensive air conditioners or coolers being sold. And I bought one to try. It was about $20 and I bought it at Grocery Outlet, the discount grocery store chain.
The packaging of this one is labeled as a “cooler”. But other brands label their products as “air conditioners”. I prefer to call these types of devices “Swamp Coolers” as they cool by adding moisture to the air.
I waited until the weather warmed up and then let this cooler run in my van as I went about my day. It was only 80°F today but it was a good test.

My name is Scott and in 2015, I bought a Ram ProMaster City to live in. Even though I didn’t know much about RV’s and campervans, I set about building the van out as a minivan camper. And in April of 2016, I moved into my minivan full time.
Over the years, I’ve learned you don’t need to have a big skill set to build your own campervan. And that living as a minimalist and utilizing solar power can be a less expensive way to live. I’ve also learned that a minivan can be a very comfortable home.

lol , "i rarely ever drive while im sleeping" epic
I know. He’s so subtle about his sarcasm. 🤣🤣🤣
😆
HAHA, Logic.
I love that he qualifies it by saying "back here"...he could still drive while sleeping. 😉
Glad to know you don't drive while you sleep (or vise versa). Stay cool!
Love the humor in this episode, thanks for that!
Subtle is funnier.
Dude your subtle humor is great. Your way of speaking and your cadence and tone are very similar to Dr Todd Grande. 👍
I am an hvac tech and half of the reason an A/C works is that it is a dehumidifier. You are in a dry area so you may benefit from a bit of moisture but for the vast majority might even want to go with some kind of dehumidifier with a fan if you can spare the energy and that in itself will make the space more comfortable .
Yes, the reason why I repeated the fact that these don’t work in humid areas the three times was to hopefully let everyone know that these types of coolers have a limited use
@patrickvernon4766. .. Do you know if the portable acs on wheels work?
@@bleuskye8124 sorry to bud in here but Rolling Earthship installed a 12v A/C on his van not long ago. He has videos on the install and also talks about the A/C’s performance
@@StaticCamperVan Okay. Thanks. I'll check it out.
Scott I appreciate your sensitivity to not record people. I also feel it is an imposition to record others without their permission.
I love watching your channel because of your humor. Yes, it’s dry, but so is mine, and I totally get yours. I also love watching your channel because you’ve been spending so much time in Santa Rosa, my home town of 67 years. I love your comments and opinions on various aspects of the community and surrounding towns. I hope you stick around a bit longer!
Scott, you know what is so popular are vans that are black. Black vans and warmer summers, maybe not such a good idea. I like that your van is white with a ventilation system and no windows that let the heat in. You've got a good set-up. A little air conditioning would really help as well. Your a schmart cookie😊
Hello Scott...swamp coolers, when made well, are awesome.
Problem is, not very much of anything is actually made well anymore. Everything is made cheaply, and is priced expensively, which is the end result of greed, the incurable disease that is taking over the world.😢
❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️❄️
Sending you some snow flakes to cool you down. ❤
I'm
Unfortunate but true
My husband put ice water in his "cooler," and when it's hot outside, set a jar of water outside to heat up and make boiling quicker.
Thank you for another chill video. ❤😂 even though we have never been to... I love my Bodum Melior Gooseneck Water Kettle, 27oz. I don't use flames inside my Jeep Patriot or the Minivan. I have a bigger power station though and the kettle is 120V and pulls up to 1000w. Water boils in 2 to 5 min. I only have 100Watts of rigged solar, but the Bluetti AC180, power station recharges in less than 2 hours from about 50%. I don't have a fridge that I have to power though. I'm not full time either and I live in a place with both extremes of weather and use my vehicles to get away from the extreme cold during the winters. I don't mind heat though... well as long as it stays below 100*F. It does that during the summer months on occasion here. If I didn't have responsibilities here I would not stick around here as much as I do... Thank you again for the video. Stay cool...
