Saying "on the spectrum" is "wrong" is fascinating to me. I'm autistic and feel the phrase helps remind people that everyone has a very different experience.

Yup.I like the pie charts best but like... it's currently called Autism SPECTRUM Disorder. As a very literal autistic.... that means I am ON THE spectrum. Literally speaking lol.
I think the issue most folk have with it is related to how many people still say/believe that "everyone is on the spectrum" which is wrong and diminishes our genuine issues and struggles
I personally don't use it because I feel its also mostly used by allistic (non-autistic folk) to suggest someone is autistic without saying the word, because they feel its dirty and bad/an insult
Which is a systemic and societal issue at the root obviously

I personally don't like "on the spectrum" because it feels like an euphemism (like when you say someone "kicked the bucket" instead of saying they died), but if another autistic person prefers to use this term, then that's fine and I'll respect it

I used to call people both the F slur and the R slur when I was a dumb kid hanging out with the wrong crowd. Guess what? Turns out I'm an autistic trans lesbian so... yeah, I've gotten better since then.

I think being a wealthy autistic celebrity is a very different experience to being a regular autistic person, because autism primarily affects us socially.
Wealth increases a persons class, which totally changes the social dynamics and oppression an autistic person would usually face.

I don’t like phrases like “everyone’s a little autistic”, I have a friend who says that to me, I find it dismissive. I have struggled all my life with bullying, put downs etc. Bloody hell, it’s hard enough as it is without being dismissed as though the struggles are nothing

It’s pointless anyway, they won’t get it, lol. I’ve tried that response as well, still get that blank unknowing look. i had a therapist say this to me. i'd seen her for two years prior to my diagnosis. i guess i didn't hide my expression well because apparently i made a visibly disgusted face at that comment and she ghosted me right after....
young people have been using autistic or (acoustic) as an insult lately. it is pretty frustrating because they’ll say it to neurotypical people just because they’ve done something the person perceives as silly or stupid so it’s like they’re trying to equate autism with being unintelligent. i don’t think most of them realize how harmful it is but that’s what they’re doing, just adding to this total misconception of what autism is.
I'm Gen-Z and just a few years ago my friends were making fun of and educating people on not saying the R-slur and now a suprising amount of them are going back and using it. It's scary honestly as one of the only autistic people in the group..

@@AmoebaMak i truly do not get it. a few years ago, everyone was seemingly getting more educated about things. the r-word became a slur (it had been for a while but for a long time it was seen as the proper term when i was growing up) and people were very careful about their language and how they spoke. everyone seemed to be more inclusive. especially young people. especially people online. i would see it on tumblr and vine and it made me feel so hopeful for the youth. what happened? how did things go from that to this? it's one of the most baffling things to me.
I've had to get on my students about things like this... It's so frustrating that someone being different is looked down upon.

Some of these examples speak to how a handful of autistic people think their autistic experience is the only one. It’s not. Be yourself and embrace doing what’s best for you, but understand it’s going to be different for others and that’s ok :)

@AmberAmber While it’s your right as an Autistic person to identify in whatever way you wish, you may want to reconsider referring to yourself or other Autistic people as “ASD individuals.” I’ve only ever seen that label used by ableist researchers bending over backward not to use the label “autistic.”
Think it about it for a moment. ASD stands for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Do you think it’s appropriate to address someone as an “Autism Spectrum Disorder individual?” It smacks of ableism and discomfort with the autistic label and pathologizes the autistic neurotype even more than person-first language does.

I'm autistic and I can butter bread with no issues, I love tomatoes, hate avocados, I'm a straight man, I don't like noodles with just butter (no matter the type of noodles), I hate strawberries, in general I don't care if my foods touch, I don't speak to people cruelly and disguise it by saying "I'm just being blunt" (there is a huge difference between being blunt and being cruel), I don't like weighted blankets or sleep masks, and here's the biggest one I absolutely love physical contact (as long as it is firm enough). I would be hugged multiple times a day if I had it my way, but I won't force others into it.
Talking about being embarrassed by other people being visibly Autistic because of internalised shame is the opposite of how I feel. I'm so happy when I see someone being openly themselves. I hope I can be too one day.

