It's really fun coming to this video and seeing the comments showing appreciation for John Oliver long before they knew Last Week Tonight would make their dreams come true.
In his last breath the tiger reaches up to the sky before sadly collapsing, fighting the owl who then desecrates his corpse. Just the fact that Dara added that to his little mime show is hysterical: such a small gesture of character and tragedy in a silly mime thing about silly owls that won't make it into the edit anyway. It's all about imagination!
@midwifecat I was in that audience! That taping was legendary. So much fun... he took questions from the audience. My roommate stands up and asks him what kind of skin care he uses (because she worked for a skin care line at the time and has a one-track mind), and he literally did not know how to answer her. After a while he said, "soap?" Absolutely baffled. I face-palmed.
By 'him' do you mean John Oliver? I didn't notice that anyone on the panel had especially beautiful skin so I don't know what would inspire such an inquiry.
nothing against current panelists on mock the week but to see rory bremner, john oliver, dara o'briain, frankie boyle and linda smith makes me sad that they aren't on our screens together anymore.
He moved to america and is one of the writer and regular comedians of the daily show with john stewart, for which he won an emmy with the rest of the writing staff. He also has his own show similar to live at the Apollo with other stand ups. He is only known here for his regular podcast the bugle with the times online
It's a bear pit of a show. You can see the comics leaning forward, desperate to get their next word in, to riff off and top whatever the previous one has said... except when Milton Jones is on. He doesn't say much, but when he does, you can see everyone else relax, in the certain knowledge that (a) it's going to be completely off the wall and, importantly (b) they can forget about topping it or even getting onto the same planet. Jones is a genius. (Oliver rocks too, mind you...)
I don't suppose anyone remembers the series/episode number of this episode? Or the original broadcast date? I love John Oliver, he has such a good sense of humour. Would love to watch the entire episode again...
Ah sod it - they put our actors and comedians to better use than we do. The cream of US TV in the 2000s has grossly outweighed the number of good UK programmes. A sad fact, given how provocative our drama used to be here but true, nonetheless. And even the big budget fast food TV like 24 is far FAR better than something like Spooks.
WIthout a doubt. And it is annoying that they have to make 'The American Version'. Whatever we like of theirs we just fork out the cash and buy the episodes. They have to somehow translate things to their stars and their setting. Life on Mars, Men Behaving Badly, Fawlty Towers (Jesus, that one was atrocious) that Australian sitcom Kath and Kim - why can't they just accept other countries have different styles of comedy to offer?
Not true. Half of these American programmes you speak of are from the LOST saga. That in itself hollows out the quality contingency that America might otherwise have boasted.
John Oliver: How a suit changed my life.
Hugh and Frankie wear one and more Americans know who John Oliver is. Discuss.
And Jon Stewart
Owl: It's over Bob! I have the high ground.
The Doctor how has this not got more likes?
You can’t just meme every time you hear “high ground”.
John in this video looks like what I had imagined what James Potter would look like. Or what Harry looks like grown up.

Lamashtar : John Oliver’s family is from Liverpool, after all.
"John Oliver's Owl Tangent"
A great name for a potential show/novel/autobiography if ever I heard one.
It's really fun coming to this video and seeing the comments showing appreciation for John Oliver long before they knew Last Week Tonight would make their dreams come true.
bahaha, dara's miming gets me every fucking time.

Why is it such a good line up? Linda smith, John Oliver AND Jeremy Hardy. Had to have been an early episode before people hated going on it.
nothing against current panelists on mock the week but to see rory bremner, john oliver, dara o'briain, frankie boyle and linda smith makes me sad that they aren't on our screens together anymore.
i did like Russel howard too
is he not on it at all anymore?
Linda Smith RIP.
And now we’ve lost Jeremy 😢

Who the fuck is John Oliver? He's a beast.
He's so adorable.
Is it me or does everytime someone says something long the lines of "that will never get past the edit", it always does.
Every time you see them say something like that.
Boy I miss Linda Smith, so funny and talented
John Oliver still has a pretty strong brummie accent here and it sounds so weird
Christ, that makes me feel old... The first series was so long ago.
Thanks :)
"Great fighters, the owls"
Owls are also fierce enemies of Simon Cowell.
I think John and Rory should come back for the next series now that Frankies sadly gone. They were hilarious in the early series'.
He speaks from experience. Bringing Hedwig to the zoo was a horrible plan.
Funnest Harry Potter ever.
I seriously need to move to England if only for their tv... fantastic!
I love John Oliver!
Anyone like john oliver on the daily show? :-D
I'm sorry, but does anyone else find that John looks like what people would imagine James Potter to look like?
The bugle
So that's why there are no tigers in area's populated by owls.
john oliver ftw!

Oh, Dara's hand motions just killed me.
Hmmm... I wonder if Obi-Wan learned his high ground moves from owls!

I don't remember the episode off-hand, but it was the first series - John went to the Daily Show pretty shortly thereafter.
monumental
What season/series is this?
yes he is. he's the professor.
@nickharris86 can find the daily show with jon stewart, he is a regular on the programme
I lol'd at 1:10, haha
great show that
RIP Linda Smith
@pinkblue114 They weren't regulars yet in series 1
@Rascasseman Russel Howard was always a regular ... :S
Dara's owl vs tiger fight impression is actually featured in his new biological journal. Nocturnal Night Terrors. Chapter: Big Cats
must of been a long time ago, because Linda smith is on it
@DonalLynchyou Do people hate going on it!? Why?
weres russell and andy ??
I think that may be an issue of sampling.
@DonalLynchyou Really, wow. It looks so even pace and almost genteel, the power of editing I suppose. Thanks for the answer.
@DottyDotDitto Many comedians say that it's really aggressive to get a word in and gets mercilessly edited down to a half hour show.
@oer6000 good point.
@musicalwhimsy Holy crap, YES!
Well we only see them say that if it does ^^
Ahh these old days with Bremner as the regular!
Shows how much the show has changed to be honest.
while its great john been on the daily show i do miss his apperances on mock the week i think he only did 2 or 3 but they were all brilliant
@lsmarters Cheers.
@ultrapersonthing When it doesn't make it past the edit, you'd never know would you?
@SonOfRojBlake I'd add Stewart Francis to that
bofa deez nuts
Not enoguh John Oliver stuff online!
Hello, I'm from the future. Your grievance has been addressed and rectified.

...what?

They should have. To Hell with Adrian Rawlins.
The unfunniest panel this one
Poor john got kicked out of Britain coz hes too funny!
Frankie's routines left him depressed because he knew he could never attain that Olympian standard
