  • Mario Golf is a sports game developed by Camelot Software Planning and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. In the game, Mario, his friends, and his enemies play golf on a variety of Mario-themed courses. It is the second game in the Mario Golf series (though the first to carry that name). Its tagline is "Tee up with Mario and his friends!"

Possibly one of the most underrated games ever. My whole family loves this game. Even my father who doesn't like video games. It never gets boring. Plum, Harry, Bowser, and Maple were my favorites.

I loved the music in this game as a kid and I still do to this day. Harmonic, chill, and just gets you in a good mood. My dad kinda hated this game because he generally doesn't like the n64 controller and a shot's accuracy can be tough to determine in this game for a lot of people, but it's still enjoyable to me.

I dug this up recently after getting addicted to Toadstool Tour on the GameCube and wanting more golf (and I guess to answer the question in the video, Toadstool Tour is my favorite Mario sports title). I got an N64 second-hand years ago with Mario Golf and Mario Tennis, and until this year I had never touched either of them, as other games like Banjo-Kazooie attracted me more. However, finally visiting this game I had a lot of fun with it. It's way harder to learn than Toadstool Tour as it gives you less information about how your shot will play out, and you sometimes have to do a lot of math in your head to account for distance lost from landing in a hazard or rain/wind, which isn't always fun. However, it's very satisfying to master the game once you learn how it works, and while I don't think it's nearly as good as Toadstool Tour due to having less content, less interesting courses and more rudimentary physics, it's still Mario Golf, and Mario Golf is just one of the most inexplicably deep, addictive and relaxing formulas of gameplay I've had the pleasure of experiencing in my lifetime. These games also have some of the most underrated OSTs in Nintendo's library, striking a perfect balance between peppy and soothing. Fun fact: the composer of these two games also made the music for Dark Souls.

One of my favourite games on the N64. Took me several goes to unlock Wario he was a pain in the ass to beat because of his driving and putting was ridiculous but trying to beat Harry is even worse -_-
Favourite Mario Sports title would probably be Mario Kart Wii, great graphics, good challenge to unlock all characters and vehicles and no microtransactions! But equally Mario Kart 64 is amazing in its own right, along with Mario Strikers Charged Football, I played that game to death to unlock everything and playing online was really fun and competetive.

Maybe it’s because I grew up with Toadstool Tour more, but playing Mario Golf 64 was a struggle for me. It’s a good game but also really difficult. There was no indicator to where flag is located when Putting and that tricks me off the most.
Not only this, but Mario Golf GBC and Hot Shots Golf 1&2 had a similar problem. That’s why I tell everyone who are interested in these games to not play the older Mario Golf and Hot Shots Golf games until they get an understanding of the later games first.
I just think the later games in both series are much better in each installment, mechanically.

My favorite Mario sports title? The subject of this review, mate. 'Mario Golf' is one of those rare pieces of gaming magic that always brings a smile to my face whenever I turn it on.
Whatever few complaints you have with 'Mario Golf' are the same ones I have with this game. The mini golf mode, while quaint, really didn't serve as much more than putting practice. Still, 'Mario Golf' a great title; I love the atmosphere, the music (especially Speed Golf's frenzied tempo), and, as alluded to earlier, the childlike joy I get from the entire package

I remember my friend in Junior High saying he wanted to get Mario Golf and I still remember to this day when I told him, "if you EVER say some stupid shit like that around me again I'll never stop hitting you". Who knew it was a good game, feel a little bad now

As far as the comment topic of conversation, 'favorite Mario sports tittle on any system,' I sway between Mario Golf Advance Tour, for its more RPG-feel, and Mario Golf World Tour (3ds) because of its interesting online multiplayer system. I actually can't imagine many ways to improve on the 3ds one, but sometimes I'm just more in the mood for Advance Tour's 'Golden Sun' feel.

I always did find it ironic that this was the same company that made the famous Shining series games on Sega Genesis and Sega Saturn (Back when they were known as Sonic Software Planning), it goes to show that even when faced with something completely new and unknown/different, they stood up to the challenge and passed with flying colors. A round of applause for Camelot, I say. As for favorite Mario Sports games, my pick is very obscure to a lot, but I choose Mario's Tennis for Virtual Boy. Not perfect by far, but it was very fun in its own right and I find it a shame that it never got a larger spotlight since then.

My issue with this game, is how hard it is to land a good shot. It doesn't give you a proper grid to help you understand how you should take your shot. You just have to pray you got it right.

As far as I am aware even if you could hack in the other four characters. It takes your status of them in the Gameboy game, much like with Pokemon Stadium. So you don't gain or lose anything over all, but yeah. You really would need the gameboy game, or be a very skilled hacker, as I assume the character animations are in there, but you'd need to code in a name (maybe), and in all the stats. Which may not seem hard at face value, but if I know anything from Camelot, it has a deeper system then it looks.

I love Mario Golf on the N64 and the Gameboy Color. I loved how simple the games were and how devilishly difficult they could be. I also loved the RPG stuff in the Gameboy version and making my own character.
I could never get into the later versions though. I have the Gamecube version and I hated how they changed the way the game played. The auto mode they added was lame and if I wanted to use the old manual shot, I had to use the B button instead of just pressing A. Having to switch between the A button and B button ruins the rhythm in my opinion. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but it was to me since I pretty much had to re-learn how to play the game after becoming really good at it on the N64 and Gameboy.

I have golf on every system from Atari to Xbox. And Fred couples golf links, on genesis is the most casual and smooth. Pebble beach dude. Like all others the putting will make your hair gray. Just don't get a putter mixed up with a 4 iron. You go from eagle to 13 over par. And smash your controller.

I think Mario Kart 64 is probably one of my favourite Mario sports games. Racing is a sport, right? Geneerally speaking, I've never been a fan of sports games. They all seem to play the same way to me; or at least those which simulate the same sport. I also typically find sports games to be rather lacking in exciting events.
Mario Kart is the exception though, because it is nothing like a racer which tries to be realistic.

    • @n64glennplant

When I played this again on UltraHDMI it made me sell my Ultra HDMI, I couldn't get over the golfball being a perfect square. How did I get used to this as a child? The CRT must have made this stuff look way better. I appreciate my SNES/NES HDMI mods vs. N64. Upscaled 240p 3D doesn't work very well for me vs. 2D.

I’ve got no clue what you’re talking about. I have an ultra hdmi and play it on a 4K TV at 720, de-blur off, simple scanlines and it looks great. The graphics are always going to look slightly muggy on n64 games because that’s just how it is. It’s part of the charm and I love it