We are in the middle ages in France as far as autism's concerned. I was yelled at "idiot" when I was being autistic. So the first time I saw somebody on the spectrum without cognitive deficit stimmed and flapped, I felt like awkward. But the more I watch, the more I accept and love my autistic self. I have opened my autistic you tube channel in french to help french speaking autistic people with validation and acceptance. Thank you for everything you do❤@@imautisticnowwhat
The best thing that my autism brought me was a deep love and acceptance for my autistic son. When he would go out in public, he would get upset because he started stimming but I taught him to love and accept that part of him and now when I see him stim in public, completely authentic, it makes me so happy to be his mother.

The problem with sia is that the movie is extremely offensive. Not even just the restraining part but how she portrays autistic people and how, in Music head she wishes she was 'normal'. Next to that sia kept defending her movie and saying it was an accurate depiction even when autistics told her it wasnt. And double downing on that she had done her research. And then on top of it becoming verbally abusive towards autistic people and blocking them when they had something to say about sia attitude and the movie. (She also even blocked cloe hayden). And when she found out she was autistic herself she hardly made amends. She basically said: yeah, things happen. A lot is going on." She still wouldn't take any responsibility. And if she refers to herself publicly as a kook for being autistic and having mental health issues is also still harmful. Just because she has it herself doesnt mean she gets to talk down on nd or mental health concerns.

Whenever I tell people, I always tell them, "I'm on the autism spectrum." There is nothing wrong with explaining it that way at all. The signs of autism may not be as extreme as it is for other people- a spectrum
There’s nothing wrong with explaining it that way as long as you’re not doing so because you feel you don’t deserve the Autistic label or because you see the Autistic label as a slur to be avoided. Also, there are far too many allistic (and Autistic) people who use the phrase “on the spectrum,” yet think the autistic spectrum is a linear functioning or severity scale (which is not how a spectrum is structured at all).
I say I'm Autistic and watch them panic as they try desperately to understand 'which kind of Autistic' I am.

I was diagnosed in the summer of 2018. I didn't tell ANYONE until earlier this year. I finally got sick of hearing people say "What are you--AUTISTIC?!" and meaning it as an insult. I also got super sick of seeing people saying things like "You're not autistic, you don't XYZ" or "Autism is a fad," so I clapped back on someone publicly, and in the process, outed myself.
Celebrities spreading their anti-autistic, "I deliberately refuse to understand you" bullshit is one of the main reasons, in my opinion, why I *still* catch crap from all directions about my autistic traits. Deflecting it is fucking exhausting, and these ding-dongs KNOW what they're doing. A pox on all their houses.

On a lighter note, my favorite book was written and illustrated by a trans person. Highly recommend Nimona by ND Stevenson. Both the book and the movie are amazing!

This is why being diagnosed can often be just as traumatic as going through life undiagnosed. The world still sees autism as an insulting terrible thing that they need to "cure" out of children by training them to not show their autistic traits. The people I grew up around reinforced this idea that being autistic makes you "slow" and "too sensitive". So as someone who was diagnosed, I believed that being autistic made me those things.
which is also so bananas because now that I know more about autism i can accurately guess who's masking or undiagnosed because they're presenting exceptional greatness

(not to erase people who dont fall into this category, or who present exceptional but have lacks elsewhere, but just saying- high attention to detail, unique creative work, using senses in a powerful way, self confidence to do their own thing, ability to perfectly follow steps, etc)

The instance with CardiB is that her fans and others are ASSUMING that her daughter is autistic. While that might be true and that Cardi does have the resources to get her daughter diagnosed earlier then most women, especially BIPOC women, it’s annoying af for people to assume something about them, but especially their child, and it doesn’t help anyone!

