I worked on this project from 2009-2013. It’s amazing to see what is looked like when I got there to when I finished. To watch the excavation happen was truly amazing. Then I came back to the project around 2017 or 2018 snd to see it become an almost fully finished subway station and no longer just an amazing view it looks like below the earth was totally amazing. Happy I worked here
Meanwhile the two Hudson tunnels which carry all Amtrak trains as well as all New Jersey Transit Trains into Jersey and the south continue to deteriorate while politicians haggle over the price completely oblivious to the financial debacle that would result from the failure of either tunnel.

Blame Trump and republicans for cutting taxes and increase spending on the military. Maybe in 2021 something can be done.

That whole northeast part of the country is a cesspool, the deterioration is out stripping the ability to maintain it, it would be cheaper to blow it all up and start anew on top of it.

Coming from Europe where you can go almost anywhere you want by train I don't understand why you don't have thaz already, at least in a highly populated state like California.

Instead of designing a system to alleviate local traffic jams around LA, California continues to try to build a high-speed thing from LA to San Fran which makes no sense.
And it’s AWESOME that East Side Access is Now Open as of January 2023! Grand Central Madison is so convenient and it makes LIRR travel so much easier and more East Side Efficient!

Because NY State got the money already for East Side Access, but lost the money for Gateway once Trump became President.
@Blair Aquilia Yes, Trump is the latest. Christie killed ARC, which wasn't that great an idea. After NY and NJ was pledged the money for Gateway under Obama, Trump's stooges withdrew the funding because both states didn't support him.

@@mikemcorky5418 Crossrail used EIGHT, for 42km (26 miles) of tunnels. Considering they're about $15m each, and even bigger than the ones used here, they're really not an astronomical cost.

The lexington Have connector is a great idea from Grand Central East to the Penn Station tubes which would be another way out of Penn Station.
These are the infrastructure projects that will endure. They're costly, until you realize they last. With a few exceptions, the tunnels dug by workers a century ago are still in use. They've had to retrofit the rails, cars, platforms, and other systems, but they only paid to move that dirt and rock once. It's an extraordinary value.

@@godofthisshit Well, that's because they eternalized the cost of worker health and injury. Today's workers are paid well and not worked in extraordinarily dangerous conditions or worked to death. Still, the value of tunnels endure, even when the concrete, steel, and electronics that comprise the subway system are long obsolete.
The MTA should adopt a similar network model to the S-bahn network in Germany. The commuter trains run through the city center in a straight segment and expand further out in the suburban areas. Merging the LIRR, Metro North and NJ Transit branches into one single line would fit the description of the S-bahn model. Not only does this model allow suburban commuters to ride directly to the city hubs without changing, it also allows suburbs separated by the city to connect to each other by a single network that originates from one suburb and terminates at another.
Penn station is like Liverpool Street and fenchurch street and grand central is Euston and kings cross st Pancras

Well, Penn Station was quite an elegant place before they tore it down to put up Madison Sq Garden, they paved paradise, put up a parking lot.
It might have been elegant when it opened in 1910 but by the 1960's it suffered greatly from poor maintenance due to the PRR's poor financial condition. I'm not happy it got torn down but it wasn't economically sustainable as Grand Central was/is (and there were proposals to tear that down too).

Running LIRR trains into Grand Central will connect the lower NY counties to the counties of Long Island! Great Job MTA! And just a FYI Folks, MTA has nothing too do with NJT, those Hudson tunnels are for NJT and Amtrak only!
They could add infill stations at park ave and 1st ave for transfers to the 6
qjtvaddict The problem with that is tunnel elevation and possible lack of room in all 4 tunnels, which could make adding a station there difficult.
They had to wait for Robert Moses to croak, before beginning this project.

@Craig F. Thompson ?? Every track, upper and lower level at GCT is maxed out during morning and evening rush hours with MN trains. Plus there was NO connection to the LIRR in Queens which is what this whole giant project is about, so......not sure what you mean.

