Even on a really sunny day in December my solar is greatly reduced. In December my system produces 0-15kwh a day. During August I produce 10-55kwh a day. So if I am only using my heatpump I will need help from the grid for heat during the winter.

So nice to watch a pro installer guide us looky-loo's. Very good video! Mounting the solar panels: To max energy research the best angle based on your latitude. Build a semi-stud (only studs) structure with a vertical back for attachment to the shed and angled front for mounting all the panels at the correct sun angle. Sitting down low permits easy cleaning and negates possible wind damage. 🤠

Tad is the first HVAC pro to post a video installing a solar mini split that I’ve seen on CZcams - thus introducing this product to his audience with the creditably of a professional. Most of the other videos on solar powered mini splits are DIY installs or solar installers that are not HVAC pros. It just means more coming from a HVAC technician. That’s all I was saying.
Well, I'll add that I see plenty of non Pros install them WRONG. Most units will work screwed up, but in about 2 years, we get a call.

Solar powered mimi split is not hard, even a battery powered split is easy enough. I converted my whole house HVAC to a mini split system that runs on solar and battery. You can power anything electrical with solar the only issue is having enough solar output. Ideally there really should be batteries in the system to stabilize the power output otherwise your split will cycle on and off with the sun or if grid tied it will cycle on and off the grid.

Pet peeve, Why do people always use channel locks on brand new brass fittings?....why can't they just use the proper wrench that fits those fittings? As a certified automotive technician? For 43 yrs. If I paid a professional to install a mini split? (A/C UNIT) and they started to tighten a brass fitting using channel lock players ??? I would fire them on the spot. (Use the right tools for the right job) plain and simple. 🤦🏻🤦🏻🤦🏻 Other than that? Great video & awesome information. Just take it as, constructive criticism.😊

I use a minisplit inverter air conditioner on my solar system. It's a 12k unit works great. These things are automatically soft start. No surge starting. When cooling or heating is called for the unit ramps up very slowly. Instead of cycling the unit just slows down and will finally shutdown when not called for at all. These are the absolute best kind of heat pump to be used off solar.
Pretty nice that they make a unit that is efficient enough to run directly off of your panels, and still cool a fair amount of space! I like the fact that they come pre-charged so you don't have to screw around with soldering lines, and vaccing down the system, and charging, and whatnot. That can literally take longer than installing the system in some cases! 😉
My dad is a startup commissioning engineer so I like watching HVAC videos for fun, lol. Mini splits are something we might look into for our house that has baseboard heaters so this video was quite informative.

Seriously, I get SO fed up with ‘I’m-Too-Macho-Man-Read-Mere-Instruction-Manuals” folks on CZcams , flinging the manual away, then stumbling through the work, trying desperately to figure out which way is up, is water wet, is ice cold, does the RED wire go to the#1 terminal, etc etc.
Then they complain bitterly about “How difficult the install was” or “the product doesn’t work right” or “it burned up in less than an hour”
It’s great to see an actual PROFESSIONAL HVAC installer look at the manual. not all units are identical, manufacturers can have slight differences in details.

In the 70’s when I was 6 I watched my dad build our first TV with a soldering iron. He an I did a lot of HealthKit. So many things back then included the wiring diagram inside the device. Those were the days.
Good video. I'm a retired Mechanical Designer and tackled a lot of DYI home projects because I enjoy doing them. I have been thinking about solar A/C units because of the cost of Electricity in my area of the country and this sold me on the idea. It would have been nice if the costs of the unit and solar panel were included, but I guess you cannot have everything. Thanks infor Taddy!

I would build a free standing lean to next to your shed and mount the solar panels on its roof.

Loving your plywood walls. Having plywood on the walls makes mounting a piece of cake. You don't need studs to hold up the unit. Just be sure you don't hit the stud with your pass through.
You might put composite material to build up to the rib height for you solar panel install. Then install your brackets. You can get it at most box stores. It is made from plastic and wood. They typically use it for decks.