I used to like Girl Meets World when it was airing on Disney Channel. I somehow missed the "Farkle might be Autistic" episode. When I went back to rewatch the series on Disney+ a few years ago and saw this episode it made me feel so ill and uncomfortable. All the fear mongering, with no clarification on what Autism actually is and then, oh turns out Farkle isn't Autistic after all (even though the character is VERY Autism coded) but actually the group's other friend IS Autistic and there is no apology for how they acted around the idea of Autism, no lesson learned about how Autism isn't some scary disease, no acknowledgement that Farkle's friends tried to f**king ABA him, just. Oh. Farkle's just weird and Smackle IS Autistic and we never knew. The End.
The rage that this episode brought me, I don't think I even fully understand. How, how did they think that this was okay? What was the take-away from the episode supposed to be? Teaching a bunch of 12-16 year olds that Autism is a disease and that if it turns out they or a friend are Autistic that it's the worst possible thing to ever learn? To train someone like a dog to not act like themselves so they can skew their evaluation results and be on paper, "not Autistic"? To pity the friend that they find out already has a diagnosis? What was the goal lesson of this damned "very special episode"?
I don't think it's fair to put it on Sabrina Carpenter or Rowen Blanchard though, they were kids under contract to play a role. I doubt they had much say in scripting and direction, and considering how even adults still know so little about Autism, I doubt they had much of an understanding of it themselves and went with the information that was presented to them for the episode.

Although not trans myself, it shocks me how commonly TERFs portray Autistic people as unable to accurately perceive our own gender identities and trans identity as just “confusion” caused by being autistic. The fact that laws are actually being passed that demand ASD screening prior to allowing a trans person to access gender-affirming care makes me sick.
Also autistic (PDA), and trans. It's really hilarious, isn't it? They have clearly never met any trans people. Trans girls can only be like 4 or 5 things, and music producer is one of them. Seriously, I also make music and nearly all my trans femme friends IRL do, to the point where it's a meme to us now and whenever we meet a new one we just laugh because of course they are 😂

@JonBrase lmao 😂😂 your part about how his fans drive just killed me. My ex listened to him and he had thousands of dollars of tickets and was so intitled when on the road. Never before did I realize how a person drives tells a good part of their character.
My mother took me to a psychiatrist when I was maybe seven or eight years old. She told the doctor, in front of me, that there was something "wrong
with me. For several months, I had this amazingly safe place to play and be myself. (My mother was abusive) After a few months, he told my mom that there was nothing wrong with me and stopped our sessions. This was in the 70's, so the science wasn't that advanced on Autism. Even so, I felt betrayed by him, because not only was my safe space taken away, but I knew that I was different and that I had problems and and I felt abandoned by him. It took me many years to trust a psychiatrist again. I doubt I'm the only person who felt unheard by a doctor.
My usual response to "everyone is a little autistic":
Yes, everyone probably has a few autistic traits, to some extent. So you can understand a little bit of it. But being autistic means you have so many of them and they control your life to such extent, that it gets in the way of every day life. I need you to understand how that's different. So I appreciate you understanding how sensory issues make me tired, but that doesn't mean you fully understand how my life is, because it's a lot more than that. Can we agree there?

I'm so sorry, this ended up being quite ranty lol, but I wanted to talk about my experience with ableism irl
I ended up quitting my job at a fast food joint. There were many reasons (I don't think constant overload of sounds, smells, having to switch tasks constantly, socialising with co-workers, masking, etc.), but one was because of my co-workers. I was pretty open about my suspected autism and anxiety with my managers, and they were all really nice about it and let me be accommodated, but I didn't feel safe/okay with telling any of my co-workers about it because they were throwing the word 'autistic' and the R-slur around at each other. I wanted to tell them to stop, but I knew I'd have to explain why it was making me uncomfortable if I wanted them to be receptive. I was not comfortable with disclosing the autism, especially since I wasn't (and still am not) formally diagnosed. Seeing all the stuff on 'fake disorder cringe' and lack of acceptance of self-diagnosis was freaking me out, and I was so worried that they'd see me the way self-diagnosed people are seen. Especially since they were joking about how they weren't allowed to say that, and "oH I'm gOnNa rePorT yOu" mockingly. Yeah I'm mostly glad I quit, but I'm now facing the emotional turmoil of trying to find a new job, trying not to freak out over the idea of not being able to get a job that works for me.
Tl;dr contrary to popular belief, ableism is a very real thing that exists both on and off the Internet, and it's horrible

(sorry for what you've been going through, and I guess it might be a little too late for that, but at the same time for anyone who is still in that situation: you don't need to disclose your autism, diagnoses or not, to tell people it makes you uncomfortable to hear it used as an insult, you don't have to tell them either and you can simply report them, if it's really not allowed as they say)