Excellent video as always! I do something to stay cool on extra hot days that I read in a blog. At first I turned my nose up at it and said I wouldn't like it. HOWEVER, I got desperate one hot day and tried it and now I always do it on those crazy days. The blog said to dampen your shirt with water. Not soaking so you want to ring it out almost dry again. Then wear it and sit in front of a fan. The blog was from someone who lives in desert climates. It works sooooo good. I love it now on crazy hot days that sneak up on you. Sometimes you cant even tell it is wet by looking at it. Maybe if you ever get too un comfy you will try it? Sorry for the long comment but I am long winded and it cant be helped. 😁
Absolutely works! I do it when my A/C can’t keep up with the weather.
@@julieblaha4960 It is a life saver. So glad I came across that blog! 😅
You can also wet a bandanna or scarf and wrap across forehead or around neck. Useful in Phoenix weather !

Longer cable has more resistance resulting in drawing more power. Getting a thicker gauge cable should help reduce resistance.
Thank you. I appreciate the explanation.
Ooh, beautiful trees at the end! 👍🏻🌳🤩
Yes those were pretty flowers too.
hahahaha definitely didn't expect this when I'm trying to learn more about coffee. "we've never actually gotten to the moon..." You couldn't care less when mentioning this. So funny🤣
😂 Love your style Scott!
Yes using extension cords can add to how much your using 😉😘
Aloha Scott - your sense of humor cracks me up 😂
Oh, I was most serious here. Most serious.
Thanks for sharing Scott, I always find your videos very relaxing.
Same here, great way to unwind
Mint chip ice cream…yum! One of my favorites! 👍🏻
Haha, I literally commented this RIGHT before you talked about it! 😂
Haha. I figured it would be a mint chip hater who dropped a comment
Yum! ❤
I absolutely LOVE mint chip ice cream!!!❤ It's the best - even better than chocolate. And I love chocolate too. I never could figure out why others don't like it but that's ok Scott, it's just more for us!!
Love your videos and appreciate you so much. Have a beautiful day, every day!🌞
Mint chip is my favorite ❤
A lot of the heat in a van (or building, for that matter) is the vehicle and the stuff in it that's at the ambient temperature. You can cool the air but everything else is still putting out heat. My method for dealing with heat is pointing the front of the van north (away from the sun) opening the driver window, the side door and one of the back doors. If there isn't a natural breeze I turn on a fan. And if that's not enough, I too go to where it isn't as hot. Stay cool, amigo.
The Pacific is calling
On my way.
You have pointed out a good method for keeping cool in a parked vehicle. As an OTR driver in the summer I will hang a jacket out the window facing the sun to keep the sun off the glass. It dramatically lowers the in vehicle temperatures.
Oooh, extra pretty ending. I'm also a fan of "i rarely ever drive while i'm sleeping" - and I've started to think about adding ventilation to my cargo van, so I was pleased for this reminder of your drain approach to that hole in the floor. Nice update!
Your humour is so dry 😂 I love it. Great video. Claire x
We do the same with our Class A. Hang curtains to block the front heat or cold.
The hole in the floor for ventilation was brilliant! TY! I enjoyed this. Happy days!
Swamp coolers work well with ice placed in the water tub.... makes the place cool quicker....
Are you saying that you disagree with what I said?
I may not watch it all at once but eventually I watch the video until the end
Thanks for another great video Scott, love when you throw in humor. 😊
Love your channel Scott! Thanks for doing another coffee chat.
I love watching your channel, I love coffee like you, and the problem for me is that I live in an area where the weather is hot most of the year. If the weather is hot, drinking hot coffee becomes less enjoyable, and switching to drinking (brew Coffee) is more enjoyable. I wish you a good morning and an enjoyable day.
I live in very arid desert near death valley ca. Evaporative coolers work great here in our average of 9% summer humidity. But even if the rain is coming, or something, & our humidity gets a just little bit higher, the swamp cooling actually makes it worse. To me, way-high heat without humidity, is much easier to live in than even moderate heat with humidity.
I love your videosw you inspire me to let go of the baggage and live more simply x
Another stellar vlog Scott.