Hey looks great nice video ! . I used tamarack rails on my Bus/Rv with 4x 320w trina panels and they can with stand hurricane winds. They are really nice product. You can have the rails out passed the roof so on your south face roof you should get 4 up there.
You could install the panels as a overhang/lean to beside the building to create some shade to store items out of the sun. One 2x4 or 4x4 on each end with single 2x4 on edge between them and a ledger against the building for the other side. Use pressure treated. Or find some extruded aluminum. Set your proper angle and mount everything.

Ive had 3 of these for over a year. FOUR panels are a bit better install for cloudy conditions on the 12k (Panels produce generally 5-30% power depending on thickness of clouds) . On Cooling this will run with as little as 100W, 200W on Heat.
As you become familiar, play with the AC power limiter in APP / "plug" icon on remote - this limits AC power input to 300W. There is a secret button sequence if you decide you want the AC Limiter always on.

@@xaviy649Set unit to Cooling mode, temp to 90F, fan speed on Low. Press Power Limiter button on remote (AC plug 🔌 icon) 8 times in 10 seconds. You will hear 4 tones Ding-ding-ding-ding. Power Limiter is always-on. Performing sequence again restores normal operation.

I like this and can see where this can be something you could use in a pump or solar house to keep everything protected from the cold. Dose it come or can you hook up a battery back up for night time use.
Seeing their prices it would be cheaper to buy a 3kw inverter for 674, 5 400w panels for 600 and a 120v mini split for under 700, that's $1974.00. Not only will it run the AC but provide power for the whole shed. Add 1 48V, 5.12kw battery for 1149 and now your working into the night.

You can always put the PVC sleeve on the lines first before pushing the lines through the wall, saving you the time to go outside to readjust that PVC sleeve.

Put that remote control at one side of the door so that you dont have to walk all the way to the back to grab it.

You need a torque wrench to follow the manufacturer's spec. You also need to evacuate the lines with a vacuum pump and gauges to remove air and water vapor from the lines prior to releasing the freon. A nitrogen pressure test may be beyond many DIYers. So, hold the vacuum for at least 20 minutes. A few hours even better.
If you watch the video, you will see that. I recommended a torque wrench in the video
Also, if you read the manual for this specific model of equipment, you will know that a vacuum is not required

If the line sets are full of air and not the ones that come precharged in the linset then yes you would need to use a vacuum pump to remove all the air and moisture from them before letting the freon go from the condenser..
that line set is sealed and vacuumed, they have a valve that opens when you connect it.

I have a shed that I power with solar and batteries. In the shed I have a full French door fridge and a upright freezer. It’s not insulated like yours, but I keep it cool during summer with an attic exhaust fan. I kid you not, that exhaust works wonders and everything is powered off of 6 deep cycle 100ah batteries wired in parallel.

That’s a great way to keep the shed the same temperature as outside. Definitely worth while.
For the solar panel mounting on the shed, have you considered S-5! Protea Brackets? You might need an additional L foot depending on orientation of metal ridges. Hope that helps!

I have a good idea about mounting.
Connect electrical wire first, push wire through hole taped to hose pipes while it’s on your shoulder then mount. No brackets needed.
My 3.6Kw, EV charger array as of last weekend, is also now running a pioneer 12k Btu, 23 SEER mini-split in my garage, effectively increasing our square footage by 400 feet. What surprised us was, whe we opened the garage door and left it open all day, it cut the houses electric use by 20Kw, while only using around 10-12Kw from the EV charger array. This may save us $600/year, and make our house almost net zero in electric use, with our grid tie 5.4Kw on roof installation. I didn't expect the garage to be as air tight as it apparently is. It does have an insulated door.