Ableism is everywhere and unfortunately it’s such a common experience for autistic people, I’m sorry you had to go through that. I hope you find a job with a more positive and supportive environment. Also, regarding your self-diagnosis - every autistic person starts off as being undiagnosed, and diagnosis can take years. I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 20, and I before that I dealt with many people not believing me when I said I thought I might be autistic. It caused me to doubt myself, and I still question it to this day despite being diagnosed. You are part of the community, and you know yourself better than anyone. You’re autistic and that’s absolutely valid ❤
I feel the same way about where I go to school. The teachers and staff are very supportive, but my peers ... aren't. They do almost all of the same shit you described here, and it's made me hide my autism from anyone who isn't a friend for the same reasons. However, even though I've never directly stated it to most people, I think a lot of people have caught on, and they harass me because of it.

Being wealthy like Sia makes accessing all kinds of support available and easy regardless of having a diagnosis or even knowing she was autistic. You don't need to know you are autistic to be able to employ people to do things you find hard or are beneficial for you, able to afford all kinds of sensory support as well as being wealthy and famous enough to be able to insist on controlling your environment pretty much anywhere you go, having anything you want tailored to you, as well as the basic low stress of being able to have secure housing, bills, food etc. As well as being able to access the best specialists the very moment you feel you may want a diagnosis and once you have one being able to afford to pay for any additional supports that you may not have already had.
The Wachowski sisters are amazing trans artists. They made The Matrix, V for Vendetta, and Cloud Atlas, which are loved by autistics and allistics alike.
You know watching The Matrix trilogy was one of my favorite things to do then the wachowskis came out as trans and it made the entire series hit in a different way but it's still my favorite series.
Sophia Stewart wrote the Matrix story that the Wachowskis only adapted to screenplay. Sophia Stewart never gets credit for the story. The Wachowskis speak on it as if they created the story, but they did not.

She even just headlined Jon Stewart’s semi-annual “Night of Too Many Stars” fundraiser, which, in part, funds ABA. (That’s the same fundraiser Paige Layle spoke out against 2 years ago.)

I actually really like using the phrase “on the spectrum” in addition to “autistic.” To me, it’s like a celebration of how beautiful and unique each one of us are individually, and not a single one of our existences are exactly the same on this gigantic rainbow. In addition, it’s like a happy reminder that we’ve mostly moved away from the puzzle piece symbol. :3
I use “on the spectrum” at times when my awareness of those that struggle more than me makes me feel impostery, and like I am devaluing others by saying I am autistic. It’s pretty important to me, being of an age where I couldn’t have been diagnosed as a child, and spent 20 years thinking I probably was an Aspie. Lord knows there are still enough people who think that autistic is synonymous with serious cognitive delays.
(I do have a dx, and lord knows I do struggle a lot, but so many of my most troublesome traits overlap with other less “controversial” disorders.)
Abelism is very real. Especially in the US, I'd say we are abelist at the core, which is just sad and disappointing.
I distinctly remember enduring several years of severe bullying because I was being placed in specialized classes due to my learning disability/autism. Because of this, I never really had any friends.
We need to do better with how we interact with autistic folks, and disabled folks in general.

I think it’s forcing flashbacks to the negative reactions I got from my own family and friends about certain behavior, so we identify the autistic behavior wrong when it’s actually harmless.

I really liked Girl Meets World (and still love Sabrina Carpenter) but idk why anyone would criticize her as if she wrote Maya to be in such denial about her friend possibly being autistic. The writers definitely could have handled it better instead of making Farkle’s friends “pleased” when he didn’t get the diagnosis he expected. Maybe they could have started to accept the fact that he could have Asperger’s and that nothing has changed except that he has a name for what makes him the way he is instead of treating it as if he’s terminally ill or suddenly not the same person. I think they had good intentions and the overall message of that episode was pretty good but the road to hell is paved with good intentions as they say (idk if anyone other than my bf says that actually lol)

From what I remember, they excepted her for her. They didn’t change the way they acted with her. And they didn’t get an Asperger’s diagnosis because he wasn’t having Asperger’s, he was plain out on the spectrum. But I don’t know if I’m all they way right or not. And I think the only reason why they acted like that in the first scene was because they didn’t understand autism yet. I think I remember them studying about it so they would understand, but like I said that’s what I think, I might be wrong, I don’t know. I’m very sorry if I am wrong. @@marystacey824 I honestly didn’t remember the episode too much myself so I was reading the wiki and it did say they were researching but even after it said they were pleased to find out Farkle didn’t get diagnosed and it didn’t mention anything about him being on the spectrum, he’s just a genius or something but Smackle was disappointed that he didn’t get diagnosed because I think she wanted to relate to him better and have that in common. It didn’t say that outright, that’s just what I inferred. I guess it’s just interesting that people find it difficult to accept an autism diagnosis when it comes to someone they’ve known for years versus someone who’s already been diagnosed and that they just met.