Thank you
I stayed and watched video Scott glad I did I really wanted to get a usb extender didn’t know they made them . I will have to look. Anyway fantastic as always. Lee 🤙
Wonderful video!!! Sooooo many things to comment on but I'll stick with Mint Chip Ice Cream!! ALWAYS my first choice~!! Never in my life have I heard of anyone not liking it! Hope you can stay cool!! Best wishes coming your way!!
Scott I love and appreciate your wit and your humor lol great reviews too by the way 👍
I have a very small Comfort Spectrum regarding Heat versus cold now that I'm 57 years old. So far the hottest it's been here in northern Wisconsin was one day, it reached 70° and personally I don't need anything warmer than that ... I was getting too warm.
....now that everybody else is gone....LOL Lots of funny little tidbits throughout on this one, so I enjoyed listening twice to catch it all. Education + humor. Classic Static!
A combination Swamp Cooler directed at myself while enjoying ice cream are ideas that suit me fine.. enjoy keeping cool and comfy in your really neat van.
Mint chip is my favorite 🍦 Great choice, Scott 👍
Thanks for another informative video. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream too. Thanks and take care.
When it comes to ice cream. My fav is by Braums it's Cherry, pecans and vanilla ice cream. Yum 😋
I appreciate you being upfront with it lol for some reason I'm still watching the video 😂
Yup, they are much more efficient in dry climates. Your point about having it directly on you is well made - in your van, that should be pretty easy to do. Also interesting observation about the water heater - good to know. That makes sense really - making things hot is expensive, so limiting it's use makes sense. Be well.
Just a side note - today, 4/18 - I got a 12 oz package of sustainably grown, high elevation, organic, single origin, beans from Peru today at Aldi for $5.99. I haven't tried it yet but it smells great = it is however, a medium roast, but does not smell burned at all. Brand name: Simply Nature.
@thizizliz think I’ve tried that one but it’s been a while
I drink coffee when it is hot. Nice to see you today.
❤ Good Evening Scott 🌌🌻This little Air Cool is Awesome 👍I have one & use it in my Bedroom, can't have Direct Air-conditioning on myself while sleeping, kills my Back ! But instead of using ice or water,i get Freezer Packs & put them in the filter area & you get a Dry Cool fow from the Fan🤞✌️👌🌞🙏🙌🇺🇲🌟🌅Have Great Night!🤩✨🌠
I actually talked about adding ice in this vlog
If you have Freezer packs , there's no water to melt& stay cooler longer, then just replace them with another Frozen Pack 👍You put the packs in where the Filter is!👍Thank you for sharing all your Adventures! Love to watch them, because I don't think I will ever go as far in places that you have,so I enjoy watching 👍🤞🇺🇲🙌🙏🌟👌🤩🌞🌅
Very solid introduction! Well played!
Your new lighting is Very Good.
Enjoyed the video tonight... Thank you.
Beautiful park Scott! Well kept! Mint chocolate chip sounds wonderful but most any ice cream is acceptable! You have modified your vanilla to work well. Excellent! Sorry I have been AWOL, was dealing with a death in my family. Cancer is a horrible disease! Good Luck Scott and thank you for a wonder channel!!🇺🇸
I hope you’re recovering Jaime
Been full time for the last 3 yrs, and ur correct about if u want to stay cool best is to be on the west coast. I aways thought that these mini swamp coolers were a waste of money. When the temp is above 80 degress in my rig there is 3 things i do. Park in the shade, put up shades for front window, and pull out my oscillating usb fans. Also I usually stay away from drinking coffee during the summer and drink more water. See ya down the road.
Scott I think you are the Good Humor Man Lapping up that Chocolate Chip Mint Ice Cream 🍨🍦 yummy 😋
👍🤩💝I’m glad you shared that small swamp” cooler. I was curious about those. I’m glad you rarely “drive while sleeping” 😂.
😩Regarding that mint chocolate chip ice cream…..I tried but I never could join the fan club. One time I tried to force myself to like it by eating a whole pint….it made me gag. 😩😂 I think people either love it or really dislike it. Eat what you like.
