I just looked those units up and man, they are expensive. I installed a Walmart $200 5,000 btu energy star window ac in my van in a rear window just next to my bed. It keeps the van ice cold and, only draws about 360 watts when the compressor is running, and about 60 watts when it is only using the fan. I run it in eco mode, and the compressor does not kick in that much. Some have said that since it was designed to be used in stationary applications, like a house, it will not last more than a few years in my van. I have been on the road full time for almost a year and, so far, so good. But, at $200, I can buy 8 of them for the price I saw for the roof mount. I only have 720 watts of solar on my van running through a Bluetti AC200P and it worked great last year in the Kentucky heat. Obviously not as hot as where you are in Baja, but it was near 100, and humid for many days. The only thing I do not like about my setup is, my unit is 120 volt ac, and everything else in my van is dc. I do not like having the inverter in the Bluetti on as it takes power just to be on. Other than that, it has been working great so far. (Fingers crossed) I wish you and your family safe travels.
In A.A we have a belief that we say? Keep it simple! Don't complicate it!
Oh good grief! People and their comments about helping with the baby are just ridiculous! It’s so obvious that you two work things out together with him and share those responsibilities! You wouldn’t be able to travel together, let alone travel with a child, if you both weren’t sharing in the work!! But thanks again for pointing out how the world is full of busy bodies and armchair critics! 😂😂 y’all are doing a great job with your little boy and what a super cutie pie he is!! ❤ You can tell he’s about as happy as a child can be!! 🎉
We appreciate this comment ☺️thank you!
You’re probably my fav van life CZcamsrs! I’m quite young (teenager) and looking to travel England and Europe after I finish university in quite a few years (I’m very excited) ☺️
Thank you so much!!! 😊 we wish you the best! We would have loved to get started fresh out of university, we wish we started earlier!! 👍🏻👍🏻
@@MathersOnTheMap ah thank you, I’m looking forward to it so much!!!!!! 💗💗💗
In midst of my build. Thanks for the Velit update
You got it, hope it’s going well!
I bought mine after watching your install. I have it on a class C it is perfect
❤ yay! Tuesday video time!
Sorry it wasn’t a vanlife video!… back to travel video next week
You could’ve used that wave at the Canada tidal bore! 😁Thanks for answering my question. We pick up our sprinter in June and I HAVE to have cool air! I’m a fall winter guy and an AC that drops the temperature is VERY important. Velit definitely wins price wise and now performance wise! Power draw etc. is less important for me as I’m installing your victron and G3 system and I’ll go to shore power in a heat wave.
You should be good Rod! If you want the best performance for night time put it over the bed, if you want the entire van cooled equally put it in the middle 👌🏻
I went camping last weekend... I definitely am not setup for non winter camping 😂😂😂 bugs are a struggle and the mud everywhere!!
Hello from France 🇫🇷 you’re an incredible family 😍
Thank you!!! ☺️
Another great and informative video, man making Taylor push the stroller and carry the bag up the hill in that heat how could you lol. Looks like the AC works great when needed so that's gotta be good, it's 0 C here tonight so you wouldn't need AC . I liked your your answer to the question who controls the thermostat, Wyatt does lol. Keep the videos coming have a great week.
Thanks Garry! haha people are crazy! BRRRR I don't miss that cold cold weather. Wyatt seems to control a lot of things these days. 😜
@@MathersOnTheMap As a father of four (One set of twins) I can relate to that , but they are all grown up now and I have the grey hair to prove it LOL.
Now we know great video
This a great video. You are the first person that went on a detailed video on Velit AC. I have been looking at the roof Velit AC. If i go roof top I will lose my current fan (Fesair) and will only have the Veilt as my main fan. I have a Fesair that thing does not cool but the fans are really nice. Seems I could use the Veilt as both (main fan and AC). My other option is a under mount AC but the price tag Ouch, my wife would flat out murder me, then kill me. I trust your opion. I got the Wanderful bug screen off your suggestions
Appreciate that Andy! Velit had an under bench all in one AC (cheaper than roof mount) unit only challenge is ducting the external vents
The wanderful bug screens are great!!!
Just be aware that fan mode on most air conditioners (including Velit) do not draw air in or out like your Fesair fan. It only recirculates the air already in the van.
@@guitardoc99 just watched your van tour. great design really pretty van
You can put window tint on the display panel
Love this video
Thank you!
Best CZcams channle I have descoverd yet
Thank you Jeff!!!!
@@MathersOnTheMap Love the video idea you came up with
Hey! Thanks for answering my question. I meant does it keep up with your 3 current panels since you designed the system for 4 panels. But it looks like it did good. I currently have an AC powered air conditioner on my sprinter and have been considering changing everything over to DC.