It WAS always an insult primarily :/ So those people are repulsed by attempting to use it in a positive way, which is fair as much as it hurts younger autistics. It sucks. Someone said in comments that it's a good phrase because it reminds us that we're all going through different kinds of struggles, and it makes sense. But for some reason I'm uncomfortable to hear it. I don't know if I'm just ADHD or audhd, so I usually use "neurodivergent". And when someone rephrases it specifically as "on the spectrum" it feels almost like attack 😅 because of the way they use it. Like, you know, when guys trying to use scientific sounding words to describe "typical behaviour of female homo sapiens" or something like that. All these words are fine without context and there is some actual typical behaviour probably, but you know for sure that you're going to hear some mean bullshit after that. I don't want to feel bad about "on the spectrum" because it's actually good outside of this context too... I don't know if I should pay attention to some assholes trying to turn normal words into this. It's kinda like if everyone just gave up on a word "autistic" because someone used it incorrectly
With the Cardi B thing I don't think she was saying having an autistic child was an insult what she found insulting or too much was strangers giving a diagnosis in general no matter what it is. It's not random people's place to do that and isn't fair. It would be different if it was people in her day to day life or she was asking about disabilities or sharing something about the kid to the public other than their picture but she wasn't. She was sharing general life. So yeah I don't think she was being defensive because she believes autism is bad but being defensive because she didn't appreciate diagnosis of any sort irrelevant to what she was sharing. I'm pretty sure PDA autistics evolved as the equivalent to white blood cells in the immune system, to protect us all from hostile invaders, because nothing makes me rage harder than people being abusive/manipulative to the innocent, especially children/animals/elderly. As an example, I spent 4th and 5th grade in special "bad kid" school because I kicked another kid in the face and broke his nose because I caught him pulling the wings off a living bee, and I was legitimately shook when I told the adults and they acted like I was the crazy/disturbed/violent one. But every single autistic person I have ever met has understood without me even having to explain myself frantically like i normally feel like i have to to soothe the actually cruel/ignorant/dangerous neurotypicals just so they don't throw me in a cell and beat me because they found me slightly annoying or violating some suspiciously convenient and arbitrary "rule" they pulled out thier ass that somehow justifies them stripping me of my autonomy and fundamental right to exist. Yeah, I get what you mean about being singled out when I first realised I was autistic. I told all my friends to which most of them replied “oh so that’s what’s wrong with you then?” not realising how insulting or offensive that felt at the time, but it was also quite supportive as they’ve all stuck around me, and I appreciate them to death.

When I was undiagnosed, a girl in my class called me autistic as an insult. I had a panic attack/autistic meltdown straight after in front of my whole class. Everyone laughed at me and called me the r word. The teacher didn't do anything about it and just watched me. I am so glad I never have to see those people again.

Lauren Bousfield is one of my favorite trans artists, she's one of the best electronic musicians of all time. Just because trans people get swept under the rug and dismissed doesn't mean we don't make good art, most of the best musical artists I've ever heard are trans. We are much more numerous than people would think. Just because that guy is lazy and hasn't exposed himself to trans art doesn't mean we're not here and thriving all the time. Trans artists are producing groundbreaking and heavily influential art all the time, yet people try to strip us of the right to be considered good at anything, or to be given props for our works. It is for that exact reason that trans people often go above and beyond in skill, and dedication to their craft, as an effort to rehumanize themselves again.
I feel the problem here is that you’re defying works by trans artists as trans art. Unless the subject matter is about trans issues it’s just art. Whether the artist is trans or not simply doesn’t come into it. The point is trans, gay, queer people should be able to exist in society just being accepted as individuals without fanfare regarding their gender or sexuality, that’s what normalising is. I think the reason why so many are resistant is because as with most things, it’s the extremists who’s voices seem to get heard and so people judge based on those views. And unfortunately most people are wilfully ignorant so will never actually bother to explore the opposing argument. Humans humaning I guess. We never got past ‘it’s different set it on fire!’