👍I agree move to a cooler or warmer area rather than be too hot or cold. Safe travels. 💝
Lol, luv the humor

My favorite ice cream is coffee ice cream. When I can't get it, instant coffee sprinkles on vanilla is good. As always, good ideas and entertainment. Best idea this time to try out is driving while I'm sleeping 😂
Hello Scott, you always make me laugh with some of your answers, specially that you rarely drive when you’re sleeping in the back😂😂😂you have a great sense of humour to deterred the haters 👍✌️🫶👋keep on Vaning🌹
Yum. My grandkids and I always get mint chip icecream.
I always watch to the end. They are always great, and entertaining. Of course if you put out a video on watching paint dry, you'd figure out how to make it great!!
I’m sorry, I don’t have any painting projects anytime soon
You static van has a fan man fantastic
Scott this is a good video if you in joyed the ice cream that all it matters right I bought a air cooling machine just like you did got mine from Walmart for 19.99 and it didn’t do very much so through it out in joy your coffee cheers have a great week here from Ontario Canada ❤️❤️❤️❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦😎
Seriously, the coolest youtuber as far as campers go. lol
No, this cooler only works moderately well
@@StaticCamperVan ahahahaha!
I'm in Vancouver BC, so PNW. I call them swamp coolers, too, and I've avoided them because the summers get humid enough... Although not as bad as the Great Lakes region nor the southeast US.
Someone I know was raving about theirs, so on a whim I bought one of these $20 mini gadgets from Amazon and I'm really surprised how well it works! Having it blowing on me was MUCH cooler than just a fan.
On a completely unrelated note, I want to thank you SO MUCH for your video in the past about using Dr Bronner's (I can't remember if it was conditioner or hand lotion) on one's hair!
I can't find the hair cream locally and it's too expensive online, but it's essentially the same ingredients as the hand lotion LOL, just thinner. WHAT A GAME CHANGER! I inherited wiry, but fine, "floaty" hair and seriously must have spent thousands of dollars over the years trying to tame my poofy ends lol. Switched to Bronner's and PRESTO, situation resolved!! 🙀 If I didn't love you already, I certainly love you now!! 😂
You’re welcome. I can’t go without the Dr. Bronner’s hand lotion or my hair gets unruly
To kool , had one i. My hand yesyerday , same model as new one , at bimart. May go back n grab one now , also looking at mini ice cube makers , 🎉
I love the Straus mint chip and also the Dutch chocolate! I think they use less sugar than most which really brings out the flavor.
I tried that air cooler when I first bought my promaster city. It definitely didn't cool me off in a heat wave however it wasn't too bad blowing directly on my face
I am envious of you, because you can have coffee whenever you want. I can't tolerate more than 1 cup of coffee a day, or it will affect my sleep, in a negative way. I do like your videos though!
I have the Chillwell running on my desk right now and used it all last summer and it's great. I did put ice in it yesterday but not this morning and it's really cool. I no longer freeze the part you wet and put in the freezer because I don't think it helps that much but I love mine. :)
ah man the start was so funny haaaaaa. and the drive while your sleeping in the back haaaaa. mint chip is awesome.
This is kind of a personal joke. Several times people have told me that the floor vent is dangerous and I’ve responded with this line. Every single time the person has simply stared blankly back at me. It’s always hilarious
I sure love your videos.
Thank you
I grew up in west Texas and swamp coolers were all I knew in the day. They worked wonderfully well there! Now I live in north Texas and no way would it work here!
I subscribed a while back & watched you several times
really like your channel 😎
However; today very informational which help me with a few things like your curtains ❤

Cool video. 👍
My mini splits, at the hiuse, have a dehumidifier setting seperate from the AC setting. The humidity level makes a huge difference in how the air feels. Plus we've never had such high humidity here, so the house, and eveything in it, likes the lower humidity.
I've actually got one you add ice and water. It works well when directly on you or near you. It has fun LED lights also.