That's what i figured after editing it, my bad! 4 panels definitely would do better. In an idea situation we wouldn't lose power when running it but with our solar setup that's not the case. Maybe if we had 680 watts of rigid panels since they are more efficient than these walkable ones? but I'm not entirely sure, more solar is definitely the answer though!
Hi MoM, Have you noticed any condensation inside or outside your van? I assume that with higher humidity, all ACs will have some condensation build up. Love your channel by the way. Inspired me to pay attention to Velit! Heavily considering it!
we did get condensation when we ran it with the doors open last summer while building the van. Haven't noticed it while using it properly in the finished build with doors closed
Thanks for responding MoM! Good to know. That’s reassuring if a van is properly insulated and window/doors are closed, there is no buildup of condensation. Love your build, by the way! Went ahead and purchased the Velit AC 12 V using your promo code. Going to also pick up a DIYvan AC bracket/adapter for a little bit more support on the roof.
Thank you for the review, nice video. Could you comment if this is a sponsored review or truly independent?
I'm going to guess sponsored without him revealing it. He looks like a typical influencer, squinty eye and all.
How is it sealed and how weather proof is it up on the roof?
does it need some maintenance like cleaning?
The vans are nice but the arctic no slide truck camper is so cool to me the a/c will determine if my lady friend even attemps to consider rolling out for ah beach giveaway she only lives .75 miles from her local beach really want this to work
I'm ready to go with the Velit. You mention a version with a dark face plate and 10% more powerful compressor. Is it available yet?
It looks like the black version is Already out with 8000 BTU. Unfortunately, it’s on backorder.
What do you think of the unit to replace the engine ac? My engine ac is not doing the job, real bad cooling and in for another very difficult and expensive repairs $$$$. Just go w/ a roof or under mounted ac unit be easy access for repairs. What do you think? !2volt system would be a game changer.
That is not a test. Try it at 100 degrees with 90 percent humidity
If you really wanna test it calm down South Texas when it gets to 112° of in the summer
Holy moly I'm getting one.
I NEED IT
haha do it!!!!
Took me a few days but I’m caught up on Tuesday’s video! I finally made a video lol!!!!!!! 👍🏼☘️🍺
Thanks for asking a question!!! Hope DC was great
Thanks for the inclusion Kevin. You and Taylor sure are doing it right. I loved Merl but this one is a piece of engineering meets comfort. Products sure have changed since just a few years ago when we started. We are heading to a Boondockers welcome site in northern Maine to catch the Eclipse and then going south for a few weeks.
It certainly has! I’m so jealous I want to see the eclipse that sounds awesome! Hopefully you guys don’t get pounded with all this snow coming your way! Safe travels and hope all is well!
I know you are liking the fixed bed, but I was wondering if you miss the large dinette space?
@@mainemorningwalk we have a nice table size in the front when Wyatt’s crib isn’t setup, but when we’re posted up we rarely take a part his crib so we don’t really have one. I feel like I’m so used to editing in odd positions anywhere that I don’t really think of it. But it would be nice!
Very nice! Just as a point of comment, please try to speak in watts. It will make more sense. The unit actually consumes watts. So your 30 amp draw at 12 volts, would be 360 watts. This is excellent. I assume your a 12 volt system. Just remember the classic 60 watt lightbulb as an example.
So true! Recently saw a video by an electrical engineer going off about how we should only be speaking in terms of watts and watt-hours.
cooling is simply math. Theres no magic fairy dust. If it's a low watt draw it means its a small unit, which it is. Never would it cool a van it actual hot weather.
What company is that battery pack from and can it charge a computer?

Great healthy breakfast from your other half. Those waves were killer. I think you have a powerful system there. Looks like it’s humming nicely. So necessary 🎉
The waves we're gnarly I wish the gopro did more justice! thank you!
@@MathersOnTheMap looked great were you using a mouth mount?
87 is cooking? That is our temp at 10 PM. Ca. here, summer temps 95 to 115.
FR!!!! im in PR and its scorching hot and we are just starting summer lol
Order a Velit 12 volt air conditioner and they said their entire container shipment got lost!!??? Very strange. Customer service not specific about delivery.
It was probably on the Dali
Never ever trust Velit. They took peoples money for their heaters and delayed shipment for over a year! They are simply importing chinese junk and putting their brand on it.
I wish people would understand AC is measured in BTUs. If you want the coolest air conditioner check the BTU rating not the brand. BTUs are also in direct relation to amp draw. So many people talk ECO mode has a lower power draw and yes it does because the AC isn’t really on and you’re not getting the same cooling. Therefore look for the highest BTUs and the lowest cost assuming the brand has a good reputation as I think for the most part these units are not repairable from a practical standpoint . I wish you had taken a temperature reading towards the front of the van I can almost bet it would be above 80 and if the unit was in the middle of the van you would be very uncomfortable in the bed in the daytime at least that’s my experience. That being said you guys seem to be having a great time. I’m jealous
I hear ya Michael, I have a BTU comparison in the very first video we made (the one where I installed it). And I agree, put the AC where you optimally want it, we rely on the AC at night over our bed rather than during the day and we can always hangout in the bed during the day if it's really hot and raining out!