All our existing tunnel and train work was done by guys with shovels, but this one tunnel has been in the works for 70 years, and is projected to be complete by 2022.
All I know is that I am glad I live in a small town in Michigan. Between all the high buildings and the underground subways, plus so many people, I don't know how anyone can live there.

It’s getting very crowded here in Atlanta with the people getting out of places like California and New York. Sadly, the $h@t is about to hit the fan in Georgia and I want to get out of here before it does!

I've visited the city several times, I'm fascinated by the architecture, and the history, but most of all by its ability to move people. With that being said, it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. Too many people in a small area for me as well. I almost got stuck there the weekend before Hurricane Sandy struck. Some friends and I flew up to visit some people we knew. By Sunday around 11am we knew we needed to get out! We got the last car Avis had to rent so we could drive back to Atlanta. I'm not so crazy about living near any major metropolitan area. The jobs are better around them, but the infrastructure around most of them is so poor if any major disaster took place it would cripple the area. I'm not interested in becoming a prepper, but I would like to get to an area with a lower population.
The funny thing is all the people that live in large cities say the same thing about the people that live in small towns. Honestly more and more people are migrating to urban areas. There's so much more to offer such as jobs, schooling, and entertainment. I love living in the city although my city only has about 2 million people.
It’s beautiful in its own unique way. Also just the convince of having all your amenities near you.

I grew up in Nassau County. The house price aren't too bad, all things considering, but the RE taxes are insane. I'd love to know what they really spend all that money on, $20k a year for an average house is not uncommon at all.
James I never understand real estate taxes in the US being so high, and also so varied from state to state. In the UK we have the similar council tax, basically a property tax payable to the local authority. It is based loosely on the value of your home. There are several bands ranging from A to H. The price is set for a typical home, deemed to be band D. Band A homes are small low value homes and they pay about half. Band H are large, expensive homes and pay about double, with a range of prices in between. A typical home owner for a band D home pays about £1600 a year. The most expensive homes pay perhaps £3500. That's the extent of our property taxes. There would be riots if it was suggested we pay £10,000 plus per year- it's just insane!

Honestly, TBMs are fast. You could easily get 8 miles of tunnels done by 1 TBM in about 2 weeks (New York is built on some of the best rock for tunneling). It's just bureaucracy and lazy workers. Look at the speed China build their metro stations, it's insane.

It will make the lives of a lot of LIRR passengers easier by eliminating the need to backtrack to the East Side on the 1/2/3/shuttle/E train after arriving at NYP. Also they won't have to pay a second fare to the MTA.
I worked that with the SandHogs it was phenomenal I was blessed to do that project 🙏🏽💯

Maybe I can. I was fortunate to take an underground tour about 4 yrs ago. It is awesome - the caverns would eventually become two levels of trains. One of those ya gotta see it to believe it things.
And, I'm scheduled for another tour in mid-March. Can't wait to see the progress.

There will never be a direct connection between Penn Station and GCT within Manhattan itself. They dont want to connect it to the Metro North, they just want to give the LIRR access to the east side of Manhattan.
there is an existing line on the west side of manhattan that connects penn sta to the metro north tracks, it is used by amtrak trains to upstate ny.
Yes, its called The Empire Connection. I know all about it but I said there will never be a connection between the 2 terminals within Manhattan itself. In order to move a train between Penn Sta. and GCT it would have to go north along the west side (via the Empire connection) across the Spuyten Duyvil bridge and down the Metro North Hudson Line into GCT. That would take it up into the Bronx and back down into Manhattan.
Thompson That still wouldn't facilitate a direct connection between the two terminals.

Paris Gare du Nord receives 750 000 daily passengers and seems busier than GCT. On week days, 225 000 passengers exit or take a Metro North train at GCT for a weekly total of 1.291 million in 2018, and 160 000 do the same in GCT subway station. Even double counting Metro North passengers using the subway, we are far from the 750 000 daily figure advanced in the video.