Buy some Tillamook Mint chip ice cream with thanks
Its so Cozy in your car .😍
Yes🥰 going on almost 5 years, I have a similar cooler as your old one and found that I set the filter in bleach water then dry out before using to get 2 extra summers, but eventually ripped out the filter fabric and woven some cut white fabric through the filter slides instead, still working, will probably replace it with one like yours if it ever stops working😅
Nice fix!
A few years ago I worked three jobs. I bought one of those little AC units. I would get a cup of ice from the store and fill the top with it. Made a big difference when you were sleeping in a black pick up with a black canopy.
The key to swamp cooler efficiency is to hv a vent window open ,even in my new motorhome , in install swamp cooler ,i even use them in Cambodia ,but bigger ones no problem with with humidity just leave a window open used the 60 yrs

It is best to carry more than one size of hammer, so if you need a bigger hammer you have one... PS it is not good to have a mechanic with the nick name "Bigger Hammer "...
I love dark chocolate mint chocolate but my fav ice cream is rocky road and jamocha almond fudge!
I hv never tried Trader Joes ice cream. I’ll have to give it a shot.
For some reason mint gives a cooling refreshing feeling so good choice for ice cream on a hot day
good to know these do work in some range of low humidity / moderate temps. if it gets hotter, could add personal spritzer spray bottle, more fans. and indeed for the most cooling power, the Pacific
I had to pause your video to make me a cup of coffee
You made the correct choice
In Australia we call them evaporative coolers .. they do work better with dry heat ..
I prefer Swamp Cooler
I use a very similar swamp cooler. In fact I have one on the side table next to my recliner chair and one next to my bed and one for a guest next to the couch. The filter thing with the sponges on mine come out so that they can be soaked in cold water and then set back in so it gives more cooler air.
In my small RV, I'm thinking about adding a 12v AC for summertime. That said, I do have a little USB rechargeable swamp cooler (with a water reservoir and ice packs) and it does help add some moisture to the dry air as well as cool us down over here in eastern Washington.
That TJ’s mint chocolate chip ice cream is incredible! I loved their vanilla chocolate chip but they stopped making it.
one of my favorite ice cream flavors too.

Mint chocolate chip, my fave!
I purchased one of those evap water cooler. But it didn't work so I purchased a 5000 btu air conditioner installed it in my back van door and worked beautifully
It's not a good idea to let AC blow directly on you. Why would a swamp cooler be different?
We had some extreme summers last couple years and i live on the 3rd floor of a building with no AC, all the heat collected up there and it got HOT. I found reflective in the windows blocked the sun well and a couple well placed fans kept air moving was just enough to stay comfortable. Also i thnk your body acclimates a bit and that hot weather doesnt feel so hot. I was suprised how well it felt , and felt bad for people who got used to AC all summer, if you let your body acclimitize and you get some good air flow, keep the sun out and that should do it. It kept me cool during some extreme heat here in the Great lakes region., Thankfully last summer wasnt so hot and looks like this one will be the same (thank you El Nino) that being said , a vehicle is a different story and im not sure how just ventilation would do but i suspect might be just enough. Ive been practising living in a car before making the jump and could feel the heat the last few days as well and its not even warm yet, couldnt imagine it the dead of summer but i guess thats what happens when youre car is a greenhouse basically with all those windows, well most cars. The hybrid toyotoa priuses have this climate control everyone raves about just for this kind of situation, but not very spacious living.
These variants of the new one you got don’t drip water on the filter and only spray mist. What I found to be a huge help in the summer is pouring some water in that pull out tray the filter sits in so those little sponge pads leech it up and gives more of a swamp cooler like effect. It doesn’t look like it but the little ledges around the side allow it to do so, I find it lasts 3 hours or so and is a good boost before going to bed. Also that white on the old one isn’t mold just calcium buildup, I get rid of that with a little vinegar wash but replacements are still sold on eBay too.
Yes, I should have been clearer about this type needing to be wet first. But this particular cooler drips water between the fan and filter.
It was most definitely mold on the old filter. The growing fuzzy legs were the tip off