Our thermostat is in the middle of the van so the front would be a bit warmer and the back would be obviously be more chilly.
Actually cooling is also measured in watts. Not every where uses BTU
Fan mode only circulate the air coming from the van back into the van. There is no air exchange from inside to outside.
Actually all settings do that.
Hi . Is this AC unit working through your inverter ? I mean 110v. Thank you
Nope, it's 12 volt no inverter needed.
@@MathersOnTheMap where did you buy it ?
@@wvieira981 Directly off their website, here's our affiliate link, velitcamping.com/motm use coupon code MOTM for $50 off
Appreciate the video. Could you comment if this is a paid review or is it truly independent review?
you can download sound level meters that measure decibles and are pretty accurate for your phone. Just an FYI if you did want to include that information in the future.
I suggest a worthy addition in helping the air conditioner’s effectiveness in providing a homogeneous temperature in the van is addition of a couple of sirocco fans. They are a great Canadian product. Very effective, quiet and low amp draw. Can also be used before having to consider turning on AC or leaving them on when AC is turned off at night to circulate air. Great Channel, enjoy your adventure.
Can these units operate when the vehicle is moving?
yes it can!
@@MathersOnTheMap have you had it even on the highway while running?
Great healthy breakfast!
breakfast of champions! haha
@@MathersOnTheMap lol
What if it suddenly rain? Will rainwater leak inside while a/c on?
Yes
Nice video and even better location, BUT I have to point out there is something very inefficient with either your van insulation or the air conditioner.
So converting from F to C, seems the outdoor temp was 27C and after 2 1/2 hours of running the air con your van got down to 23C and you air con was set to 21C
Power consumption on your air con you showed on your Victron Cerbo GX to be 23A, BUT after taking away what your solar was contributing, your air con was pulling around 45A
Really 12V air conditioners are not worth it. You have to run very heavy cabling and compared to efficient inverter 240V air con units, 12V has no benefit.
We have a Dometic IBIS 4 air con. Our van is heavily insulated with 3M Thinsulate as well as a layer of 5mm sheet insulation over that.
When we run our 240V IBIS4 off battery using our Victron Multipluss II inverter, with the air con set to 21C and fan auto, it will only pull 30A.
So thats a 240V air con pulling 30A, compared to a 12V air con pulling around 45A. Even if you allow for say 10A power use for other appliances in your van, thats the the 12V air con pulling a good 35A.
So no benefit at all to using 12V air con compared to 240V air con.
We can get our van down to 21-22C easily within 1 hour of turning the air con ON on a hot day.
Awesome to see people using air con off grid so nice work on that. I am just not a fan of 12V air con, there are no benefits over an efficient 240v air con.
Also Dometic have released their new Freshjet air con's which are 17% more power efficient over the IBIS 4 that we use so even more of a case to just use 240V inverter air cons over 12V air cons.
Comments like yours are why I still watch CZcams. Any thoughts on the new eco flow portable heat/ac pump?
@@mertonallowicious The little portable units. To be honest they would not be my go to but I see a few positive reviews on new Eco Flow. We have tried other small portables in a small room and they were a waste, have not tried the Eco Flow.
I guess the issue is venting the heat and successfully sealing up the van to find somewhere to get the hot air outlet hose out the van. Anything is better than being hot !
I believe the 12 V and 120 V conversation is personal preference one. If you have access to shore power / plug-in campsites, 120 V makes sense. If however, you’re using your van for Off grid purposes and need plug-in options as well, then the 12 V option makes better sense. Mathew’s On the map seem to be In the latter camp. Just my honest opinion.
I’m building a slide-in for my ram pickup, so I don’t need any more btus than a small/medium van, it looks like the best option is still a small cheap 110 window unit running off a power station/solar (or shore power of course).I want to get a larger eco flow or Bluetti battery unit anyway, looks like the wave is overpriced for what you get, although I really like the vehicle alternator charger idea regardless
that is one of the loudest AC units ive ever heard.
Mathers on the map are the best 😊❤
Thank you Kristen 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Your baby boy is so handsome!
Thank you!
What's the power draw like
mas o menos jaja nice
u can get the same ac for 800$ is call outequip 10.000 BTU!!!
never tested it for any length of time...they are a weak unit made for small vans...running that for 8 hours a day like I run mine that battery will not last at all
Nobody wants to talk cost

similar a/c units cost about $400 on aliexpress directly form China FYI if anyone wondering. This looks like just a rebrand for the west.
thats exactly what it is.