Well, when you finish this boondoggle project, why not do something useful and build a connection from La Guardia to the 7 line? Or even heaven forbid a direct rail connection from La Guardia to JFK (I know, don't have a stroke, it's just a wish, a hope, and a dream). Either one would be more useful than this plan to super-saturate GCT and its subway lines during rush hour.
I know some brother Operating Engineer's working on that project.

The TBM used in the queens project was very similar to the ones used for the chunnel connecting England and France, I wonder if this company or design was used in this project
A lot of them are very similar. They sometimes even dismantle the machines (in large exit pits) and then refurbish them, so that they can be used elsewhere in the world.
The TBM is going to be need to be designed for the type of geology. The ones used in London are the second type mentioned in the video (the ones that line the walls to prevent the tunnel collapsing).
Yes. Both machines where made by the american company Robbins.
Btw. the world leader for TBM's is the german company Herrenknecht.
The Rock Machines were a Seli and a Robbins machine. The Seli machine was mined beyond the alignment and abandoned. The Robbins machine has been sold, rebuilt and already completed another tunnel int he US. The two Queens TBMs were Herrenkenecht Slurry Shields. The Seli worked well after some early growing pains. The Robbins and Herrenknecht machines exceeded expectations.
Actually finished in January 25, 2023.

It's funny how something like that continues to be passed on from one generation to the next, and takes many decades to be flushed out of the societal psyche because of the activities of the past. The incidents of corruption, which so many people have heard about, involved the payments that were collected whereby, if some contractor refused to pay during construction, there would be a labor walk out the next day for fear of an 'accident' ! There have been so many references to Francis Ford Coppola's Epic Movie - The Godfather, and the comments from those in the 'Family' who have somehow been able to get out the Mob and live to tell the tale, that the movie is 100% the way it really used to be. I have always been in favor of full disclosure for anyting that has occurred especially something that has been covered up such as JFK, and 911, and I really hope that the recently convened Federal Grand Jury in Lower Manhattan is actually able to start the long process of uncovering the truth, regardless of whose ox is being gored.

No. The tunnel in Die Hard With a Vengeance is the New York City Water Tunnel No. 3. It will be the third connection to NYC reservoirs upstate.

I don't understand why the city is paying millions to get the LIRR into Grand Central when it already goes to Penn 8 blocks away. That's like a 20 minute walk at most. What is the point??? You are just increasing traffic to Grand Central, spending millions and inconvenicing thousands.
I think the idea is to create room at Penn Station for Metro-North trains, allowing Westchester and Connecticut people to reach the west side.
Penn station serves the West side of Manhattan. Some people who use the LIRR work on the East side. The new link can save them time and money when they commute.
It's not about saving walking time, it's about allowing for additional service. Currently, LIRR is operating at its peak - it cannot handle any more trains to be coming into and out of Penn Station during peak hours. By having half of the trains go to GCT, it will nearly double the amount of service. People are complaining that there are never any seats. That's because the LIRR cannot add any more trains to its current timetables due to track shortage. The only way it can be fixed is with ESA.
It would save me about 40 minutes per day and eliminate my need for a monthly Metro Card. And ease subway overcrowding.

Did this project use the 2nd/3rd largest diameter TBMs, behind Bertha?
+CooLDsteR No, the TBM was only 20ft in diameter, a rather small tunnel. The TBM used to bore Malasia's SMART tunnel (a highway and storm drain tunnel) was about 40ft, and Bertha is about 60ft. Subway tunnels don't need to be as large as highway tunnels, and while this TBM is 1/3 the diameter of Bertha, the area of the tunnel (and thus, the amount of muck that needs to excavated) is only 1/9 as much.
Now that my place of work is closer to PENN - I'm more interested about getting Metro North to PENN. I mean - its only fair.
