Undertaking the first of eight quests across the British Isles, Professor Aubrey Manning seeks clues to uncover a lost Irish Eldorado. Spectacular hoards of gold objects show Bronze Age people in Ireland had access to large amounts of the precious metal. But where did these preshistoric metalworkers find it? Could dramatic changes in the landscape over time provide the key to the success of these ancient prospectors?

Ooh, I'm looking forward to this one, being from Ireland. Haven't seen it before. Fair play, keep up the good work! Thanks.

I’d say there was a lot more trading going on between far flung civilisations than we think

Most of the gold found in the Wicklow gold rush, in the 1700s, was big nugget type gold. Just picked out of the stream and it's surrounding areas. Some basic sluicing was used, but most of the people involved knew nothing about recovering gold. After a very short time, the British took control of the situation ( as it was a total free for all, with nothing going to the crown)and brought in an expert gold miner from South Africa ( weaver) to take charge. It was too late, the easy gold was all gone. He never found the source. The estimates of the amount of gold recovered vary wildly, but it's in multiples of kgs. So the our ancestors were well capable of getting large quantities in locations where it was literally lying around. There are many locations in Ireland where this could have occurred.

The truth is they haven't a clue how all that wonderful gold was taken from the earth in Ireland to make those beautiful jewelry pieces long ago. Their methods and secrets have been lost to time.

I don't think there has to be a single source of Irish gold. Gold seems easily found in Ireland... perhaps perseverance was the source of the motherlode. ADDED....had I watched 5 more minutes before I wrote the previous comment, I would have learned this was the same conclusion the channel creator came to.

GOLD WAS USED IN IRELAND OVER FOUR AND A HALF THOUSAND YEARS AGO, LONG BEFORE THE BRONZE AGE EVEN STARTED. YOU SHOWED CHECK YOUR BASIC FACTS BEFORE BEING SO DISMISSIVE, YOU ONLY EMBARRASS YOURSELF