While mounting on the studs is obviously the best practice, when your wall is 1/2 ply, there's no wrong place to hang it. No way in hell that air handler is falling off the wall mounted to the ply.
These lines seem like the Mr Cool units that sealed end to end and don't need to be vacuumed? Do these lines also come with pre-filled freon?

Run some unistrut over the ribs first then mount all the panels you can fit there. Easy peasy.
As always, you did a great job 👏 just two things first is based on my experience maybe it’s just me, so I never had a good experience with mini split in a foaming place and got leak very soon at indoor units due to VOC gas , second i believe that would be better to coil your line set horizontally in order to get back oil to the compressor. I know this won't mean much to alot of viewers, but an easy way to convert Cel to Far. Double the number and add 30. He was showing 16 cel. 16 +16+30 will put you in the ballpark.

I was just trying to give you an easy way to convert so you don't have to carry your laptop around with you all the time, to look up formulas. Actually your laptop was more than like made by countries that use the Metric system. Is BTU's and cubic Feet AMERICAN
You can look up formulas on any phone with access to internet, also c° to f° is probably the easiest one, 32 F equals 0 C and then do each C by 1.8 to convert to F

Love the vid, I however like to be able to flair the connections to be able to cut the lines shorter and make it neat and tidy. I do the same on the drain lines, that hose won’t last long in the sunlight.
If you want to make line shorter and you have a torch and a couple couplings, then you can make it shorter
Build a lean-to to mount the solar panels and keep things slightly protected
For Metal Roof/Walls or whatever... You need something like S-5 RibBracket IV - S5 company has all mounting types for direct attatch or rail based systems. - Used them on many projects and they are solid.

I don't know why nobody ever talks about heat recovery/heat exchangers when dealing with Heat Pumps, I've been using one for close to 35 years and it's amazing,not gives me free hot water and ups my SEER eating as a bonus making the whole operation more efficient.
The best part is you can use any old hot water heater you want... You could even run a DC powered pump or a 110/220v pump and it's only pennies to operate because it draws somewhere in the order of less than 0.5 amps...
I'd like to see these DIY units add two extra quick connectors in the proper place to allow for the hook up of a heat exchangers... I mean you could just Mount it on the return line but it's best between the compressor and the reversing valve...
When they switched over to the new refrigerant everybody doubted it would be much of an advantage, but truth be told, it's even better than it was with the old refrigerant!!! The water is even hotter than ever!!! And if you buy the parts yourself and install it yourself it pays for itself in no time at all which is why many AC techs use to jack their prices up because nobody ever believes you when you say it pays for itself in six months if you consume a lot of hot water.... Mine runs year round down here in Florida... Summer and Winter... With the exception of a few days when it gets really cold and I need to use auxiliary heat.

I. really appreciated the video. I was not aware of mini-splits that are made for solar power. I have a sunroom that I want to use a mini-split to moderate the temperature in it. But I was concerned about getting power to it. This solar powered system would be perfect for that application. I could put the panels right on the sunroom roof. The only thing I might add to the system would be a couple of batteries to extend the run time into the evening. Do you have any plans to do battery storage. I would love to see the solution you use.

i was thinking about going with mini splits to replace my electric hungry central unit but I ended up going with inverter window units. Super super quiet and so easy to install I was up and running in 30 minutes. And a LOT less than the mini splits. My electric bill last summer was about $150 less per month in the summer. Only downside is no heat. But I use propane anyway.

Nice video. Love that it can be powered with three solar panels. Definitely appreciate the snap unboxing, as well as the pro-tip on the solo wall jacks.
As for the solar mounting, a simple frame between waist and shoulder high would seem to ease installation and cleaning. You might also consider mounting the panels to 2x4’s that can pivot on a bolt with a leg on the other end that can adjust the inclination for summer, spring/fall, and winter. Like the back of some chaise lounge chairs. That way it’s an easy adjustment once a quarter to increase the efficiency of the panels.
Just went to the website. $2k to $3k seems pretty affordable for power and an HVAC system.
