This is amazing for me to watch for several reasons. 1) Dean played guitar AND SAX in my brother's high school stage band in Fort Worth in the mid 60s. They did a spaghetti dinner and concert each year and I remember watching Dean play solos on the sax (I was 6 and 7 and can still picture it). (My brother was the drummer.) 2) I actually WON the Aja album from a giveaway contest with KLBJ in Austin TX the day it came out. Of course, when the album arrived and I stuck it on the turntable, I didn't realize that when the music started, I was listening to my brother's old bandmate. I always knew from the credits that Parks was on it, but I didn't know until now that he played that opening riff. Wild...
Thanks so much for this wonderful interview!

Hearing Dean play Rikki Don't Lose on acoustic was so amazing. It is so beautiful in and of itself, and hearing it solo showcases Dean's incredible feel and technique I've heard that song a thousand times and never really appreciated how beautiful the acoustic guitar part really is. I think that it could be because post intro the focus is on Fagen's vocal lead and the acoustic guitar is accompanying as part of the ensemble.

Thank you for having Dean, great interview! Dan fans and music lovers around the globe are singing the highest praise for Mr. Parks work, he's not unsung for everybody.
p.s. on the Magneplanar: that was one of the few (if any other) phase coherent systems available around the time (broadband speakers as the only exception to be mentioned, but they couldn't and can't deliver the fidelity needed). Becker, Fagen and the team involved were cutting edge in every single aspect of making a record, be it the songs, the musicians, be it the recording. The detail about the monitor choice does reflect this perfectly. Why is it that those records sound so "tight" and became a pro-audio standard upto this day? Because they were not guessing, they knew what they had, using cutting edge gear to their favour, also an unsung story if you will.

Hearing these great musicians like Dean Parks talk about their work makes me think of all those master craftsmen who built the gothic cathedrals in Europe that have stood the test of time. We can see the fruits of their labor -- the flying buttresses, ornate bas relief sculptures and chimerical gargoyles but the voices of the artisans who designed and built them have been lost in time. It's somewhat fitting that as some have said: architecture is frozen music. I feel fortunate to be able to hear from musicians like Dean reminisce about music that has similarly stood the test of time and about which they're rightfully proud and for which they're receiving merited recognition and praise. Several songs he has played on have been a source of both joy and solace for me through the years. I now can associate a face and manner when I hear those sounds and they enrich the listening experience. Just want to say thank you to him for the music and thank you for shining a light withs this interview.

The musicians that played for The Dan all have an amazing mix of technical proficiency and musical sense. WB & DF knew what they were doing when looking for specific players for their records. Of course they knew what sounds they wanted and they have to hear many renditions of these compositions to attain the auditory intentions. Such geniuses those two. But a lot of complementary genius also came from these great sessions musicians. Dean Parks is a bonafide!

My wife and I play Josie and we split out the parts on the intro. I don’t think either of us could play the full thing without relearning it. Wow thanks Jason and Dean! Maybe sometime a Bread-focused Dean Parks interview can be done.

These series of videos are really historic because they delve into the history of some of the greatest songs ever recorded and as a music listener first and guitarist I grew up reading the album liner notes to see who did what and I remember names like Dean Parks,Carol Kaye,James Jameson,Bernard Purdue,Tommy Tedesco,Larry Carlton,Chuck Rainey to name a few,so it’s great to see and hear the session players talk about the sessions behind the hits💯

Great interview Mason. I first remember seeing Dean when he played a TV concert with David Gates and Bread back in the early 70s. On lead guitar was the famous Larry Knechtel. I always thought it was Dean who played the solo on Guitar Man but it was actually Larry.

I think they couldn't come up with a good guitar ending. Larry really nailed it with the wah wah. I saw the same TV concert. I did see Bread in Denver at their arena in the very late 70's they sounded perfect.

The best parts of the video are Mason's candid reactions when Dean demonstrates some of his original 'Dan lines. He be like: "I can't believe I'm watching Dean friggin' Parks play this right here in front of me!" Totally awesome.

Mythic….. Back then when musicians were genious… with a very high level and classic musical education… their childhood was in the 50’s and 60’s other era… other apprenticeship… Damn’d being a session guitarist for Steely Dan or Stevie Wonder would have been my deepest dream…. Pretty much in the shadow but making part of huge musical moments in the history…. Very cool interview
