Dean Parks is an amazing musician, he is so tasteful, he really knows what is appropriate to play and does it masterfully. One thing to me stands out is the time he give to rests during solos making the notes he choses to play even more interesting

These deep dives, Andy, are such vital components of the canon. They will incubate, glowing hotter and hotter, gaining greater importance, as time goes by. Like Dean said (of notes in a chart), they are “a message in a bottle.” Thanks for doing this holy work!

That was a priceless hour that added so many great things to my cumulative knowledge. Lovely interview, Andy, with a true gentleman.
There’s a Dean Parks moment that revealed itself to me a few years back. He produced and played on Johnny Rivers’ hit, “Swayin’ To The Music.” The song was a ballad. As one would expect, Dean’s playing suited the mood perfectly. It’s a shining example of his gift for coming up with beautifully phrased, melodic lines. For years after hearing that recording, I thought he played a fair amount of bent notes. Upon a closer listen, I found that he was actually sliding into notes instead of bending up. The generic LA style of playing at the time was always chock full of bent notes. Dean took a different route, and, as one would expect, the results are perfect. When the song reaches the beginning of the fade-out, he throws in a few bends. Have a listen!