As an autistic, it angers me to the core when I hear celebrities sprout nonsense while having no idea what it's like to ACTUALLY live with it. It does nothing but stigmatises individuals who have it and it makes it more UNNESSESARILY difficult to mix in with society in general.

It has been kind of a bummer that there don't seem to be any treatment for my executive problems. So mostly I have just been reading up on masking and trying to untangle which learned behaviors are simple good practice, or which are super inauthentic and just shuts me out from my surroundings.

One of the reasons I am not such a big fan of the phrase "on the spectrum" is how I think it misleads people as to what the spectrum is. It sounds like a spectrum upon which you are placed; like a sliding scale. But the spectrum actually refers to a spectrum/constellation of traits which act like colours for a painting. They are components and don't dictate everything about a painting. There's nuance which gets lost when we talk of the spectrum as if it is a spectrum of people with "mild" to "severe" "symptoms".

Idk, being on a spectrum sounds like quite a logical description to me. It is a very different experience for everyone. There are autistic people who need a caretaker for their entire lives - meanwhile I live alone, have a job and people who don't know what autism is would at best describe me as eccentric.

"Getting the diagnosis doesn't change a person." Respectfully, I disagree. Getting diagnosed as being Autistic and ADHD (subtype inattentive) rocked my world. I had a phrase I liked to use to reassure myself, "I'll always be okay." That meant to me that no matter what, I can take care of myself, get some sleep, reset back to default. But the idea was that my "default" was acceptable to myself and to others. The diagnosis confirmed that there was something there that was not external that I was having difficulty dealing with, and that others might judge me for or might dismiss me because of that. The act of digging into that, going through therapy, trying to understand myself better... it's made me some friends, put my marriage in difficult terrain, and challenged my self-esteem quite a bit. There's some baggage from my childhood too - my mom used to be a vaccine conspiracy theorist and that has hit me hard, the realization that she may still think I'm "damaged," even if she's no longer against vaccines. The idea that we don't change just because we got a label is tempting, but it can have a profound impact on oneself.
If any of you who choose to read this want to go get a diagnosis, by all means, go do so. Just be aware that you may have a life-altering set of experiences. Make sure you have a good support network and know your rights when it comes to work and sharing your medical status, your needs, etc. Good luck to everyone.
17:41 I’m someone who very rarely feels anger but when this drama came out I was so upset and angry because the person who made this tweet (that Sia called a bad actor) is Helen Z, the first ever community manager for Minecraft. The Minecraft community absolutely ADORES her!! She is as close to an angel as a human possibly can be. I first learned about her when there was a bug that made Minecraft Realms go down for a few hours. Minecraft Twitter made a tweet about their awareness of the problem and how they were working on it, but there were still a lot of comments from people super angry about it.
I am not exaggerating when I say that Helen replied to EVERY SINGLE comment. Not just with the same copy pasted message, but with personalized, loving and sympathetic messages. For example, saying she’s so sorry that one guys session with his friends was cut off and assuring him that the tech teen was working hard to fix it and that she really hopes it’ll be back up and running again before him and his friends are no longer able to play for the night.
And she was replying this thoughtfully and kindly to EVERYONE, even those who were being super mean about the Realms issue.
I can only imagine the amount of hours she spent sending all of these individual replies, despite her absolutely not having to do so. She just genuinely cared about everyone so much that she decided to use her time to do that.
She even follows me back on Twitter even tho I basically never post and only have 10 followers (I can only guess it’s cause I’m also autistic and love Minecraft)
So yeah, seeing Sia be mean to her of all people made me genuinely livid. When I first watched a video about the Sia drama the very last thing I expected was seeing Helen in the midst and Sia being so cruel to her. How can a huge celebrity be so blatantly cruel to such a pure and loving person like that??? If it had been anyone else I probably wouldn’t care as much but how DARE she talk that way to Helen!
I feel like, with Sia’s situation, it can kind of depend how like… forcefully we have had masking and the like enforced upon us. I’m not fully familiar with Sia’s story, but I know for me; the way I grew up, both peers and family, enforced that I couldn’t act in a way that was “not normal” and any time my mask slipped I would be strictly punished for it. The way this would present for me later in life was that I would get angry at people who didn’t follow the same rules, because like… *I* had to smother all these things, why couldn’t they?
When I learned I was Autistic and ADHD and that these were symptoms and normal and that I shouldn’t have been in the situation I had been in where I’d had to hide myself a lot of my anger started to fade, and my incorrect beliefs about other people shifted.
If Sia was undiagnosed and unable to come to terms with her own symptoms, I think it’s a lot easier to fall victim to misconceptions due to projections and self loathing. While the article is correct that she’s a celebrity with more access than more people will likely ever have, if she didn’t have a diagnosis and didn’t know where to look, then she wasn’t actually getting the support herself? She did something wrong, but what’s the point of continuing to punish her for that? No one wins. I don’t really wanna create a world where people are ruined forever because they let their trauma and biases lead to mistakes they can never recover from, even once they start learning and healing and changing from it. That sounds terrifying.

i actually haven't been diagnosed, but i was misdiagnosed as borderline personality disorder while i was a functioning alcoholic. some states/counties dont have enough data or care enough to get the new dsm5 book, so they just keep misdiagnosing people in my community.

About Sia, I don't think the fact that she was ableist in the movie controversy is incompatible with her autism diagnose. It's not because you are autistic that you are properly educated and conscientious about autism and ableism, specially because we all grow up in an ableist society and learned things that way, and autism is such a complex condition.
I also don't think it's good to never give Sia a chance of growing and learning from what happened. Like, what some people are doing. Yes, it was awful, unexcusable, but now will we keep pointing fingers at her forever? I think the fact that she wanted to make his movie and how defensive she felt about the movie (what led to all of that unprofessional and offensive responses) might be related to the fact that she was probably thinking about her being autistic back then.
It makes sense that she is autistic, I don't know how to explain, but she is different. I know that the way artists present themselves publicly is not always the way they are on the inside, so the way Sia acts on stage could just be a performance, and not her real traits and personality, but now that we all know she is autistic, it makes a lot of sense.

It is still definitely possible for lower needs autistic people to be ableist against higher needs autistic people.
Her problem is that she went off half baked without educating herself about the actual autistic community, going off of problematic stuff that parents of higher needs autistics do to them (like restraints), Autism Speaks, etc.

thank you for using your platform to speak up about trans and autistic people. there are so many amazing trans and autistic voices now and i love that you mentioned ethel cain - she's one of my favourite artists right now. also i love how graham linehan says there is no great trans art but fails to realise that the matrix was literally written and directed by the wachowski sisters, who wrote the movies as a trans allegory.
I made it to the age of 35 before I was diagnosed as autistic and even then I only found out because I was having a really hard time dealing with COVID-19 restrictions and went to a psychologist about that and he was all "well actually, everything has been hard for you your entire life because you're autistic", which I wasn't really expecting. Learning that was really hard for me because I had been carrying around this fairly negative understanding of autism and autistic people, based mostly on ignorance. So I think its probably easy for autistic people to judge other autistic people harshly or even ignorantly, diagnosed or not, and this has led me to be a little more intentionally compassionate and understanding about other peoples hidden difficulties, just so long as they are willing to admit they have made mistakes when those mistakes are pointed out to them, and they try to be better.
My favourite trans music artist is Cavetown. My favourite songs are Devil Town, Lemon Boy, and Boys Will Be Bugs! He goes by He/They and his stuff is awesome. :]

Thanks for making me aware of potential negative interpretations of being "on the spectrum". I've used it interchangeably with being autistic for myself (since my self-diagnosis 4 years ago now); as I, personally, like the connotation that it brings for me that knowing one autistic, you know one autistic - because, being a spectrum, we all have a different profile (sensory needs, etc.). I see what you said/explained there, though, too. I'm gonna have to do more research and thinking on it. Thanks for raising that awareness, and I'd love to read whatever anyone chiming in might write! :)
In my personal experience, autistic people have MORE self-awareness and do more self reflection than any neurotypical person.

It’s reductive to paint Autistic people as more self-aware or self-reflective than allistic people. Musk, for instance, is incapable of self-reflection and lashes out at even the most benign criticism. It’s just like when people claim Autistic people are more empathetic than allistic people; once again, Musk proves that’s a gross generalization.
My guess is that autistic people simply have to.
We get rejected and criticised by everyone around us so eventually we need to ask ourselves "why do people always seem to have a problem with me in particular?".
And being diagnosed does kind of confirm that we experience the world differently than allistic people.
So while an allistic person might blame others for their troubles and assume they are in the right, autistic people know "This doesn't make sense to me but since my brain is literally very different from theirs this is probably how they feel about XYZ.".
Additionally, our experiences are often dismissed by others so we know how it feels to have a different "reality" other people don't understand (for example being in pain because of noise but others think that's not a thing)
so I think we are just aware of the fact that other people's reality can be different from our own but still be true.
Of course there are autistic people who aren't and allistic people who are very self-aware but I agree with your observations from my personal experiences and I also think it makes sense logically.

we can't afford to not be self-aware. we're constantly told from a young age that there is "something wrong with us," whether it's in those exact words or no. either way we tend to grow up with a distinct sense of knowing that we're different from most people. on top of that, the world itself is not set up for or to help autistic people. so we have to come up with ways of navigating the world while also not getting hurt. we can't afford to just Be the way neurotypical people often can. the world's made for them, and nobody's trying to correct every single behavior of theirs at every turn. and of course that only gets worse if you're marginalized in other ways as well, i.e., if youre lgbt, if you're a person of color, if you're a woman, etc.
i very frequently wonder what it's like, if im honest. imagine not policing yourself constantly? not watching yourself through an imagined neurotypical's eyes? absolutely unhinged, i cannot begin to imagine what that's like.

It’s a term that’s become offensive based on context. In my experience, people (allistic and Autistic) lean on it as a way of avoiding the word “Autistic” and have a very poor grasp of what a spectrum even is.
I think there are mixed feelings about it - I've definitely heard a lot of autistic people use it. It depends on the context and what else you're saying, I suppose. I don't think it's inherently bad 😊

Also, it was literally just 2007 when we in the woods greater art world were talking about the ridiculous but infamous statement by the (annoyingly great) painter Georg Baselitz (which was taken seriously) “there are no great women artistes” . Obviously, once the museums and collectors were pressured enough to pay attention to women, a mission that was going on well before 2007 and continues today, and women were given the time of day, that statement has become a sort of well trodden joke. There’s an extremely long list of great women artists who needed unearthing, and many (most I’d say) of the great contemporary painters are women. Or. Not cis men.
The statement that there are no great trans artists will also become a joke. And in the world of art is already being proven wrong. Sorry to that poor unsophisticated unexplorative old lump, his loss.

I watched Music (through *cough cough* alternate resources, didn't want to give money to it) and it was not a good movie. Even putting the autism rep aside (if you can), its just not very well written at all. To me, it seemed like Sia saw this movie as her child and so refused to accept any criticism from anyone, and in turn made a bad movie. It was a movie full of boring stereotypes, saviour complexes and characters that seemed like they were supposed to be relevant but weren't really?
Yeah, I could have written a better movie than that, and I'm just a uni graduate who half-studied screenwriting.

It goes to show that degrees can be a bit pointless when you can't get a job in your chosen field. Studying screenwriting or almost anything to do with filmmaking is pointless because the jobs always go to connected people. It's nepotism that gets people creative jobs not talent.

I was diagnosed with asperger's in the mid 00s. It's still used often in the US. Almost all medical advances from 1900s and earlier has ties to awful people.

I remember when Music came out I heard my mother (A speech language pathologist specializing in autism) LOUDLY ranting to my dad about how fucked up the movie was and how it was going to be so harmful to all neurodivergent people.
She has been a huge advocate for neurodivergent rights since day one and has been the best parent a child with ADHD could ask for. I legitimately think she would strangle Sia if she ever saw her in person

11:00 It's about self insight and the (perceived) lack of it among autistic people, my parents are transphobic and one of their "arguments" is that gender clinics are supposedly victimising vulnerable autistic people - it hasn't occurred to them in the slightest that you can't just magically talk autistic people into being trans (and even if you could, like, why would you?). It's particularly ironic because they're definitely neurodivergent themselves but have approximately no insight into their own mental health, through willful ignorance
